Abstract:Here I am proposing a translation and discussion of the De Colore, one of the short scientific treatises written by Robert Grosseteste. In this very short treatise of the mid-1220s, Grosseteste continued the discussion on light and colours he started in the De Iride. He describes two manners of counting colours: one gives an infinity of tones, the other counts seven colours. In both cases, colours are created by the purity or impurity of the transparent medium when light is passing through it. This medieval framework survived until Newton's experiments with prisms.

Abstract:The concept of "Superprism" which is used in photonic crystal will be introduced into optical thin film coatings, due to the fact that the group velocity of the light is different as the wavelength in certain special case for the multiplayer thin film coatings. In this paper, The "superprism" effect of multilayer thin film coatings will be presented both from theoretical analysis and experimental results, these researches will create an new application of the thin film coatings not only to be a spectral filter but also can acts as "thin film gratings".

Abstract:A Cultural History of Color in the Age of Enlightenment covers the period 1650 to 1800. From the Baroque to the Neoclassical, color transformed art, architecture, ceramics, jewelry, and glass. Newton, using a prism, demonstrated the seven separate hues, which encouraged the development of color wheels and tables, and the increased standardization of color names. Technological advances in color printing resulted in superb maps and anatomical and botanical images. Identity and wealth were signaled with color, in uniforms, flags, and fashion. And the growth of empires, trade, and slavery encouraged new ideas about color. Color shapes an individual’s experience of the world and also how society gives particular spaces, objects, and moments meaning. The 6-volume set of the Cultural History of Color examines how color has been created, traded, used, and interpreted over the last 5,000 years. The themes covered in each volume are color philosophy and science; color technology and trade; power and identity; religion and ritual; body and clothing; language and psychology; literature and the performing arts; art; architecture and interiors; and artifacts.

In the first part of his Latin text we find reflection and refraction of light, described in a geometrical optics. In the second part, Grosseteste is discussing the rainbow and how the colors are created.

As part of this work, we introduce the notion of "calibration" to permutation patterns.

Abstract:Ancient glass objects typically show distinctive effects of deterioration as a result of environmentally induced physicochemical transformations of their surface over time. Iridescence is one of the distinctive signatures of aging that is most commonly found on excavated glass. In this work, we present an ancient glass fragment that exhibits structural color through surface weathering resulting in iridescent patinas caused by silica reprecipitation in nanoscale lamellae. This archaeological artifact reveals an unusual hierarchically assembled photonic crystal with extremely ordered nanoscale domains, high spectral selectivity, and reflectivity (~90%), that collectively behaves like a gold mirror. Optical characterization paired with nanoscale elemental analysis further underscores the high quality of this structure providing a window into this sophisticated natural photonic crystal assembled by time.

Abstract:Let $Y/S$ be a $p$-completely smooth morphism of $p$-torsion free $p$-adic formal schemes endowed with a Frobenius lift, and let $\overline Y/\overline S$ denote its reduction modulo $p$. We show that the category of crystals on the prismatic site of $\overline Y/S$ is equivalent to the category of $O_Y$-modules with integrable and quasi-nilpotent $p$-connection, and that the cohomology of such a crystal is computed by the associated $p$-de Rham complex. More generally, if $X$ is a closed subscheme of $\overline Y$, smooth over $\overline S$, then the prismatic envelope $\Delta_X(Y)$ of $X$ in $Y$ admits such a $p$-connection, the category of prismatic crystals on $X/S$ is equivalent to the category of $O_ {\Delta_X(Y)}$-modules with compatible integrable and quasi-nilpotent $p$-connection, and the cohomology of such a crystal is again computed by its $p$-de Rham complex. We also give a geometric construction of the ``prismatic Sen operator.'' Namely, we show that a lifting of $X$ (mod $p^2$) in $Y$ defines a vector field on the reduction modulo $p$ of $\Delta_X(Y)$ and on a ``diffracted'' Higgs complex which calculates the mod $p$ prismatic and de Rham cohomologies of $X$. Surprisingly, this complex is not the reduction modulo $p$ of the afore-mentioned $p$-de Rham complexbut is rather its ``$\alpha$-transform.'' As a consequence, we get a fairly explicit description of the action of the group scheme $G^\gamma$ on $R\Gamma(X, \Omega^\bullet_{X/S})$, Drinfeld's strengthening of the Deligne-Illusie decomposition theorem. We also explain how earlier work by several authors relating Higgs fields, $p$-connections, and connections can be placed in the prismatic context.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of the inverse prism as the dual of the conventional prism and deduce from this duality an implementation of it based on temporal discontinuity and spatial dispersion provided by anisotropy. Moreover, we show that this inverse prism exhibits the following three unique properties: chromatic refraction birefringence, ordinary monochromatic and extraordinary polychromatic temporal refraction, and linear-to-Lissajous polarization transformation.

Light is declared to be not Similar or Homogeneal, but consisting of difform rays, some of which are more refrangible than others. Abstract:It has been recently shown that lustre decoration of medieval and renaissance pottery consists of silver and copper nanocrystals, dispersed within the glassy matrix of the ceramic glaze. Lustre surfaces show peculiar optical effects such as metallic reflection and iridescence. In many cases, lustre appears overlapped to colored drawings. Here we report the findings of a study on glazes, pigments and lustre of several shards belonging to Deruta and Gubbio pottery of XVI century. The components of glazes and pigments have been identified. Lustre is confirmed to be characterised by silver and copper metal nanocrystals inhomogeneously dispersed in the glassy matrix of the glaze. In the case of lustre overlapped to colored decorations, we found two contradictory cases. The first consists of a lustre surface successfully applied over a blue smalt geometrical drawing. The second consists of a lustre surface, unsuccessfully applied over a yellow lead-antimonate pigment. The yellow pigment hinders the formation of lustre and removes crystals of tin dioxide, normally present in the glaze as opacifier.

Abstract:Painted in Rome around 1615, Jusepe de Ribera's series of half figures personifying the five senses invites a diplomatic audience associated with the Lincean Academy to a performance of prudence, a virtue meant to characterize the judgment of both art and of sensory experience. Ribera's series is new evidence for how the demonstration of prudence in conversation motivated ownership and display of art and shaped art's contribution to natural philosophy. Ribera's “Five Senses” articulates the distinction between sense and prudence, and reveals the importance of discussion, dissimulation, and social performance to the way early Seicento art was produced and consumed.

Abstract:Significance The striking colors of organisms, like butterflies, have sparked tremendous research interest in developing artificial photonic crystals with extraordinary optical properties. In most cases, the color of photonic crystals originates from the periodic microstructure that manipulates light through optical interference. Here, we report a photonic structure that does not rely on long-range periodic arrangements. Instead, such structural color comes from the nematic liquid crystals of nanodiscs as opposed to the conventional achiral nematic phases that are colorless under white light. This finding challenges the stereotypical design of photonic liquid crystals based mainly on periodically layered or helical structures. We expect that the concept of nematic photonic nanoparticles may open research opportunities for developing advanced photonic materials.
