Abstract:We give a minimal counterexample for a conjecture of Ross and Yong (2015) which proposes a K-Kohnert rule for Grothendieck polynomials. We conjecture a revised version of this rule. We then prove both rules hold in the $321$-avoiding case.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number with $p\equiv 1\mod 4$, let $\varepsilon>1$ be the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1+\sqrt{p}}{2}]$ and let $x$ and $y$ be the unique nonnegative integers with $\varepsilon=x+y\frac{1+\sqrt{p}}{2}$. The Ankeny-Artin-Chowla-Conjecture states that $p$ is not a divisor of $y$. In this note, we provide and discuss a counterexample to this conjecture.

Abstract:In his classical paper [5], Koornwinder studied a family of orthogonal polynomials of two variables, derived from symmetric polynomials. This family possesses a rare property that orthogonal polynomials of degree $n$ have $n(n+1)/2$ real common zeros, which leads to important examples in the theory of minimal cubature rules. This paper aims to give an account of the minimal cubature rules of two variables and examples originating from Koornwinder polynomials, and we will also provide further examples.

Abstract:We use algebraic methods in statistical mechanics to represent a multi-parameter class of polynomials in severable variables as partition functions of a new family of solvable lattice models. The class of polynomials, defined by A.N. Kirillov, is derived from the largest class of divided difference operators satisfying the braid relations of Cartan type $A$. It includes as specializations Schubert, Grothendieck, and dual-Grothendieck polynomials among others. In particular, our results prove positivity conjectures of Kirillov for the subfamily of Hecke--Grothendieck polynomials, while the larger family is shown to exhibit rare instances of negative coefficients.

A variant of the Erdős-Gyárfás problem for $K_8$

Abstract:Recently, Alon initiated the study of graph codes and their linear variants in analogy to the study of error correcting codes in theoretical computer science. Alon related the maximum density of a linear graph code which avoids images of a small graph $H$ to the following variant of the Erdős-Gyárfás problem on edge-colourings of $K_n$. A copy of $H$ in an edge-colouring of $K_n$ is even-chromatic if each colour occupies an even number of edges in the copy. We seek an edge-colouring of $K_n$ using $n^{o(1)}$ colours such that there are no even-chromatic copies of $H$. Such an edge-colouring is conjectured to exist for all cliques $K_t$ with an even number of edges. To date, edge-colourings satisfying this property have been constructed for $K_4$ and $K_5$. We construct an edge-colouring using $n^{o(1)}$ colours which avoids even-chromatic copies of $K_8$. This was the smallest open case of the above conjecture, as $K_6, K_7$ each has an odd number of edges. We also study a stronger condition on edge-colourings, where for each copy of $H$, there is a colour occupying exactly one edge in the copy. We conjecture that an edge-colouring using $n^{o(1)}$ colours and satisfying this stronger requirement exists for all cliques $K_t$ regardless of the parity of the number of its edges. We construct edge-colourings satisfying this stronger property for $K_4$ and $K_5$. These constructions also improve upon the number of colours needed for the original problem of avoiding even-chromatic copies of $K_4$ and $K_5$.

Abstract:Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger, are certain $K$-theory representatives for Schubert varieties. Symplectic Grothendieck polynomials, described more recently by Wyser and Yong, represent the $K$-theory classes of orbit closures for the complex symplectic group acting on the complete flag variety. We prove a transition formula for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials and study their stable limits. We show that each of the $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse arises from a limiting procedure applied to symplectic Grothendieck polynomials representing certain "Grassmannian" orbit closures.

Abstract:We establish combinatorial and inductive formulas for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials associated to covexillary elements in classical types, extending results of Boe, Lascoux-Schützenberger, Sankaran-Vanchinathan, and Zelevinsky for Grassmannians of classical types. The proof uses intersection cohomology theory and the isomorphism of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties from Anderson-Ikeda-Jeon-Kawago.

Abstract:Following their resolution of the Erdős $B+B+t$ problem, Kra Moreira, Richter, and Robertson posed a number of questions and conjectures related to infinite configurations in positive density subsets of the integers and other amenable groups. We give a negative answer to several of these questions and conjectures by producing families of counterexamples based on a construction of Ernst Straus.

Abstract:P. Erdős conjectured in 1962 that on the ring $\mathbb{Z}$, every set of $n$ congruence classes in $\mathbb{Z}$ that covers the first $2^n$ posotive integers also covers the ring $\mathbb{Z}$. This conjecture was first confirmed in 1970 by R. B. Crittenden and C. L. Vanden Eynden. Later, in 2019, P. Balister, B. Bollobás, R. Morris, J. Sahasrabudhe, and M. Tiba provided a more transparent proof. In this paper we folllow the approach by R. B. Crittenden and C. L. Vanden Eynden and prove the generalized Erdős' conjecture in the setting of polynomial rings over finite fields. We prove that every set of $n$ cosets of ideals in $\mathbb F_q[x]$ that covers all polynomials whose degree is less than $n$ covers the ring $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$

An Algebraic Approach to the Goldbach and Polignac Conjectures

Abstract:This paper will give both the necessary and sufficient conditions required to find a counter-example to the Goldbach Conjecture by using an algebraic approach where no knowledge of the gaps between prime numbers is needed. To eliminate ambiguity the set of natural numbers, $\mathbb{N}$, will include zero throughout this paper. It will be shown there exists a counter-example to the Goldbach Conjecture, given by $2a$ where $a \in \mathbb{N}_{> 3}$, if and only if for each prime $p_i < a$ there exists some unique $q_i, \alpha_i \in \mathbb{N}$ where $a < q_i < 2a$ and $2a = q_i + p_i$ along with the condition that $\prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}q_i = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$. A substitution of $q_i = 2a - p_i$ for each $q_i$ from each sum gives the product relationship $\prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}(2a - p_i) = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$. Therefore, if a counter-example exists to the Goldbach Conjecture, then there exists a mapping $\mathcal{G}_-:\mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}$ where $$\mathcal{G}_-(z) = \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}(z - p_i) - \prod_{i = 1}^{\pi(a)}p_i^{\alpha_i}$$ and $\mathcal{G}_-(2a) = 0$. A proof of the Goldbach Conjecture will be given utilizing Hensel's Lemma to show $2a$ must be of the form $2a = p_i^{\alpha_i} + p_i$ for all primes up to $a$ when $a > 3$. However, this leads to contradiction since $2a < a\#$ for all $a > 4$. A similar method will be employed to give the necessary and sufficient conditions when an even number is not the difference of two primes with one prime being less than that even number. These proofs will have implications for proving the Polignac Conjecture.

Grothendieck inequalities characterize converses to the polynomial method

Abstract:A surprising 'converse to the polynomial method' of Aaronson et al. (CCC'16) shows that any bounded quadratic polynomial can be computed exactly in expectation by a 1-query algorithm up to a universal multiplicative factor related to the famous Grothendieck constant. Here we show that such a result does not generalize to quartic polynomials and 2-query algorithms, even when we allow for additive approximations. We also show that the additive approximation implied by their result is tight for bounded bilinear forms, which gives a new characterization of the Grothendieck constant in terms of 1-query quantum algorithms. Along the way we provide reformulations of the completely bounded norm of a form, and its dual norm.

Abstract:Chow rings of flag varieties have bases of Schubert cycles $\sigma_u$, indexed by permutations. A major problem of algebraic combinatorics is to give a positive combinatorial formula for the structure constants of this basis. The celebrated Littlewood-Richardson rules solve this problem for special products $\sigma_u \cdot \sigma_v$ where $u$ and $v$ are $p$-Grassmannian permutations. Building on work of Wyser, we introduce backstable clans to prove such a rule for the problem of computing the product $\sigma_u \cdot \sigma_v$ when $u$ is $p$-inverse Grassmannian and $v$ is $q$-inverse Grassmannian. By establishing several new families of linear relations among structure constants, we further extend this result to obtain a positive combinatorial rule for $\sigma_u \cdot \sigma_v$ in the case that $u$ is covered in weak Bruhat order by a $p$-inverse Grassmannian permutation and $v$ is a $q$-inverse Grassmannian permutation.

Abstract:Let be a sequence of natural numbers. For a graph G, let denote the number of colourings of the edges of G with colours such that, for every , the edges of colour c contain no clique of order . Write to denote the maximum of over all graphs G on n vertices. There are currently very few known exact (or asymptotic) results for this problem, posed by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974. We prove some new exact results for : (i) A sufficient condition on which guarantees that every extremal graph is a complete multipartite graph, which systematically recovers all existing exact results. (ii) Addressing the original question of Erdős and Rothschild, in the case of length , the unique extremal graph is the complete balanced -partite graph, with colourings coming from Hadamard matrices of order . (iii) In the case , for which the sufficient condition in (i) does not hold, for , the unique extremal graph is complete k-partite with one part of size less than k and the other parts as equal in size as possible.

Abstract:As a significant variation of Ramsey numbers, the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ refers to the smallest positive integer $r$ such that, by coloring the edges of $K_r$ with at most $k$ colors, there exists either a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to $H$ or a rainbow triangle. Mao, Wang, Magnant, and Schiermeyer [Discrete Math., 2023], Song, Wei, Zhang, and Zhao [Discrete Math., 2020], and Zhao and Wei [Discrete Appl. Math., 2021] each proposed one conjecture on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for fans, wheels, and kipases, respectively. We establish new lower bounds that disprove all three conjectures. Su and Liu [Graphs Combin., 2022] studied the Gallai-Ramsey-full property of graphs and conjectured that a graph is Ramsey-full if and only if it is Gallai-Ramsey-full. We present two classes of graphs that are Ramsey-full, but neither is Gallai-Ramsey-full.

Abstract:We found a counterexample to the conjecture of Karvatskyi and Pratsiovytyi concerning the topological type of the achievement set of an intermediate series (Proceedings of the International Geometry Center, 2023. <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.15673/pigc.v16i3.2519" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>). This conjecture is based on an analogy with the squeeze theorem from calculus. We also proposed an improved version of the conjecture, which this counterexample does not refute.
