Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:We construct a mathematical theory ofWitten's Gauged Linear Sigma Model (GLSM). Our theory applies to a wide range of examples, including many cases with nonabelian gauge group. Both the Gromov-Witten theory of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection X and the Landau-Ginzburg dual (FJRW theory) of X can be expressed as gauged linear sigma models. Furthermore, the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence can be interpreted as a variation of the moment map or a deformation of GIT in the GLSM. This paper focuses primarily on the algebraic theory, while a companion article will treat the analytic theory.
Weyl structures with special holonomy on compact conformal manifolds

Abstract:We consider compact conformal manifolds $(M,[g])$ endowed with a closed Weyl structure $\nabla$, i.e. a torsion-free connection preserving the conformal structure, which is locally but not globally the Levi-Civita connection of a metric in $[g]$. Our aim is to classify all such structures when both $\nabla$ and $\nabla^g$, the Levi-Civita connection of $g$, have special holonomy. In such a setting, $(M,[g],\nabla)$ is either flat, or irreducible, or carries a locally conformally product (LCP) structure. Since the flat case is already completely classified, we focus on the last two cases. When $\nabla$ has irreducible holonomy we prove that $(M,g)$ is either Vaisman, or a mapping torus of an isometry of a compact nearly Kähler or nearly parallel $\mathrm{G}_2$ manifold, while in the LCP case we prove that $g$ is neither Kähler nor Einstein, thus reducible by the Berger-Simons Theorem, and we obtain the local classification of such structures in terms of adapted metrics.

Abstract:A Weyl structure is a bundle over space-time, whose fiber at each space-time point is a space of maximally isotropic complex tangent planes. We develop the theory of Weyl connections for Weyl structures and show that the requirement that the connection be torsion-free fixes the Weyl connection uniquely. Further we show that to each such Weyl connection, there is naturally associated a (2, 3, 5)-Pfaffian system, as first analyzed by Cartan. We determine the associated G_2-conformal structure and calculate it explicitly in the cases of the Kapadia family of space-times and of the Schwarzschild solution

Generalized Wigner-Weyl calculus for gauge theory and non-dissipative transport

Abstract:We consider a theory of fermions interacting with a (in general, non-Abelian) gauge field. The theory is assumed to be essentially inhomogeneous, which might be provided by non-trivial background fields interacting with both fermions and gauge bosons. For this theory, a version of Wigner-Weyl calculus is constructed, in which the Wigner transformation of the fermion Green function belongs to the adjoint representation of the gauge group. We demonstrate the power of the proposed formalism through the representation of responses of vector and axial currents to the gauge field strength through the topological invariants composed of the Wigner transformed two-point Green functions. This way a new family of non-dissipative transport phenomena is introduced. In particular, we discuss the non-Abelian versions of the chiral separation effect and of the quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:This paper contains a brief sketch of some methods that can be used to obtain the Wigner function for a number of systems. We give an overview of the technique as it is applied to some simple differential systems related to diffusion problems in one dimension. We compute the Wigner function for the harmonic oscillator, the $xp$ interaction, and a hyperbolic oscillator. These systems are shown to share several properties in common related to the Whittaker function and various formulae for the Laguerre polynomials. To contrast with the techniques that are applicable to problems involving continuous states, we then show that by expanding the solution space to the hyperbolic plane and utilising some results from matrix calculus, we are able to recover a number of interesting identities for SU(1,1) and the pseudosphere. We close with a discussion of some more advanced topics in the theory of the Wigner function.

Abstract:We construct Horava-Lifshitz gravities that are invariant under anisotropic Weyl scaling. This construction is based on an extension of the group of symmetries of healthy extended Horava-Lifshitz gravity and RFDiff invariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We find their Hamiltonian formulation and determine their constraint structure.

Abstract:In this paper we give an extensive description of Weyl quadratic gravity as the gauge theory of the Weyl group. The previously discovered (vectorial) torsion/non-metricity equivalence is shown to be built-in as it corresponds to a redefinition of the generators of the Weyl group. We present a generalisation of the torsion/non-metricity duality which includes, aside from the vector, also a traceless 3-tensor with two antisymmetric indices and vanishing skew symmetric part. A discussion of this relation in the case of minimally coupled matter fields is given. We further point out that a Rarita-Schwinger field can couple minimally to all the components of torsion and some components of non-metricity. Alongside we present the same gauge construction for the Poincaré and conformal groups. We show that even though the Weyl group is a subgroup of the conformal group, the gauge theory of the latter is actually only a special case of Weyl quadratic gravity.

Weyl formula and thermodynamics of geometric flow

Abstract:We study the Weyl formula for the asymptotic number of eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator with Dirichlet boundary condition on a Riemannian manifold in the context of geometric flows. Assuming the eigenvalues to be the energies of some associated statistical system, we show that geometric flows are directly related with the direction of increasing entropy chosen. For a closed Riemannian manifold we obtain a volume preserving flow of geometry being equivalent to the increment of Gibbs entropy function derived from the spectrum of Laplace-Beltrami operator. Resemblance with Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner (ADM) formalism of gravity is also noted by considering open Riemannian manifolds, directly equating the geometric flow parameter and the direction of increasing entropy as time direction.

Abstract:We calculate suitably localized Hochschild homologies of various quantum groups and Podle\'s spheres after realizing them as generalized Weyl algebras (GWAs). We use the fact that every GWA is birationally equivalent to a smash product with a 1-torus. We also address and solve the birational equivalence problem and the birational smoothness problem for GWAs.
The Decoupled Haydys-Witten Equations and a Weitzenböck Formula

Abstract:The Haydys-Witten equations are partial differential equations on five-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that are equipped with a non-vanishing vector field $v$. Conjecturally, their solutions determine the Floer differential in a gauge-theoretic approach to Khovanov homology. This article introduces a certain decoupled version of the Haydys-Witten equations, a specialization of the Haydys-Witten equations that exhibits a Hermitian Yang-Mills structure. These equations exist whenever the vector bundle defined by the orthogonal complement of $v$ admits an almost Hermitian structure. We investigate the relation between the full Haydys-Witten equations and their decoupled version on manifolds with poly-cylindrical ends and boundaries, and find conditions under which the Haydys-Witten equations reduce to the decoupled equations. This relies on a Weitzenböck-like formula that shows that the difference between the full Haydys-Witten equations and the decoupled equations is governed by the asymptotic behaviour of solutions near boundaries and non-compact ends. Regarding the analysis near boundaries, we provide a detailed analysis of the polyhomogeneous expansion of Haydys-Witten solutions with twisted Nahm pole boundary conditions, generalizing work of Siqi He in the untwisted case. The corresponding analysis at non-compact ends relies on a vanishing theorem by Nagy-Oliveira that was recently generalized by the author.

Abstract:We consider the thermodynamic properties of an exact black hole solution obtained in Weyl geometric gravity theory, by considering the simplest conformally invariant action, constructed from the square of the Weyl scalar, and the strength of the Weyl vector only. The action is linearized in the Weyl scalar by introducing an auxiliary scalar field, and thus it can be reformulated as a scalar-vector-tensor theory in a Riemann space, in the presence of a nonminimal coupling between the Ricci scalar and the scalar field. In static spherical symmetry, this theory admits an exact black hole solution, which generalizes the standard Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution through the presence of two new terms in the metric, having a linear and a quadratic dependence on the radial coordinate, respectively. The solution is obtained by assuming that the Weyl vector has only a radial component. After studying the locations of the event and cosmological horizons of the Weyl geometric black hole, we investigate in detail the thermodynamical (quantum properties) of this type of black holes, by considering the Hawking temperature, the entropy, specific heat and the Helmholtz free energy functions on both the event and the cosmological horizons. The Weyl geometric black holes have thermodynamic properties that clearly differentiate them from similar solutions of other modified gravity theories. The obtained results may lead to the possibility of a better understanding of the properties of the black holes in alternative gravity, and of the relevance of the thermodynamic aspects in black hole physics.

The technique of integration within a Weyl ordered product of operators is employed to prove our statement. Application of this property in obtaining generalized squeezed state via similar transformation is discussed.

Abstract:Given a simple, simply connected, complex algebraic group G , a flat projective connection on the bundle of non-abelian theta functions on the moduli space of semistable parabolic G -bundles over any family of smooth projective curves with marked points was constructed by the authors in an earlier paper. Here, it is shown that the identification between the bundle of non-abelian theta functions and the bundle of WZW conformal blocks is flat with respect to this connection and the one constructed by Tsuchiya–Ueno–Yamada. As an application, we give a geometric construction of the Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov connection on the trivial bundle over the configuration space of points in the projective line whose typical fiber is the space of invariants of tensor product of representations.

Abstract:We formulate gauge theories on noncompact Lorentzian manifolds. For definiteness we choose an SO(1,4) gauge theory -- the isometry group of the five dimensional Minkowski space. We make use of the natural inner product to construct the Yang-Mills gauge action on four dimensional spacetime, on which the natural tetrad and metric are induced, thus breaking the symmetry to that of general relativity. In the low energy limit -- if a suitable gauge field condensate develops -- the theory reduces to the Cartan-Einstein gravity, which harbors nondynamical torsion, and is consistent with all observations. We also discuss how to couple our gauge theory of gravity to scalar and vector matter. The Hamiltonian analysis shows that the theory possesses no Ostrogradsky instabilities, however it harbors a kinetic instability. We conjecture that such a kinetic instability can be removed either by generalizing the theory to the nonlinear Born-Infeld theory, or by constraining the kinetic instability. This work is an attempt to formulate gravity as a unitary, renormalizable gauge theory without instabilities, in which the fundamental propagating degrees of freedom are in the spin-one tetrad connection.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a smooth closed orientable surface. A Gaussian thermostat on $M$ can be seen as the geodesic flow of a certain metric connection with torsion. These flows may not preserve any smooth volume form. We prove that if two Gaussian thermostats on $M$ with negative thermostat curvature are related by a smooth orbit equivalence isotopic to the identity, then the two background metrics are conformally equivalent via a smooth diffeomorphism of $M$ isotopic to the identity. We also give a relationship between the thermostat forms themselves. Finally, we prove the same result for Anosov magnetic flows.
