Abstract:Recently, solution-processed organic solar cells combining small-molecule donor and nonfullerene acceptor have achieved breakthrough results with the certified efficiency over 15%. These impressive progresses are driven by the concerted efforts of modifying the donor and acceptor materials and optimizing the morphology. Considering the defined chemical structures and easily tuned properties of small-molecule materials, it is of great necessity and importance to pay more attentions on the topic of all-small molecule organic solar cells. Here, we summarize the recent progress of all-small molecule organic solar cells from the prospect of materials' evolutions and expect to provide some hints for its future developments. The involved small-molecule donors including oligothiophene-, benzodithiophene-, naphthodithiophene-, and porphyrin-based materials are discussed to illustrate the relationship of chemical structures, properties, and device performance. Then, the small-molecule nonfullerene acceptors in all-small molecules organic solar cells are discussed to highlight their vital role. Finally, we will present the challenges and future of this research area.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) attract significant attention due to their great potential in flexible, lightweight, and low‐cost photovoltaic technology. Given the reformation of non‐fullerene acceptors, the certificated power conversion efficiency (PCE) of single‐junction OSCs has developed rapidly over 19% in the small device size (<1 cm2). However, the PCEs of large‐area OSCs are significantly lower than that of small‐area devices. Several essential issues in upscaling OSCs from small‐area to large‐area need to be overcome to bridge the efficiency gap, including coating techniques, material requirements, morphology optimization, flexible transparent electrodes development, and devices stability research. Herein, recent progress and challenges in materials and processing technologies of large‐area OSCs are summarized. Based on the analysis, strategies and opportunities are proposed to promote the development of large‐area efficient OSCs toward mass production. A comprehensive overview of the latest research progress of the high‐performance large‐area organic solar cells (OSCs), including coating techniques, material requirements, morphology optimization, flexible transparent electrodes, and device stability, is provided. Finally, an outlook and perspectives are provided for the future development of large‐area OSCs with respect to industrial‐scale production and application.

Abstract:Abstract Two major challenges need to be overcome to bridge the efficiency gap between small-area rigid organic solar cells (OSCs) and large-area flexible devices: the first challenge lies in preparing high-quality flexible transparent electrodes with low resistance, high transparency, smooth surface, and superior mechanical properties. Second, the scalable fabrication of thickness-insensitive photoactive layers with low-cost materials is also an essential task. In this review, recent progress and challenges of flexible large-area OSCs are summarized and analyzed. Based on our analysis, strategies and opportunities are proposed to promote the development of stable and efficient flexible large-area OSCs.

Abstract:High-performance non-fullerene OSCs with PCEs of up to ca. 6.0% are demonstrated based on PBDTT-F-TT polymer and a molecular di-PBI acceptor through comprehensive molecular, interfacial, and device engineering. Impressive PCEs can also be retained in devices with relatively thick BHJ layer and processed through non-halogenated solvents, indicating these high-performance non-fullerene OSCs are promising for large-area printing applications.

Abstract:The challenge of continuous printing in high‐efficiency large‐area organic solar cells is a key limiting factor for their widespread adoption. A materials design concept for achieving large‐area, solution‐coated all‐polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells with stable phase separation morphology between the donor and acceptor is presented. The key concept lies in inhibiting strong crystallization of donor and acceptor polymers, thus forming intermixed, low crystallinity, and mostly amorphous blends. Based on experiments using donors and acceptors with different degree of crystallinity, the results show that microphase separated donor and acceptor domain sizes are inversely proportional to the crystallinity of the conjugated polymers. This methodology of using low crystallinity donors and acceptors has the added benefit of forming a consistent and robust morphology that is insensitive to different processing conditions, allowing one to easily scale up the printing process from a small‐scale solution shearing coater to a large‐scale continuous roll‐to‐roll (R2R) printer. Large‐area all‐polymer solar cells are continuously roll‐to‐roll slot die printed with power conversion efficiencies of 5%, with combined cell area up to 10 cm2. This is among the highest efficiencies realized with R2R‐coated active layer organic materials on flexible substrate.

Abstract:Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) processing technology has had an irreplaceable role in the development of organic solar cells (OSCs) in the past decades due to the significant advantages in achieving high‐power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the difficulty in exploring and regulating morphology makes it inadequate for upscaling large‐area OSCs. In this work, printable high‐performance ternary devices are fabricated by a pseudo‐planar heterojunction (PPHJ) strategy. The fullerene derivative indene‐C60 bisadduct (ICBA) is incorporated into PM6/IT‐4F system to expand the vertical phase separation and facilitate an obvious PPHJ structure. After the addition of ICBA, the IT‐4F enriches on the surface of active layer, while PM6 is accumulated underneath. Furthermore, it increases the crystallinity of PM6, which facilitates exciton dissociation and charge transfer. Accordingly, 1.05 cm2 devices are fabricated by blade‐coating with an enhanced PCE of 14.25% as compared to the BHJ devices (13.73%). The ternary PPHJ strategy provides an effective way to optimize the vertical phase separation of organic semiconductor during scalable printing methods.

Abstract:Considering the terawatt global demand for energy, studies on renewable energy resources are regarded as one of the most important issues. Among the available renewable energy resources, solar energy is a strong candidate because of its abundance and clean nature. Traditional solar cells are typically not cost effective for large-scale implementation given the high processing costs. Solution-processible solar cells have been of great interest among researchers over the past few decades in an effort to lower the costs of solar technologies because they are more affordable than conventional solar technologies. In this review, we provide an overview of the major solution-processible thin-film solar cell technologies by focusing on three representative fields: polymeric organic, inorganic chalcogenide, and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells. This review describes the historical development, material properties, device structures, and highest performance of each technology under a single-junction configuration. In addition, the challenges of each technology and the future outlook are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskite photovoltaic (PV) cells have achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) comparable to the leading crystalline silicon (c‐Si) PV technology. However, despite their exceptional performance, these perovskite solar cells (PSCs) face technological challenges such as large‐area fabrication complexities and outdoor stability concerns. These challenges need to be addressed to pave the way for the commercialization of PSCs. The key to commercializing PSCs lies in developing stable, large‐area solar modules that offer both high efficiency and reliability. Overcoming the hurdles of large‐area module design and fabrication is a crucial step, and researchers are exploring innovative solutions to tackle these challenges. This review article primarily focuses on the development of large‐area PSCs, recent advancements in this field, and the obstacles related to scaling up this technology. It delves into the techniques used to fabricate perovskite films, with a special emphasis on large‐area and large‐scale PSC manufacturing methods. Moreover, the review highlights stability concerns that perovskite solar modules (PSMs) face and reports on recent progress in addressing these issues. The article concludes by summarizing potential future research directions aimed at realizing the full commercial potential of this innovative and promising solar cell technology. Abstract:This paper takes the emergence of ADA'DA‐type NFAs as a clue to review the development of organic photovoltaic materials, interface materials, and device fabrication technology in recent years. Finally, it is believed that the commercialization of organic photovoltaics still needs to develop novel materials to meet the demand for highly stable, pollution‐free, large‐area, and low‐cost fabrication. With the emergence of ADA'DA‐type (Y‐series) non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs), the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic photovoltaic devices have been constantly refreshed and gradually reached 20% in recent years (19% for single junction and 20% for tandem device). The acceptors possess specific design concept, which greatly enrich the NFA types and have excellent compatibility with many donor materials. It is gratifying to note that the previously underperforming donor materials combine with these regulated acceptors to shine again. Nowadays, the concept of modular design is widely used in the research of acceptors and donors, injecting new vitality into the field of organic photovoltaics. Furthermore, these acceptors also promote the research of multicomponent devices, tandem devices, bilayer devices, processing solvent engineering, and additive engineering. Herein, the latest progresses of polymer solar cells with efficiency over 17% are briefly reviewed from the aspects of active material design, interface material development, and device technology. At last, the opportunities and challenges of organic photovoltaic commercialization in the future are discussed.

Abstract:In the last few decades, organic solar cells (OSCs) have drawn broad interest owing to their advantages such as being low cost, flexible, semitransparent, non-toxic, and ideal for roll-to-roll large-scale processing. Significant advances have been made in the field of OSCs containing high-performance active layer materials, electrodes, and interlayers, as well as novel device structures. Particularly, the innovation of active layer materials, including novel acceptors and donors, has contributed significantly to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement in OSCs. In this review, high-performance acceptors, containing fullerene derivatives, small molecular, and polymeric non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, highly efficient donor materials designed for fullerene- and NFA-based OSCs are also presented. Additionally, motivated by the incessant developments of donor and acceptor materials, recent advances in the field of ternary and tandem OSCs are reviewed as well.

Abstract:Over the past three years, a particularly exciting and active area of research within the field of organic photovoltaics has been the use of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Compared with fullerene acceptors, NFAs possess significant advantages including tunability of bandgaps, energy levels, planarity and crystallinity. To date, NFA solar cells have not only achieved impressive power conversion efficiencies of ~13–14%, but have also shown excellent stability compared with traditional fullerene acceptor solar cells. This Review highlights recent progress on single-junction and tandem NFA solar cells and research directions to achieve even higher efficiencies of 15–20% using NFA-based organic photovoltaics are also proposed.

Abstract:Abstract In non-fullerene organic solar cells, the long-range structure ordering induced by end-group π–π stacking of fused-ring non-fullerene acceptors is considered as the critical factor in realizing efficient charge transport and high power conversion efficiency. Here, we demonstrate that side-chain engineering of non-fullerene acceptors could drive the fused-ring backbone assembly from a π–π stacking mode to an intermixed packing mode, and to a non-stacking mode to refine its solid-state properties. Different from the above-mentioned understanding, we find that close atom contacts in a non-stacking mode can form efficient charge transport pathway through close side atom interactions. The intermixed solid-state packing motif in active layers could enable organic solar cells with superior efficiency and reduced non-radiative recombination loss compared with devices based on molecules with the classic end-group π–π stacking mode. Our observations open a new avenue in material design that endows better photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Although fullerenes and their derivatives, such as PCBM, have been the dominant electron-acceptor materials in organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), they suffer from some disadvantages, such as weak absorption in the visible spectral region, limited spectral breadth and difficulty in variably tuning the band gap. It is necessary to explore non-fullerene electron acceptors that will not only retain the favorable electron-accepting and transporting properties of fullerenes but also overcome their insufficiencies. After a decade of mediocrity, non-fullerene acceptors are undergoing rapid development and are emerging as a hot area of focus in the field of organic semiconductors. Solution-processed bulk heterojunction (BHJ) OPVs based on non-fullerene acceptors have shown encouraging power conversion efficiencies of over 4%. This article reviews recent developments in several classes of solution-processable non-fullerene acceptors for BHJ OPVs. The remaining problems and challenges along with the key research directions in the near future are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the rapid progress of organic solar cells based on non-fullerene acceptors, simultaneously achieving high power conversion efficiency and long-term stability for commercialization requires sustainable research effort. Here, we demonstrate stable devices by integrating a wide bandgap electron-donating polymer (namely PTzBI-dF) and two acceptors (namely L8BO and Y6) that feature similar structures yet different thermal and morphological properties. The organic solar cell based on PTzBI-dF:L8BO:Y6 could achieve a promising efficiency of 18.26% in the conventional device structure. In the inverted structure, excellent long-term thermal stability over 1400 h under 85 °C continuous heating is obtained. The improved performance can be ascribed to suppressed charge recombination along with appropriate charge transport. We find that the morphological features in terms of crystalline coherence length of fresh and aged films can be gradually regulated by the weight ratio of L8BO:Y6. Additionally, the occurrence of melting point decrease and reduced enthalpy in PTzBI-dF:L8BO:Y6 films could prohibit the amorphous phase to cluster, and consequently overcome the energetic traps accumulation aroused by thermal stress, which is a critical issue in high efficiency non-fullerene acceptors-based devices. This work provides insight into understanding non-fullerene acceptors-based organic solar cells for improved efficiency and stability.
