Abstract:We show that the modular isomorphism problem has a positive answer for groups of nilpotency class 2 with cyclic center, i.e. that for such p-groups G and H an isomorphism between the group algebras FG and FH implies an isomorphism of the groups G and H for F the field of p elements. For groups of odd order this implication is also proven for F being any field of characteristic p. For groups of even order we need either to make an additional assumption on the groups or on the field.

Abstract:We continue the analysis of the Modular Isomorphism Problem for $2$-generated $p$-groups with cyclic derived subgroup, $p>2$, started in [D. García-Lucas, Á. del Río, and M. Stanojkovski. On group invariants determined by modular group algebras: even versus odd characteristic. Algebr. Represent. Theory. <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10468-022-10182-x" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>, 2022]. We show that if $G$ belongs to this class of groups, then the isomorphism type of the quotients $G/(G')^{p^3}$ and $G/\gamma_3(G)^p$ are determined by its modular group algebra. In fact, we obtain a more general but technical result, expressed in terms of the classification \cite{OsnelDiegoAngel}. We also show that for groups in this class of order at most $p^{11}$, the Modular Isomorphism Problem has positive answer. Finally, we describe some families of groups of order $p^{12}$ whose group algebras over the field with $p$ elements cannot be distinguished with the techniques available to us.

Abstract:As a result of impressive research <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.07231" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.07231">arXiv:2106.07231</a>, D. Garc\'ıa-Lucas, Á. del Río and L. Margolis defined an infinite series of non-isomorphic $2$-groups $G$ and $H$, whose group algebras $\mathbb{F}G$ and $\mathbb{F}H$ over the field $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_2$ are isomorphic, solving negatively the long-standing Modular Isomorphism Problem (MIP). In this note we give a different perspective on their examples and show that they are special cases of a more general construction. We also show that this type of construction for $p>2$ does not provide a similar counterexample to the MIP.

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, analogs of Wilson?s and Wolstenholme?s theorems on the solution sets S+ = {n ? Z* p | n ? a + b ? ab (mod p)} and S? = {n ? Z* p | n ? a ? b ? ab (mod p)} are given, where Z* p denote a reduced residue system modulo p. We also establish congruences about sum and product of the quadratic residues in S+ or in S? modulo p. Finally, we raise a problem on how to solve Hadamard?s conjecture in the last section.

Abstract:For every finite group $H$ and every finite $H$-module $A$, we determine the subgroup of negligible classes in $H^2(H,A)$, in the sense of Serre, over fields with enough roots of unity. As a consequence, we show that for every odd prime $p$, every integer $n\geq 3$, and every field $F$ containing a primitive $p$-th root of unity, there exists a continuous $n$-dimensional mod $p$ representation of the absolute Galois group of $F(x_1,\dots,x_p)$ which does not lift modulo $p^2$. This answers a question of Khare and Serre, and disproves a conjecture of Florence.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from 2 and residual characteristic $p$. This paper concerns the $\ell$-modular representations of a connected reductive group $G$ distinguished by a Galois involution, with $\ell$ an odd prime different from $p$. We start by proving a general theorem allowing to lift supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ distinguished by an arbitrary closed subgroup $H$ to a distinguished supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$-representation. Given a quadratic field extension $E/F$ and an irreducible $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n(E)$, we verify the Jacquet conjecture in the modular setting that if the Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ is irreducible and conjugate-self-dual, then $\pi$ is either $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$-distinguished or $(\mathrm{GL}_n(F),\omega_{E/F})$-distinguished (where $\omega_{E/F}$ is the quadratic character of $F^\times$ associated to the quadratic field extension $E/F$ by the local class field theory), but not both, which extends one result of Sécherre to the case $p=2$. We give another application of our lifting theorem for supercuspidal representations distinguished by a unitary involution, extending one result of Zou to $p=2$.

Abstract:The Feigin--Frenkel theorem states that, over the complex numbers, the centre of the universal affine vertex algebra at the critical level is an infinite rank polynomial algebra. The first author and W.~Wang observed that in positive characteristics, the universal affine vertex algebra contains a large central subalgebra known as the $p$-centre. They conjectured that at the critical level the centre should be generated by the Feigin--Frenkel centre and the $p$-centre. In this paper we prove the conjecture for classical simple Lie algebras for $p$ larger than the Coxeter number, and for exceptional Lie algebras in large characteristics. Finally, we give an example which shows that at non-critical level the center is larger than the $p$-centre.

Abstract:The question whether non-isomorphic finite $p$-groups can have isomorphic modular group algebras was recently answered in the negative by García-Lucas, Margolis and del Río [J. Reine Angew. Math. 783 (2022), pp. 269-274]. We embed these negative solutions in the class of two-generated finite $2$-groups with dihedral central quotient, and solve the original question for all groups within this class. As a result, we discover new negative solutions and simple algebra isomorphisms. At the same time, the positive solutions for most of the groups in this class give some insights what makes the negative solutions special.

Abstract:For a given ϵ > 0 , we show that there exist two finite index subgroups of PSL_2(ℤ) which are (1+ϵ) -quasisymmetrically conjugated and the conjugation homeomorphism is not conformal. This implies that for any ϵ > 0 there are two finite regular covers of the Modular once punctured torus T 0 (or just the Modular torus) and a (1+ϵ) -quasiconformal map between them that is not homotopic to a conformal map. As an application of the above results, we show that the orbit of the basepoint in the Teichmüller space T ( S p ) of the punctured solenoid S p under the action of the corresponding Modular group (which is the mapping class group of S p [6], [7]) has the closure in T ( S p ) strictly larger than the orbit and that the closure is necessarily uncountable.

Abstract:We classify all $n$-dimensional reduced Cohen-Macaulay modular quotient variety $\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{F}^n/C_{2p}$ and study their singularities, where $p$ is a prime number and $C_{2p}$ denotes the cyclic group of order $2p$. In particular, we present an example that demonstrates that the problem proposed by Yasuda \cite[Problem 6.6]{Yas2015} has a negative answer if the condition that $G$ is a small subgroup was dropped.

Abstract:For a prime number $p$ and integer $x$ with $\gcd(x,p)=1$ let $\overline{x}$ denote the multiplicative inverse of $x$ modulo $p.$ In the present paper we are interested in the problem of distribution modulo $p$ of the sequence $$ \overline{x}, \qquad x =1, \ldots, N, $$ and in lower bound estimates for the corresponding exponential sums. As representative examples, we state the following two consequences of the main results. For any fixed $A > 1$ and for any sufficiently large integer $N$ there exists a prime number $p$ with $$ (\log p)^A \asymp N $$ such that $$ \max_{\gcd(a,p)=1}\left|\sum_{x\le N}{\mathbf e}_p(a\overline{x})\right|\gg N. $$ For any fixed positive $\gamma< 1$ there exists a positive constant $c$ such that the following holds: for any sufficiently large integer $N$ there is a prime number $p > N$ such that $$ N > \exp\left(c(\log p\log\log p)^{\gamma/(1+\gamma)}\right) $$ and $$ \max_{\gcd(a,p)=1} \left|\sum_{x\le N}{\mathbf e}_p(a \overline{x})\right|\gg N^{1-\gamma}. $$

Abstract:Let $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$ defined over a non-archimedean local field $F$ of odd residue characteristic $p$, and $B$ be the standard Borel subgroup of $G$. In this note, we study the problem of the restriction of irreducible smooth $\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p$-representations of $G$ to $B$, and we obtain various results which are analogous to that of Pa$\check{\text{s}}$k$\bar{\text{u}}$nas on $GL_2 (F)$ (\cite{Pas07}).

Abstract:In his 1934 paper, G.Birkhoff poses the problem of classifying pairs $(G,U)$, where $G$ is an abelian group and $U\subset G$ a subgroup, up to automorphisms of $G$. In general, Birkhoff's Problem is not considered feasible. In this note, we fix a prime number $p$ and assume that $G$ is a direct sum of cyclic $p$-groups and $U\subset G$ is a subgroup. Under the assumption that the factor group $G/U$ is $p$-bounded, we show that each such pair $(G,U)$ has a unique direct sum decomposition into pairs of type $(\mathbb Z/(p^n),\mathbb Z/(p^n))$ or $(\mathbb Z/(p^n), (p))$. On the other hand, if we assume $U$ is a $p$-bounded subgroup of $G$ and in addition that $G/U$ is a direct sum of cyclic $p$-groups, we show that each such pair $(G,U)$ has a unique direct sum decomposition into pairs of type $(\mathbb Z/(p^n),0)$ or $(\mathbb Z/(p^n), (p^{n-1}))$. We generalize the above results to modules over commutative discrete valuation rings.
