Abstract:Polymeric membranes have been applied in industrial gas separations for decades. Competing technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and sorption processes, require the gases to be either condensed or thermally regenerated from the sorbents. In contrast, membrane gas separation does not involve phase transition, representing the potential for a more energy efficient and eco-friendly separation process. However, the overall energy consumption by membrane gas separation is highly dependent on the quality of the membrane employed for the separation process. With the goal of reducing the energy input needed for creating the transmembrane pressure difference, numerous bulk polymers have been investigated. However, less effort has been devoted to processing polymers into ultrathin membranes and investigating their gas permeation properties, which can be quite different from their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advances in fabricating ultrathin gas-selective polymeric membranes. Several classes of ultrathin polymeric membranes are highlighted: microporous polymers, facilitated transport polymeric membranes, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), polyamides and other commercial polymers. The application of gas-selective polymeric membranes beyond gas separation is also included as a meaningful extension to this review.

Abstract:Membrane separation using hollow fibers has become one of the emerging technologies which underwent a rapid growth during the past few decades. In this article, recent progresses (last 12years) on polymeric hollow fiber membranes have been discussed. In particular, the following topics were identified as the recent trends in the hollow fiber research. Characterizations of membrane especially by atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been reported. New hollow fiber membranes for gas-separation have been developed. New polymers and techniques have been introduced in making high performance hollow fibers. Many PVDF based membranes have been developed. Orientation of polymer molecule during spinning was also investigated. However the mechanism of orientation is not fully investigated.

Abstract:Melt-spinning and stretching (MS-S) method was proposed for preparing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes with excellent mechanical properties. The morphology and properties of PVDF fibers and membranes were investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), field emission scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimeter, and tensile experiment. SAXS results indicated that the stacked lamellar structure aligned normal to the fiber axis was separated and deformed when the fibers were strained, and the long period of the strained fibers increased accordingly. Factors affecting the membrane properties were mainly spin-draw ratio, annealing temperature, time, and stretching rate. Experimental results showed that the average pore size, porosity, and N-2 permeation of the membranes all increased with the increasing spin-draw ratios and annealing temperatures. Annealing the nascent PVDF hollow fibers at 145 degrees C for 12 h was suitable for attaining membranes with good performance. In addition, the amount and size of the micropores of the membrane increased obviously with stretching rate. Tensile experinlEnt indicated PVDF hollow fiber membranes made by MS-S process had excellent mechanical properties. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Electrospun Nanofibers for Water Distillation and Pervaporation

Abstract:Electrospinning is a cost-effective technique for nanofiber fabrication with the most control over the parameters of nanofibers varying in size, shape, and doping. The as-prepared electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) benefitting from characteristics such as interconnected porous structure, high porosity, large specific surface area, and flexible chemical/physical functionlization, has allowed it to possess unique advantage over conventional membranes in expense and efficiency, and evolve into a promising candidate in water desalination and water purification. Here, the progress of nanofiber-based composite membranes in two representative thermal-driven water treatment process, membrane distillation (MD) and pervaporation (PV), are mainly introduced. For the application of electrospun nanofibrous in membrane distillation, this chapter presents the facile approaches including spraying and dip-coating to fabricate advanced ENMs materials with super- and intrinsic-hydrophobicity. Fabricating parameters and adjusting measures such as such as spray density, coating amount, and the control of nanoparticle and polymer distribution are demonstrated in detail, as well as their influence on surface morphology and hydrophobicity. It is crucial to have a thin ENMs only with super- or intrinsic-hydrophobicity acting well in continuous vacuum membrane distillation. The micro-mechanism underlying membrane wetting behavior is put forward lastly in this part. For the application of electrospun nanofibrous in pervaporation, the main challenges in this field concerning the preparation of thin-film composite electrospun nanofiber membranes for pervaporation are discussed. The status and future perspectives for the strategies to fabricate a thin and dense selective layer on electrospun nanofiltration supports are reviewed. It is expected that the progress of ENMs technology will promote the prosperity and utilization in water treatment and will be the cost-effective and energy-saving avenue in addressing global water scarcity.

Abstract:Commercial ultrafiltration membranes have proliferated globally for water treatment. However, their pore sizes are too large to sieve gases. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) feature well-developed microporosity yet are difficult to be fabricated into membranes. Herein, we report a strategy to prepare molecular-sieving membranes by partitioning the mesoscopic channels in water ultrafiltration membrane (PSU) into ultra-micropores by space-confined polymerization of multi-functionalized rigid building units. Nine CMP@PSU membranes were obtained, and their separation performance for H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 pairs surpass the Robeson upper bound and rival against the best of those reported membranes. Furthermore, highly crosslinked skeletons inside the channels result in the structural robustness and transfer into the excellent aging resistance of the CMP@PSU. This strategy may shed light on the design and fabrication of high-performance polymeric gas separation membranes.

Abstract:The aggravation of environmental problems such as water scarcity and air pollution has called upon the need for a sustainable solution globally. Membrane technology, owing to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, has emerged as one of the favorable technologies for water and air purification. Among all of the membrane configurations, hollow fiber membranes hold promise due to their outstanding packing density and ease of module assembly. Herein, this review systematically outlines the fundamentals of hollow fiber membranes, which comprise the structural analyses and phase inversion mechanism. Furthermore, illustrations of the latest advances in the fabrication of organic, inorganic, and composite hollow fiber membranes are presented. Key findings on the utilization of hollow fiber membranes in microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), pervaporation, gas and vapor separation, membrane distillation, and membrane contactor are also reported. Moreover, the applications in nuclear waste treatment and biomedical fields such as hemodialysis and drug delivery are emphasized. Subsequently, the emerging R&D areas, precisely on green fabrication and modification techniques as well as sustainable materials for hollow fiber membranes, are highlighted. Last but not least, this review offers invigorating perspectives on the future directions for the design of next-generation hollow fiber membranes for various applications. As such, the comprehensive and critical insights gained in this review are anticipated to provide a new research doorway to stimulate the future development and optimization of hollow fiber membranes.

Abstract:The hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) were widely used as tissue engineering scaffold The efficacy of the HFMs were affected by the porosity of the HFMs. In this study, the HFMs were prepared with dry-jet wet spinning method. In order to improve the performance of the HFMs, different spinning I parameters were applied to systematically investigating the effects of the fabrication conditions on the porosity of the HFMs. A 1-D diffusion model was set to numerically study the volume fraction distribution along the wall thickness. The porosity of the HFMs show a significant decrease in the porosity as the dope concentration increases. The morphology analyses showed that a higher dope concentration leads to a denser porous structure which result in a lower porosity. The results were discussed based on the phase inversion process and the I-D model was built to numerically analyze the polymer volume fraction distribution in the HFMs cross section. This study can help to better understand the effects of the different fabrication conditions on the morphology of the HFMs.

Abstract:The hollow fiber configuration, comparing to flat-sheet and tubular modules, have gained much attention in a gas separation field due to its exceptionally high packing density. However, the decline in inherent selectivity exhibited by specific shape (namely hollow fiber) would result from the existence of pin-hole in its skin layer of hollow fiber. Hence, the post-treatment for the modification of pin-hole is crucial for this eye-catching configuration. Herein, the effects of bare fiber pore structure and corresponding post-treatment parameters including the concentration of modifier and modification method on the morphologies and permeation properties of the resultant membranes were investigated. The enhanced performance of polymeric hollow fiber after dip-coating in 6 wt. % polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) solution was observed, which was due to modification of pin-hole. Subsequently, while the method of post-treatment was changed from dip-coating to internal coating, the hydrogen permeance had been increased by 3–4 times, benefiting from the less PDMS intrusion into the fiber pores. Meanwhile, its excellent separation factor toward H 2 /CH 4 pair up to 65 also was showcased, confirming the presence of selective inner surface. In conclusion, this work provides a facile post-treatment to advance the gas transport capability of polymeric hollow fiber as well as maintaining the inherent permeance as maximum.

Abstract:Research and development progress in the preparation of hollow fiber composite nanofiltration membranes by interfacial polymerization method in recent years is overviewed.The performances of hollow fiber composite nanofiltration membranes fabricated with different substrate membrane materials and at different interfacial polymerization conditions as well as the modification of nanofiltration membrane are introduced in particular.In addition,the ways to improve the performance of hollow fiber composite nanofihration membranes through modifying the substrate membrane or adding additives during interfacial polymerization are discussed.Finally,the problems that may be encountered in industrial scale-up for different types of products are analyzed.

Abstract:In the realm of gas purifications, hollow fiber membranes have gained significant prominence due to their unique advantages. However, achieving defect-free membranes poses a considerable challenge. In this study, we addressed this challenge with a novel copolymer, 6FDA-DAM:DAP(2:1), comprising 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 2,4.6-Trimethy-m-phenylenediamine (DAM), and a phenolphthalein-derived diamine of 3,3′-diaminophenolphthalein (DAP). We found that defect-free hollow fiber membranes could be prepared when 20 wt% or more ethanol was added in the polymer dope solution, but this led to the formation of oval hollow fibers that would be flattened under high pressure. We solved this limitation by lowering ethanol content to 15 wt%, adding 2 wt% LiNO3, and increasing the air–gap distance. These measures reduced the difference in phase inversion rates between the surface region and the bulk phase of the nascent hollow fiber. The CO2 permeance of this defect-free hollow fiber membrane reached 282 GPU with a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 50.2. Highly permeable defective hollow fiber membranes were also developed using a polymer dope without LiNO3 and a low THF content of 5 wt%. After coated by silicone rubber, CO2 permeance of the membrane reached 554 GPU with a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 45.0. In mixed gas tests, the two membranes exhibited O2 permeances of approximately 43.3 and 75.3 GPU, with O2/N2 selectivities of 5.5 and 5.4, respectively. Their CO2 permeances were 281 and 465 GPU, with CO2/CH4 selectivities of 45 and 41, CO2/N2 selectivities of 35.7 and 33.3, respectively. These separation performances were among the best of state-of-art polymeric hollow fiber membranes and demonstrated great potential for gas separation applications such as natural gas sweetening, flue gas treatment, and air separation.

Abstract:Abstract Poly(arylene ether)s (PAEs) engineering plastics are a type of high-performance material which are excellent in thermal resistance, mechanical properties, and have low dielectric constant and anti-corrosion. Over recent decades, PAEs further combined with electrospinning technology to fabricate as large surface-to-volume ratio and porosity membrane materials for high-performance applications. In this review, progresses of PAEs-based electrospun nanofibers and fiber reinforced composites including separate membranes, proton exchange membranes, oil-water separation filters, bio-scaffolds and humidity sensors, etc. are presented together with their corresponding high-performance applications in the fields of battery, wastewater treatment, bioengineering and sensor. Finally, current challenges and future development directions of PAEs-based electrospun nanofibers are discussed.

Abstract:Designing hollow fiber (HF) membrane modules occupies one of the key positions in the development of efficient membrane processes for various purposes. In developing HF membrane modules, it is very important to have a uniform HF distribution and flow mixing in the shell side to significantly improve mass transfer and efficiency. This work suggests the application of different textile 3D HF structures (braided hoses and woven tape fabrics). The 3D structures consist of melt-spun, dense HFs based on poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP). Since the textile processing of HFs can damage the wall of the fiber or close the fiber bore, the membrane properties of the obtained structures are tested with a CO2/CH4 mixture in the temperature range of 0 to 40 °C. It is shown that HFs within the textile structure keep the same transport and separation characteristics compared to initial HFs. The mechanical properties of the PMP-based HFs allow their use in typical textile processes for the production of various membrane structures, even at a larger scale. PMP-based membranes can find application in separation processes, where other polymeric membranes are not stable. For example, they can be used for the separation of hydrocarbons or gas mixtures with volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:The development of porous polymeric membranes is an important area of application in separation technology. This article summarizes the development of porous polymers from the perspectives of materials and methods for membrane production. Polymers such as polyethylene, polydimethylsiloxane, polypropylene, polyimide, and polytetrafluoroethylene are reviewed due to their outstanding thermal stability, chemical resistance, mechanical strength, and low cost. Six different methods for membrane fabrication are critically reviewed, including thermally induced phase separation, melt-spinning and cold-stretching, phase separation micromolding, imprinting/soft molding, manual punching, and three-dimensional printing. Each method is described in details related to the strategy used to produce the porous polymeric membranes with a specific morphology and separation performances. The key factors associated with each method are presented, including solvent/non-solvent system type and composition, polymer solution composition and concentration, processing parameters, and ambient conditions. Current challenges are also described, leading to future development and innovation to improve these membranes in terms of materials, fabrication equipment, and possible modifications.

Abstract:Poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) hollow fibers were prepared and fabricated into gas separation or microporous membranes by the melt-spun and cold-stretched method. PMP resin was melt-extruded into hollow fibers with cold air as the cooling medium. The effects of take-up speed and thermotreatment on the mechanical behavior and morphology of the fibers were investigated. Scanning electronic microscope (SEM) photos were used to reveal the geometric structure of the section and Surface of the hollow fibers. It was found that the original fiber had an asymmetric Structure. A "sandwich" mode was used to describe the formation of this special fine structure. And a series of PMP hollow-fiber membranes were prepared by subsequent drawing, and it was found that there was a "skin-core" structure on the cross section of these hollow-fiber membranes. Asymmetric or microporous PMP hollow-fiber membranes could be obtained by controlling posttreatment conditions. The morphology of these membranes were characterized by SEM, and the gas (oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide) permeation properties of the membranes was measured. The results indicate that the annealing time of the original fiber and the stretching ratio were the key factors influencing the structure of the resulting membrane. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
