Abstract:For the realization of high-efficiency flexible optoelectronic devices, transparent electrodes should be fabricated through a low-temperature process and have the crucial feature of low surface roughness. In this paper, we demonstrated a two-step spray-coating method for producing large-scale, smooth and flexible silver nanowire (AgNW)-poly3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) composite electrodes. Without the high-temperature annealing process, the conductivity of the composite film was improved via the lamination of highly conductive PEDOT:PSS modified by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Under the room temperature process condition, we fabricated the AgNW-PEDOT:PSS composite film showing an 84.3% mean optical transmittance with a 10.76 Ω sq(-1) sheet resistance. The figure of merit Φ(TC) was higher than that obtained from the indium tin oxide (ITO) films. The sheet resistance of the composite film slightly increased less than 5.3% during 200 cycles of tensile and compression folding, displaying good electromechanical flexibility for use in flexible optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Patterning of silver nanowires (AgNWs) used in fabricating flexible and transparent electrodes (FTEs) is essential for constructing a variety of optoelectronic devices. However, patterning AgNW electrodes using a simple, inexpensive, high-resolution, designable, and scalable process remains a challenge. Therefore, herein a novel solvent-free photolithographic technique using a UV-curable pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) film for patterning AgNWs is introduced. The UV-curable PSA film can be selectively patterned by photopolymerization under UV exposure through a photomask. The AgNWs embedded in the non-photocured adhesive areas of the film are firmly held by a crosslinked network of photocurable resin when the patterned film is attached to the AgNW-coated substrate and additionally irradiated by UV light. After peeling off the film, the positive pattern of AgNW electrodes remains on the substrate, while the negative pattern is transferred to the film. This solvent-free photolithographic technique, which does not use toxic solvents, provides superior pattern features, such as fine line widths and spacings, sharp line edges, and low roughness. Therefore, the developed technique could be successfully applied in the development of flexible and transparent optoelectronic devices, such as a self-cleaning electro-wetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices, transparent heaters, and FTEs.

High performance silver nanowire based transparent electrodes reinforced by conductive polymer adhesive

Abstract:Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) are an essential component for modern opto-electronic devices such as solar cells, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and touch screen panels. However, traditional indium tin oxide (ITO) cannot meet the demand for the next generation highly flexible TCEs, and thus many novel alternative materials and technologies are blooming, such as super-aligned carbon nanotube, graphenes, conducting polymer and metal nanowire and so on. Among them, silver nanowires (Ag NWs) have been considered as one of the most promising technologies for TCEs, featured with superior electrical and optical properties. However, there are still two major challenges for Ag NWs-based TCEs technology to overcome. One is the poor mechanical interconnection between the Ag NWs conducting networks and transparent substrate, the other is the high contact resistance of the junctions among Ag NWs. Here we report a novel two-step electrostatic spraying process to fabricate Ag NWs TCEs composite with selectively coated conductive polymer, i.e. poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene: polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). Additionally, we applied plasma treatment to the materials between two-step electrostatic spraying process, which rendered sintering of junctions between the Ag NWs at room temperature, and thus increasing the conductivity of the TCEs by at least three orders of magnitude. Results showed that by adjusting the electrostatic spraying process parameters, selective deposition can be achieved, i.e. the conductive polymer could tightly bound to the Ag NWs network. As compared to an even distribution of the coating layer in the whole area, selective coating rendered the negligible loss of transmittance (0.2% at most) and excellent adhesion to the substrate. Moreover, the composited TCEs exhibited 85.3% mean optical transmittance and 35.8 Omega/sq sheet resistance. Based on our results, we believe that this technology can be used for roll-to-roll preparation of silver nanowires (Ag NWs)-based TCEs.

Abstract:The next generation of optoelectronic devices requires transparent conductive electrodes to be flexible, inexpensive and compatible with large scale manufacturing processes. We report an ultrasmooth, highly conductive and transparent composite electrode on a flexible photopolymer substrate by employing a template stripping method. A random silver nanowire (AgNW) network buried in poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film constituted the composite electrode. Besides the effectively decreased surface roughness, its sheet resistance and transmittance are comparable to those of conventional PEDOT:PSS electrode. As a result, the efficiency of the OLEDs based on the composite electrode exhibited 25% enhancement compared to the OLEDs with conventional PEDOT:PSS electrode. Moreover, the performance of the flexible OLEDs remains stable after over one hundred bending cycles.
Large-Area And Uniform Silver Nanowires Based Transparent Electrodes On Rigid And Flexible Substrates Fabricated By Polymethylmethacrylate-Assisted Spin-Coating

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a simple and full-solution polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)assisted spin-coating method to produce silver nanowire (Ag NW) networks on both rigid and flexible substrates as transparent electrodes. Because of the high viscosity of PMMA, Ag NWs embedded in it can be distributed uniformly over a large area. Thus, through this method, transparent electrodes with high optical transmittance (similar to 0.91, better than that of a 80nm thick ITO that is typically applied to solar cells), good electrical conductivity (similar to 15 Omega/sq on average, much better than that of ITO) and long-term stability have been demonstrated on 4'' glass substrates, which are also better than the devices fabricated without the assistance of PMMA. This method has also been extended to flexible substrates. Good uniformity is achieved over a large area of 5 cm x 5 cm. Two simple application demonstrations indicate again the great potential of our method for mass production of Ag NW networks, which are likely to replace ITO as transparent electrodes.
Facile Fabrication of Large-Scale Silver Nanowire-Pedot:Pss Composite Flexible Transparent Electrodes for Flexible Touch Panels

Abstract:Large-scale silver nanowire (AgNW)-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composite transparent flexible electrodes (FTEs) were fabricated via a Mayer rod coating method, and the optoelectrical properties, surface topography, mechanical stability and touch sensing performance were investigated in detail. The AgNW-PEDOT:PSS composite FTEs show high optoelectrical properties with a sheet resistance of 12 Omega/sq and a transmittance of 96% at 550 nm, and can maintain after 100 times of wiping or 5000 times of bending. The PEDOT:PSS aggregating at the junctions of AgNWs provides highly conductive pathways and enhances the adhesion between AgNWs and substrates. As a proof of concept demonstration, 7 x 7 cm(2) transparent touch panel is fabricated using AgNW-PEDOT:PSS composite FTEs as top and bottom electrodes, and can operate on a non-flat surface and perform properly after 2000 times of writing or operating 24 h. The newly designed AgNW-PEDOT:PSS composite FTE is a promising candidate of brittle and expensive ITO for flexible optoelectrical devices.
A Stretchable, Transparent, and Mechanically Robust Silver Nanowire–Polydimethylsiloxane Electrode for Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:The application of flexible indium tin oxide (ITO-free) electrochromic devices has steadily attracted widespread attention in wearable devices. Recently, silver nanowire/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (AgNW/PDMS)-based stretchable conductive films have raised great interest as ITO-free substrate for flexible electrochromic devices. However, it is still difficult to achieve high transparency with low resistance due to the weak binding force between AgNW and PDMS with low surface energy because of the possibility of detaching and sliding occurring at the interface. Herein, we propose a method to pattern the pre-cured PDMS (PT-PDMS) by stainless steel film as a template through constructed micron grooves and embedded structure, to prepare a stretchable AgNW/PT-PDMS electrode with high transparency and high conductivity. The stretchable AgNW/PT-PDMS electrode can be stretched (5000 cycles), twisted, and surface friction (3M tape for 500 cycles) without significant loss of conductivity (ΔR/R ≈ 16% and 27%). In addition, with the increase of stretch (stretching to 10–80%), the AgNW/PT-PDMS electrode transmittance increased, and the conductivity increased at first and then decreased. It is possible that the AgNWs in the micron grooves are spread during PDMS stretching, resulting in a larger spreading area and higher transmittance of the AgNWs film; at the same time, the nanowires between the grooves come into contact, thus increasing conductivity. An electrochromic electrode constructed with the stretchable AgNW/PT-PDMS exhibited excellent electrochromic behavior (transmittance contrast from ~61% to ~57%) even after 10,000 bending cycles or 500 stretching cycles, indicating high stability and mechanical robustness. Notably, this method of preparing transparent stretch electrodes based on patterned PDMS provides a promising solution for developing electronic devices with unique structures and high performance.

Abstract:The efficient utilization of Ag NW by avoiding their aggregation and multi-layer stacking in their networks can improve the optical and electrical properties of the derived transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs). In this work, we develop a two-step dip-coating process to prepare Ag NW networks on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates using three types of Ag NW with length/diameters (L/D) ratio of 100, 400 and 1000 respectively. The NW with small or medium L/D (100 and 400) are likely to form order-enhanced networks since they are rigid and easy to be separated. The TECs prepared by this approach present much higher performance than those prepared by spray coating. The optimal Ag NW-based TCEs show a typical sheet resistance of 35 Omega sq(-1) with high transparency of 92%. The polymer solar cells constructed on the resulting TCEs can give an efficiency of 3.28%, demonstrating the potential application of our Ag NW/PET films as the ITO alternative in flexible solar cells.
Mechanisms of reducing postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting: a systematic review of current techniques

Abstract:Background Multimodal recovery programmes decrease hospital stay. The objective of this systematic review was to assess how single-modality evidence-based care principles, regarding postoperative analgesia and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) prophylaxis, combine to achieve this. Methods A systematic review of randomised controlled trials was performed. Relevant trials compared postoperative epidural analgesia/parenteral opioid analgesia/paracetamol/non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and postoperative antiemetics. The effect on recovery was evaluated in terms of length of hospital stay, pain intensity, duration of gastrointestinal dysfunction and incidence of PONV. Results Twenty-three trials were included. Epidural anaesthesia failed to reduce length of stay or the incidence of PONV when compared to controls. Pain intensity and time to first bowel movement were reduced (p<0.05). Paracetamol did not reduce the incidence of PONV. NSAIDs reduced postoperative opioid consumption and the incidence of PONV (p<0.05). Dexamethasone and 5-HT3 antagonists reduced the incidence of PONV compared to controls. Conclusions Epidural anaesthesia appears to not reduce length of hospital stay or incidence of PONV despite reducing pain intensity and ileus. NSAIDs are more effective than paracetamol in reducing postoperative opioid consumption and PONV, while dexamethasone and 5-HT3 antagonists are both effective in reducing PONV.
Cohesively Enhanced Conductivity and Adhesion of Flexible Silver Nanowire Networks by Biocompatible Polymer Sol–Gel Transition

Abstract:Silver nanowire (AgNW) networks are a promising candidate to replace indium tin oxide (ITO) as transparent conductors. In this paper, a novel transparent composite conductor composed of AgNW/biocompatible alginate gel on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate, with synchronously enhanced adhesion and reduced resistivity, is prepared without high‐temperature annealing. The sheet resistance of the flexible AgNW/PET film reduces from 300 to 50.3 Ohm sq−1 at transmittance of 94%. The optical and electrical performance is superior to that obtained from the flexible ITO film on PET. Meanwhile, the sheet resistance does not show great change after tape test, suggesting a good adhesion of AgNW to the polymer substrate. Moreover, the AgNW composite film shows a good stability to resist long‐term storage, solvent damage, and ultrasonication. Finally, polymer solar cells employing the composite AgNW film as the electrode are realized, displaying an efficiency of 2.44%.

Abstract:We have proposed a full-solution polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)-assisted spin-coating method for uniformly distributing silver nanowires, which are carried in PMMA, on both rigid and flexible substrates as transparent electrodes. Abstract:A key feature of organic electronic devices is their mechanical flexibility. However, the performance of flexible organic optoelectronic devices still lags behind the performance of devices on rigid substrates. This is due, in particular, to the lack of flexible transparent electrodes that simultaneously offer low resistance, high transparency and a smooth surface. Here, we report flexible transparent electrodes created using water-processed silver nanowires and a polyelectrolyte. Due to ionic electrostatic charge repulsion, the nanowires form grid-like structures in a single step, leading to smooth, flexible electrodes that have a sheet resistance of around 10 Ω □−1 and a transmittance of around 92% (excluding the substrate). To illustrate the potential of the approach in organic electronics, we use the flexible electrodes to create organic photovoltaic devices. The devices are tested with different types of donors and acceptors, and exhibit performance comparable to devices based on commercial rigid electrodes. Furthermore, flexible single-junction and tandem devices achieve power conversion efficiencies of 13.1% and 16.5%, respectively. Flexible transparent electrodes made from silver nanowires that form grid-like structures due to ionic electrostatic charge repulsion can be used to create flexible single-junction and tandem organic photovoltaic devices with power conversion efficiencies of 13.1% and 16.5%, respectively.

Abstract:High-performance flexible multilayer transparent conducting electrodes (TCE) based on silver nanowires (AgNWs), graphene oxide (GO), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) materials on the flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate were successfully fabricated by spin-coating technique. The multilayer electrodes were fabricated using different combinations of AgNWs, GO, and PEDOT:PSS materials. The morphological, physical properties, surface roughness, and durability of the fabricated electrodes were investigated. The results indicated that the five-layer structured electrode of PEDOT:PSS/GO/AgNW/GO/PEDOT:PSS possesses the best performance with a sheet resistance of 23 Ω/sq, transmittance of 85 %, and the figure of merit (FoM) value of 8.6, which is equivalent to the commercial ITO electrode. Besides, the five-layer structured electrode possessed a surface roughness of only 8 nm. The PEDOT:PSS/GO/AgNW/GO/PEDOT:PSS electrode also exhibited high durability after being exposed to the environment for 30 days. Owing to the combination of AgNWs, GO, and PEDOT: PSS materials, the five-layer electrode of PEDOT:PSS/GO/AgNW/GO/PEDOT:PSS improved the inherent disadvantages of AgNWs electrodes. In addition, the electrode possessed good conductivity, high stability, low cost, and simplicity. The electrode can be used as a promising electrode in optoelectronic devices.
Ice‐Templated, Large‐Area Silver Nanowire Pattern for Flexible Transparent Electrode

Abstract:Flexible transparent electrodes are critically important for the emerging flexible and stretchable electronic and optoelectronic devices. To this end, transparent polymer films coated with silver nanowires (AgNWs) have been intensively studied in the past decade. However, it remains a grand challenge to achieve both high conductivity and transmittance in large‐area films, mainly due to the poor alignment of AgNWs and their high junction resistance. Here, the successful attempt to realize large‐area AgNW patterns on various substrates by a 2D ice‐templating approach is reported. With a relatively low dosage of AgNWs (4 µg·cm−2), the resulted flexible electrode simultaneously achieves high optical transmittance (≈91%) and low sheet resistance (20 Ω·sq−1). In addition, the electrode exhibits excellent durability during cyclic bending (≈10 000 times) and stretching (50% strain). The potential applications of the flexible transparent electrode in both touch screen and electronic skin sensor, which can monitor the sliding pressure and direction in real‐time, are demonstrated. More importantly, it is believed that the study represents a facile and low‐cost approach to assemble various nanomaterials into large‐area functional patterns for advanced flexible devices.

Abstract:Instability and large wire-wire contact resistance of silver nanowires (AgNWs) have seriously hindered their practical applications as electrodes in optoelectronic devices. Although various methods have been demonstrated to improve the stability and conductivity of the AgNWs, a simple and low-cost process, especially compatible to the flexible substrates for their applications in flexible devices, is still a challenge. Here, perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer has been employed as a surface-passivation layer on the AgNWs through a simple surface coating. The PFSA passivation can simultaneously improve the conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical stability of the AgNWs. As a result, the PFSA-passivated AgNWs film maintains an almost constant conductivity under ambient condition after heating for 30 min at 250 °C or 10 days storage at room temperature, and 600 continuous bending cycles at a bending radius of 1 mm. The PFSA-passivated AgNWs have been applied to flexibly organic light emitting devices as their electrodes, and both mechanical stability and long-term operational stability have been improved.

Abstract:Treatments of atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation in children are generally conservative. Previous reports have proposed that surgical treatment be reserved for fixed rotatory subluxation of more than 3 months duration, irreducible deformity or cases of recurrence. Six skeletally immature patients with Fielding type III atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation were treated conservatively with or without subsequent atlanto-axial arthrodesis. The follow-up period for all the cases exceeded 18 months. Results and outcomes were analysed with an emphasis on the delay until diagnosis, causes of delays in diagnosis and factors influencing the necessity of surgical intervention. Neither mortality nor major morbidity was noted in any cases in this study. In our experience, type III fixed rotatory subluxation of 6 weeks duration will potentially recur. We recommend early surgery for type III fixed rotatory subluxation of more than than 3 months' duration, with atlanto-axial arthrodesis being a safe and effective procedure in children.

The application of traditional indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes in flexible devices is limited by its poor mechanical stability and expensive manufacturing equipment costs. In this work, the composite FTEs are achieved by combining one-dimensional silver nanowire (AgNW) with two-dimensional transition-metal carbide (Ti3C2Tx MXene). The one and two-dimensional (1D:2D) structured composite AgNW:MXene FTE is generated under electrostatic interaction. 2D MXene nanosheets fill the voids of the AgNW networks and weld the wire-wire junctions by the effect of capillary force. The AgNW:MXene FTEs obtain superb photoelectric performance with a low sheet resistance of 10.91 Ω/sq and high transmittance of 82.84%. Besides, the AgNW:MXene FTEs show high mechanically robustness after 1000 bending tests at a curvature radius of 5 mm and long-term stability (60% relative humidity and 120 °C). Eventually, the AgNW:MXene FTEs are integrated into 0.1 cm2 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs), exhibiting a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.22% and 16.03%, respectively. The stability and mechanical properties of the corresponding flexible devices are also improved.

Abstract:Solution processed transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) were fabricated via layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition of silver nanowires (AgNWs). First, the AgNWs were coated on (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane modified glass substrates. Then, multilayer AgNW films were obtained by using 1,3-propanedithiol as a linker via LBL deposition, which made it possible to control the optical transmittance and sheet resistance of multilayer thin films. Next, thermal annealing of AgNW films was performed in order to agent their electrical conductivity. AgNW monolayer films were characterized by UV-Vis spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and sheet resistance measurement by four-point probe method. The high performances were achieved with multilayer films, which provided sheet resistances of 9 Ω/sq, 11 Ω/sq with optical transmittances of 71%, 70% at 550 nm, which are comparable to commercial indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. Finally, an organic photovoltaic device was fabricated on the AgNW multilayer electrodes for demonstration purpose, which exhibited power conversion efficiency of 1.1%.

Abstract:The constantly expanding field of flexible organic electronics has led to a high demand for flexible, stable, and transparent electrodes that retain their conductivity at high strain deformation. Amongst many possible transparent conductive electrodes (TCE) of which indium tin oxide (ITO) is the most renowned, silver nanowires (AgNWs) proved to be an excellent alternative with a high conductivity and transparency. These one-dimensional silver nanostructures form a flexible mesh of nm-thin wires that can be applied using solution processing and printing techniques. Ultrasonic spray coating is a high-end low-cost, environmentally friendly and roll-to-roll compatible printing technique. AgNWs with three different diameters (50,70 and 115 nm) are ultrasonically spray coated on glass and demonstrate sheet resistances lower than 10 Ω sq-1 combined with high transparencies up to 85% like ITO. Consequently, the conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS is ultrasonically spray coated to fill up the cavities between the AgNW-mesh and to planarize the surface. The ultrasonically spray coated AgNWs/PEDOT:PSS electrodes are employed as TCE for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) showing very promising results with a maximum luminous flux of 1.75 lm and a maximum luminous efficacy of about 11 lm W-1 at 3 V driving voltage. Preparation of Device-Level ZnO-Covered Silver Nanowires Films and Their Applications as Sub-Electrode for Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Silver nanowire films are good candidates to be used as transparent conductive films that could be widely utilized in organic photoelectronic devices such as polymer solar cells. However, their application is usually limited, as they are mainly used as top electrode materials; otherwise, they would be prone to complex transferring processes. In this study, we successfully prepared device-level ZnO-covered silver nanowire (AgNWs/ZnO) films. ZnO was prepared by a spray pyrolysis method using zinc-ammonia solution at a relatively low temperature (95°C). The films showed good adhesive properties to the glass substrate, considering it withstood the process of applying polyimide tapes on the surface and tearing them off more than 100 times. It also exhibited good conductivity (∼24 Ω/sq) with high transmittance in the visible range (>80%). After a simple polish and patterning, AgNWs/ZnO showed a good performance as a sub-electrode for polymer solar cells. The PM6:Y6 devices achieved a high power conversion efficiency of 8.37% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.81 V, a short-circuit current density of 18.18 mA/cm 2 , and a yield of 81.25%. This indicates that the technology has a good prospect of large-scale fabrication of organic photoelectronic devices.
