Abstract:We study a family of moduli spaces and corresponding quantum invariants introduced recently by Fan-Jarvis-Ruan. The family has a wall-and-chamber structure relative to a positive rational parameter is an element of. For a Fermat quasi-homogeneous polynomial W (not necessarily of Calabi-Yau type), we study natural generating functions packaging the invariants. Our wall-crossing formula relates the generating functions by showing that they all lie on the Lagrangian cone associated to the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of W. For arbitrarily small parameter is an element of, a specialization of our generating function is a hypergeometric series called the big I-function which determines the entire Lagrangian cone. As a special case of our wall-crossing, we obtain a new geometric interpretation of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror theorem.
Wightman fields for two-dimensional conformal field theories with pointed representation category

Abstract:Two-dimensional full conformal field theories have been studied in various mathematical frameworks, from algebraic, operator-algebraic to categorical. In this work, we focus our attention on theories with chiral components having pointed braided tensor representation subcategories, namely having automorphisms whose equivalence classes necessarily form an abelian group. For such theories, we exhibit the explicit Hilbert space structure and construct primary fields as Wightman fields for the two-dimensional full theory. Given a finite collection of chiral components with automorphism categories with trivial total braiding, we also construct a local extension of their tensor product as a chiral component. We clarify the relations with the Longo-Rehren construction, and illustrate these results with concrete examples including the U(1)-current.

Abstract:For any non-degenerate, quasi-homogeneous hypersurface singularity, we describe a family of moduli spaces, a virtual cycle, and a corresponding cohomological field theory associated to the singularity. This theory is analogous to Gromov-Witten theory and generalizes the theory of r-spin curves, which corresponds to the simple singularity A_r-1. We also resolve two outstanding conjectures of Witten. The first conjecture is that ADE-singularities are self-dual; and the second conjecture is that the total potential functions of ADE-singularities satisfy corresponding ADE-integrable hierarchies. Other cases of integrable hierarchies are also discussed.
Compact Wannier Functions in One Dimension

Abstract:Wannier functions have widespread utility in condensed matter physics and beyond. Topological physics, on the other hand, has largely involved the related notion of compactly-supported Wannier-type functions, which arise naturally in flat bands. In this paper, we establish a connection between these two notions, by finding the necessary and sufficient conditions under which compact Wannier functions exist in one dimension. We present an exhaustive construction of models with compact Wannier functions and show that the Wannier functions are unique, and in general, distinct from the corresponding maximally-localized Wannier functions.

Non-unitary Wightman CFTs and non-unitary vertex algebras

Abstract:We give an equivalence of categories between: (i) Möbius vertex algebras which are equipped with a choice of generating family of quasiprimary vectors, and (ii) (not-necessarily-unitary) Möbius-covariant Wightman conformal field theories on the unit circle. We do not impose any technical restrictions on the theories considered (such as finite-dimensional conformal weight spaces or simplicity), yielding the most general equivalence between these two axiomatizations of two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. This provides new opportunities to study non-unitary vertex algebras using the lens of algebraic conformal field theory and operator algebras, which we demonstrate by establishing a non-unitary version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem.

Abstract:The axiomatic Wightman formulation for nonderivative conformal field theory is adopted to derive conformal bootstrap equation for the four point function. The equivalence between PCT theorem and {\it weak local commutativity}, due to Jost, play a very crucial role in axiomatic field theory. The theorem is suitably adopted for conformal field theory to derive the desired equations in CFT. We demonstrate that the two Wightman functions are analytic continuation of each other.

Abstract:We construct a generalized Witten genus for spin$^c$ manifolds, which takes values in level 1 modular forms with integral Fourier expansion on a class of spin$^c$ manifolds called string$^c$ manifolds. We also construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for $8k+2$ dimensional spin manifolds. The Landweber-Stong type vanishing theorems are proven for the generalized Witten genus and the mod 2 Witten genus on string$^c$ and string (generalized) complete intersections in (product of) complex projective spaces respectively.
Witten deformation for non-Morse functions and gluing formula for analytic torsions

Abstract:This paper concentrates on analyzing Witten deformation for a family of non-Morse functions parametrized by $T\in \mathbb{R}_+$, resulting in a novel, purely analytic proof of the gluing formula for analytic torsions in complete generality. Intriguingly, the gluing formula in this article could be reformulated as the Bismut-Zhang theorem for non-Morse functions, and from the perspective of Vishik's theory of moving boundary problems, the deformation parameter $T$ parametrizes a family of boundary conditions. Our proof also makes use of an interesting connection between small eigenvalues of Witten Laplacians and Mayer-Vietoris sequences. Finally, these new techniques could be extended to analytic torsion forms and will play key roles in our future study of the higher Cheeger-Müller theorem for general flat bundles.

Abstract:A nonlinear Wightman field is taken to be a nonlinear map from a linear space of test functions to a linear space of Hilbert space operators, with inessential modifications to other axioms only to the extent dictated by the introduction of nonlinearity. Two approaches to nonlinear quantum fields are constructed and discussed, the first of which, starting from Lagrangian QFT, offers a fresh perspective on renormalization, while the second, starting from linear Wightman fields, provides an extensive range of well-defined nonlinear theories.
Fusion and positivity in chiral conformal field theory

Abstract:In this article we show that the conformal nets corresponding to WZW models are rational, resolving a long-standing open problem. Specifically, we show that the Jones-Wassermann subfactors associated with these models have finite index. This result was first conjectured in the early 90s but had previously only been proven in special cases, beginning with Wassermann's landmark results in type A. The proof relies on a new framework for the systematic comparison of tensor products (a.k.a. `fusion') of conformal net representations with the corresponding tensor product of vertex operator algebra modules. This framework is based on the geometric technique of `bounded localized vertex operators,' which realizes algebras of observables via insertion operators localized in partially thin Riemann surfaces. We obtain a general method for showing that Jones-Wassermann subfactors have finite index, and apply it to additional families of important examples beyond WZW models. We also consider applications to a class of positivity phenomena for VOAs, and use this to outline a program for identifying unitary tensor product theories of VOAs and conformal nets even for badly-behaved models.

Weight-Lattice Discretization of Weyl-Orbit Functions

Abstract:Weyl-orbit functions have been defined for each simple Lie algebra, and permit Fourier-like analysis on the fundamental region of the corresponding affine Weyl group. They have also been discretized, using a refinement of the coweight lattice, so that digitized data on the fundamental region can be Fourier-analyzed. The discretized orbit function has arguments that are redundant if related by the affine Weyl group, while its labels, the Weyl-orbit representatives, invoke the dual affine Weyl group. Here we discretize the orbit functions in a novel way, by using the weight lattice. A cleaner theory results, with symmetry between the arguments and labels of the discretized orbit functions. Orthogonality of the new discretized orbit functions is proved, and leads to the construction of unitary, symmetric matrices with Weyl-orbit-valued elements. For one type of orbit function, the matrix coincides with the Kac-Peterson modular $S$ matrix, important for Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory.

Abstract:Both Feynman integrals and holographic Witten diagrams can be represented as multivariable hypergeometric functions of a class studied by Gel'fand, Kapranov & Zelevinsky known as GKZ or $\mathcal{A}$-hypergeometric functions. Among other advantages, this formalism enables the systematic construction of highly non-trivial weight-shifting operators known as 'creation' operators. We derive these operators from a physics perspective, highlighting their close relation to the spectral singularities of the integral as encoded by the facets of the Newton polytope. Many examples for Feynman and Witten diagrams are given, including novel weight-shifting operators for holographic contact diagrams. These in turn allow momentum-space exchange diagrams of different operator dimensions to be related while keeping the spacetime dimension fixed. In contrast to previous constructions, only non-derivative vertices are involved.

Abstract:Under the announcement by Alain Connes that the Wodzicki residue of the inverse square of the Dirac operator is proportional to the Einstein–Hilbert action of general relativity, we derive the Lichnerowicz-type formula for the Witten deformation of the non-minimal de Rham–Hodge operator and the gravitational action in the case of n-dimensional compact manifolds without boundary. Finally, we present the proof of the Kastler–Kalau–Walze-type theorem for the Witten deformation of the non-minimal de Rham–Hodge operator on four- and six-dimensional oriented compact manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:We construct a centerless W-infinity type of algebra in terms of a generator of a centerless Virasoro algebra and an abelian spin-1 current. This algebra conventionally emerges in the study of pseudo-differential operators on a circle or alternatively within KP hierarchy with Watanabe's bracket. Construction used here is based on a special deformation of the algebra $w_{\infty}$ of area preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-manifold. We show that this deformation technique applies to the two-loop WZNW and conformal affine Toda models, establishing henceforth $W_{\infty}$ invariance of these models.

Abstract:We establish several Witten type rigidity and vanishing theorems for twisted Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds. We obtain our results by combining the modular method, modular transgression and some careful analysis of odd Chern classes for cocycles in odd K-theory. Moreover we discover that in odd dimensions, the fundamental group of manifolds plays an important role in the rigidity.

Abstract:A Weyl ordering product operation (with its representative symbol) is introduced. On the basis of the operation, a technique of integration within a Weyl ordered product is Put forward. Application of the technique to the coherent state representation leads us to derive the Weyl ordered forms of some important operators in quantum mechanics, which can be rigorously checked by the relation between our Weyl ordering product operation and the Weyl correspondence rule.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of generalized modular functors with Hilbert spaces of infinite dimension in general, and show that a generalized modular functor with data of conformal dimensions determines uniquely wave functions as its flat sections. Furthermore, we study an example of generalized modular functors derived from the Liouville conformal field theory. In this example, wave functions are seen to be gluing conformal blocks which are identified with eigenfunctions in the quantum Teichm\"uller theory.

Equivalence Relations on Vertex Operator Algebras, II: Witt Equivalence and Orbifolds

Abstract:When can two strongly rational vertex operator algebras or 1+1d rational conformal field theories (RCFTs) be related by topological manipulations? For vertex operator algebras, the term "topological manipulations" refers to operations like passing to a conformal extension or restricting to a conformal subalgebra; for RCFTs, topological manipulations include operations like gauging (or orbifolding) a finite subpart of a generalized global symmetry or interpolating to a new theory via a topological line interface of finite quantum dimension. Inspired by results in the theory of even lattices, and also the theory of tensor categories, we say that two strongly rational vertex operator algebras are Witt equivalent if their central charges agree and if their representation categories are Witt equivalent as modular tensor categories. Two RCFTs are said to be Witt equivalent if their central charges agree and if their associated 2+1d topological field theories can be separated by a topological surface. We argue that Witt equivalence is necessary for two theories to be related by topological manipulations. We conjecture that it is also sufficient, and give proofs in various special cases. We relate this circle of ideas to the problem of classifying RCFTs, and to lore concerning deformation classes of quantum field theories. We use the notion of Witt equivalence to argue, assuming the conjectural classification of unitary, $c=1$ RCFTs, that all of the finite global symmetries of the $\mathrm{SU}(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model are invertible. Finally, we sketch a "quantum Galois theory" for chiral CFTs, which generalizes prior mathematical literature by incorporating non-invertible symmetries; we illustrate this non-invertible Galois theory in the context of the monster CFT, for which we produce a Fibonacci symmetry.
