Abstract:For any crystallographic root system, let $W$ be the associated Weyl group, and let $\mathit{WP}$ be the weight polytope (also known as the $W$-permutohedron) associated with an arbitrary strongly dominant weight. The action of $W$ on $\mathit{WP}$ induces an action on the toric variety $X(\mathit{WP})$ associated with the normal fan of $\mathit{WP}$, and hence an action on the rational cohomology ring $H^*\left(X(\mathit{WP})\right)$. Let $P$ be the corresponding dominant weight polytope, which is a fundamental region of the $W$-action on $\mathit{WP}$. We give a type uniform algebraic proof that the fixed subring $H^*\left(X(\mathit{WP})\right)^{W}$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring $H^*\left(X(P)\right)$ of the toric variety $X(P)$ associated with the normal fan of $P$. Notably, our proof applies to all finite (not necessarily crystallographic) Coxeter groups, answering a question of Horiguchi--Masuda--Shareshian--Song about non-crystallographic root systems.

Abstract:We consider compact conformal manifolds $(M,[g])$ endowed with a closed Weyl structure $\nabla$, i.e. a torsion-free connection preserving the conformal structure, which is locally but not globally the Levi-Civita connection of a metric in $[g]$. Our aim is to classify all such structures when both $\nabla$ and $\nabla^g$, the Levi-Civita connection of $g$, have special holonomy. In such a setting, $(M,[g],\nabla)$ is either flat, or irreducible, or carries a locally conformally product (LCP) structure. Since the flat case is already completely classified, we focus on the last two cases. When $\nabla$ has irreducible holonomy we prove that $(M,g)$ is either Vaisman, or a mapping torus of an isometry of a compact nearly Kähler or nearly parallel $\mathrm{G}_2$ manifold, while in the LCP case we prove that $g$ is neither Kähler nor Einstein, thus reducible by the Berger-Simons Theorem, and we obtain the local classification of such structures in terms of adapted metrics.

Abstract:Given a simple connected compact Lie group $K$ and a maximal torus $T$ of $K$, the Weyl group $W=N_K(T)/T$ naturally acts on $T$. First, we use the combinatorics of the (extended) affine Weyl group to provide an explicit $W$-equivariant triangulation of $T$. We describe the associated $W$-dg-ring. For a non-crystallographic Coxeter group, using compact hyperbolic extensions rather than affine ones, we construct a compact $W$-manifold $\mathbf{T}(W)$, which is an analogue of a torus for $W$. We exhibit a $W$-equivariant triangulation of $\mathbf{T}(W)$ and compute the associated $W$-dg-ring. Also, we derive its homology representation.

Action of Weyl group on equivariant K-theory of flag varieties

Abstract:We describe the action of the Weyl group of a semi simple linear group $G$ on cohomological and K-theoretic invariants of the generalized flag variety $G/B$. We study the automorphism $s_i$, induced by the reflection in the simple root, on the equivariant $K$-theory ring $K_T(G/B)$ using divided difference operators. Using the localization theorem for torus action and Borel presentation for the equivariant K-theory ring, we calculate the formula for this automorphism. Moreover, we expand this formula in the basis consisting of structure sheaves classes of Schubert varieties. We provide effective formula (applying properties of Weyl groups) for the approximation of this expansion, more specifically for the part corresponding to Schubert varieties with the fixed dimension, which in the case of $G$ being a special linear group is more exact. Finally, we discuss the above-mentioned formula in the basis of motivic Chern classes of Schubert varieties.

Weyl Calculus on Graded Groups

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish a pseudo-differential Weyl calculus on graded nilpotent Lie groups $G$ which extends the celebrated Weyl calculus on $\mathbb{R}^n$. To reach this goal, we develop a symbolic calculus for a very general class of quantization schemes, following [Doc. Math., 22, 1539--1592, 2017], using the Hörmander symbol classes $S^m_{\rho, \delta}(G)$ introduced in [Progress in Mathematics, 314. Birkhäuser/Springer, 2016]. We particularly focus on the so-called symmetric calculi, for which quantizing and taking the adjoint commute, among them the Euclidean Weyl calculus, but we also recover the (non-symmetric) Kohn-Nirenberg calculus, on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and on general graded groups [Progress in Mathematics, 314. Birkhäuser/Springer, 2016]. Several interesting applications follow directly from our calculus: expected mapping properties on Sobolev spaces, the existence of one-sided parametrices and the Gårding inequality for elliptic operators, and a generalization of the Poisson bracket for symmetric quantizations on stratified groups. In the particular case of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_n$, we are able to answer the fundamental questions of this paper: which, among all the admissible quantizations, is the natural Weyl quantization on $\mathbb{H}_n$? And which are the criteria that determine it uniquely? The surprisingly simple but compelling answers raise the question whether what is true for $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{H}_n$ also extends to general graded groups, which we answer in the affirmative in this paper. Among other things, we discuss and investigate an analogue of the symplectic invariance property of the Weyl quantization in the setting of graded groups, as well as the notion of the Poisson bracket for symbols in the setting of stratified groups, linking it to the symbolic properties of the commutators.

Abstract:We consider the fine grading of $sl(n,\mb C)$ induced by tensor product of generalized Pauli matrices in the paper. Based on the classification of maximal diagonalizable subgroups of $PGL(n,\mb C)$ by Havlicek, Patera and Pelantova, we prove that any finite maximal diagonalizable subgroup $K$ of $PGL(n,\mb C)$ is a symplectic abelian group and its Weyl group, which describes the symmetry of the fine grading induced by the action of $K$, is just the isometry group of the symplectic abelian group $K$. For a finite symplectic abelian group, it is also proved that its isometry group is always generated by the transvections contained in it.

Abstract:We consider the fine grading of sl(n, C) induced by tensor product of generalized Pauli matrices in the paper. Regard PGL(n, C) as the inner automorphism group of sl(n, C). Abstract:Given a polynomial P of partial derivatives of the Kahler metric, expressed as a linear combination of directed multigraphs, we prove a simple criterion in terms of the coefficients for P to be an invariant polynomial, i.e. invariant under the transformation of coordinates. As applications, we prove an explicit composition formula for covariant differential operators under a canonical basis, also known as invariant differential operators in the case of bounded symmetric domains. We also prove a general explicit formula of star products on Kahler manifolds.
Weyl cohomology and the conformal anomaly in the presence of torsion

Abstract:Using cohomological methods, we identify both trivial and nontrivial contributions to the conformal anomaly in the presence of vectorial torsion in $d=2,4$ dimensions. In both cases, our analysis considers two scenarios: one in which the torsion vector transforms in an affine way, i.e., it is a gauge potential for Weyl transformations, and the other in which it is invariant under the Weyl group. An important outcome for the former case in both $d=2,4$ is the presence of anomalies of a "mixed" nature in relation to the classification of Deser and Schwimmer. For invariant torsion in $d=4$, we also find a new type of anomaly which we dub $\Psi$-anomaly. Taking these results into account, we integrate the different anomalies to obtain renormalized anomalous effective actions. Thereafter, we recast such actions in the covariant nonlocal and local forms, the latter being easier to work with. Along the way, we pause to comment on the physical usefulness of these effective actions, in particular to obtain renormalized energy-momentum tensors and thermodynamics of $2d$ black holes.

Substructures of the Weyl group and their physical applications

Abstract:We study substructures of the Weyl group of conformal transformations of the metric of (pseudo)Riemannian manifolds. These substructures are identified by differential constraints on the conformal factors of the transformations which are chosen such that their composition is associative. Mathematically, apart from rare exceptions, they are partial associative groupoids, not groups, so they do not have an algebra of infinitesimal transformations, but this limitation can be partially circumvented using some of their properties cleverly. We classify and discuss the substructures with two-derivatives differential constraints, the most famous of which being known as the harmonic or restricted Weyl group in the physics literature, but we also show the existence of a lightcone constraint which realizes a proper subgroup of the Weyl group. We then show the physical implications that come from invariance under the two most important substructures, concentrating on classical properties of the energy-momentum tensor and a generalization of the quantum trace anomaly. We also elaborate further on the harmonic substructure, which can be interpreted as partial gauge fixing of full Weyl invariance using BRST methods. Finally, we discuss how to construct differential constraints of arbitrary higher-derivative order and present, as examples, generalizations involving scalar constraints with four and six derivatives.

Abstract:For every simple Hermitian Lie group $G$, we consider a certain maximal parabolic subgroup whose unipotent radical $N$ is either abelian (if $G$ is of tube type) or two-step nilpotent (if $G$ is of non-tube type). By the generalized Whittaker Plancherel formula we mean the Plancherel decomposition of $L^2(G/N,\omega)$, the space of square-integrable sections of the homogeneous vector bundle over $G/N$ associated with an irreducible unitary representation $\omega$ of $N$. Assuming that the central character of $\omega$ is contained in a certain cone, we construct embeddings of all holomorphic discrete series representations of $G$ into $L^2(G/N,\omega)$ and show that the multiplicities are equal to the dimensions of the lowest $K$-types.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a Dynkin diagram and let $\Pi=\{\alpha_1,\dots ,\alpha_{\ell}\}$ be the simple roots of the corresponding Kac--Moody root system. Let $\mathfrak{h}$ denote the Cartan subalgebra, let $W$ denote the Weyl group and let $\Delta$ denote the set of all roots. The action of $W$ on $\mathfrak{h}$, and hence on $\Delta$, is the discretization of the action of the Kac--Moody algebra. Understanding the orbit structure of $W$ on $\Delta$ is crucial for many physical applications. We show that for $i\neq j$, the simple roots $\alpha_i$ and $\alpha_j$ are in the same $W$--orbit if and only if vertices $i$ and $j$ in the Dynkin diagram corresponding to $\alpha_i$ and $\alpha_j$ are connected by a path consisting only of single edges. We introduce the notion of `the Cayley graph $\mathcal{P}$ of the Weyl group action on real roots' whose connected components are in one-to-one correspondence with the disjoint orbits of $W$. For a symmetric hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrix $A$ of rank $\geq 4$ we prove that any 2 real roots of the same length lie in the same $W$--orbit. We show that if the generalized Cartan matrix $A$ contains zeros, then there are simple roots that are stabilized by simple root reflections in $W$, that is, $W$ does not act simply transitively on real roots. We give sufficient conditions in terms of the generalized Cartan matrix $A$ (equivalently ${\mathcal D}$) for $W$ to stabilize a real root. Using symmetry properties of the imaginary light cone in the hyperbolic case, we deduce that the number of $W$--orbits on imaginary roots on a hyperboloid of fixed radius is bounded above by the number of root lattice points on the hyperboloid that intersect the closure of the fundamental region for $W$.

Fundamental polytope for the Weyl group acting on a maximal torus of a compact Lie group

Abstract:We provide a fundamental domain for the action of the finite Weyl group on a maximal torus of a compact Lie group of the corresponding type. The general situation is reduced to the adjoint case and, from the perspective of root data, this problem can be rephrased by asking for a fundamental polytope for the action of the extended affine Weyl group on the (dual) toral subalgebra. We solve the problem in this second form. Using the theory of minuscule weights, we obtain a description of this fundamental polytope as a convex hull of explicit vertices, and as an intersection of closed half-spaces. The latter description was first obtained by Komrakov and Premet in 1984 but, as the present work is independent of that of Komrakov-Premet, we give a new self-contained proof of it. We also derive some consequences on the structure of automorphism groups of extended Dynkin diagrams.

Abstract:We present a complete algebraic classification for the curvature tensor in Weyl-Cartan geometry, by applying methods of eigenvalues and principal null directions on its irreducible decomposition under the group of global Lorentz transformations, thus providing a full invariant characterisation of all the possible algebraic types of the torsion and nonmetricity field strength tensors in Weyl-Cartan space-times. As an application, we show that in the framework of Metric-Affine Gravity the field strength tensors of a dynamical torsion field cannot be doubly aligned with the principal null directions of the Riemannian Weyl tensor in scalar-flat, slowly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric space-times.
