Abstract:We relate analytically defined deformations of modular curves and modular forms from the literature to motivic periods via cohomological descriptions of deformation theory. Leveraging cohomological vanishing results, we prove the existence and essential uniqueness of deformations, which we make constructive via established Lie algebraic arguments and a notion of formal logarithmic deformations. Further, we construct a canonical and a totally holomorphic canonical universal family of deformations of modular forms of all weights, which we obtain from the canonical cocycle associated with periods on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}$. Our uniqueness statement shows that non-critical multiple $\mathrm{L}$-values, which appear in our deformations but are a priori non-geometric, are genuinely linked to deformations. Our work thus suggests a new geometric perspective on them.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the deformation theory of modular forms and its connection with multiple L - values. Specifically: 1. **Relationship between Deformation Theory and Period Integrals**: - The paper explores how the analytic deformations of modular curves and modular forms are related to motivic periods through homological descriptions. This involves understanding the nature and uniqueness of these deformations through the deformation theory in homology theory. 2. **Construction of Deformations**: - The authors prove the existence and essential uniqueness of these deformations and, by using the known Lie algebra methods and the concept of formal logarithmic deformations, give a specific construction method. They construct a canonical, holomorphic universal deformation family applicable to modular forms of all weights. 3. **Geometric Interpretation of Non - critical Multiple L - values**: - The paper also explores whether the non - critical multiple L - values that appear during the deformation process have geometric significance. Although these values formally lack a geometric interpretation, they do exhibit properties related to the true period values (given by critical multiple L - values) in low - degree deformations. 4. **Systematic Explanation of Bogo's Work**: - The paper systematically explains Bogo's results in the deformation of modular curves, especially the appearance of period values in these deformations. Through the perspective of homological deformation theory, the authors provide a deeper understanding of Bogo's work. ### Main Contributions - **Existence and Uniqueness**: Prove that the deformations of modular forms exist and are essentially unique. - **Construction Method**: Provide a specific method for constructing deformations of modular forms through homology theory and Lie algebra methods. - **Universal Deformation Family**: Construct a canonical, holomorphic universal deformation family applicable to modular forms of all weights. - **Connection of Non - critical Multiple L - values**: Reveal the importance of non - critical multiple L - values in the deformation theory and suggest that they may have new geometric origins. ### Key Questions - **Why do period values appear in the deformations of modular curves?** - **Are the assumptions of genus 0 and weight 1 cusp forms necessary in the theory?** - **Is the appearance of non - critical multiple L - values a product of Bogo's construction?** ### Conclusion - The paper not only solves the above - mentioned problems but also provides a new perspective for future research, especially regarding the geometric interpretation of non - critical multiple L - values.
