Abstract:In 1994, Cornelis Hoede and Xueliang Li introduced the clique polynomial of a graph. Also, a theorem for the edge subgraph expansion for clique polynomials. In this note we present a counter example for it and explain which case it could be a valid theorem.

Abstract:The graph polynomial for the number of independent sets of size $k$ in a general undirected graph is shown to be equal to an elementary symmetric polynomial of the vertex monomials, which are determined by the edges incident at the vertices. The edge variables that comprise the vertex monomials are shown to be nilpotent of degree two. The index of nilpotency of the algebra generated by the graph's vertex monomials is the order of a maximum independent set of the graph. Graph polynomials for the number of cliques and vertex covers are derived from the graph polynomial for independent sets. The graph polynomial for the number of bipartite cuts is given as a coefficient of a multivariate Laurent polynomial.

Abstract:Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, assume that $\mathscr{C}=\{C_1,C_2,\ldots, C_q\}$ is a clique cover of $G$ and $U$ is a subset of $V(H)$. We introduce a new graph operation called the clique cover product, denoted by $G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U$, as follows: for each clique $C_i\in \mathscr{C}$, add a copy of the graph $H$ and join every vertex of $C_i$ to every vertex of $U$. We prove that the independence polynomial of $G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U$ $$I(G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U;x)=I^q(H;x)I(G;\frac{xI(H-U;x)}{I(H;x)}),$$ which generalizes some known results on independence polynomials of corona and rooted products of graphs obtained by Gutman and Rosenfeld, respectively. Based on this formula, we show that the clique cover product of some special graphs preserves symmetry, unimodality, log-concavity or reality of zeros of independence polynomials. As applications we derive several known facts in a unified manner and solve some unimodality conjectures and problems.

Abstract:Given two graphs G and H, assume that C={C1,C2,…,Cq} is a clique cover of G and U is a subset of V(H). We introduce a new graph operation called the clique cover product, denoted by GC⋆HU, as follows: for each clique Ci∈C, add a copy of the graph H and join every vertex of Ci to every vertex of U. We prove that the independence polynomial of GC⋆HUI(GC⋆HU;x)=[I(H;x)]qI(G;xI(H−U;x)I(H;x)), which generalizes some known results on independence polynomials of the compound graph introduced by Song, Staton and Wei, the corona and rooted products of graphs obtained by Gutman and Rosenfeld, respectively. Based on this formula, we show that the clique cover product of some graphs preserves symmetry, unimodality, log-concavity or reality of zeros of independence polynomials. As applications we derive several known facts and solve some open unimodality conjectures and problems in a simple and unified manner.

Abstract:The ordinary generating function of the number of complete subgraphs (cliques) of $G$, denoted by $C(G,x)$, is called the The clique polynomial of the graph $G$. In this paper, we first introduce some \emph{clique} incidence matrices associated by a simple graph $G$ as a generalization of the classical vertex-edge incidence matrix of $G$. Then, using these clique incidence matrices, we obtain two clique-counting identities that can be used for deriving two combinatorial formulas for the first and the second derivatives of clique polynomials. Finally, we conclude the paper with several open questions and conjectures about possible extensions of our main results for higher derivatives of clique polynomials.

Abstract:Partial cubes are the graphs which can be embedded into hypercubes. The cube polynomial of a graph G is a counting polynomial of induced hypercubes of G , which is defined as C(G,x)≔∑i⩾0αi(G)xi , where αi(G) is the number of induced i ‐cubes (hypercubes of dimension i ) of G . The clique polynomial of G is defined as Cl(G,x)≔∑i⩾0ai(G)xi , where ai(G) (i⩾1 ) is the number of i ‐cliques in G and a0(G)=1 . Equivalently, Cl(G,x) is exactly the independence polynomial of the complement G ̄ of G . The crossing graph G# of a partial cube G is the graph whose vertices are corresponding to the Θ ‐classes of G , and two Θ ‐classes are adjacent in G# if and only if they cross in G . In the present paper, we prove that for a partial cube G , C(G,x)⩽Cl(G#,x+1) and the equality holds if and only if G is a median graph. Since every graph can be represented as the crossing graph of a median graph, the above necessary‐and‐sufficient result shows that the study on the cube polynomials of median graphs can be transformed to the one on the clique polynomials of general graphs (equivalently, on the independence polynomials of their complements). In addition, we disprove the conjecture that the cube polynomials of median graphs are unimodal.

A note on the lacking polynomial of the complete bipartite graph

Abstract:The lacking polynomial is a graph polynomial introduced by Chan, Marckert, and Selig in 2013 that is closely related to the Tutte polynomial of a graph. It arose by way of a generalization of the Abelian sandpile model and is essentially the generating function of the level statistic on the set of recurrent configurations, called stochastically recurrent states, for that model. In this note we consider the lacking polynomial of the complete bipartite graph. We classify the stochastically recurrent states of the stochastic sandpile model on the complete bipartite graphs $K_{2,n}$ and $K_{m,2}$ where the sink is always an element of the set counted by the first index. We use these characterizations to give explicit formulae for the lacking polynomials of these graphs. Log-concavity of the sequence of coefficients of these two lacking polynomials is proven, and we conjecture log-concavity holds for this general class of graphs.

Abstract:The ordinary generating function of the number of complete subgraphs of $G$ is called a clique polynomial of $G$ and is denoted by $C(G,x)$. A real root of $C(G,x)$ is called a clique root of the graph $G$. Hajiabolhasan and Mehrabadi showed that the clique polynomial has always a real root in the interval $[-1,0)$. Moreover, they showed that the class of triangle-free graphs has only clique roots. Here, we generalize their result by showing that the class of $K_4$-free chordal graphs has also only clique roots. Moreover, we show that this class has always a clique root $-1$. We finally conclude the paper with several important questions and conjectures.

A note on the alternating number of independent sets in a graph

Abstract:The independence polynomial of a graph $G$ evaluated at $-1$, denoted here as $I(G;-1)$, has arisen in a variety of different areas of mathematics and theoretical physics as an object of interest. Engström used discrete Morse theory to prove that $\left|I(G;-1)\right|\leq 2^{\phi(G)}$ where $\phi(G)$ is the decycling number of $G$, i.e., the minimum number of vertices needed to be deleted from $G$ so that the remaining graph is acyclic. Here, we improve Engström's bound by showing $\left|I(G;-1)\right|\leq 2^{\phi_3(G)}$ where $\phi_3(G)$ is the minimum number of vertices needed to be deleted from $G$ so that the resulting graph contains no induced cycles whose length is divisible by $3$. We also note that this bound is not just sharp but that every value in the range given by the bound is attainable by some connected graph.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the class of graphs Gm,n that have the same degree sequence as two disjoint cliques Km and Kn, as well as the class G ̄m,n of the complements of such graphs. The problems of finding a maximum clique and a maximum independent set are NP-hard on Gm,n. Therefore, looking for upper and lower bounds for the clique and independence numbers of such graphs is a challenging task. In this article, we obtain such bounds, as well as other related results. In particular, we consider the class of regular graphs, which are degree-equivalent to arbitrarily many identical cliques, as well as such graphs of bounded degree.

Abstract:We give a minimal counterexample for a conjecture of Ross and Yong (2015) which proposes a K-Kohnert rule for Grothendieck polynomials. We conjecture a revised version of this rule. We then prove both rules hold in the $321$-avoiding case.

Exact values and improved bounds on the clique number of cyclotomic graphs

Abstract:Let $q$ be an odd power of a prime $p$, and $S \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$ such that $S=-S$ and $S/S \neq \mathbb{F}_q^*$. We show that the clique number of the Cayley graph $\operatorname{Cay}(\mathbb{F}_q^+,S)$ is at most $\sqrt{|S/S|}+\sqrt{q/p}$, improving the best-known $\sqrt{q}$ upper bound for many families of such graphs substantially. Such a new bound is strongest for cyclotomic graphs and in particular, it implies the first nontrivial upper bound on the clique number of all generalized Paley graphs of non-square order, extending the work of Hanson and Pertidis. Moreover, our new bound is asymptotically sharp for an infinite family of generalized Paley graphs, and we further discover the first nontrivial family among them for which the clique number can be exactly determined. We also obtain a new lower bound on the number of directions determined by a large Cartesian product in the affine Galois plane $AG(2,q)$, which is sharp for infinite families.

Clique Is Hard on Average for Sherali-Adams with Bounded Coefficients

Abstract:We prove that Sherali-Adams with polynomially bounded coefficients requires proofs of size $n^{\Omega(d)}$ to rule out the existence of an $n^{\Theta(1)}$-clique in Erdős-Rényi random graphs whose maximum clique is of size $d\leq 2\log n$. This lower bound is tight up to the multiplicative constant in the exponent. We obtain this result by introducing a technique inspired by pseudo-calibration which may be of independent interest. The technique involves defining a measure on monomials that precisely captures the contribution of a monomial to a refutation. This measure intuitively captures progress and should have further applications in proof complexity.

Abstract:We raise some questions about graph polynomials, highlighting concepts and phenomena that may merit consideration in the development of a general theory. Our questions are mainly of three types: When do graph polynomials have reduction relations (simple linear recursions based on local operations), perhaps in a wider class of combinatorial objects? How many levels of reduction relations does a graph polynomial need in order to express it in terms of trivial base cases? For a graph polynomial, how are properties such as equivalence and factorisation reflected in the structure of a graph? We illustrate our discussion with a variety of graph polynomials and other invariants. This leads us to reflect on the historical origins of graph polynomials. We also introduce some new polynomials based on partial colourings of graphs and establish some of their basic properties.

Abstract:This write-up contains some minor results and notes related to our work [HQ15] (some of them already known in the literature). In particular, it shows the following: - We show that a graph with polynomial expansion have sublinear separators. - We show that hereditary sublinear separators imply that a graph have small divisions. - We show a natural condition on a set of segments, such that they have low density. This might be of independent interest in trying to define a realistic input model for a set of segments. Unlike the previous two results, this is new. A note on the Independent domination polynomial of zero divisor graph of rings

Abstract:In this note we consider the independent domination polynomial problem along with their unimodal and log-concave properties which were earlier studied by Gürsoy, Ülker and Gürsoy (Soft Comp. 2022). We show that the independent domination polynomial of zero divisor graphs of $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ for $n\in \{ pq, p^{2}q, pqr, p^{\alpha}\}$ where $p,q,r$ are primes with $2<p<q<r$ are not unimodal thereby contradicting the main result of Gürsoy, Ülker and Gürsoy \cite{gursoy}. Besides the authors show that the zero of the independent domination polynomial of these graphs have only real zero and used concept of Newton's inequalities to establish the log-concave property for the afore said polynomials. We show that these polynomials have complex zeros and the technique of Newton's inequalities are not applicable. Finally, by definition of log-concave, we prove that these polynomials are log-concave and fix the flaws in Theorem 10 of Gürsoy, Ülker and Gürsoy \cite{gursoy}.

Abstract:Many graph polynomials, such as the Tutte polynomial, the interlace polynomial and the matching polynomial, have both a recursive definition and a defining subset expansion formula. In this paper we present a general, logic-based framework which gives a precise meaning to recursive definitions of graph polynomials. We then prove that in this framework every recursive definition of a graph polynomial can be converted into a subset expansion formula.
