Abstract:We observe that the characteristic polynomial of a linearly perturbed semidefinite matrix can be used to give the convergence rate of alternating projections for the positive semidefinite cone and a line. As a consequence, we show that such alternating projections converge at $O(k^{-1/2})$, independently of the singularity degree. A sufficient condition for the linear convergence is also obtained. Our method directly analyzes the defining equation for an alternating projection sequence and does not use error bounds.

Abstract:A $\mathbf{GL}$-variety is a (typically infinite dimensional) variety modeled on the polynomial representation theory of the general linear group. In previous work, we studied these varieties in characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain results in positive characteristic: for example, we prove a version of Chevalley's theorem on constructible sets. We give an application of our theory to strength of polynomials.

Abstract:Given a multiarrangement of hyperplanes we define a series by sums of the Hilbert series of the derivation modules of the multiarrangement. This series turns out to be a polynomial. Using this polynomial we define the characteristic polynomial of a multiarrangement which generalizes the characteristic polynomial of an arrangement. The characteristic polynomial of an arrangement is a combinatorial invariant, but this generalized characteristic polynomial is not. However, when the multiarrangement is free, we are able to prove the factorization theorem for the characteristic polynomial. The main result is a formula that relates ‘global’ data to ‘local’ data of a multiarrangement given by the coefficients of the respective characteristic polynomials. This result gives a new necessary condition for a multiarrangement to be free. Consequently it provides a simple method to show that a given multiarrangement is not free.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field. We show that given any $n$th degree monic polynomial $q(x)\in \mathbb{F}[x]$ and any matrix $A\in\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{F})$ whose trace coincides with the trace of $q(x)$ and consisting in its main diagonal of $k$ 0-blocks of order one, with $k<n-k$, and an invertible non-derogatory block of order $n-k$, we can construct a square-zero matrix $N$ such that the characteristic polynomial of $A+N$ is exactly $q(x)$. We also show that the restriction $k<n-k$ is necessary in the sense that, when the equality $k=n-k$ holds, not every characteristic polynomial having the same trace as $A$ can be obtained by adding a square-zero matrix. Finally, we apply our main result to decompose matrices into the sum of a square-zero matrix and some other matrix which is either diagonalizable, invertible, potent or torsion.

Abstract:E. Bayer-Fluckiger gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be realized as the characteristic polynomial of a semisimple isometry of an even unimodular lattice, by describing the local-global obstruction, and the author extended the result. This article presents a systematic way to compute the obstruction. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Salem number of degree $10$ or $18$ to be realized as the dynamical degree of an automorphism of nonprojective K3 surface, in terms of its minimal polynomial.

Abstract:Multiple orthogonal polynomials (MOP) are a non-definite version of matrix orthogonal polynomials. They are described by a Riemann-Hilbert matrix Y consisting of four blocks Y_{1,1}, Y_{1,2}, Y_{2,1} and Y_{2,2}. In this paper, we show that det Y_{1,1} (det Y_{2,2}) equals the average characteristic polynomial (average inverse characteristic polynomial, respectively) over the probabilistic ensemble that is associated to the MOP. In this way we generalize classical results for orthogonal polynomials, and also some recent results for MOP of type I and type II. We then extend our results to arbitrary products and ratios of characteristic polynomials. In the latter case an important role is played by a matrix-valued version of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel. Our proofs use determinantal identities involving Schur complements, and adaptations of the classical results by Heine, Christoffel and Uvarov.

Abstract:Planar functions are special functions from a finite field to itself that give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. We consider polynomials over a finite field $K$ that induce planar functions on infinitely many extensions of $K$; we call such polynomials exceptional planar. Exceptional planar monomials have been recently classified. In this paper we establish a partial classification of exceptional planar polynomials. This includes results for the classical planar functions on finite fields of odd characteristic and for the recently proposed planar functions on finite fields of characteristic two.

Abstract:For $p$ prime, let $\mathcal{H}^n$ be the linear span of characteristic functions of hyperplanes in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$. We establish new upper bounds on the dimension of $\mathcal{H}^n$ over $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, or equivalently, on the rank of point-hyperplane incidence matrices in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$ over $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. Our proof is based on a variant of the polynomial method using binomial coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z}$ as generalized polynomials. We also establish additional necessary conditions for a function on $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$ to be an element of $\mathcal{H}^n$.

Abstract:We study the characteristic polynomial where the are drawn from the Mittag–Leffler ensemble, i.e. a two-dimensional determinantal point process which generalizes the Ginibre point process. We obtain precise large n asymptotics for the moment generating function , in the case where r is in the bulk, and . This expectation involves an determinant whose weight is supported on the whole complex plane, is rotation-invariant, and has both jump- and root-type singularities along the circle centered at 0 of radius r . This "circular" root-type singularity differs from earlier works on Fisher–Hartwig singularities, and surprisingly yields a new kind of ingredient in the asymptotics, the so-called associated Hermite polynomials .

Abstract:Since the seminal work of Keating and Snaith, the characteristic polynomial of a random Haar-distributed unitary matrix has seen several of its functional studied or turned into a conjecture; for instance: $ \bullet $ its value in $1$ (Keating-Snaith theorem), $ \bullet $ the truncation of its Fourier series up to any fraction of its degree, $ \bullet $ the computation of the relative volume of the Birkhoff polytope, $ \bullet $ its products and ratios taken in different points, $ \bullet $ the product of its iterated derivatives in different points, $ \bullet $ functionals in relation with sums of divisor functions in $ \mathbb{F}_q[X] $. $ \bullet $ its mid-secular coefficients, $ \bullet $ the "moments of moments", etc. We revisit or compute for the first time the asymptotics of the integer moments of these last functionals and several others. The method we use is a very general one based on reproducing kernels, a symmetric function generalisation of some classical orthogonal polynomials interpreted as the Fourier transform of particular random variables and a local Central Limit Theorem for these random variables. We moreover provide an equivalent paradigm based on a randomisation of the mid-secular coefficients to rederive them all. These methodologies give a new and unified framework for all the considered limits and explain the apparition of Hankel determinants or Wronskians in the limiting functional.

Abstract:It is well known that a polynomial in one variable is completely determined by its zeros (counting multiplicities). We generalize this result to an ideal of polynomials in several variables by introducing the characteristic spaces of the ideal. One finds that the ideal is completely determined by its characteristic spaces on a characteristic set. In particular, a primary ideal is completely determined by its characteristic space at any zero point. Some straightforward applications of the above results yield the algebraic reduction theorem for analytic Hilbert modules in several variables. Also, we obtain some general rigidity results for analytic Hilbert modules by using the techniques of AF-envelopes of analytic Hilbert modules.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the symplectic characteristic polynomial of an endomorphism of a symplectic vector space. This is a polynomial in two variables and can be considered as a generalization of the characteristic polynomial of the endomorphism in the context of symplectic linear algebra. One of the goal of this paper is to prove that the symplectic characteristic polynomial is a complete symplectic invariant of symplectically diagonalizable endomorphisms.

Abstract: Motivated by Barr{\'\i}a-Halmos's \cite[Question 19]{barria1982asymptotic} and Halmos's \cite[Problem 237]{Halmos1978A}, we explore projections in Toeplitz algebra on the Hardy space. We show that the product of two Toeplitz (Hankel) operators is a projection if and only if it is the projection onto one of the invariant subspaces of the shift (backward shift) operator. As a consequence one obtains new proofs of criterion for Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators to be partial isometries. Furthermore, we completely characterize when the self-commutator of a Toeplitz operator is a projection. This provides a class of nontrivial projections in Toeplitz algebra.

Abstract:We investigate spectral conditions on Hermitian matrices of roots of unity. Our main results are conjecturally sharp upper bounds on the number of residue classes of the characteristic polynomial of such matrices modulo ideals generated by powers of $(1-\zeta)$, where $\zeta$ is a root of unity. We also prove a generalisation of a classical result of Harary and Schwenk about a relation for traces of powers of a graph-adjacency matrix, which is a crucial ingredient for the proofs of our main results.
