Abstract:This short article presents explicit expressions for roots of a quartic equation that has all four real roots. Although a general expression for quartic roots is available on Wikipedia, an optimized and slightly shorter expression for only real roots is presented here.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish a rational iteration method which can be used as a root-finding algorithm for almost every polynomial. It has no nonrepelling extraneous fixed point in the complex plane and is generally convergent for both quadratic and cubic polynomials. Then some properties of this algorithm are given. By the aid of computer, we produce pictures of the Julia sets for the iterations of some polynomials. Numerical results show that it is a root-finding method with convergence order the same as Halley's method.

Abstract:The real roots of the cubic and quartic polynomials are studied geometrically with the help of their respective Siebeck--Marden--Northshield equilateral triangle and regular tetrahedron. The Viète trigonometric formulae for the roots of the cubic are established through the rotation of the triangle by variation of the free term of the cubic. A very detailed complete root classification for the quartic $x^4 + ax^3 + bx^2 + cx + d$ is proposed for which the conditions are imposed on the individual coefficients $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$. The maximum and minimum lengths of the interval containing the four real roots of the quartic are determined in terms of $a$ and $b$. The upper and lower root bounds for a quartic with four real roots are also found: no root can lie farther than $(\sqrt{3}/4)\sqrt{3a^2 - 8b}\, $ from $-a/4$. The real roots of the quartic are localized by finding intervals containing at most two roots. The end-points of these intervals depend on $a$ and $b$ and are roots of quadratic equations -- which makes this localization helpful for quartic equations with complicated parametric coefficients.

Abstract:The solution of the cubic equation has a century-long history; however, the usual presentation is geared towards applications in algebra and is somewhat inconvenient to use in optimization where frequently the main interest lies in real roots. In this note, we present the roots of the cubic in a form that makes them convenient to use and we also focus on information on the location of the real roots. Armed with this, we provide several applications in optimization where we compute Fenchel conjugates, proximal mappings and projections.

Abstract:According to the Abel-Ruffini theorem [1] and Galois theory [2], there is no solution in finite radicals to the general quintic equation. This article takes a different approach and proposes a new method to solve the quintic by iteration of radicals. But, the most intriguing result is an accurate algebraic formula for absolute and relative root approximation: |formula - root| < 0.00432 and |formula/root - 1| < 0.0251. We then expand some of the geometric properties discussed to construct a trigonometric algorithm that derives all roots.

Abstract:It appears that, along with many of my friends and colleagues, I had been brainwashed by the great and tragic lives of Abel and Galois to believe that no general formulas are possible for roots of equations higher than quartic. This seemed to be confirmed by the brilliant and arduous solution of the general quintic by Hermite. Yet, below we find a formula giving a root to any algebraic equation of degree 2-5 and any reduced equation (see below) of higher degree. This algorithm, which must have been familiar to Lagrange, resulted when I was working on a paper on the asymptotics of hypergeometric functions where Gauss' multiplication formula for the gamma function is used to reduce certain infinite series, and by a happy accident my copy of Whittaker and Watson opened at p. 133.

Abstract:The isolation intervals of the roots of the parametric quintic polynomial x5+a4x4+a3x3+a2x2+a1x+a0 are determined geometrically by the roots of two auxiliary quadratic polynomials: x2+a4x+a3 and a2x2+a1x+a0 . This graph is an example for the case with a4>0 , a3<0 , a2>0 , a1<0 . A method is proposed with which the locations of the roots of the monic symbolic quintic polynomial x5+a4x4+a3x3+a2x2+a1x+a0 can be determined using the roots of two resolvent quadratic polynomials: q1(x)=x2+a4x+a3 and q2(x)=a2x2+a1x+a0 , whose coefficients are exactly those of the quintic polynomial. The different cases depend on the coefficients of q1(x) and q2(x) and on some specific relationships between them. The method is illustrated with the full analysis of one of the possible cases. Some of the roots of the symbolic quintic equation for this case have their isolation intervals determined and, as this cannot be done for all roots with the help of quadratic equations only, finite intervals containing 1 or 3 roots, or 0 or 2 roots, or, rarely, 0, or 2, or 4 roots of the quintic are identified. Knowledge of the stationary points of the quintic lifts this indeterminacy and allows finding the isolation interval of each root. Separately, using the complete root classification of the quintic, one can also lift this indeterminacy. The method also allows to see how variation of the individual coefficients of the quintic affect its roots. No root finding iterations or any numerical approximations are used and no equations of degree higher than two are solved.

Abstract:Concerning quartics, two particular quantifier elimination (QE) problems of historical interests and practical values are studied. We solve the problems by the theory of complete discrimination systems and negative root discriminant sequences for polynomials that provide a method for real (positive/negative) and complex root classification for polynomials. The equivalent quantifier-free formulas are obtained mainly be hand and are simpler than those obtained automatically by previous methods or QE tools. Also, applications of the results to program verification and determination of positivity of symmetric polynomials are showed.

Abstract:The generic monic polynomial of degree N features N a priori arbitrary coefficients $c_m$ and N zeros $z_n$. In this paper we limit consideration to $N = 8$ and $N = 9$. We show that if the $N$ -- a priori arbitrary -- coefficients $c_m$ of these polynomials are appropriately defined -- as it were, a posteriori -- in terms of 6 arbitrary parameters, then the $N$ roots of these polynomials can be explicitly computed in terms of radicals of these 6 parameters. We also report the constraints on the N coefficients $c_m$ implied by the fact that they are so defined in terms of 6 arbitrary parameters; as well as the explicit determination of these 6 parameters in terms of the N coefficients $c_m$.

Abstract:In this article, we show that the quartic Diophantine equations $x^4 \pm pqy^4=\pm z^2$ and $ x^4 \pm pq y^4= \pm iz^2$ have only trivial solutions for some primes $p$ and $q$ satisfying conditions $ p \equiv 3 \pmod 8, ~ q \equiv 1 \pmod 8 ~\text{and}~ \displaystyle\legendre{p}{q} = -1$. Here we have found the torsion of the two families of elliptic curves to find the solutions of given Diophantine equations. Moreover, we also calculate the rank of these two families of elliptic curves over the Gaussian field $\mathbb{Q}(i)$.

Abstract:Real root finding of polynomial equations is a basic problem in computer algebra. This task is usually divided into two parts: isolation and refinement. In this paper, we propose two algorithms LZ1 and LZ2 to refine real roots of univariate polynomial equations. Our algorithms combine Newton's method and the secant method to bound the unique solution in an interval of a monotonic convex isolation (MCI) of a polynomial, and have quadratic and cubic convergence rates, respectively. To avoid the swell of coefficients and speed up the computation, we implement the two algorithms by using the floating-point interval method in Maple15 with the package intpakX. Experiments show that our methods are effective and much faster than the function RefineBox in the software Maple15 on benchmark polynomials.

Abstract:The isolation intervals of the real roots of the real symbolic monic cubic polynomial $p(x) = x^3 + a x^2 + b x + c\,\,$ are found in terms of simple functions of the coefficients of the polynomial (such as: $-a$, $-a/3$, $-c/b$, $\pm \sqrt{-b}$, when $b$ is negative), and the roots of some auxiliary quadratic equations whose coefficients are also simple functions of the coefficients of the cubic. All possible cases are presented with clear and very detailed diagrams. It is very easy to identify which of these diagrams is the relevant one for any given cubic equation and to read from it the isolation intervals of the real roots of the equation. A much-improved complete root classification, addressing the signs (together with giving the isolation intervals) of the individual roots, is also presented. No numerical approximations or root finding techniques are used. Instead of considering the discriminant of the cubic, criterion for the existence of a single real root or three real roots is found as conditions on the coefficients of the cubic, resulting from the roots of the auxiliary quadratic equations. It is also shown that, if a cubic equation has three real roots, then these lie in an interval $I$ such that $\sqrt{3}\sqrt{a^2/3 - b} \le I \le 2 \sqrt{a^2/3 - b}$, independent of $c$. A detailed algorithm for applying the method for isolation of the roots of the cubic is also given and it is illustrated through examples, including the full mathematical analysis of the cubic equation associated with the Rayleigh elastic waves and finding the isolation intervals of its real roots.
