Abstract:To improve the electrochemical activity and electrochemical energy storage performance of the catalyst, one of the best approaches is to adjust materials structure reasonably and design of micro-array to enhance specific surface area and expose more active sites. In this work, CoNi-LDH/MXene@NiMoO4 electrode with multistage structure was successfully designed, in which CoNi-LDH was vertically arranged on NiMoO4 nanorods coated with MXene. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance was improved through the adjustment of LDH by MXene. The electrode has an excellent OER activity, which the overpotential is 222 mV at 100 mA cm(-2). In addition, it can maintain high efficiency and stable operation for 120 h. The overall water-splitting (OWS) electrolytic cell was assembled with CoNi-LDH/MXene@NiMoO4 electrodes, which exhibited a low cell voltage (1.56 V) at 10 mA cm(-2). Moreover, the assembled OWS electrolytic cell can operate stably under the low voltage by small-scale solar power generation and thermal power generation. Furthermore, CoNi-LDH/MXene@NiMoO4 electrode also showed good potential in electrochemical energy storage. This work opened a new avenue for MXene to regulate the activity of transition metal-based catalysts. The efficient preparation of clean energy by the interaction of MXene and transition metal groups show great prospects.

Abstract:Metal sulfides exhibit good catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their distinctive electronic and structural properties; however, their inadequate electrical conductivity hinders electron transfer, while easy agglomeration obstructs active sites. Herein, a dual molten salt etching strategy and subsequent sulfidation are employed to anchor CoS/FeS 2 heterojunction nanosheets onto an electrically conductive MXene (MXene@CoS/FeS 2 ) for efficient OER. The strong electronic interaction between CoS and FeS 2 , in conjunction with the conductive MXene, facilitates rapid charge transfer, while the heterostructured nanosheets on the MXene substrate expose abundant catalytic active sites. Dut to its delicate nanostructure, the MXene@CoS/FeS 2 composite demonstrates an exceptionally low overpotential (278 mV achieved at 10 mA cm −2 ) and remarkable stability (over 40 h). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the electron transfer at the CoS/FeS 2 interface effectively reduces the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) for MXene@CoS/FeS 2 . Additionally, the simple and straightforward preparation process eliminates the need for HF, enabling efficient and large-scale catalyst production while ensuring safety and environmental friendliness. Overall, the designed MXene@CoS/FeS 2 holds great promise as an OER catalyst.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials are regarded as potential electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) resulting from the abundant pore structures, large surface area and atomically dispersed metal centers, while their coordinately saturated metal nodes are inert to electrocatalysis. In this work, creating active sites while accelerating charge transport is proposed to improve the OER properties of MOF-derived layered double hydroxides (MLDH). By using multifunctional Ti3C2 MXene as support and post-treating MOF with an etching-coprecipitating process, the resultant CoFe MLDH/Ti3C2 exhibits prominent OER performance with ultralow overpotentials of only 170 and 238 mV to achieve the current density of 10 and 100 mA/cm2, respectively. In addition, the experimental and theoretical calculation results prove the strong electronic interaction between CoFe MLDH and Ti3C2 MXene could modulate the binding strength of intermediates for OER. This work gives a direction to prepare MOF-based efficient catalysts and enhance the intrinsic activity of (oxy)hydroxide-based catalysts.

Abstract:ABMo(3)O(8) is an emerging oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst, exhibiting dual coordination sites for transition metals with good conductivity. However, it is unclear which sites are active for the OER and how to activate them both. Herein, we demonstrated experimentally that only tetrahedral (Td) Co sites are highly active in Co2Mo3O8, and octahedral (Oh) sites are activated by introducing Fe. Various synchrotron X-ray based spectroscopies confirmed the allocation of Co2+ at Td and Fe2+ at Oh sites. The dual activation of different sites improved the OER efficiency with overpotentials of 308 mV@10 mA cm(-2) and 361 mV@100 mA cm(-2). This unique structure with corner-shared T-d Co and O-h Fe in high spin states increases the active site numbers, produces synergistic effects, optimizes the adsorption of intermediates, and creates an unobstructed spin channel for electron transfer. This work provides an effective strategy to design a pair of OER catalysts by coordination engineering.

Abstract:Compared with traditional two-dimensional layered materials, MXene with metal-like conductivity has excellent chemical reaction activity and hydrophilicity, which can be used as ideal substrate materials. Nanocomposites with the non-noble metal based on MXene have important application prospects in the field of electrocatalytic decomposition of water. In this study, Co4MnFe3/Ti3C2 has been successfully synthesized only by the one-step method and prepared using ultrathin two-dimensional layered Ti3C2 as substrate materials, which is much more convenient than most electrocatalyst hybridization. The hybrid exhibits excellent electrochemical performance in alkaline media with an overpotential of 263 mV and Tafel slope of 26.3 mV.dec(-1), which is much lower than that of its pure Co4MnFe3 counterparts and RuO2 catalyst in alkaline medium. When the current density reaches 10 mA/cm(2), excellent long-range stability is displayed. Meanwhile, a fast reaction kinetics can also be obtained. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations reveal that, due to electron interactions and d-band center of metals, the enhanced density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi level has great influence on the oxygen evolution reaction property of the electrocatalyst via adjusting the adsorption strength of intermediates, which can improve the electrocatalytic performance of the hybrid. More importantly, this work provides a new approach for the electrolytic water oxygen evolution reaction of MXene-based catalysts in alkaline media and shed light on the exploration of advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion and storage systems.
In-situ surface reconstruction of Co-based imidazole zeolite framework by Mo etching for superior water oxidation

Abstract:Although zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) possess the merits of orderly porosity, high permeability, and easy functionalization, the transformation of ZIFs into the real active species and the promotion of the catalytic efficiency and stability are still challenging. Herein, CoMo-based three-dimensional (3D) hollow nanocages composed of interconnected nanosheets are fabricated by in-situ etching metal-organic framework (ZIF-67) under the aid of MoO42-. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in-situ Raman confirm that Mo leaching can accelerate surface reconstruction and generate CoOOH active sites after continuous oxidation. Benefiting from the nanostructure and electronic properties after surface reconstruction, the engineered CoMo-30 exhibits the lowest overpotential of 280 mV at 30 mA cm-2 and robust stability over 110 h in 1 M KOH media for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which significantly surpasses the other counterparts and commercial RuO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that CoMo-30 has a lower free energy of *O → *OOH as rate determining step (RDS), suggesting that CoOOH sites play a crucial role in enhancing the activity and kinetics of OER. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of hollow structures and the structure-composition-activity relationship during the electrochemical reaction process.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with special morphologies provide the geometric morphology and composition basis for the construction of platforms with excellent catalytic activity. In this work, cobalt–cerium composite oxide hollow dodecahedrons (Co/Cex-COHDs) with controllable morphology and tunable composition are successfully prepared via a high-temperature pyrolysis strategy using Co/Ce-MOFs as self-sacrificial templates. The construction of the hollow structure can expose a larger surface area to provide abundant active sites and pores to facilitate the diffusion of substances. The formation and optimization of phase interface between Co3O4 and CeO2 regulate the electronic structure of the catalytic site and form a fast channel favorable to electron transport, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution activity. Based on the above advantages, the optimized Co/Ce0.2-COHDs obtained an enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance.

Abstract:Inverse-spinel manganese cobalt oxide (MnCo2O4) is an active and stable electrocatalyst towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium, but the room still remains for improving its activity owing to the limited electronic conductivity and catalytically active sites. Herein, we propose effective and novel cerium (IV) oxide (CeO2)-induced surface chemical reconstruction strategy to optimize the OER electrocatalytic performance of inverse-spinel MnCo2O4. To reach this aim, a MnCo2O4/CeO2 heterostructure is designed and synthesized through a facile and effective zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived method, which not only successfully implements the surface chemical reconstruction of MnCo2O4 including: (i) the charge redistribution modulating the electronic structure and (ii) the interface reconstruction creating more oxygen vacancies, but also endows MnCo2O4/CeO2 with hierarchical hollow architecture that further extends catalytically active sites. Benefiting from the surface chemical reconstruction triggered structure and composition advantages, the as-synthesized MnCo2O4/CeO2 presents the reduced overpotentials (276 mV at 10 mA cm(-2); 390 mV at 50 mA cm(-2)), improved kinetics (87 mV dec(-1)), low activation energy (E-a = 48.8 kJ mol(-1)) and robust long-term stability, which exceeds benchmark RuO2 and single MnCo2O4 catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate obvious changes for the electronic structure of MnCo2O4 and the increased d-band center of active Co atom after the surface chemical reconstruction, thus optimizing the binding strength of reaction intermediates during the OER. It is believed that this work gives references to the understanding and design of highly active heterojunction electrocatalysts for water oxidation.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) Fe-Ni-Co-MOF is synthesized using a simple double ligand strategy at room temperature. The surface reconstruction process transforms it into a crystalline-amorphous heterojunction composed of polycrystalline metal (oxy)-hydroxide (MOOH) and amorphous metal oxides/hydroxides with terephthalic acid (TPA) by coordination covalent bonding. In situ Raman spectroscopy discloses the dynamic structure conversion. Density functional theory (DFT), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) reveal the induction of the ligand defects on surface reconstruction and the enhancing effect of TPA on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance through a covalent interaction. The amorphous-crystalline heterojunction of Fe-Ni-CoOOH-TPA has numerous structural defects and high electrical conductivity, resulting in an efficient and stable OER performance with overpotentials of 236 mV at 10 mA cm(-2). It has also been observed that the catalyst processes self-healing in an idle state, arising from the reversible conversion of MOOH to M-(OH)(2). This work reveals the structural and compositional transformation of the 2D Fe-Ni-Co-MOF during surface reconstruction, elucidating the relationship between electrocatalytic reconstruction and water-splitting performance of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts. It has been proven that appropriate covalent interactions enhance the OER of electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The activity of electrocatalysts strongly depends on the number of active sites, which can be increased by downsizing electrocatalysts. Single-atom catalysts have attracted special attention due to atomic-scale active sites. However, it is a huge challenge to obtain atomic-scale CoOx catalysts. The Co-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) own atomically dispersed Co ions, which motivates to design a possible pathway to partially on-site transform these Co ions to active atomic-scale CoOx species, while reserving the highly porous features of MOFs. In this work, for the first time, the targeted on-site formation of atomic-scale CoOx species is realized in ZIF-67 by O-2 plasma. The abundant pores in ZIF-67 provide channels for O-2 plasma to activate the Co ions in MOFs to on-site produce atomic-scale CoOx species, which act as the active sites to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction with an even better activity than RuO2.

Abstract:It has been extensively researched that oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions involves dynamic surface restructuring. In particular, the development and design of sulfide/oxide pre-catalyst can reasonably adjust the composition and structure after surface reconstruction, which is very important for oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, a simple two-step hydrothermal method was used to achieve in situ S leaching and doping by precipitation-dissolution equilibrium, inducing the composition change and structure reconstruction of CoFe oxides. In addition, the cross-linked nanosheet structure generated in situ widely exposes the active area, and the crystal/amorphous interface accelerates the charge and mass transfer efficiency. The structurally transformed FeOOH and CoOOH showed excellent OER activity, with overpotentials of 299 and 322.2 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 , significantly superior to one-step or uncured catalysts. Low-cost iron based materials combined with simple methods can be easily mass-produced. This provides an opportunity for the effective design of heterogeneous surface reconfigurable electrocatalysts for practical water electrolysis.

Low-crystalline mixed Fe-Co-MOFs for efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an state-of-the-art electrocatalyst, have been shown an efficient alternative to precious metals. Herein, we have synthesized a series of mixed Fe-Co-MOFs (MFC-MOFs) with low crystallinity by a simple one-step solvothermal method, which can be applied as direct electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction. The broadening and weakened XRD diffraction peaks and the diffused ring in SAED reveal the low-crystalline characteristic of MFC-MOFs. The shifted Co 2p3/2 and Fe 2p3/2 peaks in XPS confirm the redistribution of local electrons in MFC-MOFs. The formation of more favorable Co in higher valence state is confirmed in XPS, which is more beneficial to be transformed into active OOH-like intermediates for OER. The optimal MFC-MOFs exhibits a lower overpotential at 10 mA cm−2, which decreases in 212 and 140 mV compared to that of Fe-MOFs and Co-MOFs, respectively. Meanwhile, a remarkably low Tafel slope (37 mV dec−1) and a favorable long-term stability (over 20 h) are obtained on the MFC-MOFs, which are all much superior to those of the as-synthesized RuO2. The enhanced catalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the inter-molecular synergy between Co-MOFs and Fe-MOFs, which affords MFC-MOFs low-crystalline structure and enlarged surface area. The optimized structure in return promotes the exposure of more active sites and remarkably improves the charge transfer capability. Overall, the design strategy based on the inter-molecular synergistic interactions and low-crystalline structure are worthy to be extended to increase the stability, catalytic active sites and electron transfer ability of mixed-node MOF electrocatalysts.

Abstract:In this work, the hollow spherical Co2 composite with micro-nanostructure has been successfully obtained through phosphating the cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF), which was prepared by solvothermal method. The MOF-derived Co2 hollow spheres are characterized by power X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements show that Co2 has a good performance with an overpotential of 328 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of only 57 mV dec−1. In addition, it is found that the composite has a minimum charge transfer resistance and a high long-term stability in alkaline solution.

Abstract:The construction of MnCo─CH (carbonate hydroxide)@Co3N core–shell heterostructures facilitates the surface reconstruction of Co3N, resulting in a more facile and rapid reconstruction process is demonstrated. During the reconstruction process, the inner Mn species in MnCo─CH migrate to the surface, thereby generating highly active Mn‐doped CoOOH. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts generally experience structural and electronic modifications during electrocatalysis. This phenomenon, referred to as surface reconstruction, results in the formation of catalytically active species that act as real OER sites. Controlling surface reconstruction therefore is vital for enhancing the OER performance of electrocatalysts. In this study, a new approach is introduced of heterostructure engineering to facilitate the surface reconstruction of target catalysts. Using MnCo carbonate hydroxide (MnCo─CH)@Co3N as a demonstration, it is discovered that the surface reconstruction occurs more readily and rapidly on MnCo─CH@Co3N than on Co3N. More interestingly, during the reconstruction process, Mn species migrate to the surface, enabling the in situ formation of highly active Mn‐doped CoOOH. Consequently, the MnCo─CH@Co3N catalyst after reconstruction exhibits a low overpotential of 257 mV at 10 mA cm−2, compared to 379 mV of individual Co3N. This work offers fresh perspectives on understanding the enhanced OER performance of heterostructure electrocatalysts and the role of heterostructure in promoting surface reconstruction.

Abstract:Structural reconstruction of electrocatalysts plays a pivotal role in catalytic performances for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), whereas the behavior is by far superficially understood. Here, we report that CO2 accessibility results in a universal self-adaptive structural reconstruction from Cu2O to Cu@CuxO composites, ending with feeding gas-dependent microstructures and catalytic performances. The CO2-rich atmosphere favors reconstruction for CO2RR, whereas the CO2-deficient one prefers that for hydrogen evolution reaction. With the assistance of spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations, we uncover a CO2-induced passivation behavior by identifying a reduction-resistant but catalytic active Cu(I)-rich amorphous layer stabilized by *CO intermediates. Additionally, we find extra CO production is indispensable for the robust production of C2H4. An inverse correlation between durability and FECO/FEC2H4 is disclosed, suggesting that the self-stabilization process involving the absorption of *CO intermediates on Cu(I) sites is essential for durable electrolysis. Guided by this insight, we design hollow Cu2O nanospheres for durable and selective CO2RR electrolysis in producing C2H4. Our work recognizes the previously overlooked passivation reconstruction and self-stabilizing behavior and highlights the critical role of the local atmosphere in modulating reconstruction and catalytic processes.

Abstract:A cation exchange strategy is proposed to convert layered Ti3C2-Na-TiO2 MXene nanofibers into Ti3C2-Co-TiO2 MXene nanoparticle arrays with open-layered 3D structure and numerous heterogeneous interfaces, which deliver excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity.

Abstract:An in situ coupling approach is developed to create a new highly efficient and durable cobalt-based electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Using a novel cyclotetramerization, a task-specific bimetallic phthalocyanine-based nanoporous organic framework is successfully built as a precursor for the carbonization synthesis of a nonprecious OER electrocatalyst. The resultant material exhibits an excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 280 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and high durability in an alkaline medium. This impressive result ranks among the best from known Co-based OER catalysts under the same conditions. The simultaneous installation of multiple diverse cobalt-based active sites, including FeCo alloys and Co4N nanoparticles, plays a critical role in achieving this promising OER performance. This innovative approach not only enables high-performance OER activity to be achieved but simultaneously provides a means to control the surface features, thereby tuning the catalytic property of the material.
Construction of Co/Fe co-embedded in benzene tricarboxylic acid with modulated coordination environment for accelerated oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:The preparation of stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction is of the utmost importance to realize high performance water decomposition reaction. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanostructures have become promising materials. Herein, we report three kinds of electrocatalysts with different structures and properties for the oxygen evolution reaction, which were constructed by using different binding sites of three kinds of ligands following a mechanism which involved only *O and *OH species as intermediates. CoFeBTC-MOF shows excellent overpotential η = 261 mV at 10 mA cm−2 (1.481 V vs. RHE), Tafel slope of 59.29 mV dec−1 and pretty excellent stability (48 h of continuous testing), making it become one of the best acid-resistant catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction. The DFT calculations show that there are different ways to transfer electrons. In addition, the coupling effect between Co and Fe metals is the key to regulate the electrocatalytic activity, confirming the cooperative catalysis mechanism with a reduced energy barrier.

Amorphous CoFeB Nanosheets with Plasmon-Regulated Dynamic Active Sites for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Abstract:Exploring efficient and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of crucial importance. Here, we report a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) engineering strategy to regulate surface reconstruction of CoFeB nanosheets by decorating plasmonic MoO2 nanospheres (MoO2/CoFeB), in which the SPR effect of MoO2 offers an additional acceleration for the conversion of inactive Co species to active cobalt oxyhydroxide on the CoFeB surface under visible light. Our results also indicate the real reactive surface for CoFeB is in the form of CoFeOOH with adsorbed BO2- that has positive effect. The MoO2/CoFeB shows superior OER performance with a low overpotential (209 mV at J=10 mA cm(-2)). However, such an accelerated reconstruction behavior would be self-terminated once the anodic voltage increases to thoroughly oxidize the MoO2 to high valence state (+6). This work inspires us to develop a rational strategy to improve the catalytic performance by properly regulating the surface reconstruction.

Abstract:Exploring high-efficient and stable electrocatalyst is essential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to deal with its slow kinetic process. Herein, a novel nanocomposite electrocatalyst coupling the amorphous high-entropy borate FeCoNiMnBO x with the high conductivity Ti 3 C 2 -MXene has been synthesized by a low-temperature liquid-phase reduction strategy. The FeCoNiMnBO x /MXene shows a low overpotential of 268 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a Tafel slope of 39.8 mV dec −1 under alkaline conditions, better than that of pure FeCoNiMnBO x and noble metal RuO 2 catalysts. The lamellar MXene in the composite can effectively suppress the aggregation of FeCoNiMnBO x and enhance the utilization of the active sites. The amorphous structure of FeCoNiMnBO x can expose more active sites. The strong interfacial bonding between MXene and FeCoNiMnBO x leads to redistribution of the interfacial charge and accelerates the charge transfer, which improve the electrical conductivity of the nanohybrids and promote the oxidation process of metal ions in FeCoNiMnBO x . The interface synergistically coupling effect to accelerate the kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction is demonstrated by in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). This work provides a new branch for the design of high-efficient electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications.
