Abstract:The main idea of the present study is to investigate in detail the time evolution of the spatial inhomogeneities connected with the ionospheric response to the geomagnetic storm registered in the period of 10–11 May 2024. The obtained ionospheric anomalies represented by the relative deviations of the global Total Electron Content (TEC) data have been utilized in the analysis. The used global TEC data have been converted to a coordinate system with a modip latitude and geographical longitude. In addition to the maps illustrating the global spatial distribution of the geomagnetically forced ionospheric anomalies, a presentation of the observed longitudinal structures by sinusoidal approximation has also been used. The resulting positive and negative responses have been studied depending on the magnetic latitude, local times and the behavior of the geomagnetic activity parameters during the considered event. The interpretation takes into account the known mechanisms for the effect of the geomagnetic storm on the electron density. A special attention is focused on the differences in the two hemispheres at high and mid latitudes, where a simultaneous direct impact of the particle precipitation and the change in the temperature regime of the neutral atmosphere has been assumed. The low-latitude response as a result of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) associated with Disturbed Dynamo Electric Fields (DDEFs) and its relationship with local time has also been considered.

Abstract:This study investigates the responses of the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere in the American–Atlantic longitude sector during the super geomagnetic storm that occurred on 10–11 May 2024. The investigation utilizes multi-instrument datasets, including ground-based observations (GNSS TEC, ionosonde, and Fabry–Perot interferometer) as well as space-borne satellite measurements (GOLD, Swarm, DMSP, and TIMED). Our findings reveal significant day-to-day variations in the storm-time equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), summarized as follows: (1) During the main phase of the storm, the low- and mid-latitude ionosphere experienced a positive storm, with TEC drastically enhanced by 50–100% within a few hours. The EIA crests exhibited a substantial poleward expansion, reaching as high as ±35° MLAT. This expansion was caused by the enhanced fountain effect driven by penetration electric fields, along with increased ambipolar diffusion due to transient meridional wind surges. (2) During the recovery phase of the storm, the global ionosphere was characterized by a substantial negative storm with a 50–80% depletion in TEC. The EIA crests were notably suppressed and merged into a single equatorial band, which can be attributed to the composition change effect and the influence of disturbance dynamo electric fields. These results illustrate the complex processes of magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling during a superstorm, highlighting the significant impacts of space weather on the global ionosphere.

Abstract:The recent superstorm of 2024 May 10–11 is the second largest geomagnetic storm in the space age and the only one that has simultaneous interplanetary data (there were no interplanetary data for the 1989 March storm). The May superstorm was characterized by a sudden impulse (SI + ) amplitude of +88 nT, followed by a three-step storm main-phase development, which had a total duration of ∼9 hr. The cause of the first storm main phase with a peak SYM-H intensity of −183 nT was a fast-forward interplanetary shock (magnetosonic Mach number M ms ∼ 7.2) and an interplanetary sheath with a southward interplanetary magnetic field component B s of ∼40 nT. The cause of the second storm's main phase with an SYM-H intensity of −354 nT was a deepening of the sheath B s to ∼43 nT. A magnetosonic wave (M ms ∼ 0.6) compressed the sheath to a high magnetic field strength of ∼71 nT. Intensified B s of ∼48 nT were the cause of the third and most intense storm main phase, with an SYM-H intensity of −518 nT. Three magnetic cloud events with B s fields of ∼25–40 nT occurred in the storm recovery phase, lengthening the recovery to ∼2.8 days. At geosynchronous orbit, ∼76 keV to ∼1.5 MeV electrons exhibited ∼1–3 orders of magnitude flux decreases following the shock/sheath impingement onto the magnetosphere. The cosmic-ray decreases at Dome C, Antarctica (effective vertical cutoff rigidity <0.01 GV) and Oulu, Finland (rigidity ∼0.8 GV) were ∼17% and ∼11%, respectively, relative to quiet-time values. Strong ionospheric current flows resulted in extreme geomagnetically induced currents of ∼30–40 A in the subauroral region. The storm period is characterized by strong polar-region field-aligned currents, with ∼10 times intensification during the main phase and equatorward expansion down to ∼50° geomagnetic (altitude-adjusted) latitude.

Abstract:The July 2012 geomagnetic storm is an extreme space weather event in solar cycle 24, which is characterized by a southward interplanetary geomagnetic field lasting for about 30 h below -10 nT. In this work, multiple instrumental observations, including electron density from ionosondes, total electron content (TEC) from Global Positioning System, Jason-2, and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, and the topside ion concentration observed by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft are used to comprehensively present the regional differences of the ionospheric response to this event. In the Asian-Australian sector, an intensive negative storm is detected near longitude similar to 120 degrees E on 16 July, and in the topside ionosphere the negative phase is mainly existed in the equatorial region. The topside and bottomside TEC contribute equally to the depletion in TEC, and the disturbed electric fields make a reasonable contribution. On 15 July, the positive storm effects are stronger in the Eastside than in the Westside. The topside TEC make a major contribution to the enhancement in TEC for the positive phases, showing the important role of the equatorward neutral winds. For the American sector, the equatorial ionization anomaly intensification is stronger in the Westside than in the Eastside and shows the strongest feature in the longitude similar to 110 degrees W. The combined effects of the disturbed electric fields, composition disturbances, and neutral winds cause the complex storm time features. Both the topside ion concentrations and TEC reveal the remarkable hemispheric asymmetry, which is mainly resulted from the asymmetry in neutral winds and composition disturbances.
Super‐Intense Geomagnetic Storm on 10–11 May 2024: Possible Mechanisms and Impacts

Abstract:One of the most intense geomagnetic storms of recent times occurred on 10–11 May 2024. With a peak negative excursion of Sym‐H below −500 nT, this storm is the second largest of the space era. Solar wind energy transferred through radiation and mass coupling affected the entire Geospace. Our study revealed that the dayside magnetopause was compressed below the geostationary orbit (6.6 RE) for continuously ∼6 hr due to strong Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure (SWDP). Tremendous compression pushed the bow‐shock also to below the geostationary orbit for a few minutes. Magnetohydrodynamic models suggest that the magnetopause location could be as low as 3.3RE. We show that a unique combination of high SWDP (≥15 nPa) with an intense eastward interplanetary electric field (IEFY ≥ 2.5 mV/m) within a super‐dense Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection lasted for 409 min–is the key factor that led to the strong ring current at much closer to the Earth causing such an intense storm. Severe electrodynamic disturbances led to a strong positive ionospheric storm with more than 100% increase in dayside ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC), affecting GPS positioning/navigation. Further, an HF radio blackout was found to occur in the 2–12 MHz frequency band due to strong D‐ and E‐region ionization resulting from a solar flare prior to this storm.

Abstract:An interplanetary shock can abruptly compress the magnetosphere, excite magnetospheric waves and field-aligned currents, and cause a ground magnetic response known as a sudden commencement (SC). However, the transient (<∼1 min) response of the ionosphere-thermosphere system during an SC has been little studied due to limited temporal resolution in previous investigations. Here, we report observations of a global reversal of ionospheric vertical plasma motion during an SC on 24 October 2011 using ∼6 s resolution Super Dual Auroral Radar Network ground scatter data. The dayside ionosphere suddenly moved downward during the magnetospheric compression due to the SC, lasting for only ∼1 min before moving upward. By contrast, the post-midnight ionosphere briefly moved upward then moved downward during the SC. Simulations with a coupled geospace model suggest that the reversed E ⃗ × B ⃗ vertical drift is caused by a global reversal of ionospheric zonal electric field induced by magnetospheric compression during the SC.

Abstract:This paper investigates the midlatitude ionospheric disturbances over the American/Atlantic longitude sector during an intense geomagnetic storm on 23 April 2023. The study utilized a combination of ground‐based observations (Global Navigation Satellite System total electron content and ionosonde) along with measurements from multiple satellite missions (GOLD, Swarm, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, and TIMED/GUVI) to analyze storm‐time electrodynamics and neutral dynamics. We found that the storm main phase was characterized by distinct midlatitude ionospheric density gradient structures as follows: (a) In the European‐Atlantic longitude sector, a significant midlatitude bubble‐like ionospheric super‐depletion structure (BLISS) was observed after sunset. This BLISS appeared as a low‐density channel extending poleward/westward and reached ∼40° geomagnetic latitude, corresponding to an APEX height of ∼5,000 km. (b) Coincident with the BLISS, a dynamic storm‐enhanced density plume rapidly formed and decayed at local afternoon in the North American sector, with the plume intensity being doubled and halved in just a few hours. (c) The simultaneous occurrence of these strong yet opposite midlatitude gradient structures could be mainly attributed to common key drivers of prompt penetration electric fields and subauroral polarization stream electric fields. This shed light on the important role of storm‐time electrodynamic processes in shaping global ionospheric disturbances.

Abstract:In May 2024, the scientific community observed intense solar eruptions that resulted in an extreme geomagnetic storm and auroral extension, highlighting the need to document and quantify these events. This study mainly focuses on their quantification. The source active region (AR 13664) evolved from 113 to 2761 millionths of the solar hemisphere between 4 May and 14 May 2024. AR 13664's magnetic free energy surpassed 1033 erg on 7 May 2024, triggering 12 X-class flares. Multiple interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) came out from this AR, accelerating solar energetic particles toward Earth. At least four ICMEs seemingly piled up to disturb the interplanetary space, according to the satellite data and interplanetary scintillation data. The shock arrival at 17:05 UT on 10 May 2024 significantly compressed the magnetosphere down to ~ 5.04 R_E, and triggered a deep Forbush decrease. GOES satellite data and ground-based neutron monitors confirmed a ground-level enhancement from 2 UT to 10 UT on 11 May 2024. The ICMEs induced extreme geomagnetic storms, peaking at a Dst index of -412 nT at 2 UT on 11 May 2024, marking the sixth-largest storm since 1957. The AE and AL indices showed extreme auroral extensions that located the AE/AL stations into the polar cap. We gathered auroral records at that time and reconstructed the equatorward boundary of the visual auroral oval to 29.8° invariant latitude. We compared naked-eye and camera auroral visibility, providing critical caveats on their difference. We also confirmed global enhancements of storm-enhanced density of the ionosphere.

Abstract:The ionospheric equivalent currents in the high latitudes and the auroral electrojet system during the geomagnetic storm on July 15–16, 2000 are analyzed by using geomagnetic data from IMAGE chain. The large-scale vortices of equivalent currents are observed in the storm. The vortices on the dusk side of ionosphere correspond to four-celled pattern of plasma convection associated with NBZ, region I and region II field-aligned currents. Only one vortex can be found on the dawn side of ionosphere after interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns southward. In the initial phase of the storm, the center of eastward electrojets tends to shift equatorward. It arrives at 58.62° latitude of corrected geomagnetic coordinates (CGM). The westward electrojets are strong in the main phase. The center of westward electrojets in this period moves equatorward and may be beyond the southernmost station (56.45°) of the chain.
Unveiling key factors in solar eruptions leading to the solar superstorm in 2024 May

Abstract:NOAA active region (AR) 13664/8 produced the most intense geomagnetic effects since the Halloween event of 2003. The resulting extreme solar storm is thought to be the consequence of multiple interacting coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Notably, this AR exhibits exceptionally rapid magnetic flux emergence. The eruptions on which we focus all occurred along collisional polarity inversion lines (PILs) through collisional shearing during a three-day period of extraordinarily high flux emergence (∼10 21 Mx h −1). Our key findings reveal how photospheric magnetic configurations in eruption sources influence solar superstorm formation and geomagnetic responses, and link exceptionally strong flux emergence to sequential homologous eruptions: (1) We identified the source regions of seven halo CMEs that were distributed primarily along two distinct PILs. This distribution suggests two groups of homologous CMEs. (2) The variations in the magnetic flux emergence rates in the source regions are correlated with the CME intensities. This might explain the two contrasting cases of complex ejecta that are observed at Earth. (3) Our calculations of the magnetic field gradients around the CME source regions show strong correlations with eruptions. This provides crucial insights into solar eruption mechanisms and enhances our prediction capabilities for future events.
