Abstract:Wannier functions have widespread utility in condensed matter physics and beyond. Topological physics, on the other hand, has largely involved the related notion of compactly-supported Wannier-type functions, which arise naturally in flat bands. In this paper, we establish a connection between these two notions, by finding the necessary and sufficient conditions under which compact Wannier functions exist in one dimension. We present an exhaustive construction of models with compact Wannier functions and show that the Wannier functions are unique, and in general, distinct from the corresponding maximally-localized Wannier functions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to determine under what conditions compact - supported Wannier functions (CWFs) can exist in one - dimensional systems. Specifically, the authors aim to find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of compact - supported Wannier functions and show how to construct these functions. The main contribution in the paper lies in establishing the connection between compact - supported Wannier functions and strictly local projectors (SL projectors), and proving that compact - supported Wannier functions can be constructed if and only if the corresponding band projectors are strictly local. ### Main problems of the paper 1. **Existence conditions of compact - supported Wannier functions**: - Determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of compact - supported Wannier functions in one - dimensional systems. - Prove the relationship between these conditions and the strict locality of projectors. 2. **Construction of compact - supported Wannier functions**: - Provide a method to construct a model with compact - supported Wannier functions. - Show the uniqueness of these functions and their relationship with other types of Wannier functions (such as maximally - localized Wannier functions). 3. **Relationship between compact - supported Wannier functions and maximally - localized Wannier functions**: - Explore whether compact - supported Wannier functions are always maximally - localized Wannier functions. - Illustrate through specific examples that even in the case where compact - supported Wannier functions exist, maximally - localized Wannier functions are not necessarily compact - supported. ### Main conclusions - **Existence conditions of compact - supported Wannier functions**: Compact - supported Wannier functions exist if and only if the corresponding band projectors are strictly local. - **Construction of compact - supported Wannier functions**: An iterative method is provided. Through unitary rotations, the maximum hopping range of the projector is gradually reduced, and finally, compact - supported Wannier functions are obtained. - **Uniqueness of compact - supported Wannier functions**: For a single band, compact - supported Wannier functions are unique (up to a phase factor). But for multiple bands, compact - supported Wannier functions are not unique. - **Relationship between compact - supported Wannier functions and maximally - localized Wannier functions**: Even in the case where compact - supported Wannier functions exist, maximally - localized Wannier functions are usually not compact - supported but exponentially - localized. ### Formulas and symbols - **Strict locality of projectors**: \[ \langle x_1, i | P | x_2, j \rangle = 0 \quad \text{whenever} \quad |x_1 - x_2| > R \] where \( R \) is the maximum hopping range of the projector. - **Construction of compact - supported Wannier functions**: \[ P(k) \rightarrow U^\dagger(k) P(k) U(k) = \text{diag}(1, \ldots, 1, 0, \ldots, 0) \] where \( U(k) \) is the total unitary rotation matrix composed of multiple unitary rotations \( U_i(k) \). - **Size of compact - supported Wannier functions**: \[ \text{Size of compact - supported Wannier functions} \leq R + 1 \] where \( R \) is the maximum hopping range of the projector. ### Summary Through strict mathematical derivations and construction methods, this paper solves the problems of the existence conditions and construction of compact - supported Wannier functions in one - dimensional systems and explores their relationship with maximally - localized Wannier functions. These results are of great significance for understanding related phenomena in topological physics and condensed - matter physics.
