Abstract:There are five types of platonic polyhedron and thirteen types of archimedean polyhedron. Any vertices of anyone of them are in a ball surface, and they have the same side length. The geometry characters of them are summurized. Using the CAD technique, some new forms of polyhedron space structures are designed. Design methods for space structures of polyhedron forms are put forward.

Abstract:In this paper I propose a possible use of Roman Dodecahedra, which are bronze artifacts of gallo-roman origin dating from the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD, for playing a bowling game. The presence of holes and knobs can be quite important during collisions. Moreover, in several of these objects, the holes have different sizes providing a biased rigid body.

Abstract:Recently I have proposed the Roman Dodecahedra as ancient coincidence rangefinders. Here I discuss several data and references freely available on the Web. After analysis, the common features of these artifacts allow to tell that a Roman Dodecahedron was probably a dioptron. The equation of this optical instrument is given. The paper ends with a discussion on the role of the Web and free information for further studies of these objects.

Abstract:Here I am discussing a possible use of a Roman Dodecahedron, a bronze artifact of gallo-roman origin, for measuring distance. A dodecahedron, found at Jublains, the ancient Nouiodunum, dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD, is used to create a model. Looking through the model, it is possible to test it for measurements of distance based on similar triangles.

Abstract:Two books, the "De Architectura" by Vitruvius and the "Naturalis Historia" by Pliny the Elder, give us a portrait of the Materials Science, that is, the knowledge of materials, in Rome at the beginning of the Empire. Here, I am reporting some very attractive contents that we can find in these books. The reader will see the discussion proposed in fours case studies: concretes, coatings, amorphous materials and colloidal crystals, to describe them in modern words.

Abstract:The purpose of this short paper is to describe a project to manufacture a regular octohedron on a 3D printer. We assume that the reader is familiar with the basics of 3D printing. In the project, we use fundamental ideas to calculate the vertices and faces of an octohedron. Then, we utilize the OPENSCAD program to create a virtual 3D model and an STereoLithography (.stl) file that can be used by a 3D printer.

Abstract:The packing and assembly of Platonic solids have fascinated mathematicians for ages. Recently, this fundamental geometrical problem has also attracted the attention of physicists, chemists, and engineers. This growing interest is due to the rapid advancements in various related fields, ranging from the formation of colloidal crystals and the design of metal–organic frameworks to the development of ultra-lightweight metamaterials, which are closely tied to the fast-evolving 3D printing technology. Numerous reports have focused on the assembly of Platonic polyhedra, particularly tetrahedra, for which an optimal packing strategy remains unidentified to this day. However, less attention has been given to the dodecahedron and its networks. This work introduces a new type of framework, designed from regular dodecahedra combined with icosahedron-based binders. The relatively simple design protocol employed here results in a remarkable variety of intriguing networks, which could be potentially useful in fields such as architecture, regenerative medicine, or aeronautics. Additionally, the dodecahedral networks presented in this study led to the discovery of intriguing structures resembling distorted graphene sheets. These structures exhibit features characteristic of both graphene and diamond.

Aristotle's ErrorIn the history of mathematics, one of the earliest recorded mistakes was made by Aristotle.More than 2,300 years ago, Aristotle (384-322 BCE) taught that the regular tetrahedra fill space.In De Caelo (On the Heavens) Book III.8 he says (in translation): "Among surfaces it is agreed that there are three figures which fill the place that contain them-the triangle, the square and the hexagon: among solids only two, the pyramid and the cube" [3, 306b, p. 319].Here "pyramid" refers to the regular tetrahedron, a Platonic solid.Thus Aristotle's assertion can be taken to mean: space can be tiled by congruent regular tetrahedra.

Abstract:This paper considers Platonic solids/polytopes in the real Euclidean space R^n of dimension 3 <= n < infinity. The Platonic solids/polytopes are described together with their faces of dimensions 0 <= d <= n-1. Dual pairs of Platonic polytopes are considered in parallel. The underlying finite Coxeter groups are those of simple Lie algebras of types An, Bn, Cn, F4 and of non-crystallographic Coxeter groups H3, H4. Our method consists in recursively decorating the appropriate Coxeter-Dynkin diagram. Each recursion step provides the essential information about faces of a specific dimension. If, at each recursion step, all of the faces are in the same Coxeter group orbit, i.e. are identical, the solid is called Platonic.

Abstract:Recently, it was published that some ancient bronze disks could had been calendars, that is, that their decorations had this function. Here I am discussing an example, the disk of the Trundholm Sun Chariot, proposing a new interpretation of it, giving a calendar of 360 days. Some geometric diagrams concerning the decoration layout are also proposed.

Abstract:Can we compute what we cannot draw? How must we draw to produce measurable representations, or visual ones? This research inquires into the relationship between mathematics and figurative representation, and more precisely between drawing and computation. The scientific imagery studied here is the representation of the five platonic solids, discussing various representation techniques from classical antiquity to modern times, and their efficacy to help calculate sizes and proportional ratios. Scholars in history of architectural drawing have too often limited their observations to the very few preserved plans and front views dating back to classical antiquity, without enlarging their investigation to other scientific fields that also rely on drawing as a research tool and communication device. Among these other fields stands the mathematical research, especially solid geometry which deals with objects and entities that have shapes that needs to be somehow drawn in 3D to be studied.

Abstract:New mathematical hypotheses are postulated concerning the truncated rhombohedron in Dürer's engraving Melencolia.I as well as the relation of the rhombohedron to the magic square. The two free parameters of a truncated rhombohedron have to be chosen in a way that (i) its front orthogonal elevation is nearly quadratical and with the form of the magic square, and that (ii) it possesses approximately a circumscribed sphere. Both conditions result in a value of 79.2 degrees for the angle of the rhombohedron. Measuring two lengths of the rhombohedron of the engraving yields the same value. In the magic square, the numbers are positioned in a way that the connection lines between four numbers give the sum 34 for lines which are the projection lines of the edges of the rhombohedron. In the Nürnberg-Codex of Dürer's manuscripts, exists a page with some sketches of mostly archimedean solids. One sketch represents a pentagon with approximately the measures of the six lateral faces of the truncated rhombohedron. It has to be looked upon as a preliminary sketch for the solid of the engraving. In 1543 Augustin Hirschvogel from Nürnberg, as the next after Dürer, rediscovered a further archimedean solid; this rediscovering has been attributed to D. Barbaro until now.
The Icosidodecahedron

Abstract:The icosidodecahedron has 30 vertices, one at the center of each edge of a regular icosahedron -- or equivalently, one at the center of each edge of a regular dodecahedron. It is a beautiful, highly symmetrical shape. But it is just a projection down to 3d space of a more symmetrical 6-dimensional polytope with 60 vertices. It is also a slice of a more symmetrical 4d polytope with 120 vertices, which in turn is the projection down to 4d space of an even more symmetrical 8-dimensional polytope with 240 vertices: the E8 root polytope. Here we explain all these constructions, and their connection to the quaternions and icosians.

Abstract:Fractal structures with self-similarity are of fundamental importance in the fields of aesthetic, chemistry and mathematics. Here, by taking advantage of constructs the rational geometry-directed precursor design, we report the construction of two fascinating Platonic solids, the Sierpiński tetrahedron ST-T and the Sierpiński octahedron ST-O, in which each possesses a fractal Sierpiński triangle on their independent faces. These two discrete complexes are formed in near-quantitative yield from the multi-component self-assembly of truncated Sierpiński triangular kernel L1 with tribenzotriquinacene-based hexatopic and anthracene-based tetratopic terpyridine ligands (L3 and L4 ) in the presence of metal ions, respectively. The enhanced stabilities of the 3D discrete structures were investigated by gradient tandem mass spectrometry (gMS2 ). This work provides new constructs for the imitation of complex virus assemblies and for the molecular encapsulation of giant guest molecules.

Abstract:We construct new embedded self-shrinkers of genus 3, 5, 7, 11 and 19 using variational methods. Our self-shrinkers resemble doublings of the Platonic solids and were discovered numerically by D. Chopp in 1994.

Abstract:In 1738, the King of Naples and future King of Spain, Carlos III, commissioned the Spanish military engineer Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre to begin the excavations of the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii and its surroundings, buried by the terrible explosion of Vesuvius in AD 79. Since that time, archaeologists have brought to light wonderful treasures found in the among ruins. Among them, the Sator Square is one of the most peculiar, apparently simple but mysterious. Supernatural and medicinal powers have been attributed to this object and its use was widespread during the Middle Age. Studies to explain its origin and meaning have been varied. There are theories that relate it to religion, the occult, medicine and music. However, no explanation has been convincing beyond pseudo-scientific sensationalism. In this study, the author intends to eliminate the mystical character of the Sator Square and suggests considering it as a simple palindrome or a game of words with certain symmetrical properties. However, these properties are not exclusive to the Sator Suare but are present in various mathematical and geometric objects.

Abstract:A series of ceramic artworks are presented, inspired by the author's research connecting theoretical physics to the beautiful theory of Riemann surfaces. More specifically the research is related to the classification of curves on the surfaces based on a description of them as built from basic building blocks known as "pairs of pants". The relevant background on this mathematics of these two dimensional spaces is outlined, some of the artistic process is explained: Both the conceptual ideas and their implementation. Many photos of the ceramics are included to illustrate this and the connected physics problem is briefly mentioned.

Abstract:Abstract. This paper deals with a virtual anastylosis of a Greek Archaic statue from ancient Sicily and the development of a public outreach protocol for those with visual impairment or cognitive disabilities through the application of three-dimensional (3-D) printing and haptic technology. The case study consists of the marble head from Leontinoi in southeastern Sicily, acquired in the 18th century and later kept in the collection of the Museum of Castello Ursino in Catania, and a marble torso, retrieved in 1904 and since then displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Siracusa. Due to similar stylistic features, the two pieces can be dated to the end of the sixth century BC. Their association has been an open problem, largely debated by scholars, who have based their hypotheses on comparisons between pictures, but the reassembly of the two artifacts was never attempted. As a result the importance of such an artifact, which could be the only intact Archaic statue of a kouros ever found in Greek Sicily, has not fully been grasped by the public. Consequently, the curatorial dissemination of the knowledge related with such artifacts is purely based on photographic material. As a response to this scenario, the two objects have been 3-D scanned and virtually reassembled. The result has been shared digitally with the public via a web platform and, in order to include increased accessibility for the public with physical or cognitive disabilities, copies of the reassembled statue have been 3-D printed and an interactive test with the 3-D model has been carried out with a haptic device.
