Abstract:In this paper, we establish the uniquely existence of the global mild solution to the nematic liquid crystal equations in Besov-Morrey spaces. Some self-similarity and large time behavior of the global mild solution are also investigated.

Abstract:We investigate compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in three-dimensional (3D) bounded domains with slip boundary condition for velocity and Neumann boundary condition for orientation field. By applying piecewise-estimate method and delicate analysis based on the effective viscous flux and vorticity, we derive the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions provided that the initial total energy is suitably small. Our result is an extension of the works of Huang-Wang-Wen (J. Differential Equations 252: 2222-2265, 2012) and Li-Xu-Zhang (J. Math. Fluid Mech. 20: 2105-2145, 2018), where the local strong solutions in three dimensions and the global strong solutions for 3D Cauchy problem were established, respectively. Moreover, it also shows that blow up mechanism for local strong solutions obtained by Huang-Wang-Wen (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 204: 285-311, 2012) cannot occur if the initial total energy is sufficiently small.

Abstract:The work deals with the Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals on the whole space, the half-space and on exterior domains with smooth boundary. The crystal orientation is described by a unit vector that is a small perturbation of a fixed constant vector. We prove, through a combination of energy method with dispersive a priori estimates, a local existence and a global existence for small initial data by a contraction argument asking low regularity assumptions on the initial condition.

Abstract:Consider a quasi-linear system of two Klein–Gordon equations with masses m1, m2. We prove that when m1≠2m2 and m2≠2m1, such a system has global solutions for small, smooth, compactly supported Cauchy data. This extends a result proved by Sunagawa (J. Differential Equations 192 (2) (2003) 308) in the semi-linear case. Moreover, we show that global existence holds true also when m1=2m2 and a convenient null condition is satisfied by the nonlinearities.

Abstract:We consider a full Navier-Stokes and $Q$-tensor system for incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In the two dimensional periodic case, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions that are uniformly bounded in time. This result is obtained without any smallness assumption on the physical parameter $\xi$ that measures the ratio between tumbling and aligning effects of a shear flow exerting over the liquid crystal directors. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of asymptotic limit for each global strong solution as time goes to infinity and provide an uniform estimate on the convergence rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the global well-posedness and long-time behavior of the general Ericksen--Leslie system in 2D under a magnetic field. The PDE system consists of Navier--Stokes equations and kinematic transport equations for the orientations of liquid crystal molecules. For liquid crystal molecules with fixed modulus in torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, we prove the well-posedness of steady-state solutions in order to prove that there exist global strong solutions to the general Ericksen--Leslie system, which are smooth away from the initial time, and the long-time behavior of the solutions is classified according to the $\mathbb{T}^2$ boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the existence of global in time weak solutions for an evolutionary PDE system modelling nonisothermal Landau-de Gennes nematic liquid crystal (LC) flows in three dimensions of space. In our model, the incompressible Navier-Stokes system for the macroscopic velocity $\vu$ is coupled to a nonlinear convective parabolic equation describing the evolution of the Q-tensor $\QQ$, namely a tensor-valued variable representing the normalized second order moments of the probability distribution function of the LC molecules. The effects of the (absolute) temperature $\vt$ are prescribed in the form of an energy balance identity complemented with a global entropy production inequality. Compared to previous contributions, we can consider here the physically realistic singular configuration potential $f$ introduced by Ball and Majumdar. This potential gives rise to severe mathematical difficulties since it introduces, in the Q-tensor equation, a term which is at the same time singular in $\QQ$ and degenerate in $\vt$. To treat it a careful analysis of the properties of $f$, particularly of its blow-up rate, is carried out.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of global classical solutions to hydrodynamical systems modeling the nematic liquid crystal flows under kinematic transports for molecules of different shapes. The coupling system consists of Navier–Stokes equations and kinematic transport equations for the molecular orientations. We prove the convergence of global solutions to single steady states as time tends to infinity as well as estimates on the convergence rate both in 2 D for arbitrary regular initial data and in 3 D for certain particular cases.

We first prove the existence and uniqueness of local strong solution. Furthermore, by taking Deborah number goes to zero and using the Hilbert expansion method, we present a rigorous derivation from the molecule-based Q-tensor theory to the Ericksen-Leslie theory.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the solvability of a Navier-Stokes/Q-tensor coupled system modeling the nematic liquid crystal flow on a bounded domain in three dimensional Euclidian space with strong anchoring boundary condition for the order parameter. We prove the existence of local in time strong solution to the system with the anisotropic elastic energy. The proof is based on mainly two ingredients: first, we show that the Euler-Lagrange operator corresponding to the Landau-de Gennes free energy with general elastic coefficients fulfills the strong Legendre condition. This result together with a higher order energy estimate leads to the well-posedness of the linearized system, and then a local in time solution of the original system which is regular in temporal variable follows via a fixed point argument. Secondly, the hydrodynamic part of the coupled system can be reformulated into a quasi-stationary Stokes type equation to which the regularity theory of the generalized Stokes system, and then a bootstrap argument can be applied to enhance the spatial regularity of the local in time solution.

Existence and uniqueness of the global strong solution are established in critical Besov spaces provided that the initial datum is close to an equilibrium state $(1,{\bf 0}, \hat{{\bf d}})$ with a constant vector $\hat{{\bf d}}\in S^2$. The global existence result is proved via the local well-posedness and uniform estimates for proper linearized systems with convective terms.

In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem for the Poiseuille flow of a hyperbolic-parabolic Ericksen–Leslie model of nematic liquid crystals in one space dimension. We consider a simplified system by restricting the Leslie coefficients to special cases such that some quantities are constants. Due to the quasilinearity, the solution of this model in general forms cusp singularity. We prove the global existence of a Hölder continuous solution, which may include cusp singularity, for initial-boundary value problems with different types of boundary conditions.
