Abstract:The Gru¨neisen parameter has long been used in equations of state for solids to relate thermodynamic properties to lattice vibrational spectra [1]. A few papers have extended the concept to studies of liquid structure. Knopoff and Shapiro [2] have evaluated a Gru¨neisen parameter for water and for mercury, attempting to relate its temperature dependence in a limited range to atomic clustering within the liquid. Sharma [3], in a series of papers, has evaluated a pseudo-Gru¨neisen parameter in mercury and liquefied gases and related it to internal pressures, a solubility parameter, and clustering phenomena. In this paper we evaluate the Gru¨neisen parameter for a variety of fluids, and show how it occurs in many problems in compressible fluid hydrodynamics, without reference to concepts of liquid structure. The work extends that reported in an earlier paper for the special case of steady state, single phase flow [4].

Abstract:At low temperatures the properties of the isotope He-3 differ considerably from those of He-4 because of quantum effects. Based on the work of Gibbons, the thermodynamic properties can be calculated with a modified Strobridge equation between 4K and 20K, while between 20K and 100K a correlation based on the modified quantum version of the principle of corresponding states instead. In this correlation the reduced de Broglie wavelength lambda(*) is introduced as the third parameter besides the reduced temperature and volume. Hereby, a program is built to compute the properties of He-3 between I K and 100K, including the PVT properties, entropy, enthalpy, internal energy, thermal conductivity and viscosity. The results agree with the technical report AFML-TR-67-175 of Air Products and Chemical Inc.

Abstract:Extensive quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations are performed to determine the equation of state, sound velocity, and phase diagram of middle-Z krypton in a warm dense regime where the pressure (P) is up to 300 GPa and the temperature is up to 60 kK. The shock wave experimental data are used to validate the present theoretical models. It is found that, within the regime of the current density (ρ) and temperature (T), sound velocity can effectively discriminate differences between different theoretical models, and therefore it is more suitable as a benchmark to verify the practicability of models. The QMD-simulated results of the ionic structures and electronic properties imply the occurrence of two kinds of phase transitions, including transition from a solidlike to fluid state and that from an insulator to conductive fluid in this T-P regime. The calculated electrical conductivities confirm that the metallization transition occurs at about 60 GPa and 17.5 kK along the principal Hugoniot. With the help of simulation results and experimental data, a comprehensive phase diagram for krypton is constructed by using the solid-fluid and insulator-metal fluid phase boundaries, which fills the gap of the experimental work [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 112, 7925 (2015)PNASA60027-842410.1073/pnas.1421801112]. These results will provide an instructive basis for the experimental investigations of rare gases over a wide T-P range.
Diffusivity of Liquid Mixture Confined in Silicate Pore by Molecular Dynamic Simulation

Abstract:Diffusivities of equal proportion liquid mixture is studied by computer simulation confined in silicate pore. The diffusivities of liquid argon and krypton in the macrovolumen systems have been calculated by equilibrium molecular dynamic (EMD) simulations in order to prove the program's validity. Additionally, the diffusivities of argon and krypton binary mixture confined in slit porous silicate have been computed by EMD simulation at different reduced densities and distances between two walls at room temperature ( T = 298 K). According to the simulation data, five experiential models are presented. The models can predict the diffusivities of argon and krypton binary mixture and be used in industry.

Abstract:Natural gas is gaseous fossil fuel consisting primarily of methane (CH4). Argon (Ar) is a precious gas resource among the nonhydrocarbons in natural gas, and it can be separated from the natural gas; thus, it is very necessary to understand the vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) of (Ar + CH4). The investigations on the VLE data of (Ar + CH4) have mostly focused on the temperature range of (>140 K), while studies are relatively scarce below 140 K. In this work, the VLE data of (Ar + CH4) from 95 to 135 K were measured by experiment. Four different mixing rules (HV, MHV1, MHV2, and LCVM) with the same equation of state (PR) and the four equations of state (SRK, PR, PRSV, NM) with the same mixing rule (MHV1) were used to correlate the VLE of (Ar + CH4), respectively. The research results were discussed in detail. In addition, the excess Gibbs free energy of (Ar + CH4) was further analyzed. The results showed that the excess Gibbs free energy of (Ar + CH4) was more than zero, and the curves of excess Gibbs free energy and excess enthalpy of (Ar + CH4) had good symmetry.

Abstract:In warm dense xenon, thermally excited and pressure-ionized electrons are essential for calculating the equation of state; however, the classical Thomas Fermi model is unsuitable for describing this state. Therefore it is necessary to find an appropriate theoretical model to express the thermal characteristics of electrons in warm dense Xe. In this study, we use the average atom-in-jellium(AJ) model to compute the contribution of thermally excited and pressure-ionized electrons of Xe over a wide range of temperatures and densities. The electron resonance state in the AJ model is treated by the adaptive mesh movement method. Moreover a method for correcting the cold pressure curve(which is used in the liquid phase calculations) in the AJ model is proposed. For the liquid phase, the ion motion contribution is expressed by the liquid perturbation theory of the corrected rigid-ion sphere model. For the solid phase, the ion motion contribution is described by the Debye model combined with anharmonic correction. Our calculated Hugoniot curve of Xe coincides with those of the experiments, first-principles density functional calculations and other theoretical models. The melting line of Xe is also consistent with the results of first-principle calculations and other theoretical models.

Abstract:Brillouin scattering measurements were performed on liquid argon in a diamond anvil cell at various solidification points up to 503 K. With the measured results from the 60 degrees platelet- and 180 degrees back-scattering geometries, the sound velocity, refractive index, experimental equation of state, and adiabatic bulk modulus of liquid argon as a function of pressure were determined. The discrepancy between experimental and previous calculated equation of state indicates that the many-body contribution to the density of liquid argon increases with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature. By analyzing the Brillouin spectra in the coexistence of liquid and solid phase regions, the volume change and latent heat of solid-liquid transformation along the equilibrium curve have been also obtained for the first time. Abstract:The approximate method to treat the practical quantum anharmonic solids proposed by Hardy,Lacks and Shukla is reformulated with explicit physical meanings.It is shown that the quantum effect is important at low temperature,it can be treated in the harmonic framework; and the anharmonic effect is important at high temperature and tends to zero at low temperature,it can be treated by using a classical approximation.The alternative formulation is easier for various applications,and is applied to a Debye-Gruneisen solid with the generalized Lennard-Jones intermolecular interaction.The expressions for the Debye temperature and Gruneisen parameter as a function of volume are analytically derived.The analytic equation of state is applied to predict the thermodynamic properties of solid xenon at normal-pressure with the nearest-neighbour Lennard-Jones interaction,and is further applied to research the properties of solid xenon and krypton at high pressure by using an all-neighbour Lennard-Jones interaction.The theoretical results are in agreement with the experiments.

Abstract:The inverse problem of parameterizing intermolecular potentials given macroscopic transport and thermodynamic data is addressed. Procedures are developed to create arbitrary-precision algorithms for transport collision integrals, using the Lennard-Jones (12–6) potential as an example. Interpolation formulas are produced that compute these collision integrals to four-digit accuracy over the reduced-temperature range 0.3 ≤ T ⁎ ≤ 400 , allowing very fast computation. Lennard-Jones parameters for neon, argon, and krypton are determined by simultaneously fitting the observed temperature dependences of their viscosities and second virial coefficients—one of the first times that a thermodynamic and a dynamic property have been used simultaneously for Lennard-Jones parameterization. In addition to matching viscosities and second virial coefficients within the bounds of experimental error, the determined Lennard-Jones parameters are also found to predict the thermal conductivity and self-diffusion coefficient accurately, supporting the value of the Lennard-Jones (12–6) potential for noble-gas transport-property correlation.

Abstract:Interaction potentials determined ab initio from quantum mechanics were used to calculate the thermophysical properties of six binary mixtures of noble gases: helium–neon, helium–argon, helium–krypton, neon–argon, neon–krypton and argon–krypton. From the ab initio potentials, the second pressure virial coefficient, the binary diffusion coefficient and the thermal diffusion factor were computed for the considered binary mixtures at low density in the temperature range 100–5000 K employing well-established formulas in statistical thermodynamics and the kinetic theory of dilute gases. In all cases, while not as good as that for pure noble gases, close agreement between experimental data and the theoretically calculated values shows that ab initio potentials are reliable for the calculation of accurate thermophysical properties of binary mixtures of noble gases over a wide temperature range.

Abstract:Henry's law constant, which describes the proportionality of dissolved gas to partial pressure of free gas in liquid–gas equilibrium systems, can also be applied to mass transport applications. In this work, we investigated an approach for determining the solubility of noble gases in a molten salt liquid utilizing the equilibrium concept of Henry's gas constant. Henry's gas constant is described as a mathematical function dependent on the van der Waals radius of the noble gas and the temperature of the molten salt. The alteration in Gibbs free energy encompasses contributions from both surface and volume energies. Enthalpy and entropy are deduced from these surface and volume energies in the Gibbs free energy formulation. A comparative analysis was conducted between the conventional method and our proposed model. Moreover, useful chemical properties can be determined from examination of surface and volume energies. Our findings provide an accurate and general theory of Gibbs free energy that can be validated experimentally based on the model proposed herein. This work unifies the prediction of Henry gas constant and subsequently the entropy and enthalpy calculation for noble gases in a molten salt solution to a single functional form using van der Waals radius of the gas and temperature of the system. This functional form is then used to perform a multiple regression method to find two parameters corresponding to the surface energy and volume energy. These two parameters are consistent between all combinations of noble gas and molten salt.

Abstract:This paper presents a refined technique to describe two-dimensional phase transitions in dense fluids adsorbed on a crystalline surface. Prediction of parameters of 2D liquid-solid equilibrium is known to be an extremely challenging problem, which is mainly due to a small difference in thermodynamic functions of coexisting phases and lack of accuracy of numerical experiments in case of their high density. This is a serious limitation of various attempts to circumvent this problem. To improve this situation, a new methodology based on the kinetic Monte Carlo method was applied. The methodology involves analysis of equilibrium gas-liquid and gas-solid systems undergoing an external potential, which allows gradual shifting parameters of the phase coexistence. The interrelation of the chemical potential and tangential pressure for each system is then treated with the Gibbs-Duhem equation to obtain the point of intersection corresponding to the liquid/solid-solid equilibrium coexistence. The methodology is demonstrated on the krypton-graphite system below and above the 2D critical temperature. Using experimental data on the liquid-solid and the commensurate-incommensurate transitions in the krypton monolayer derived from adsorption isotherms, the Kr-graphite Lennard-Jones parameters have been corrected resulting in a higher periodic potential modulation.

Abstract:In this work, new equations of state for the binary mixtures H 2 + Ar, H 2 + He, and H 2 + Ne are presented. The equations are formulated in terms of the reduced Helmholtz energy and allow for the calculation of all thermodynamic properties over the entire fluid surface including the gas phase, liquid phase, supercritical region, and equilibrium states. The models are validated by comparisons with experimental data and their physical behavior is analyzed. Furthermore, the new equations of state are compared to other state-of-the-art models from the literature.

Abstract:Motivated by the poor understanding of the applicability of new exchange-correlation (XC) functionals to warm dense matter (WDM), we designed and performed multiple-shock reverberation compression experiments on dense krypton to evaluate explicitly the implications of recently derived XC functionals. The equation of states of krypton up to 155 GPa and 45 000 K, which ranges from an initial dense gaseous state up to the insulator-metal transition regime, were determined accurately. It is found that the experimental data are better reproduced by the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) XC functional compared to the conventional Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof and Van der Waals (vdW) DF1 functionals, elucidating that the introduction of the kinetic energy density and the intermediate-range vdW interaction is decisive. However, the incorporation of long-range interactions into the SCAN (SCAN+rVV10 XC functional) results in a noticeably stiffer prediction due to an overestimation of the density and internal energy of the system at low densities and temperatures. Our evaluation of the Karasiev-Sjostrom-Dufty-Trickey free-energy functional experimentally validates the XC thermal effect in the WDM regime, verifies the previous predictions, and sheds light on a direction for future theoretical efforts. Finally, a phase diagram of krypton is given, which provides a clear picture for understanding the thermophysical behavior of krypton in a wider temperature-pressure range.

Abstract:A three-parameter equation of state (EOS) without physically incorrect oscillations is proposed based on the generalized Lennard-Jones (GLJ) potential and the approach in developing linear isotherm regularity (LIR) EOS of Parsafar and Mason [J. Phys. Chem., 1994, 49, 3049]. The proposed (GLIR) EOS can include the LIR EOS therein as a special case. The three-parameter GLIR, Parsafar and Mason (PM) [Phys. Rev. B, 1994, 49, 3049], Shanker, Singh and Kushwah (SSK) [Physica B, 1997, 229, 419], Parsafar, Spohr and Patey (PSP) [J. Phys. Chem. B, 2009, 113, 11980], and reformulated PM and SSK EOSs are applied to 30 metallic solids within wide pressure ranges. It is shown that the PM, PMR and PSP EOSs for most solids, and the SSK and SSKR EOSs for several solids, have physically incorrect turning points, and pressure becomes negative at high enough pressure. The GLIR EOS is capable not only of overcoming the problem existing in other five EOSs where the pressure becomes negative at high pressure, but also gives results superior to other EOSs.
Molecular dynamics investigation on Widom line of binary mixtures of supercritical carbon dioxide containing noble gases

Abstract:This work focuses on the effects of the addition of noble gases (Xe and Kr) at different concentrations on the thermodynamic properties and Widom line (WL) of supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO 2 ), as well as the microstructures of the binary mixture at different thermodynamic state points. Three thermodynamic properties (volume expansivity α p , isothermal compressibility κ T , and isobaric heat capacity C p ) of CO 2 + Xe and CO 2 + Kr binary mixtures are investigated in the near-critical region (280 K to 370 K, 8 MPa to 14 MPa), and both of them significantly reduce the peaks of the three thermodynamic properties compared to pure CO 2 , and this effect enhances as the concentration of noble gases increases. The WL constructed by the maxima of the three thermodynamic properties of the CO 2 + Xe binary mixture rotates clockwise around the critical point on the P-T plane as the concentration of Xe increases, while the same WL of the CO 2 + Kr binary mixture shifts in the direction of temperature decrease on the P-T plane as the concentration of Xe increases. The Radial distribution function (RDF) of Xe and Kr in CO 2 binary mixtures both exhibit significant first and blurry second peaks of RDF in the near-critical region consistent with pure CO 2 , which suggests the miscibility and homogeneity between CO 2 and the two noble gases combined with visualization of the simulated mixture system.

Abstract:It is shown that the three pure-component parameters in the Sanchez−Lacombe equation of state can be determined from the critical temperature, critical pressure, and acentric factor. Vapor pressures from the equation have accuracy comparable to that obtained with the original Soave−Redlich−Kwong equation and Peng−Robinson equation, even without introducing any temperature dependence in the parameters. If temperature dependence is added to the Sanchez−Lacombe e energy parameter, the accuracy in the vapor pressures can be improved.
