Abstract:This chapter analyzes the main kinetic features of biomass pyrolysis and devolatilization. To this goal, the biomass is characterized first, and successively the release of the species and char formation is described. Biomass is considered as a mixture of reference constituents: cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Devolatilization of biomasses is a complex process in which several chemical reactions take place in both the gas and the condensed phases alongside the mass and thermal resistances involved in the pyrolysis process. A novel computational characterization of the released species is applied in the proposed devolatilization models, which attempts to characterize pyrolysis reactions with a lumped stoichiometry using a limited number of equivalent components to describe not only gaseous products but also tar species. The proposed model is also adopted to analyze the optimal operating conditions for fast biomass pyrolysis. The operating conditions required to maximize the yield of liquid products are investigated and discussed. Crucial issues are the fast and complete heating of biomass particles to reduce char formation and the rapid cooling of released products to reduce the role of secondary gas-phase pyrolysis reactions.

Abstract:Kinetic knowledge is of great importance in achieving good control of the pyrolysis and gasification process and optimising system design. An overall kinetic pyrolysis scheme is therefore addressed here. The kinetic modelling incorporates the following basic steps: the degradation of the virgin biomass materials into primary products (tar, gas and semi-char), the decomposition of primary tar into secondary products and the continuous interaction between primary gas and char. The last step is disregarded completely by models in the literature. Analysis and comparison of predicted results from different kinetic schemes and experimental data on our fixed bed pyrolyser yielded very positive evidence to support our kinetic scheme.

Abstract:Today, energy use is an important and urgent issue for economic development worldwide. It is expected that raw material in the form of biomass and lignocellulosic residues will become increasingly significant sources of sustainable energy in the future because they contain components such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractables with high energy-producing potential. It is then essential to determine the behavior of these materials during thermal degradation processes, such as pyrolysis (total or partial absence of air/oxygen). Pyrolyzed biomass and its residual fractions can be processed to produce important chemical products, such as hydrogen gas (H2). Thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis and its derivative, DTG, are analytical techniques used to determine weight loss as a function of temperature or time and associate changes with certain degradation and mass conversion processes in order to evaluate kinetic properties. Applying kinetic methods (mathematical models) to degradation processes permits obtaining several useful parameters for predicting the behavior of biomass during pyrolysis. Current differential (Friedman) and integral (Flynn–Wall–Ozawa, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose, Starink, Popescu) models vary in their range of heating speeds (β) and degree of advance (α), but some (e.g., Kissinger's) do not consider the behavior of α. This article analyzes the results of numerous kinetic studies using pyrolysis and based on thermogravimetric processes involving over 20 distinct biomasses. The main goal of those studies was to generate products with high added value, such as bio-char, methane, hydrogen, and biodiesel. This broad review identifies models and determines the potential of lignocellulosic materials for generating bioenergy cleanly and sustainably.

Abstract:Biomass pyrolysis is considered as a thermochemical conversion system that is performed under oxygen-depleted conditions. A large body of literature exists in which thermodynamic equilibrium (TE) and kinetic approaches have been applied to predict pyrolysis products. However, the reliability, accuracy and predictive power of both modeling approaches is an area of concern. To address these concerns, in this paper, two new simulation models based on the TE and kinetic approaches are developed using Aspen Plus, to analyze the performance of each approach. Subsequently, the results of two models are compared with modeling and experimental results available in the literature. The comparison shows that, on the one hand, the performance of the TE approach is not satisfactory and cannot be used as an effective way for pyrolysis modeling. On the other hand, the results generated by the new model based on the kinetic approach suggests that this approach is suitable for modeling biomass pyrolysis processes. Calculation of the root mean square error (RMS), to quantify the deviation of the model results from the experiment results, confirms that this kinetic model presents superior agreement with experimental data in comparison with other kinetic models in the literature. The acquired RMS for the developed kinetic method in this paper varies within the span of 1.2 to 3.2 depending on temperature (400–600 °C) and various feedstocks (pine spruce sawdust, bagasse, wood bark, beech wood and paddy straw).

Abstract:The utilization of biomass, the only carbon-bearing renewable energy source, is critical for environmental and energy sustainability as well as carbon neutrality. Pyrolysis is the efficient conversion of biomass to fuel gas, liquid oil, and solid char. It is necessary to understand the mechanism of biomass pyrolysis for valuable and efficient utilization. In this review, recent progress with respect to biomass pyrolysis properties, the pyrolysis process, and product upgrading strategies focusing on carbon-based high-value liquid fuels and carbon-bearing materials are summarized. First, the correlations between the pyrolysis behavior and biomass structure and process conditions are considered. The mechanisms of the biomass pyrolysis of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin as well as the potential effect of inorganic matter on biomass pyrolysis are discussed. Furthermore, the regulation and controlling strategies for the biomass pyrolysis of high-value products are outlined. Finally, the challenges and prospects are discussed in order to provide a comprehensive picture of biomass pyrolysis development, which is significant for the understanding of biomass pyrolysis and the development of biomass utilization technology.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is particularly attractive because it can convert lignocellulosic biomass into bio-oil, gases and solid charcoal in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. Determining the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters is fundamental to elucidate the reaction mechanisms and optimize biomass pyrolysis processes. The applicability and accuracy of kinetic and thermodynamic methods are systematically studied by analyzing theoretically simulated processes which simulate biomass pyrolysis processes and using statistical analyses. In terms of activation energy calculation, the Friedman method is capable of providing accurate activation energies, whereas the KAS and FWO isoconversional methods lead to some systematic errors in the resultant activation energies. The accuracy of the Kissinger method for estimating the frequency factor is dependent on the variation degree of kinetic parameters with conversion. The conventional method for determining thermodynamic parameters is based on the conversion rate peak temperature, which has no theoretical basis. Therefore, the concept of effective thermodynamic parameters is proposed, which are dependent on conversion and heating rate. And the thermodynamic analysis of the simulated processes is comprehensively investigated. Results revealed that the accuracy of the resulting thermodynamic parameters from the conventional method is dependent on the variation degree of kinetic parameters with conversion. It is expected that this study will provide an analysis framework and methodological guideline for the kinetic and thermodynamic analyses of biomass pyrolysis.

Abstract:Aiming at promoting the industrial application of biomass pyrolysis technology, many approaches have been explored to reveal pyrolysis reaction mechanism. Among which the thermal analysis kinetics based on mechanism scheme receives significant attention. The kinetic models developed in past decades are classified into five types: one-step global model based on model-fitting method, global model based on model-free method, multi-step successive model, semi-global model and distributed activation energy model. In this review, the computation processes are introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages of these kinetic models are discussed and compared in detail. To obtain a universal kinetic model and simplify the intricate behaviors of biomass pyrolysis, the pyrolytic kinetics of the three major components, namely cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, have been studied individually. Their pyrolysis behaviors are dramatically different in view of kinetics. It is recommended that the fundamental theory progress which has been made in the solid reaction kinetics should be applied in the biomass pyrolysis kinetics, and a lot of related traditional knowledge in this area needs to be updated urgently.

Abstract:This work presents a comprehensive model for lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis, addressing kinetics, energy balances, and gas product composition with the aim of its application in wood combustion. The model consists of a two-stage global mechanism in which biomass initially reacts into tar, char, and light gases (non-condensable gases), which is followed by tar reacting into light gases and char. Experimental data from the literature are employed for determining Arrhenius kinetic parameters and key energy parameters, like tar and char heating values and the specific enthalpy of primary and secondary reactions. A methodology is introduced to derive correlations, allowing the model's application to diverse biomass types. This work introduces several novel approaches. Firstly, a pyrolysis model that determines the composition of light gases by solving mass, species, and energy balances is developed, limiting the use of correlations from the literature only for tar and char elemental composition. The mass rate of light gases, tar, and char being produced is also determined. Secondly, kinetic parameters for primary and secondary reactions are determined following a Shafizadeh and Chin scheme but with a modified Arrhenius form dependent on Tn, significantly enhancing the accuracy of product composition prediction. Additionally, correlations for the enthalpies of reactions, both primary and secondary, are determined as a function of pyrolysis temperature. Primary reactions exhibit an overall endothermic behavior, while secondary reactions exhibit an overall exothermic behavior. Finally, the model is validated using cases reported in the literature, and results for light gases composition are presented.

Abstract:In this work about pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, the individual reaction mechanisms of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin are initially described. The recent advances in the understanding of the fundamental reaction pathways are described, including quantum-mechanical calculations, and the description of pyrolysis as a two-step process, i.e., primary pyrolysis and secondary charring, the effect of the presence of an intermediate liquid compound, and the influence of inorganic species are discussed.The need to describe biomass pyrolysis as the sum of the contributions of its individual components is then emphasised. The process of determining biomass mass loss kinetics is analysed, and the product composition and heat of reaction that are experimentally obtained during pyrolysis are presented, along with detailed schemes that can be used to predict them.Finally, it is demonstrated that a multi-scale consideration of pyrolysis on multiple levels – specifically, on molecular, particle and reaction levels – is required to accurately describe biomass pyrolysis. Intra-particle phenomena and particle models are discussed and the reactor level is analysed with a focus placed on fixed bed and fluidised bed pyrolysis. In summary, a list of 10 research focal points that will be important in the future is presented.

Abstract:A mathematical model of wood pyrolysis is presented that is in satisfactory agreement with experimental reaction product distributions over a range of conditions of practical importance for gasification and combustion. Both chemical and physical processes are described, using fundamental principles. Inclusion of water release, tar cracking and char deposition chemical reactions results in predictions of ultimate product distributions (gas, tar and char yields) that are in good agreement with experiment and can aid in optimization of processes to maximize or minimize tar production. Predictions of the rate at which products are instantaneously released from a single wood pellet are also in agreement with experiment. This capability is important for combustion modelling and gasifier simulation. The study provides both extensive data and a fundamental modelling approach that will enhance understanding of the effects of physical properties and processes on the chemistry of devolatilizing biomass. The work emphasizes the need for information both on char deposition rates during carbonization of a range of fuel types and on char thermal properties over a wide range of temperatures and porosities.

Abstract:Khat stem and coffee husk are commonly available agricultural residues in Ethiopia and pose serious environmental hazards through the eutrophication of water streams and greenhouse gas emissions. To alleviate these impacts, thermochemical conversion of these residues through fast pyrolysis can be employed. The samples are characterized for their composition, experimental investigation has been carried out using thermogravimetric analysis at different heating rates (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 °C/min) in the temperature range 30–800 °C under an inert atmosphere to scrutinize the decomposition characteristics. Estimation of pyrolysis kinetic parameters for these materials, which are not widely available in the literature, has been done using different model-free approaches: Kissinger, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa, and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose. Empirical models were developed and employed for comparison of experimental data and error analysis. Validation of experimental data has been done and evolved pyrolysis product yields are predicted using the CRECK-S-B model. The effect of biomass characterization parameters and heating rate are examined. From the results, it is possible to perceive that the Kissinger, single first order, and 4-component models can predict with good accuracy but can not predict the residual char evolution that occurs at higher temperatures (> 450 °C) and the derivative of thermogravimetric shoulders, correspondent to the hemicellulose decomposition. The CRECK-S-B model revealed good agreement with the experimental data for both samples, while being capable of capturing the hemicellulose shoulder and the residual decomposition of char at higher temperatures. The yields and composition of gas, bio-oil and char fractions are estimated, for which the biomass characterization and heating rates have influenced the distribution of the products. This study reveals the potential of these residues to promote local sustainable economies and also gives a possible solution to the environmental issue caused by their disposal.

Abstract:Thermal conversion of biomass is a rapid, low-cost way to produce a dense liquid product, known as bio-oil, that can be refined to transportation fuels. However, utilization of bio-oil is challenging due to its chemical complexity, acidity, and instability – all results of the intricate nature of biomass. A clear understanding of how biomass properties impact yield and composition of thermal products will provide guidance to optimize both biomass and conditions for thermal conversion. To aid elucidation of these associations, we first describe biomass polymers, including phenolics, polysaccharides, acetyl groups, and inorganic ions, and the chemical interactions among them. We then discuss evidence for three roles (i.e., models) for biomass components in the formation of liquid pyrolysis products: (1) as direct sources, (2) as catalysts, and (3) as indirect factors whereby chemical interactions among components and/or cell wall structural features impact thermal conversion products. We highlight associations that might be utilized to optimize biomass content prior to pyrolysis, though a more detailed characterization is required to understand indirect effects. In combination with high-throughput biomass characterization techniques, this knowledge will enable identification of biomass particularly suited for biofuel production and can also guide genetic engineering of bioenergy crops to improve biomass features.

Abstract:The past decades have seen increasing interest in developing pyrolysis pathways to produce biofuels and bio-based chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass. Pyrolysis is a key stage in other thermochemical conversion processes, such as combustion and gasification. Understanding the reaction mechanisms of biomass pyrolysis will facilitate the process optimization and reactor design of commercial-scale biorefineries. However, the multiscale complexity of the biomass structures and reactions involved in pyrolysis make it challenging to elucidate the mechanism. This article provides a broad review of the state-of-art biomass pyrolysis research. Considering the complexity of the biomass structure, the pyrolysis characteristics of its three major individual components (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) are discussed in detail. Recently developed experimental technologies, such as Py-GC–MS/FID, TG-MS/TG-FTIR, in situ spectroscopy, 2D-PCIS, isotopic labeling method, in situ EPR and PIMS have been employed for biomass pyrolysis research, including online monitoring of the evolution of key intermediate products and the qualitative and quantitative measurement of the pyrolysis products. Based on experimental results, many macroscopic kinetic modeling methods with comprehensive mechanism schemes, such as the distributed activation energy model (DAEM), isoconversional method, detailed lumped kinetic model, kinetic Monte Carlo model, have been developed to simulate the mass loss behavior during biomass pyrolysis and to predict the resulting product distribution. Combined with molecular simulations of the elemental reaction routes, an in-depth understanding of the biomass pyrolysis mechanism may be obtained. Aiming to further improve the quality of pyrolysis products, the effects of various catalytic methods and feedstock pretreatment technologies on the pyrolysis behavior are also reviewed. At last, a brief conclusion for the challenge and perspectives of biomass pyrolysis is provided.
Pyrolysis modeling of biomass: study of reaction yields using a single-particle model

Abstract:Pyrolysis has been essential in the context of renewable energies, offering an innovative approach for biomass and solid waste valorization. Therefore, mathematical models that can represent its phenomena are of fundamental importance in understanding the reaction progression and optimizing the process. In this sense, we sought to analyze the capability of single-particle models in representing the yields of pyrolysis reactions in fluidized beds. To describe the behavior and interaction between the phases, we utilized an Eulerian–Lagrangian CFD modeling approach, solving the continuity, momentum, energy, species, and turbulence equations using OpenFOAM. We adopted the multicomponent and multi-stage model to describe the kinetics of pyrolysis in three different types of biomass. The numerical results obtained for the yields of pyrolysis reactions using the proposed modeling approach showed good agreement with the experimental data reported in the literature. We observed a maximum discrepancy of 3% in the study of pure cellulose reaction, 5.14% in red oak, and 0.56% in sugarcane bagasse. Therefore, we concluded that the single-particle model accurately represents the yields of pyrolysis reactions, making it suitable for estimating yields and conversion rates, providing valuable insights into pyrolysis behavior, and aiding in developing projects and optimization studies.

Abstract:The sustainable utilization of biomass, particularly troublesome waste biomass, has become one of the pathways to meet the urgent demand for providing energy safety and environmental protection. The variety of biomass hinders the design of energy devices and systems, which must be highly efficient and reliable. Along with the technological developments in this field, broad works have been carried out on the mathematical modeling of the processes to support design and optimization for decreasing the environmental impact of energy systems. This paper aims to provide an extensive review of the various approaches proposed in the field of the mathematical modeling of the thermochemical conversion of biomass. The general focus is on pyrolysis and gasification, which are considered among the most beneficial methods for waste biomass utilization. The thermal and flow issues accompanying fuel conversion, with the basic governing equations and closing relationships, are presented with regard to the micro- (single particle) and macro-scale (multi-particle) problems, including different approaches (Eulerian, Lagrangian, and mixed). The data-driven techniques utilizing artificial neural networks and machine learning, gaining increasing interest as complementary to the traditional models, are also presented. The impact of the complexity of the physicochemical processes and the upscaling problem on the variations in the modeling approaches are discussed. The advantages and limitations of the proposed models are indicated. Potential options for further development in this area are outlined. The study shows that efforts towards obtaining reliable predictions of process characteristics while preserving reasonable computational efficiency result in a variety of modeling methods. These contribute to advancing environmentally conscious energy solutions in line with the global sustainability goals.

Abstract:The need to change the existing energy model requires the development of advanced technologies capable of making use of renewable sources in a way that combines high efficiency, improved environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Fast pyrolysis is a novel technology capable of converting lignocellulosic biomass into combustible bio-oil with product yields typically above 70 wt%. This transformation brings about notable economic and technical advantages which affect the storage, transportation, processing and utilization of this energy source. Research and development in the fast pyrolysis of biomass has been absorbing substantial amounts of human and economic resources over the last two decades, resulting in notable advances in various areas including: design and construction of robust and efficient pyrolysis reactors; characterization and upgrading of pyrolysis bio-oils; novel technologies capable of making use of the energy and chemical potential of the bio-oil. On the verge of an upsurge in the commercial exploitation of this technology, this paper provides an updated review of its chemical basis, a description of chemical and fuel characteristics of bio-oils and a critical analysis of upgrading alternatives and potential applications. In addition, field information has been gathered from key players in the fast pyrolysis market regarding alternative reactor configurations and the characteristics of the most representative commercial and demonstration plants operating around the world.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass can be convert to a condensable liquid named bio-oil, a solid product named as char and a mixture of gaseous products comprising CO2, CO, H2, CH4, etc. In recent years, much effort has been made on the investigation of conversion of biomass through pyrolysis. However, commercialisation of the biomass pyrolysis technology is still challenging due to various issues such as the deleterious properties of bio-oil including the low heating value and the high instability at elevated temperatures. To overcome such issues, many processes, reactors and catalysts have been developed for pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis of biomass. A state to the art of pyrolysis or catalytic pyrolysis of biomass need to be summarised to have an overall evaluation of the technologies, in order to provide a useful reference for the further development of pyrolysis technology. This study reviews the various pyrolysis process, especially focus on the effects of essential parameters, the process design, the reactors and the catalysts on the pyrolysis process. In addition, progress in commercialisation of pyrolysis technology was also reviewed and the remaining issues in the process of commercialisation were discussed.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is a versatile technology for exploiting diversified feedstocks to produce a wide range of products, including biochar, bio-oil, and syngas with high potential in diverse applications. The cardinal motivation of pyrolysis research is to productively use diverse biomass to reduce adverse impacts on ecology and enhance process economics. However, complex reactions of pyrolysis pose operational challenges. Thus, the present review targets the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of pyrolysis to enhance the understanding for better process control, improved performance, and product distribution. Pyrolysis mechanisms of the major structural components of biomass, such as cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose, as well as proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, are discussed in detail. Various modeling techniques and tools, viz., mathematical, kinetic, computational fluid dynamic modeling, and machine learning algorithms, have been employed to better understand the pyrolysis mechanisms and product distribution. In addition, the most critical challenges, namely aerosol formation, tar formation and their removal mechanisms, that severely impact the pyrolysis process and products are identified and reported. Thus, the present work critically discusses state-of-art biomass pyrolysis, focusing on the reaction mechanism, modeling, and associated challenges to overcome, given that the pyrolysis products and the process are enhanced.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is an environmentally friendly and efficient method for converting biomass into a wide range of products, including fuels, chemicals, fertilizers, catalysts, and sorption materials. This review confirms that scientific research on biomass pyrolysis has remained strong over the past 10 years. The authors examine the operating conditions of different types of pyrolysis, including slow, intermediate, fast, and flash, highlighting the distinct heating rates for each. Furthermore, biomass pyrolysis reactors are categorized into four groups, pneumatic bed reactors, gravity reactors, stationary bed reactors, and mechanical reactors, with a discussion on each type. The review then focuses on recent advancements in pyrolysis technologies that have improved efficiency, yield, and product quality, which, in turn, support sustainable energy production and effective waste management. The composition and yields of products from the different types of pyrolysis have been also reviewed. Finally, a techno-economic analysis has been conducted for both the pyrolysis of biomass alone and the co-pyrolysis of biomass with other raw materials.
