Abstract:The isomorphism problem for infinite finitely presented groups is probably the hardest among standard algorithmic problems in group theory. Classes of groups where it has been completely solved are nilpotent groups, hyperbolic groups, and limit groups. In this short paper, we address the problem of isomorphism to particular groups, including free groups. We also address the algorithmic problem of embedding a finitely presented group in a given limit group.

Beating the Generator-Enumeration Bound for $p$-Group Isomorphism

Abstract:We consider the group isomorphism problem: given two finite groups G and H specified by their multiplication tables, decide if G cong H. For several decades, the n^(log_p n + O(1)) generator-enumeration bound (where p is the smallest prime dividing the order of the group) has been the best worst-case result for general groups. In this work, we show the first improvement over the generator-enumeration bound for p-groups, which are believed to be the hard case of the group isomorphism problem. We start by giving a Turing reduction from group isomorphism to n^((1 / 2) log_p n + O(1)) instances of p-group composition-series isomorphism. By showing a Karp reduction from p-group composition-series isomorphism to testing isomorphism of graphs of degree at most p + O(1) and applying algorithms for testing isomorphism of graphs of bounded degree, we obtain an n^(O(p)) time algorithm for p-group composition-series isomorphism. Combining these two results yields an algorithm for p-group isomorphism that takes at most n^((1 / 2) log_p n + O(p)) time. This algorithm is faster than generator-enumeration when p is small and slower when p is large. Choosing the faster algorithm based on p and n yields an upper bound of n^((1 / 2 + o(1)) log n) for p-group isomorphism.

On the Modular Isomorphism Problem for 2-generated groups with cyclic derived subgroup

Abstract:We continue the analysis of the Modular Isomorphism Problem for $2$-generated $p$-groups with cyclic derived subgroup, $p>2$, started in [D. García-Lucas, Á. del Río, and M. Stanojkovski. On group invariants determined by modular group algebras: even versus odd characteristic. Algebr. Represent. Theory. <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10468-022-10182-x" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>, 2022]. We show that if $G$ belongs to this class of groups, then the isomorphism type of the quotients $G/(G')^{p^3}$ and $G/\gamma_3(G)^p$ are determined by its modular group algebra. In fact, we obtain a more general but technical result, expressed in terms of the classification \cite{OsnelDiegoAngel}. We also show that for groups in this class of order at most $p^{11}$, the Modular Isomorphism Problem has positive answer. Finally, we describe some families of groups of order $p^{12}$ whose group algebras over the field with $p$ elements cannot be distinguished with the techniques available to us.

Abstract:The group isomorphism problem determines whether two groups, given by their Cayley tables, are isomorphic. For groups with order $n$, an algorithm with $n^{(\log n + O(1))}$ running time, attributed to Tarjan, was proposed in the 1970s [Mil78]. Despite the extensive study over the past decades, the current best group isomorphism algorithm has an $n^{(1 / 4 + o(1))\log n}$ running time [Ros13]. The isomorphism testing for $p$-groups of (nilpotent) class 2 and exponent $p$ has been identified as a major barrier to obtaining an $n^{o(\log n)}$ time algorithm for the group isomorphism problem. Although the $p$-groups of class 2 and exponent $p$ have much simpler algebraic structures than general groups, the best-known isomorphism testing algorithm for this group class also has an $n^{O(\log n)}$ running time. In this paper, we present an isomorphism testing algorithm for $p$-groups of class 2 and exponent $p$ with running time $n^{O((\log n)^{5/6})}$ for any prime $p > 2$. Our result is based on a novel reduction to the skew-symmetric matrix tuple isometry problem [IQ19]. To obtain the reduction, we develop several tools for matrix space analysis, including a matrix space individualization-refinement method and a characterization of the low rank matrix spaces.

Abstract:We show that the modular isomorphism problem has a positive answer for groups of nilpotency class 2 with cyclic center, i.e., that for such p -groups G and H an isomorphism between the group algebras FG and FH implies an isomorphism of the groups G and H for F the field of p elements. For groups of odd order this implication is also proven for F being any field of characteristic p . For groups of even order we need either to make an additional assumption on the groups or on the field.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number. A longstanding conjecture asserts that every finite non-abelian $p$-group has a non-inner automorphism of order $p$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is an odd order finite non-abelian monolithic $p$-group such that every maximal subgroup of $G$ is non-abelian and $[Z(M), g] \leq Z(G)$ for every maximal subgroup $M$ of $G$ and $g \in G \setminus M$. Then $G$ has a non-inner automorphism of order $p$ leaving the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ elementwise fixed.

Abstract:In this article, we explore the problem of determining isomorphisms between the twisted complex group algebras of finite $p$-groups. This problem bears similarity to the classical group algebra isomorphism problem and has been recently examined by Margolis-Schnabel. Our focus lies on a specific invariant, referred to as the generalized corank, which relates to the twisted complex group algebra isomorphism problem. We provide a solution for non-abelian $p$-groups with generalized corank at most three.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We construct a $p$-group $P$ of nilpotency class two, rank seven and exponent $p$, such that $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ induces $N_{\mathrm{GL}(7,p)}(G_2(p)) = Z(\mathrm{GL}(7,p)) G_2(p)$ on the Frattini quotient $P/\Phi(P)$. The constructed group $P$ is the smallest $p$-group with these properties, having order $p^{14}$, and when $p = 3$, our construction gives two nonisomorphic $p$-groups. To show that $P$ satisfies the specified properties, we study the action of $G_2(q)$ on the octonion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_q$, for each power $q$ of $p$, and explore the reducibility of the exterior square of each irreducible seven-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q[G_2(q)]$-module.

Abstract:Fixed point ratios for primitive permutation groups have been extensively studied. Relying on a recent work of Burness and Guralnick, we obtain further results in the area. For a prime $p$ and a finite group $G$, we use fixed point ratios to study the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and the minimal size of a covering by proper subgroups of the set of $p$-elements of $G$.

Abstract:Let G be a group, p a prime and Hp(G)$$H_p(G)$$ the subgroup of G generated by the elements of order different from p. In 1957, D. R. Hughes conjectured that either Hp(G)=1$$H_p(G)=1$$, Hp(G)=G$$H_p(G)=G$$, or [G:Hp(G)]=p$$[G:H_p(G)]=p$$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for finite extraspecial p-groups (where p>2$$p>2$$), finite minimal non-abelian p-groups and finite non-abelian p-groups having cyclic maximal subgroup. Moreover, we give some sufficient conditions for 2-generated finite non-abelian p-groups which guarantee the existence of the Hughes conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove results on the relationship between the complexity of the group and color isomorphism problems. The difficulty of color isomorphism problems is known to be closely linked to the the composition factors of the permutation group involved. Previous works are primarily concerned with applying color isomorphism to bou nded degree graph isomorphism, and have therefore focused on the alternating composit ion factors, since those are the bottleneck in the case of graph isomorphism. We consider the color isomorphism problem with composition factors restricted to those other than the alternating group, show that group isomorphism reduces in n^(O(log log n)) time to this problem, and, conversely, that a special case of this color isomorphism problem reduces to a slight generalization of group isomorphism. We then sharpen our results by identifying the projective special linear group as the main obstacle to faster algorithms for group isomorphism and prove that the aforementioned reduc tion from group isomorphism to color isomorphism in fact produces only cyclic and projective special linear factors. Our results demonstrate that, just as the alternatin g group was a barrier to faster algorithms for graph isomorphism for three decades, the projective special linear group is an obstacle to faster algorithms for group isomorphism.

Abstract:A finite abelian $p$-group having an automorphism $x$ such that $1+\ldots+x^{p-1}=0$, can be viewed as a module over an appropriate discrete valuation ring $\mathcal{O}$ containing $\mathbb{Z}_p$ (the ring of $p$-adic integer). This yields the natural problem of comparing the invariants of $A$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-module to its invariants as an $\mathcal{O}$-module. We solve the latter problem in a more general context, and give some applications to the structure of some $p$-groups and their automorphisms.

Abstract:Berger and Colmez introduced a theory of families of overconvergent etale (';) -modules associated to families of p-adic Galois representations over p-adic Banach algebras. However, in contrast with the classical theory of (';) -modules, the functor they obtain is not an equivalence of categories. In this paper, we prove that when the base is an affinoid space, every family of (overconvergent) etale (';) -modules can locally be converted into a family of p-adic representations in a unique manner, providing the “local” equivalence. There is a global mod p obstruction related to the moduli of residual representations.
