Interplanetary Causes and Impacts of the 2024 May Superstorm on the Geosphere: An Overview

Abstract:The recent superstorm of 2024 May 10-11 is the second largest geomagnetic storm in the space age and the only one that has simultaneous interplanetary data (there were no interplanetary data for the 1989 March storm). The May superstorm was characterized by a sudden impulse (SI+) amplitude of +88 nT, followed by a three-step storm main phase development which had a total duration of ~9 hr. The cause of the first storm main phase with a peak SYM-H intensity of -183 nT was a fast forward interplanetary shock (magnetosonic Mach number Mms ~7.2) and an interplanetary sheath with southward interplanetary magnetic field component Bs of ~40 nT. The cause of the second storm main phase with a SYM-H intensity of -354 nT was a deepening of the sheath Bs to ~43 nT. A magnetosonic wave (Mms ~0.6) compressed the sheath to a high magnetic field strength of ~71 nT. Intensified Bs of ~48 nT was the cause of the third and most intense storm main phase with a SYM-H intensity of -518 nT. Three magnetic cloud events with Bs fields of ~25-40 nT occurred in the storm recovery phase, lengthening the recovery to ~2.8 days. At geosynchronous orbit, ~76 keV to ~1.5 MeV electrons exhibited ~1-3 orders of magnitude flux decreases following the shock/sheath impingement onto the magnetosphere. The cosmic ray decreases at Dome C, Antarctica (effective vertical cutoff rigidity <0.01 GV) and Oulu, Finland (rigidity ~0.8 GV) were ~17% and ~11%, respectively relative to quite time values. Strong ionospheric current flows resulted in extreme geomagnetically induced currents of ~30-40 A in the sub-auroral region. The storm period is characterized by strong polar region field-aligned currents, with ~10 times intensification during the main phase, and equatorward expansion down to ~50 deg geomagnetic (altitude-adjusted) latitude.

Abstract:Starting from 29 January 2022, a series of solar eruptions triggered a moderate geomagnetic storm on 3 February 2022, followed subsequently by another. Despite the typically minimal impact of unintense storms on space technology, 38 out of the 49 Starlink satellites underwent orbital decay, re‐entering Earth's atmosphere. These satellite losses were attributed to enhanced atmospheric drag conditions. This study employs numerical simulations, utilizing our test particle simulation code, to investigate the dynamics of the inner radiation belt during the two magnetic storms. Our analysis reveals an increase in proton density and fluxes during the transition from the recovery phase of the first storm to the initial phase of the second, primarily driven by intense solar wind dynamic pressure. Additionally, we assess Single Event Upset (SEU) rates, which exhibit a 50% increase in comparison to initial quiet conditions.

Statistical Study of the Storm Time Radiation Belt Evolution During Van Allen Probes Era: CME‐ Versus CIR‐driven Storms

Abstract:Coronal mass ejection (CME)‐driven or corotating interaction region (CIR)‐driven storms can change the electron distributions in the radiation belt dramatically, which can in turn affect the spacecraft in this region or induce geomagnetic effects. The Van Allen Probes twin spacecraft, launched on 30 August 2012, orbit near the equatorial plane and across a wide range of L∗ with apogee at 5.8 RE and perigee at 620 km. Electron data from Van Allen Probes MagEIS and REPT instruments have been binned every 6 h at L∗=3 (defined as 2.5 < L∗<3.5), 4 (3.5 < L∗<4.5), 5 (4.5 < L∗<5.5). The superposed epoch analysis shows that (1) CME storms induce more electron flux enhancement at L∗=3 for energy channels below 1 MeV than CIR storms; (2) CME storms induce more electron flux enhancement at L∗=4 and 5 in the energy channels above 1 MeV than CIR storms; (3) CIR storms induce more electron flux enhancement at L∗=4 and 5 in the energy channels below 1 MeV than CME storms; (4) intense CME induce more than 50 times flux enhancement for the energy channel around 400 keV at L∗=3; (5) intense CIR induce more than 50 times flux enhancement for the energy channel around 200 keV at L∗=4. These results are consistent with a general picture of enhanced convection over a longer period for CIR storms which increased flux closer to geosynchronous orbit consistent with earlier studies, while CME storms likely produce deeper penetration of enhanced flux and local heating which is greater at higher energies at lower L∗.

Abstract:Plasma in the inner magnetosphere is affected by various processes, such as substorms. In this study, we have statistically investigated the ring current properties based on the observations of Van Allen Probes from 2012 to 2019 to examine the substorm effects on the plasma pressure and current system in the inner magnetosphere. The results show that the plasma pressure increases significantly, leading to a similar to 3 nT/hr geomagnetic depression during intense substorms. The contribution of <100 keV H+ ions to the plasma pressure increases during substorms, which is more significant at lower L-shells. Opposite to the H+ ions, the proportion of >10 keV O+ ions contributing to the plasma pressure increases as substorm intensity increases. In addition, the rise of plasma pressure is mainly distributed from dusk to midnight, resulting in the enhancement of asymmetric ring current and the region II field-aligned currents connecting to the ionosphere. Our results provide a comprehensive view of the variation of plasma pressure and current system in the inner magnetosphere during quiet periods and intense substorms.

Variability of energetic proton flux and pitch angle distributions in the Earth's radiation belt modulated by geomagnetic storms

Abstract:Energetic protons trapped in the radiation belt, as a vital component of the ring current system, are observationally and theoretically modulated by geomagnetic disturbances. Utilizing Van Allen Probe observations, we statistically analyzed their temporal variations at 55–489 keV as well as their pitch angle distributions (PADs) index n (fitted by sinn∂, where ∂ is the pitch angle) in response to geomagnetic storms. It shows that protons at low energies are more easily accelerated during storms. The threshold of accelerations becomes greater for high-energy protons, while a large value of n can persist for a few days to months. Further investigations suggest that one-quarter of the storms increase the proton flux at all energy channels (55–489 keV) both inside and outside the plasmapause location (Lpp). Specifically, more than half of the storms enhance the flux for protons at Ek > 400 keV inside and close to the Lpp as well as protons at Ek < 100 keV deep inside the Lpp. Comparably, protons at larger pitch angles (near 90°) are more easily lost outside the Lpp, which results in more pronounced pancake PADs with larger n. The index n preferentially decreases at L > 5 during 75% of the storms on the dayside, while it decreases at L = ∼4 during 50% of the storms on the nightside, showing significant day–night asymmetry. Further detailed investigations revealed that source and loss processes, including radial diffusion, magnetopause shadowing, and wave–particle interactions, account for the statistical results. The present study provides quantitative information on the overall characteristics of energetic proton fluxes, which can enhance the comprehension of the radiation belts.

Study on the Loss and Recovery Mechanisms of High-Energy Protons in the Inner Radiation Belt During Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:In this paper, the NOAA17 observation of the protons in the inner radiation belt is used to investigate the variation of the proton flux in the inner radiation belt during geomagnetic storms. It is found that during great storms the protons trapped in the inner belt show two different kinds of loss events in storm time. The proton flux near the outer boundary of the inner belt decreases rapidly and then recovers slowly. The proton flux at the center of the inner belt (or the maximal proton flux in the Southern Atlantic Anomaly (SAA)) shows a quick decrease and a quick recovery. The loss event near the outer boundary mainly exists in the lower energy proton observations, while that near the center of the inner belt appears in all energy channels. The different storm responses of the two loss events imply different loss and recovery mechanisms for the inner belt protons. Through the analysis, we believe that the loss of the proton flux near the outer boundary of the inner belt be caused by the field line curvature scattering and the slowly recovery shows the accumulation of the protons generated by Cosmic Ray Albedo Neutron Decay (GRAND) and the loss event near the center of the inner belt can be accounted for the Dst effect.

Abstract:Various physical processes are known to cause acceleration, loss, and transport of energetic electrons in the Earth's radiation belts, but their quantitative roles in different time and space need further investigation. During the largest storm over the past decade (17 March 2015), relativistic electrons experienced fairly rapid acceleration up to similar to 7 MeV within 2 days after an initial substantial dropout, as observed by Van Allen Probes. In the present paper, we evaluate the relative roles of various physical processes during the recovery phase of this large storm using a 3-D diffusion simulation. By quantitatively comparing the observed and simulated electron evolution, we found that chorus plays a critical role in accelerating electrons up to several MeV near the developing peak location and produces characteristic flat-top pitch angle distributions. By only including radial diffusion, the simulation underestimates the observed electron acceleration, while radial diffusion plays an important role in redistributing electrons and potentially accelerates them to even higher energies. Moreover, plasmaspheric hiss is found to provide efficient pitch angle scattering losses for hundreds of keV electrons, while its scattering effect on > 1 MeV electrons is relatively slow. Although an additional loss process is required to fully explain the overestimated electron fluxes at multi-MeV, the combined physical processes of radial diffusion and pitch angle and energy diffusion by chorus and hiss reproduce the observed electron dynamics remarkably well, suggesting that quasi-linear diffusion theory is reasonable to evaluate radiation belt electron dynamics during this big storm.
Response of High-Energy Protons of the Inner Radiation Belt to Large Magnetic Storms

Abstract:The responses of the high-energy protons (35-70 MeV, 70-140 MeV and 140-500 MeV) below L = 3 to the large geomagnetic magnetic storms (vertical bar Dst vertical bar > 200 nT) during 1998 to 2005 have been investigated with the measurements by three NOAA POES satellites (NOAA-15, 16 and 17). The losses of protons in the outer region of the inner radiation belt are found during the large storms. Similar loss events were also measured by the HEO-3 satellite for lower energy protons (8.5-35 MeV, 16-40 MeV and 27-45 MeV). However, the response of higher energy protons to the storms observed by NOAA satellites is different from that of the lower energy protons. It is shown that some aspects of the loss event and energy dependence during large storms can be accounted for by the trapping limit of the field line curvature scattering mechanism. The maximal L shells of the observed trapped protons are consistent with the critical L shells of the field line curvature scattering. The modeling results based on the storm-time geomagnetic field model (TS04c) and the radiation belt model (AP8) show the inward motion of the outer boundary of trapped protons is caused by the distortion of geomagnetic field during the magnetic storms and depends on proton energy. The additional proton loss in the lower energy channel (35-70 MeV) could be attributed to the storm-caused weakening of geomagnetic field combined with L dependent lifetimes induced by curvature scattering during magnetic storms.
Compressional Ulf Wave Modulation of Energetic Particles in the Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:We present Van Allen Probes observations of modulations in the flux of very energetic electrons up to a few MeV and protons between 1200 and 1400 UT on 19 February 2014. During this event the spacecraft were in the dayside magnetosphere at L⋆≈5.5. The modulations extended across a wide range of particle energies, from 79.80 keV to 2.85 MeV for electrons and from 82.85 keV to 636.18 keV for protons. The fluxes of π/2 pitch angle particles were observed to attain maximum values simultaneously with the ULF compressional magnetic field component reaching a minimum. We use peak‐to‐valley ratios to quantify the strength of the modulation effect, finding that the modulation is larger at higher energies than at lower energies. It is shown that the compressional wave modulation of the particle distribution is due to the mirror effect, which can trap relativistic electrons efficiently for energies up to 2.85 MeV and trap protons up to ≈600 keV. Larger peak‐to‐valley ratios at higher energies also attributed to the mirror effect. Finally, we suggest that protons with energies higher than 636.18 keV cannot be trapped by the compressional ULF wave efficiently due to the finite Larmor radius effect.
Interactions of Energetic Electrons with Ulf Waves Triggered by Interplanetary Shock: Van Allen Probes Observations in the Magnetotail

Abstract:We present in situ observations of a shock-induced substorm-like event on 13 April 2013 observed by the newly launched Van Allen twin probes. Substorm-like electron injections with energy of 30-500 keV were observed in the region from L approximate to 5.2 to 5.5 immediately after the shock arrival (followed by energetic electron drift echoes). Meanwhile, the electron flux was clearly and strongly varying on the ULF wave time scale. It is found that both toroidal and poloidal mode ULF waves with a period of 150s emerged following the magnetotail magnetic field reconfiguration after the interplanetary (IP) shock passage. The poloidal mode is more intense than the toroidal mode. The 90 degrees phase shift between the poloidal mode B-r and E-a suggests the standing poloidal waves in the Northern Hemisphere. Furthermore, the energetic electron flux modulations indicate that the azimuthal wave number is approximate to 14. Direct evidence of drift resonance between the injected electrons and the excited poloidal ULF wave has been obtained. The resonant energy is estimated to be between 150 keV and 230 keV. Two possible scenaria on ULF wave triggering are discussed: vortex-like flow structure-driven field line resonance and ULF wave growth through drift resonance. It is found that the IP shock may trigger intense ULF wave and energetic electron behavior at L approximate to 3 to 6 on the nightside, while the time profile of the wave is different from dayside cases.
Multiple-Band Electric Field Response to the Geomagnetic Storm on 4 November 2021

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact characteristics of the 4 November 2021 magnetic storm across different frequency bands based on the electric field data (EFD) from the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES), categorized into four frequency bands: ULF (Ultra-Low-Frequency, DC to 16 Hz), ELF (Extremely Low-Frequency, 6 Hz to 2.2 kHz), VLF (Very Low-Frequency, 1.8 to 20 kHz), and HF (High-Frequency, 18 kHz to 3.5 MHz). The study reveals that in the ULF band, magnetic storm-induced electric field disturbances are primarily in the range of 0 to 5 Hz, with a significant disturbance frequency at 3.9 ± 1.0 Hz. Magnetic storms also enhance Schumann waves in the ULF band, with 8 Hz Schumann waves dominating in the southern hemisphere and 13 Hz Schumann waves dominating in the northern hemisphere. In the ELF band, the more pronounced anomalies occur at 300 Hz–900 Hz and above 1.8 kHz, with the 300 Hz–900 Hz band anomalies around 780 Hz being the most significant. In the VLF band, the electric field anomalies are mainly concentrated in the 3–15 kHz range. The ELF and VLF bands exhibit lower absolute and relative disturbance increments compared to the ULF band, with the relative perturbation growth rate in the ULF band being approximately 10% higher than in the ELF and VLF bands. Magnetic storm-induced electric field disturbances predominantly occur in the ULF, ELF, and VLF bands, with the most significant disturbances in the ULF band. The electric field perturbations in these three frequency bands exhibit hemispheric asymmetry, with strong perturbations in the northern hemisphere occurring earlier than in the southern hemisphere, corresponding to different Dst minima. No electric field disturbances were observed in the HF band (above 18 kHz). The conclusions of this paper are highly significant for future anti-jamming designs in spacecraft and communication equipment, as well as for the further study of magnetic storms.

Dynamic Responses of Outer Radiation Belt Electron Phase Space Densities to Geomagnetic Storms: A Statistical Analysis Based on Van Allen Probes Observations

Abstract:Using Van Allen Probes observations from September 2012 to June 2019, we statistically investigate responses of the Earth's outer radiation belt electron phase space densities (PSDs) in the adiabatic invariant coordinates to isolated geomagnetic storms. Electron PSDs for μ = 50–5,000 MeV/G, covering energy range of seed, relativistic and ultra‐relativistic electrons, are calculated to evaluate three types of storm‐time PSD responses (i.e., enhancement, depletion, and no change). In statistics, the seed PSD variations are dominated by enhancement‐type events, the percentages of which increase from >50% for small storms (−50 nT 70% for large storms (SYM‐Hmin ≤ −50 nT). The relativistic and ultra‐relativistic PSDs exhibit the three response types with comparable occurrence rates for small storms but present predominantly enhancement‐type variations (>50%) for large storms. Enhanced storm activity increases the enhancement‐type responses for seed PSDs at all L* and for relativistic and ultra‐relativistic PSDs at L* > 3.5. It also results in the increased depletion‐type response occurrence for relativistic and ultra‐relativistic PSDs at lower L*. Our results further indicate that the depletion‐type responses manifest evident dependence on the level of solar and geomagnetic activity and the μ‐value, implying complex physics accounting for outer zone electron losses. Improved knowledge of the storm‐time dynamics of outer radiation belt electron PSDs is valuable to in‐depth comprehension of various mechanisms responsible for the electron acceleration and loss. It has important implications for future simulations and forecasts of radiation belt electron variability, in particular, during geomagnetically disturbed periods.

Abstract:On 25 August 2018, a G3-class geomagnetic storm reached the Earth’s magnetosphere, causing a transient rearrangement of the charged particle environment around the planet, which was detected by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01). We found that the count rates of electrons in the MeV range were characterized by a depletion during the storm’s main phase and a clear enhancement during the recovery caused by large substorm activity, with the key role played by auroral processes mapped into the outer belt. A post-storm rate increase was localized at L-shells immediately above ∼3 and mostly driven by non-adiabatic local acceleration caused by possible resonant interaction with low-frequency magnetospheric waves.
Simultaneous Cross‐Energy Ion Response and Wave Generation after the Impact of an Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks in general have strong impact on particles and electromagnetic field. In this study, we have examined the dynamics of cross-energy ions and plasma waves observed by the Van Allen Probe B satellite which was located near the equator at the noon sector after the impact of an IP shock on 27 Feb, 2014. We found that the ULF waves and electromagnetic waves are induced and the differential fluxes of protons with different energies increased or decreased after the IP shock arrival. For low energy ions (10-100eV), the perpendicular flux increased intensively due to ExB drift and betatron acceleration. These adiabatic processes also accounted for the special behavior of 10~200 keV ions, which are due to the positive gradient in phase space density before the IP shock arrival. In addition, the short-lived ultra-low frequency waves triggered by the IP shock interacted with the ~100 keV protons and resulting in the stripes in pitch angle distribution. Meanwhile, the anisotropic ions of ~50-300 keV generate EMIC wave at higher L shell after the shock arrival. This study reveals that an IP shock event can cause comprehensive responses of different energy ions and drive several plasma waves at the same time.
