Abstract:We define L-functions for the class of real-analytic modular forms recently introduced by F. Brown. We establish their main properties and construct the analogue of period polynomial in cases of special interest, including those of modular iterated integrals.

Abstract:We introduce an $L$-series associated to real-analytic modular forms which transform with weight $(r,s)\in\mathbb{Z}^2$ under $\Gamma_0(N)$. These $L$-series satisfy a functional equation and converse theorem. We also discuss examples of such forms, including real analytic Eisenstein series and modular iterated integrals of higher level. We focus on the $L$-series for a class of forms including Francis Brown's length-one modular iterated integrals $\mathcal{MI}^!_1$.

Abstract:Given the L-series of a half-integral weight cusp form, we construct a cohomology class with coefficients in a finite dimensional vector space in a way that parallels the Eichler cohomology in the integral weight case. We also define a lift of half-integral weight cusp forms to integral weight modular forms that is compatible with the $L$-series of the respective forms.

Abstract:This is a report for the author's talk in ICM-2018. Motivated by the formulas of Gross--Zagier and Waldspurger, we review conjectures and theorems on automorphic period integrals, special cycles on Shimura varieties, and their connection to central values of L-functions and their derivatives. We focus on the global Gan--Gross--Prasad conjectures, their arithmetic versions and some variants in the author's joint work with Rapoport and Smithling. We discuss the approach of relative trace formulas and the arithmetic fundamental lemma conjecture. In the function field setting, Z. Yun and the author obtain a formula for higher order derivatives of L-functions in terms of special cycles on the moduli space of Drinfeld Shtukas.

Formal deformations of modular forms and multiple L-values

Abstract:We relate analytically defined deformations of modular curves and modular forms from the literature to motivic periods via cohomological descriptions of deformation theory. Leveraging cohomological vanishing results, we prove the existence and essential uniqueness of deformations, which we make constructive via established Lie algebraic arguments and a notion of formal logarithmic deformations. Further, we construct a canonical and a totally holomorphic canonical universal family of deformations of modular forms of all weights, which we obtain from the canonical cocycle associated with periods on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}$. Our uniqueness statement shows that non-critical multiple $\mathrm{L}$-values, which appear in our deformations but are a priori non-geometric, are genuinely linked to deformations. Our work thus suggests a new geometric perspective on them.

Abstract:A space of modular iterated integrals sits inside the space of real analytic modular forms. We present a theorem for producing length three modular iterated integrals which are not simply combinations of real analytic Eisenstein series; each function has an associated Laplace-eigenvalue equation. This can be viewed as an extension of the length two case recently given by F. Brown, a review of which is included in this paper. We discuss how modular iterated integrals could help understand the modular graph functions which arise in string perturbation theory.

Abstract:For vector-valued Maass cusp forms for~$SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with real weight~$k\in\mathbb{R}$ and spectral parameter $s\in\mathbb{C}$, $\mathrm{Re} s\in (0,1)$, $s\not\equiv \pm k/2$ mod $1$, we propose a notion of vector-valued period functions, and we establish a linear isomorphism between the spaces of Maass cusp forms and period functions by means of a cohomological approach. The period functions are a generalization of those for the classical Maass cusp forms, being solutions of a finite-term functional equation or, equivalently, eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of a transfer operator deduced from the geodesic flow on the modular surface. We apply this result to deduce a notion of period functions and related linear isomorphism for Jacobi Maass forms of weight $k+1/2$ for the semi-direct product of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with the integer points $Hei(\mathbb{Z})$ of the Heisenberg group.

Here $\Pi$ is an irreducible regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb A)$ of symplectic type and $\chi$ is a finite order automorphic character of $\mathrm{GL}_1(\mathbb A)$, with $\mathbb A$ is the ring of adeles of a number field $\mathrm k$.

Non-holomorphic modular forms from zeta generators

Abstract:We study non-holomorphic modular forms built from iterated integrals of holomorphic modular forms for SL$(2,\mathbb Z)$ known as equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals. A special subclass of them furnishes an equivalent description of the modular graph forms appearing in the low-energy expansion of string amplitudes at genus one. Notably the Fourier expansion of modular graph forms contains single-valued multiple zeta values. We deduce the appearance of products and higher-depth instances of multiple zeta values in equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals, and ultimately modular graph forms, from the appearance of simpler odd Riemann zeta values. This analysis relies on so-called zeta generators which act on certain non-commutative variables in the generating series of the iterated integrals. From an extension of these non-commutative variables we incorporate iterated integrals involving holomorphic cusp forms into our setup and use them to construct the modular completion of triple Eisenstein integrals. Our work represents a fully explicit realisation of the modular graph forms within Brown's framework of equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals and reveals structural analogies between single-valued period functions appearing in genus zero and one string amplitudes.

Abstract:We consider some analytic behaviors (convexity, monotonicity and number of critical points) of the period function of period annuli of the potential system x¨+g(x)=0 and focus on the case when g(x) is a polynomial whose roots are all real. The main contributions of this paper are twofold: (i) analytic behaviors are given for the period functions of period annuli surrounding one or more and simple or degenerate equilibria; (ii) as a nontrivial application of the general conclusions in (i), a purely analytical and shorter proof is provided for a result for the case degg=4 recently obtained by Chengzhi Li and Kening Lu with some help of computer algebra [Chengzhi Li, Kening Lu, The period function of hyperelliptic Hamiltonian of degree 5 with real critical points, Nonlinearity 21 (2008) 465–483].
New phenomena arising from L-invariants of modular forms

Abstract:This article explains how to practically compute L-invariants of p-new eigenforms using p-adic L-series and exceptional zero phenomena. As proof of the utility, we compiled a data set consisting of over 150,000 L-invariants. We analyze qualitative and quantitative features found in the data. This includes conjecturing a statistical law for the distribution of the valuations of L-invariants in a fixed level as the weights of eigenforms approach infinity. One novel point of our investigation is that the algorithm is sensitive to compiling data for fixed Galois representations modulo p. Therefore, we explain new perspectives on L-invariants that are related to Galois representations. We propose understanding the structures in our data through the lens of deformation rings and moduli stacks of Galois representations.

Abstract:Periods are defined as integrals of semialgebraic functions defined over the rationals. Periods form a countable ring not much is known about. Examples are given by taking the antiderivative of a power series which is algebraic over the polynomial ring over the rationals and evaluate it at a rational number. We follow this path and close these algebraic power series under taking iterated antiderivatives and nearby algebraic and geometric operations. We obtain a system of rings of power series whose coefficients form a countable real closed field. Using techniques from o-minimality we are able to show that every period belongs to this field. In the setting of o-minimality we define exponential integrated algebraic numbers and show that exponential periods and the Euler constant is an exponential integrated algebraic number. Hence they are a good candiate for a natural number system extending the period ring and containing important mathematical constants.

Transcendence of ${}_3F_2(1)$ Hypergeometric Series and $L$-values of Modular Forms

Abstract:We examine the families of hypergeometric series associated to a special class of modular hypergeometric Galois representations recently studied by Allen, Grove, Long, and Tu. The underlying motives allow us to express a special $L$-value of the corresponding modular form in terms of these hypergeometric series. We use extra symmetries coming from the underlying modular forms to study the transcendence of families of periods, which have the form ${}_3F_2(1)$, on hypergeometric surfaces. For several hypergeometric surfaces with four periods, we show that the vector space generated by these elements has dimension at most 2. As an application of our results, we utilize a classical formula of ${}_3F_2(1)$ series due to Kummer to find relations between $L$-values of modular forms that differ by an even twist, as predicted in a theorem of Shimura.

Abstract:In 1961, Chandrasekharan and Narasimhan showed that for a large class of Dirichlet series the functional equation and two types of arithmetical identities are equivalent. In 1992, Hawkins and Knopp proved a Hecke correspondence theorem for modular integrals with rational period function on theta group. Analogous to Chandrasekharan and Narasimhan, in 2015 Sister Ann M. Heath has shown that the functional equation in Hawkins and Knopp context and two type of arithmetical identities are equivalent. She considered the functional equation and showed its equivalence to two arithmetical identities associated with entire modular cusp integrals involving rational period functions for the full modular group. In this paper we extend the results of Sister Ann M. Heath to entire automorphic integrals involving rational period functions on discrete Hecke group.

Abstract:In recent years L-functions and their analytic properties have assumed a central role in number theory and automorphic forms. In this expository article, we describe the two major methods for proving the analytic continuation and functional equations of $L$-functions: the method of integral representations, and the method of Fourier expansions of Eisenstein series. Special attention is paid to technical properties, such as boundedness in vertical strips; these are essential in applying the converse theorem, a powerful tool that uses analytic properties of L-functions to establish cases of Langlands functoriality conjectures. We conclude by describing striking recent results which rest upon the analytic properties of L-functions.

The Riemann Hypothesis for period polynomials of cusp forms

Abstract:We consider the period polynomials $r_f(z)$ associated with cusp forms $f$ of weight $k$ on all of $\mathrm{SL}_2\left( \mathbb{Z} \right)$, which are generating functions for the critical $L$-values of the modular $L$-function associated to $f$. In 2014, El-Guindy and Raji proved that if $f$ is an eigenform, then $r_f(z)$ satisfies a ``Riemann hypothesis" in the sense that all its zeros lie on the natural boundary of its functional equation. We show that this phenomenon is not restricted to eigenforms, and we provide large natural infinite families of cusp forms whose period polynomials almost always satisfy the Riemann hypothesis. For example, we show that for weights $k \geq 120$, linear combinations of eigenforms with positive coefficients always have unimodular period polynomials.
