Abstract:The melting curves of iron over a wide range of pressures were determined by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the Sutton-Chen version of EAM (embedded atom method). The melting of iron was simulated with two methods, that is, the hysteresis (one-phase) approach and the two-phase approach. Both methods strongly reduced the overheating, and their results are in the close proximity at the applied pressures. The obtained melting curves are consistent with both the diamond anvil cell (DAC) experiments at ambient pressure and the shock wave (SW) measurements at high pressure. During the investigation of the atomic structures of iron, we found a slight increase in the coordination number on melting. When taking account of the ultrapressure melting curves obtained by the Clausius-Clapeyron slope, we found that the starting point is the key to determine the melting curves, and the melting temperatures computed by the Clausius-Clapeyron slope might change dramatically if the initial temperatures change. Finally, the thermal equation of state (EOS) and the pressure dependence of entropy of fusion AS of iron have also been obtained.

Abstract:In the framework of melting as a dislocation-mediated phase transition we derive an equation for the pressure dependence of the melting temperatures of the elements valid up to pressures of order their ambient bulk moduli. Melting curves are calculated for Al, Mg, Ni, Pb, the iron group (Fe, Ru, Os), the chromium group (Cr, Mo, W), the copper group (Cu, Ag, Au), noble gases (Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn), and six actinides (Am, Cm, Np, Pa, Th, U). These calculated melting curves are in good agreement with existing data. We also discuss the apparent equivalence of our melting relation and the Lindemann criterion, and the lack of the rigorous proof of their equivalence. We show that the would-be mathematical equivalence of both formulas must manifest itself in a new relation between the Grüneisen constant, bulk and shear moduli, and the pressure derivative of the shear modulus.

Abstract:Understanding the behavior of molecular systems under pressure is a fundamental problem in condensed matter physics. In the case of nitrogen, the determination of the phase diagram and in particular of the melting line, are largely open problems. Two independent experiments have reported the presence of a maximum in the nitrogen melting curve, below 90 GPa, however the position and the interpretation of the origin of such maximum differ. By means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory and thermodynamic integration techniques, we have determined the phase diagram of nitrogen in the range between 20 and 100 GPa. We find a maximum in the melting line, related to a transformation in the liquid, from molecular N_2 to polymeric nitrogen accompanied by an insulator-to-metal transition.

Abstract:Our understanding of the three basic states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases) is based on temperature and pressure phase diagrams with three phase transition lines: solid-gas, liquid-gas, and solid-liquid lines. There are analytical expressions P(T) for the first two lines derived on a purely general-theoretical thermodynamic basis. In contrast, there exists no similar function for the third, melting, line (ML). Here, we develop a general two-phase theory of MLs and their analytical form. This theory predicts the parabolic form of the MLs for normal melting, relates the MLs to thermal and elastic properties of liquid and solid phases, and quantitatively agrees with experimental MLs in different system types. We show that the parameters of the ML parabola are governed by fundamental physical constants. Abstract:Brillouin scattering measurements were performed on liquid argon in a diamond anvil cell at various solidification points up to 503 K. With the measured results from the 60 degrees platelet- and 180 degrees back-scattering geometries, the sound velocity, refractive index, experimental equation of state, and adiabatic bulk modulus of liquid argon as a function of pressure were determined. The discrepancy between experimental and previous calculated equation of state indicates that the many-body contribution to the density of liquid argon increases with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature. By analyzing the Brillouin spectra in the coexistence of liquid and solid phase regions, the volume change and latent heat of solid-liquid transformation along the equilibrium curve have been also obtained for the first time. Abstract:We investigate theoretically the crucial r\^{o}le of interstitialcies that trigger the melting of a boundary-free crystal. Based on an interstitialcy model that resembles the $J_1$-$J_2$ model of frustrated antiferromagnets with uniaxial anisotropy, we have calculated the exact partition function and correlation functions in a one-dimensional atom chain. The melting point and correlation behavior of this crystal model show the applicability of Lindemann criterion and Born criterion in the one-dimensional case.

Abstract:Using a self-developed combination of the thermodynamic integration and the ab initio path-integral molecular dynamics methods, we quantitatively studied the influence of nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on the melting of dense lithium at 45 GPa. We find that although the NQEs significantly change the free-energies of the competing solid and liquid phases, the melting temperature (Tm) is lowered by only ∼15 K, with values obtained using both classical and quantum nuclei in close proximity to a new experiment. Besides this, a substantial narrowing of the solid/liquid free-energy differences close to Tm was observed, in alignment with a tendency that glassy states might form upon rapid cooling. This tendency was demonstrated by the dynamics of crystallization in the two-phase simulations, which helps to reconcile an important conflict between two recent experiments. This study presents a simple picture for the phase diagram of lithium under pressure. It also indicates that claims on the influence of NQEs on phase diagrams should be carefully made and the method adopted offers a robust solution for such quantitative analyses.

Abstract:Thanks to the development of experimental high-pressure techniques and methods for crystal-structure prediction based on quantum mechanics, in the past decade, numerous new compounds, mostly binary, with atypical compositions have been predicted, and some have been synthesized. Differing from conventional solid-state materials, many of these new compounds are comprised of various homonuclear chemical species, such as dimers, trimers, pentagonal and heptagonal rings, polymeric chains, atomic layers and 3D networks. Strikingly, it has been shown that pressure can alter the chemistry of an element by activating its (semi)core electrons, unoccupied orbitals and even the non-atom-centred quantum orbitals located on the interstitial sites, leading to many new surprising phenomena. This Review provides a summary of atypical compounds that result from the effects of high pressure on either the chemical bonds or the local orbitals. We describe various unusual chemical species and motifs, show how the chemical properties of the elements are altered under pressure and illustrate how compound formation is favoured even in situations in which chemical bonds are not formed. An extraordinary new picture of chemistry emerges as we piece together these unexpected high-pressure phenomena. In marked contrast to the previously held beliefs regarding the behaviour of solids under pressure, we are learning that the quantum-mechanical features of electrons, such as those that lead to the formation of directional bonds, inhomogeneous distributions of electrons and atoms, as well as variations in symmetry, might be magnified under pressure. We discuss the influence of these phenomena on future studies that will probe chemistry at higher pressures and explore more complex chemical compositions than those that have been studied to date.

Abstract:High‐pressure melting, phase transitions and structures of iron have been studied to 84 GPa and 3500 K with an improved laser heated diamond anvil cell technique and in situ high P‐T x‐ray diffraction. At pressures below 60 GPa, the lower bound on the melting curve is close to those measured by Boehler [1993] and Saxena et al. [1993]; however, at pressures above 60 GPa our data indicate melting at higher temperatures than these studies, but still lower than the melting curve of Williams et al [1990]. The ε‐γ‐1 triple point is 60(±5) GPa and 2800(±200) K, based on our data of the ε‐γ phase transition and the observation of melting by in situ x‐ray diffraction. No solid phases other than ε‐Fe and γ‐Fe were observed in situ at high temperatures (>1000 K) and pressures to 84 GPa. However, the diffraction patterns of temperature quenched products at high pressure can be fit to other structures such as dhcp.

Abstract:The high temperature and high pressure Brillouin scattering studies of liquid ammonia have been performed in a diamond anvil cell. Acoustic velocity, refractive index, adiabatic bulk modulus, and the equation of state of liquid ammonia were determined at temperatures up to 410 K and at pressures up to the solidification point. Velocity and refractive index increase smoothly with increasing pressure along isothermals but decrease slightly with the temperature increase. The bulk modulus increases linearly with pressure and its slope dB/dP decreases slightly with increasing temperature from 6.67 at 297 K to 5.94 at 410 K.

Abstract:Based on in situ high-pressure and high-temperature neutron diffraction experiments at pressures of up to 4.1 GPa and temperatures of up to 1280 K, thermoelastic parameters were derived by using a Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. With the pressure derivative of the bulk modulus, K0′, fixed at 4.0, we obtained the ambient bulk modulus K0=31.5±0.7 GPa, the temperature derivative of bulk modulus at constant pressure (∂K/∂T)P=−2.7×10−2 GPa/K, the volumetric thermal expansivities αT(K−1)=9.8±0.71×10−5+12.62±1.09×10−8T at atmospheric pressure and αT(K−1)=5.45±1.17×10−5+6.53±1.45×10−8T at 3.0 GPa, and the pressure derivative of thermal expansion (∂α/∂P)T=−2.72×10−5 GPa−1 K−1. Within the experimental uncertainties, the ambient bulk modulus and volumetric thermal expansion determined from this work are in good agreement with previous experimental results, whereas the derived (∂KT/∂T)P and (∂α/∂P)T values provide the thermoelastic equation-of-state parameters for LiD. We also determined the melting temperature of LiD under high pressure. Our results reveal a substantially increased thermal stability for crystalline LiD when compared to a previous theoretical prediction that used a combined technique of two-phase simulation and first-principles molecular dynamics.

Abstract:The pressure effect on the melting behavior of lithium has been measured by observing the latent heat signatures of melting and freezing using differential thermal analysis (DTA). Samples were repeatedly melted and recrystallized at selected pressures up to 15 GPa in a multianvil press. Despite the weak DTA signals due to small sample sizes at high pressure, the melting and freezing temperatures were clearly determined from the derivatives of the DTA traces. We measured a drop in the melting temperature between 9 and 12 GPa, yielding a maximum at 10(2) GPa and 245(2) degrees C. This work highlights both the successes and failures of recent theoretical models for the melting behavior of this and related systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report a molecular dynamics study of transport coefficients and infinite frequency shear mod- ulus of liquid iron at high temperatures and high pressures. We observe a simultaneous rise of both shear viscosity and diffusion coefficient along the melting line and estimate if liquid iron can vitrify under Earth-core conditions. We show that in frames of the model studied in our work iron demonstrates a moderate increase of viscosity along the melting line. It is also demonstrated that in the limit of high temperatures and high pressures the liquid iron behaves similar to the soft spheres system with exponent n=4.6.

Role of Quantum Ion Dynamics in the Melting of Lithium

Abstract:The role of quantum ion dynamics in the low melting temperatures of Li is investigated from first principles theory. Free energies of solid and liquid phases are obtained at the classical and quantum ion levels. The results are used to determine the Li melting curve in the 40-60 and 110-150 GPa pressure ranges and are in excellent agreement with experimental data around 50 GPa. They predict the resumption of a positive melting slope at higher pressure. Quantum corrections to individual energy terms are far more significant than their net effect on the melting temperatures near 50 GPa, even though lithium behaves as a quantum solid at this pressure. The scales of these corrections increase with compression. A case is made for the possibility for anomalous melting at much higher pressures, where quantum ion dynamics are expected to play a prominent role.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that the Lindemann's criterion of melting can be formulated for two-dimensional classical solids using statistical mechanics arguments. With this formulation the expressions for the melting temperature are equivalent in three and two dimensions. Moreover, in two dimensions the Lindemann's melting criterion essentially coincides with the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young melting condition of dislocation unbinding.

Abstract:The properties of materials near structural phase transitions are often successfully described in the framework of Landau theory. While the focus is usually on phase transitions, which are induced by temperature changes approaching a critical temperature T-c, here we will discuss structural phase transformations driven by high hydrostatic pressure, as they are of major importance for understanding processes in the interior of the earth. Since at very high pressures the deformations of a material are generally very large, one needs to apply a fully nonlinear description taking physical as well as geometrical nonlinearities (finite strains) into account. In particular it is necessary to retune conventional Landau theory to describe such phase transitions. In Troster et al (2002 Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 55503) we constructed a Landau-type free energy based on an order parameter part, an order parameter-(finite) strain coupling and a nonlinear elastic term. This model provides an excellent and efficient framework for the systematic study of phase transformations for a wide range of materials up to ultrahigh pressures.

Structural and dynamic features of liquid Si under high pressure above the melting line minimum

Abstract:We report an {\it ab initio} simulation study of changes in structural and dynamic properties of liquid Si at 7 pressures ranging from 10.2 GPa to 24.3 GPa along the isothermal line 1150~K, which is above the minimum of the melting line. The increase of pressure from 10.2 GPa to 16 GPa causes strong reduction in the tetrahedral ordering of the most close neighbors. The diffusion coefficient shows a linear decay vs drop in atomic volume, that agrees with theoretical prediction for simple liquid metals, thus not showing any feature at the pressures corresponding to the different crystal phase boundaries. The Fourier-spectra of velocity autocorrelation function shows two-peak structure at pressures 20 GPa and higher. These characteristic frequencies correspond well to the peak frequencies of the transverse current spectral function in the second pseudo-Brillouin zone. Two almost flat branches of short-wavelength transverse modes were observed for all the studied pressures. We discuss the pressure evolution of characteristic frequencies in the longitudinal and transverse branches of collective modes.
