Abstract:Lehmer ['On certain character matrices', Pacific J. Math.6 (1956), 491–499, and 'Power character matrices', Pacific J. Math.10 (1960), 895–907] defines four classes of matrices constructed from roots of unity for which the characteristic polynomials and the kth powers can be determined explicitly. We study a class of matrices which arise naturally in transformation formulae of finite field hypergeometric functions and whose entries are roots of unity and zeroes. We determine the characteristic polynomial, eigenvalues, eigenvectors and kth powers of these matrices. The eigenvalues are natural families of products of Jacobi sums.

Abstract:Supertropical matrix theory was investigated in [6], whose terminology we follow. In this work we investigate eigenvalues, characteristic polynomials and coefficients of characteristic polynomials of supertropical matrices and their powers, and obtain the analog to the basic property of matrices that any power of an eigenvalue of a matrix is an eigenvalue of the corresponding power of the matrix.

Abstract:We consider the set $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain a new upper bound on the number of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ with a given characteristic polynomial $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$, which is uniform with respect to $f$. This complements the asymptotic formula of A. Eskin, S. Mozes and N. Shah (1996) in which $f$ has to be fixed and irreducible. Using this result, among others, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of $s$-tuples of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$, satisfying various multiplicative relations, including multiplicative dependence and bounded generation of a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb Q)$. These problems generalise those studied in the scalar case $n=1$ by F. Pappalardi, M. Sha, I. E. Shparlinski and C. L. Stewart (2018) with an obvious distinction due to the non-commutativity of matrices. Motivated by these problems, we also prove various properties of the variety of complex matrices with fixed characteristic polynomial, including computing the degree of this variety.

In addition, using these properties we have shown that the recurrence relation given as in the formula (1) is true. In fact, Xin and Zhong([4]) showed it earlier. Abstract:We study the characteristic polynomial where the are drawn from the Mittag–Leffler ensemble, i.e. a two-dimensional determinantal point process which generalizes the Ginibre point process. We obtain precise large n asymptotics for the moment generating function , in the case where r is in the bulk, and . This expectation involves an determinant whose weight is supported on the whole complex plane, is rotation-invariant, and has both jump- and root-type singularities along the circle centered at 0 of radius r . This "circular" root-type singularity differs from earlier works on Fisher–Hartwig singularities, and surprisingly yields a new kind of ingredient in the asymptotics, the so-called associated Hermite polynomials .

Abstract:In this paper, we will compute the characteristic polynomials for finite dimensional representations of classical complex Lie algebras and the exceptional Lie algebra of type G2, which can be obtained through the orbits of integral weights under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups and the invariant polynomial theory of the Weyl groups. We show that the characteristic polynomials can be decomposed into products of irreducible orbital factors, each of which is invariant under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups.

Abstract:We investigate spectral conditions on Hermitian matrices of roots of unity. Our main results are conjecturally sharp upper bounds on the number of residue classes of the characteristic polynomial of such matrices modulo ideals generated by powers of $(1-\zeta)$, where $\zeta$ is a root of unity. We also prove a generalisation of a classical result of Harary and Schwenk about a relation for traces of powers of a graph-adjacency matrix, which is a crucial ingredient for the proofs of our main results.

Abstract:We prove that the expectation of the logarithm of the condition number of each of the zeros of the characteristic polynomial of a complex standard Gaussian matrix is ${\Omega}(n)$. This may provide an explanation for the common wisdom in numerical linear algebra that advises against computing eigenvalues via root-finding for characteristic polynomials.

Abstract:E. Bayer-Fluckiger gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be realized as the characteristic polynomial of a semisimple isometry of an even unimodular lattice, by describing the local-global obstruction, and the author extended the result. This article presents a systematic way to compute the obstruction. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Salem number of degree $10$ or $18$ to be realized as the dynamical degree of an automorphism of nonprojective K3 surface, in terms of its minimal polynomial.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field. We show that given any $n$th degree monic polynomial $q(x)\in \mathbb{F}[x]$ and any matrix $A\in\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{F})$ whose trace coincides with the trace of $q(x)$ and consisting in its main diagonal of $k$ 0-blocks of order one, with $k<n-k$, and an invertible non-derogatory block of order $n-k$, we can construct a square-zero matrix $N$ such that the characteristic polynomial of $A+N$ is exactly $q(x)$. We also show that the restriction $k<n-k$ is necessary in the sense that, when the equality $k=n-k$ holds, not every characteristic polynomial having the same trace as $A$ can be obtained by adding a square-zero matrix. Finally, we apply our main result to decompose matrices into the sum of a square-zero matrix and some other matrix which is either diagonalizable, invertible, potent or torsion.

La Budde's Method for Computing Characteristic Polynomials

Abstract:La Budde's method computes the characteristic polynomial of a real matrix A in two stages: first it applies orthogonal similarity transformations to reduce A to upper Hessenberg form H, and second it computes the characteristic polynomial of H from characteristic polynomials of leading principal submatrices of H. If A is symmetric, then H is symmetric tridiagonal, and La Budde's method simplifies to the Sturm sequence method. If A is diagonal then La Budde's method reduces to the Summation Algorithm, a Horner-like scheme used by the MATLAB function POLY to compute characteristic polynomials from eigenvalues. We present recursions to compute the individual coefficients of the characteristic polynomial in the second stage of La Budde's method, and derive running error bounds for symmetric and nonsymmetric matrices. We also show that La Budde's method can be more accurate than POLY, especially for indefinite and nonsymmetric matrices A. Unlike POLY, La Budde's method is not affected by illconditioning of eigenvalues, requires only real arithmetic, and allows the computation of individual coefficients.

Abstract:We explore some interesting features of the characteristic polynomial of the Cartan matrix of a simple Lie algebra. The characteristic polynomial is closely related with the Chebyshev polynomials of first and second kind. In addition, we give explicit formulas for the characteristic polynomial of the Coxeter adjacency matrix, we compute the associated polynomials and use them to derive the Coxeter polynomial of the underlying graph. We determine the expression of the Coxeter and associated polynomials as a product of cyclotomic factors. We use this data to propose an algorithm for factoring Chebyshev polynomials over the integers. Finally, we prove an interesting formula which involves products of sines, the exponents, the Coxeter number and the determinant of the Cartan matrix.

Abstract:A notion of characteristic number of matrix Lie algebras is defined, which is devoted to distinguishing various Lie algebras that are used to generate integrable couplings of soliton equations. That is, the exact classification of the matrix Lie algebras by using computational formulas is given. Here the characteristic numbers also describe the relations between soliton solutions of the stationary zero curvature equations expressed by various Lie algebras.
Characteristic polynomials of products of Wigner matrices: finite-N results and Lyapunov universality

Abstract:We compute the average characteristic polynomial of the hermitised product of $M$ real or complex Wigner matrices of size $N\times N$ and the average of the characteristic polynomial of a product of $M$ such Wigner matrices times the characteristic polynomial of the conjugate matrix. Surprisingly, the results agree with that of the product of $M$ real or complex Ginibre matrices at finite-$N$, which have i.i.d. Gaussian entries. For the latter the average characteristic polynomial yields the orthogonal polynomial for the singular values of the product matrix, whereas the product of the two characteristic polynomials involves the kernel of complex eigenvalues. This extends the result of Forrester and Gamburd for one characteristic polynomial of a single random matrix and only depends on the first two moments. In the limit $M\to\infty$ at fixed $N$ we determine the locations of the zeros of a single characteristic polynomial, rescaled as Lyapunov exponents by taking the logarithm of the $M$th root. The position of the $j$th zero agrees asymptotically for large-$j$ with the position of the $j$th Lyapunov exponent for products of Gaussian random matrices, hinting at the universality of the latter.

Abstract:This article presents a general representation of the characteristic polynomial of the dynamic matrix for multivariable systems in Luenberger's canonical forms . The characteristic polynomial is given by means of the determinant of a polynomial matrix of substantially lower order. Therein, the polynomial coefficients of the single elements are the coefficients of the corresponding blocks of the dynamic matrix. The proposed representation of the characteristic polynomial can be helpful for the design of state-feedback controllers and state observers which is demonstrated by a numerical example.
