Abstract:This article investigates the production mechanism of the open-circuit back-electromotive force (back EMF) in fractional-slot concentrated winding permanent magnet (FSCW-PM) machines based on the air-gap field modulation (AFM) theory. The relationship between spatial PM field harmonics and temporal back EMF harmonics is discovered by using a general model, which is suitable for both stator-PM and rotor-PM machines. The analysis results reveal that the FSCW-PM machines produce their open-circuit back EMF on the basis of AFM, which means that each back EMF harmonic is induced not only by a specific single spatial field harmonic but also by several different spatial field harmonics. Furthermore, a general winding factor calculation formula for FSCW-PM machines is derived together with the general calculation formula of all back EMF harmonics. Finally, the analysis is verified numerically by the finite element method and experimentally.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the mechanism analysis of the open - circuit back - electromotive force (back - EMF) generation in the fractional - slot concentrated - winding permanent - magnet motor (FSCW - PM). Specifically, based on the air - gap magnetic field modulation (AFM) theory, the paper explores the relationship between the spatial permanent - magnet magnetic field harmonics and the time - domain back - EMF harmonics, and proposes a general model to explain this relationship. The paper also derives the general winding factor calculation formula for the FSCW - PM motor to further understand the generation mechanism of the back - EMF. ### Main contributions of the paper: 1. **Mechanism analysis**: - The generation mechanism of the open - circuit back - EMF in the FSCW - PM motor is studied. - Based on the AFM theory, the relationship between the spatial permanent - magnet magnetic field harmonics and the time - domain back - EMF harmonics is discovered. 2. **General model**: - A general model is proposed, which is applicable to stator - permanent - magnet (stator - PM) and rotor - permanent - magnet (rotor - PM) motors. - It is revealed that the open - circuit back - EMF in the FSCW - PM motor is caused by air - gap magnetic field modulation, and each back - EMF harmonic is not caused by a single spatial magnetic field harmonic, but by the combined action of multiple different spatial magnetic field harmonics. 3. **Winding factor calculation**: - The general winding factor calculation formula for the FSCW - PM motor is derived, including the distribution factor and the pitch factor. - A systematic method is proposed to evaluate the winding factors of different winding configurations. 4. **Verification**: - The effectiveness of the proposed analysis method is verified by the finite element method (FEA) and experiments. ### Key formulas: - **Permanent - magnet magnetomotive force (MMF)**: \[ F(\theta, t)=\sum_{i = 1}^{\infty}F_i t\cos\left[i p_e(\theta+\omega_{pm}t)+\theta_{Fi0}\right] \] - **Stator relative permeability**: \[ \Lambda_s(\theta, t)=\sum_{j = 0}^{\infty}\Lambda_{sj}t\cos\left[j N_{st}\theta+\theta_{sj0}\right] \] - **Rotor relative permeability**: \[ \Lambda_r(\theta, t)=\sum_{k = 0}^{\infty}\Lambda_{rk}t\cos\left[k N_{rt}(\theta+\omega t)+\theta_{rk0}\right] \] - **Air - gap magnetic flux density**: \[ B_r(\theta, t)=\frac{\mu_0}{g}F(\theta, t)\Lambda_s(\theta, t)\Lambda_r(\theta, t) \] - **Permanent - magnet flux linkage of a single coil**: \[ \phi_c(t)=N\int_{-l_{\text{max}}}^{l_{\text{max}}}B_r(\theta, t)r l d\theta \] - **Open - circuit back - EMF of a single coil**: \[ e_c(t)=-\frac{d\phi_c(t)}{dt} \] - **Winding factor**: \[ k_w = k_p\times k_d \] where the pitch factor \(k_p\) and the distribution factor \(k_d\) are respectively: \[ k_p=\left|\sin\left(\frac{\pi h_o}{Q}\right)\right| \] \[ k_d=\text{determined according to the phase distribution} \] Through these analyses and formulas, the paper provides for the understanding and...
