Abstract:Consider the Hermite β ensemble, a variant of the classical Gaussian unitary ensemble. Using Dumitriu and Edelman’s matrix model representation, we first calculate the generating function of the second-order correlation of characteristic polynomials. Then we obtain the asymptotic behaviors of the second-order correlation of characteristic polynomials both in the bulk (0<β<4) and at the edge (β>0). Analogs have recently been studied by Götze and Kösters for general Hermitian (real) Wigner matrices.

Abstract:We explore some interesting features of the characteristic polynomial of the Cartan matrix of a simple Lie algebra. The characteristic polynomial is closely related with the Chebyshev polynomials of first and second kind. In addition, we give explicit formulas for the characteristic polynomial of the Coxeter adjacency matrix, we compute the associated polynomials and use them to derive the Coxeter polynomial of the underlying graph. We determine the expression of the Coxeter and associated polynomials as a product of cyclotomic factors. We use this data to propose an algorithm for factoring Chebyshev polynomials over the integers. Finally, we prove an interesting formula which involves products of sines, the exponents, the Coxeter number and the determinant of the Cartan matrix.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic local behavior of the second correlation function of the characteristic polynomials of sparse non-Hermitian random matrices $X_n$ whose entries have the form $x_{jk}=d_{jk}w_{jk}$ with iid complex standard Gaussian $w_{jk}$ and normalised iid Bernoulli$(p)$ $d_{jk}$. It is shown that, as $p\to\infty$, the local asymptotic behavior of the second correlation function of characteristic polynomials near $z_0\in \mathbb{C}$ coincides with those for Ginibre ensemble: it converges to a determinant with Ginibre kernel in the bulk $|z_0|<1$, and it is factorized if $|z_0|>1$. For the finite $p>0$, the behavior is different and exhibits the transition between three different regimes depending on values of $p$ and $|z_0|^2$.

Abstract:We study $k$-point correlators of characteristic polynomials in non-Hermitian ensembles of random matrices, focusing on the real, complex and quaternion $N \times N$ Ginibre ensembles. Our approach is based on the technique of character expansions, which expresses the correlator as a sum over partitions involving Schur functions. We show how to re-sum the expansions in terms of representations which interchange the roles of $N$ and $k$. We also provide a probabilistic interpretation of the character expansion analogous to the Schur measure, linking the correlators to the distribution of the top row in certain Young diagrams. In more specific examples we evaluate these expressions explicitly in terms of $k \times k$ determinants or Pfaffians. We show that our approach extends to other ensembles, such as truncations of random unitary matrices.

Abstract:The study of the spectrum of coupled random matrices has received rather little attention. To the best of our knowledge, coupled random matrices have been studied, to some extent, by Mehta. In this work, we explain how the integrable technology can be brought to bear to gain insight into the nature of the distribution of the spectrum of coupled Hermitean random matrices and the equations the associated probabilities satisfy. In particular, the two-Toda lattice, its algebra of symmetries and its vertex operators will play a prominent role in this interaction. Namely, the method is to introduce time parameters, in an artificial way, and to dress up a certain matrix integral with a vertex integral operator, for which we find Virasoro-like differential equations. These methods lead to very simple nonlinear third-order partial differential equations for the joint statistics of the spectra of two coupled Gaussian random matrices.

Abstract:Some puzzles which arise in matrix models with multiple cuts are presented. They are present in the smoothed eigenvalue correlators of these models. First a method is described to calculate smoothed eigenvalue correlators in random matrix models with eigenvalues distributed in a single-cut, previous known results are reproduced. The method is extended to symmetric two-cut random matrix models. The correlators are written in a form suitable for application to mesoscopic systems. Connections are made with the smooth correlators derived using the Orthogonal Polynomial (OP) method. A few interesting observations are made regarding even and odd density-density correlators and cross-over correlators in $Z_2$ symmetric random matrix models.

Abstract:We consider the set $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain a new upper bound on the number of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ with a given characteristic polynomial $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$, which is uniform with respect to $f$. This complements the asymptotic formula of A. Eskin, S. Mozes and N. Shah (1996) in which $f$ has to be fixed and irreducible. Using this result, among others, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of $s$-tuples of matrices from $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb Z; H)$, satisfying various multiplicative relations, including multiplicative dependence and bounded generation of a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb Q)$. These problems generalise those studied in the scalar case $n=1$ by F. Pappalardi, M. Sha, I. E. Shparlinski and C. L. Stewart (2018) with an obvious distinction due to the non-commutativity of matrices. Motivated by these problems, we also prove various properties of the variety of complex matrices with fixed characteristic polynomial, including computing the degree of this variety.

Abstract:The quantum double Schubert polynomials studied by Kirillov and Maeno, and by Ciocan-Fontanine and Fulton, are shown to represent Schubert classes in Kim's presentation of the equivariant quantum cohomology of the flag variety. We define parabolic analogues of quantum double Schubert polynomials, and show that they represent Schubert classes in the equivariant quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties. For complete flags Anderson and Chen have announced a proof with different methods.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb C$ be the set of complex numbers, and let $\mathcal P$ be a collection of complex polynomial maps in several variables. Assuming at least one $P\in\mathcal P$ depends on at least two variables, we classify all possibilities for the structure $(\mathscr M;\mathcal P)$ up to definable equivalence. In particular, outside a short list of exceptions, we show that $(\mathscr M;\mathcal P)$ always defines $+$ and $\times$. Our tools include Zilber's Restricted Trichotomy, as well as the classification of symmetric non-expanding pairs of polynomials over $\mathbb C$ from arithmetic combinatorics. Along the way, we also give a new condition for a reduct $\mathscr M=(M,...)$ of a smooth curve over an algebraically closed field to recover all constructible subsets of powers of $M$.

Abstract:For a family of near banded Toeplitz matrices, generalized characteristic polynomials are shown to be orthogonal polynomials of two variables, which include the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind on the deltoid as a special case. These orthogonal polynomials possess maximal number of real common zeros, which generate a family of Gaussian cubature rules in two variables.

Abstract:We study matrix integration over the classical Lie groups $U(N),Sp(2N),O(2N)$ and $O(2N+1)$, using symmetric function theory and the equivalent formulation in terms of determinants and minors of Toeplitz$\pm$Hankel matrices. We establish a number of factorizations and expansions for such integrals, also with insertions of irreducible characters. As a specific example, we compute both at finite and large $N$ the partition functions, Wilson loops and Hopf links of Chern-Simons theory on $S^{3}$ with the aforementioned symmetry groups. The identities found for the general models translate in this context to relations between observables of the theory. Finally, we use character expansions to evaluate averages in random matrix ensembles of Chern-Simons type, describing the spectra of solvable fermionic models with matrix degrees of freedom.

In this work we investigate eigenvalues, characteristic polynomials and coefficients of characteristic polynomials of supertropical matrices and their powers, and obtain the analog to the basic property of matrices that any power of an eigenvalue of a matrix is an eigenvalue of the corresponding power of the matrix.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a general formula for the characteristic polynomial of a finitely dimensional representation of Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2, \C )$ and the form for these characteristic polynomials, and prove there is one to one correspondence between representations and their characteristic polynomials. We define a product on these characteristic polynomials, endowing them with a monoid structure.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the symplectic characteristic polynomial of an endomorphism of a symplectic vector space. This is a polynomial in two variables and can be considered as a generalization of the characteristic polynomial of the endomorphism in the context of symplectic linear algebra. One of the goal of this paper is to prove that the symplectic characteristic polynomial is a complete symplectic invariant of symplectically diagonalizable endomorphisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we will compute the characteristic polynomials for finite dimensional representations of classical complex Lie algebras and the exceptional Lie algebra of type G2, which can be obtained through the orbits of integral weights under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups and the invariant polynomial theory of the Weyl groups. We show that the characteristic polynomials can be decomposed into products of irreducible orbital factors, each of which is invariant under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups.

Abstract:Coupled cluster theory produced arguably the most widely used high-accuracy computational quantum chemistry methods. Despite the approach's overall great computational success, its mathematical understanding is so far limited to results within the realm of functional analysis. The coupled cluster amplitudes, which are the targeted objects in coupled cluster theory, correspond to solutions to the coupled cluster equations, which is a system of polynomial equations of at most degree four. The high dimensionality of the electronic Schrödinger equation and the non-linearity of the coupled cluster ansatz have so far stalled a formal analysis of this polynomial system. In this article, we present algebraic investigations that shed light on the coupled cluster equations and the root structure of this ansatz. This is of importance for the a posteriori evaluation of coupled cluster calculations. To that end, we investigate the root structure by means of Newton polytopes. We derive a general v-description, which is subsequently turned into an h-description for explicit examples. This perspective reveals an apparent connection between Pauli's exclusion principle and the geometrical structure of the Newton polytopes. We also propose an alternative characterization of the coupled cluster equations projected onto singles and doubles as cubic polynomials on an algebraic variety with certain sparsity patterns. Moreover, we provide numerical simulations of two computationally tractable systems, namely, the two electrons in four spin-orbitals system and the three electrons in six spin-orbitals system. These simulations provide novel insight into the root structure of the coupled cluster solutions when the coupled cluster ansatz is truncated.
