Abstract:Recently, biomaterials have received great attention due to their generally biodegradable, safe, low-cost and nontoxic characteristics, especially in the field of organic electronics such as organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Herein, a highly transparent and flexible conductive substrate based on eco-friendly cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) is successfully developed by embedding silver nanowires (Ag NWs) into the TEMPO-oxidized CNFs (TOCN) through a facile, printable transfer method. The nano-size fibers of TOCN and its more compact winding network enable homogeneous hybrid with Ag NWs and simultaneously allow high potion of visible light to pass through the derived hybrid film. Meanwhile, our transfer method can firmly confine the Ag NWs on the substrate's surface to provide strong adhesion and exempts the thermal-induced aggregation. The TOCN/AgNWs substrate exhibits a low sheet resistance of 2.62 Ω sq−1 with a high optical transparency of 78.5% (at 550 nm), being comparable to the properties of commercial polyethylene naphthalate/indium-tin-oxide (PEN/ITO) substrate. Besides, as benefiting from its compact nanoscale morphology, the TOCN/AgNWs substrate shows a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 3.37 (10−6/K) and good mechanical stability that can withstand 15 peeling cycles and 500 bending cycles (with a bending radius of 0.8 mm) without showing any degradation in sheet resistance. Finally, an efficient flexible OPV is successfully fabricated using this conductive substrate and shows acceptable bending durability. Our results provide a new perspective for the development of sustainable flexible conductive substrates.
