Abstract:Magnetic field line curvature (FLC) scattering is a collisionless scattering mechanism that arises when a particle's gyro-radius is comparable to the magnetic field line's curvature radius, resulting in the breaking of the conservation of the first adiabatic invariant. Studies in recent years have explored the implications of FLC scattering on the precipitation of both ring current ions and radiation belt electrons. In this work, we first compare two previous FLC scattering coefficients using test particle calculations. Then, we systematically calculate diffusion coefficients from FLC scattering in radial and MLT directions for particles of various energy levels, as well as its sensitivity to the $Kp$ index. We find that the timescale of FLC scattering is sufficient to account for the sudden loss of MeV electrons near the geostationary orbit during disturbed times. Additionally, the decay time of ring current protons is on the order of hours to minutes, providing an explanation for the ring current decay throughout the recovery phase of magnetic storms. Lastly, we compare the effects of wave-particle resonant scattering and FLC scattering in the vicinity of the midnight equator. Our findings suggest that the impacts of FLC scattering on MeV electrons or hundreds keV protons with smaller pitch angle is comparable to, or even more significant than, the effects of whistler mode or EMIC wave resonant scattering. Our quantitative results should be useful to evaluate the importance of the effects of FLC scattering while modeling the dynamics of radiation belt and ring current.

Abstract:We investigate the magnetospheric MHD and energetic electron response to a Storm Sudden Commencement (SSC) and subsequent magnetopause buffeting, focusing on an interval following an SSC event on 25 November 2001. We find that the electron flux signatures observed by LANL, Cluster, and GOES spacecraft during this event can largely be reproduced using an advective kinetic model for electron phase space density, using externally prescribed electromagnetic field inputs, (herein described as a test-kinetic model) with electromagnetic field inputs provided by a 2-D linear ideal MHD model for ULF waves. In particular, we find modulations in electron flux phase shifted by 90 degrees from the local azimuthal ULF wave electric field (E) and a net enhancement in electron flux after 1.5 h for energies between 500 keV and 1.5 MeV near geosynchronous orbit. We also demonstrate that electrons in this energy range satisfy the drift resonance condition for the ULF waves produced by the MHD model. This confirms the conclusions reached by Tan et al. (2011), that the energization process in this case is dominated by drift-resonant interactions between electrons and MHD fast mode waves, produced by fluctuations in solar wind dynamic pressure.

Field Line Curvature Scattering in the Dayside Off-Equatorial Minima Regions

Abstract:Magnetic field line curvature (FLC) scattering is an effective mechanism for collisionless particle scattering. In the terrestrial magnetosphere, the FLC scattering plays an essential role in shaping the outer boundary of protons radiation belt, the rapid decay of ring current, and the formation of proton isotropic boundary (IB). However, previous studies have yet to adequately investigate the influence of FLC scattering on charged particles in the Earth's dayside magnetosphere, particularly in the off-equatorial magnetic minima regions. This study employs T89 magnetic field model to investigate the impacts of FLC scattering on ring current protons in the dayside magnetosphere, with a specific focus on the off-equatorial minimum regions. We analyze the spatial distributions of single and dual magnetic minima regions, adiabatic parameter, and pitch angle diffusion coefficients due to FLC scattering as functions of $Kp$. The results show that the effects of FLC scattering are significant not only on the dusk and dawn sides but also in the off-equatorial minima regions on the noon. Additionally, we investigate the role of dipole tilt angle in the hemispheric asymmetry of FLC scattering effects. The dipole tilt angle controls the overall displacement of the dayside magnetosphere, resulting in different FLC scattering effects in the two hemispheres. Our study holds significance for understanding the FLC scattering effects in the off-equatorial region of Earth's dayside magnetosphere and for constructing a more accurate dynamic model of particles.

Study on the Loss and Recovery Mechanisms of High-Energy Protons in the Inner Radiation Belt During Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:In this paper, the NOAA17 observation of the protons in the inner radiation belt is used to investigate the variation of the proton flux in the inner radiation belt during geomagnetic storms. It is found that during great storms the protons trapped in the inner belt show two different kinds of loss events in storm time. The proton flux near the outer boundary of the inner belt decreases rapidly and then recovers slowly. The proton flux at the center of the inner belt (or the maximal proton flux in the Southern Atlantic Anomaly (SAA)) shows a quick decrease and a quick recovery. The loss event near the outer boundary mainly exists in the lower energy proton observations, while that near the center of the inner belt appears in all energy channels. The different storm responses of the two loss events imply different loss and recovery mechanisms for the inner belt protons. Through the analysis, we believe that the loss of the proton flux near the outer boundary of the inner belt be caused by the field line curvature scattering and the slowly recovery shows the accumulation of the protons generated by Cosmic Ray Albedo Neutron Decay (GRAND) and the loss event near the center of the inner belt can be accounted for the Dst effect.

Abstract:Magnetopause shadowing (MPS) effect could drive a concurrent dropout of radiation belt electrons and ring current protons. However, its relative role in the dropout of both plasma populations has not been well quantified. Abstract:One of the prominent effects of space weather is the formation of rapid geomagnetic field variations on Earth's surface driven by the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system. These geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) cause geomagnetically induced currents to run through ground conducting systems. In particular, localized GMDs (LGMDs) can be high amplitude and can have an effect on scale sizes less than 100 km, making them hazardous to power grids and difficult to predict. In this study, we examine the ability of the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF) to reproduce LGMDs in the 7 September 2017 event using both existing and new metrics to quantify the success of the model against observation. We show that the high‐resolution SWMF can reproduce LGMDs driven by ionospheric sources, but struggles to reproduce LGMDs driven by substorm effects. We calculate the global maxima of the magnetic fluctuations to show instances when the SWMF captures LGMDs at the correct times but not the correct locations. To remedy these shortcomings we suggest model developments that will directly impact the ability of the SWMF to reproduce LGMDs, most importantly updating the ionospheric conductance calculation from empirical to physics‐based.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of a turbulent scattering mechanism, akin to those influencing solar and galactic cosmic rays propagating in the interplanetary medium, on the population of suprathermal electrons in the solar wind. We employ a Fokker–Planck equation to model the radial evolution of electron pitch angle distributions under the action of magnetic focusing, which moves the electrons away from isotropy, and of a diffusion process that tends to bring them back to it. We compare the steady-state solutions of this Fokker–Planck equation with data obtained from the Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe missions and find a remarkable agreement, varying the turbulent mean free path as the sole free parameter in our model. The obtained mean free paths are of the order of the astronomical unit, and display weak dependence on electron energy within the 100 eV–1 keV range. This value is notably lower than Coulomb collision estimates but aligns well with observed mean free paths of low-rigidity solar energetic particle events. The strong agreement between our model and observations leads us to conclude that the hypothesis of turbulent scattering at work on electrons at all heliospheric distances is justified. We discuss several implications, notably the existence of a low Knudsen number region at large distances from the Sun, which offers a natural explanation for the presence of an isotropic "halo" component at all distances from the Sun—electrons being isotropized in this distant region before traveling back into the inner part of the interplanetary medium.

Modeling and understanding dynamics of charged particles in the Earth's inner magnetosphere

Abstract:The Earth's inner magnetosphere is a very dynamic system, mostly driven by the external solar wind forcing exerted upon the magnetic field of our planet. Disturbances in the solar wind, such as coronal mass ejections and co-rotating interaction regions, cause geomagnetic storms, which lead to prominent changes in charged particle populations of the inner magnetosphere - the plasmasphere, ring current, and radiation belts. Satellites operating in the regions of elevated energetic and relativistic electron fluxes can be damaged by deep dielectric or surface charging during severe space weather events. Predicting the dynamics of the charged particles and mitigating their effects on the infrastructure is of particular importance, due to our increasing reliance on space technologies. The dynamics of particles in the plasmasphere, ring current, and radiation belts are strongly coupled by means of collisions and collisionless interactions with electromagnetic fields induced by the motion of charged particles. Multidimensional numerical models simplify the treatment of transport, acceleration, and loss processes of these particles, and allow us to predict how the near-Earth space environment responds to solar storms. The models inevitably rely on a number of simplifications and assumptions that affect model accuracy and complicate the interpretation of the results. In this dissertation, we quantify the processes that control electron dynamics in the inner magnetosphere, paying particular attention to the uncertainties of the employed numerical codes and tools. We use a set of convenient analytical solutions for advection and diffusion equations to test the accuracy and stability of the four-dimensional Versatile Electron Radiation Belt (VERB-4D) code. We show that numerical schemes implemented in the code converge to the analytical solutions and that the VERB-4D code demonstrates stable behavior independent of the assumed time step. The order of the numerical scheme for the convection equation is demonstrated to affect results of ring current and radiation belt simulations, and it is crucially important to use high-order numerical schemes to decrease numerical errors in the model. Using the thoroughly tested VERB-4D code, we model the dynamics of the ring current electrons during the 17 March 2013 storm. The discrepancies between the model and observations above 4.5 Earth's radii can be explained by uncertainties in the outer boundary conditions. Simulation results indicate that the electrons were transported from the geostationary orbit towards the Earth by the global-scale electric and magnetic fields. We investigate how simulation results depend on the input models and parameters. The model is shown to be particularly sensitive to the global electric field and electron lifetimes below 4.5 Earth's radii. The effects of radial diffusion and subauroral polarization streams are also quantified. We developed a data-assimilative code that blends together a convection model of energetic electron transport and loss and Van Allen Probes satellite data by means of the Kalman filter. We show that the Kalman filter can correct model uncertainties in the convection electric field, electron lifetimes, and boundary conditions. It is also demonstrated how the innovation vector - the difference between observations and model prediction - can be used to identify physical processes missing in the model of energetic electron dynamics. We computed radial profiles of phase space density of ultrarelativistic electrons, using Van Allen Probes measurements. We analyze the shape of the profiles during geomagnetically quiet and disturbed times and show that the formation of new local minimums in the radial profiles coincides with the ground observations of electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) waves. This correlation indicates that EMIC waves are responsible for the loss of ultrarelativistic electrons from the heart of the outer radiation belt into the Earth's atmosphere.

Abstract:Energetic electron precipitation (EEP) during substorms significantly affects ionospheric chemistry and lower‐ionosphere (<100 km) conductance. Two mechanisms have been proposed to explain what causes EEP: whistler‐mode wave scattering, which dominates at low latitudes (mapping to the inner magnetosphere), and magnetic field‐line curvature scattering, which dominates poleward. In this case study, we analyzed a substorm event demonstrating the dominance of curvature scattering. Using ELFIN, POES, and THEMIS observations, we show that 50–1,000 keV EEP was driven by curvature scattering, initiated by an intensification and subsequent earthward motion of the magnetotail current sheet. Using a combination of Swarm, total electron content, and ELFIN measurements, we directly show the location of EEP with energies up to ∼1 MeV, which extended from the plasmapause to the near‐Earth plasma sheet (PS). The impact of this strong substorm EEP on ionospheric ionization is also estimated and compared with precipitation of PS (<30 keV) electrons.

Abstract:Electron and ion fluxes at energies of ∼10 keV−1 MeV can change by orders of magnitude during geomagnetically active periods. This can lead to intensification of particle precipitation into the Earth's atmosphere. The process further affects atmospheric chemistry, which may impact weather and climate on the Earth's surface. In this study, we concentrate on ring current electrons, and investigate precipitation mechanisms using a numerical model based on the Fokker-Planck equation. We focus on a study of the main precipitation mechanisms, and their connection with atmospheric parameters. We investigate the 17 March 2013 storm using the convection–diffusion 4-Dimensional Versatile Electron Radiation Belt (VERB-4D) code, that allows us to quantify the impact of the storm on the electron ring current, and the resulting electron precipitation. We validate our results against observations from the Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) mission, the low Earth orbiting meteorological satellites National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA-15,-16,-17,-18,-19), and Meteorological Operational Satellite MetOp-02, as well as the Van Allen Probes, and produce a data set of precipitating fluxes that covers an energy range from 10 keV to 1 MeV. We calculate the altitude-dependent atmospheric ionization rates, a prerequisite for atmospheric models to estimate effects of geomagnetically active periods on chemical and physical variability of the atmosphere at high latitudes. Atmospheric ionization rates are validated against Atmospheric Ionization during Substorm (AIMOS 2.1-Aisstorm) and Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imagers (SSUSI) values, and show good agreement at high geomagnetic latitudes during the storm time.

Response of High-Energy Protons of the Inner Radiation Belt to Large Magnetic Storms

Abstract:The responses of the high-energy protons (35-70 MeV, 70-140 MeV and 140-500 MeV) below L = 3 to the large geomagnetic magnetic storms (vertical bar Dst vertical bar > 200 nT) during 1998 to 2005 have been investigated with the measurements by three NOAA POES satellites (NOAA-15, 16 and 17). The losses of protons in the outer region of the inner radiation belt are found during the large storms. Similar loss events were also measured by the HEO-3 satellite for lower energy protons (8.5-35 MeV, 16-40 MeV and 27-45 MeV). However, the response of higher energy protons to the storms observed by NOAA satellites is different from that of the lower energy protons. It is shown that some aspects of the loss event and energy dependence during large storms can be accounted for by the trapping limit of the field line curvature scattering mechanism. The maximal L shells of the observed trapped protons are consistent with the critical L shells of the field line curvature scattering. The modeling results based on the storm-time geomagnetic field model (TS04c) and the radiation belt model (AP8) show the inward motion of the outer boundary of trapped protons is caused by the distortion of geomagnetic field during the magnetic storms and depends on proton energy. The additional proton loss in the lower energy channel (35-70 MeV) could be attributed to the storm-caused weakening of geomagnetic field combined with L dependent lifetimes induced by curvature scattering during magnetic storms.

Abstract:Radial diffusion (RD) induced by ULF waves can contribute to particle acceleration and scattering. Past global simulations that incorporate RD often use dipole magnetic fields, which could not realistically reveal the role of RD. To better understand the effects of RD and identify whether a background magnetic field model matters in understanding the ring current dynamics in response to RD, we simulate a storm event with different magnetic configurations using a global kinetic ring current model. Results indicate that RD can effectively diffuse protons of hundreds of keV to inner regions (L ∼ 3.5), especially in recovery phase. Comparisons with in‐situ observations demonstrate that simulations with TS05 overall capture both the intensity and variations of proton fluxes with the aid of RD, whereas that with a dipole field significantly overestimates low‐L region fluxes. This study implies adopting realistic magnetic fields is important for correctly interpreting the role of RD.
