Abstract:We show that a von Neumann regular ring with involution is directly finite provided that it admits a representation as a ring of endomorphisms (the involution given by taking adjoints) of a vector space endowed with a non-degenerate orthosymmetric sesquilinear form.

Abstract:Bruns and Roddy constructed a $3$-generated modular ortholattice $L$ which cannot be embedded into any complete modular ortholattice. Motivated by their approach, we use shift operators to construct a $*$-regular $*$-ring $R$ of endomorphisms of an inner product space (which can be chosen as the Hilbert space $\ell^2$) such that direct finiteness fails for $R$.

Abstract:For every partially ordered sets I, having a finite cofinal subset, and every field K we build a unital, locally matricial and hence unit-regular K-algebra B(I) such that the lattice of all its ideals is order isomorphic to the lattice of all lower subsets of I. We show that the Grothendieck group of B(I), with its natural partial order, is order isomorphic to the restricted Hahn power of Z by I; this gives a contribution to solve the Realization Problem for Dimension Groups with order-unit. Finally we show that the algebra B(I) has the following features: (a) B(I) is prime if and only if I is lower directed; (b) B(I) is primitive if and only if I has a coinitial chain; (c) B(I) is semiartinian if and only if I is artinian, in which the case I is order isomorphic to the primitive spectrum of B(I).

Abstract:Let $V$ be a finite rank vector space over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, and let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(V)$. If $V$ is a permutation representation of $G$, or more generally a monomial representation, we prove that the ring of invariants $(\operatorname{Sym}V)^G$ has finite Frobenius representation type. We also construct an example with $V$ a finite rank vector space over the algebraic closure of the function field ${\mathbb{F}_3}(t)$, and $G$ an elementary abelian subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(V)$, such that the invariant ring $(\operatorname{Sym}V)^G$ does not have finite Frobenius representation type.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a finite dimensional associative $\mathbb{K}$-algebra over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic zero. To $A$, we can associate its basic form that is given by a quiver $Q = (Q_0, Q_1)$ with an admissible ideal $R$. For a dimension vector $\beta$, we consider an irreducible component $\mathcal{C}$ of the module variety of $\beta$-dimensional representations of $A$. The reductive group ${\rm GL}_\beta(\mathbb{K}):= \prod_{i \in Q_0}{\rm GL}_{\beta_i}(\mathbb{K})$ acts on $\mathcal{C}$ by change of basis, and has a unique closed orbit. We consider the corresponding ring of semi-invariants ${\rm SI}(Q, \mathcal{C})$. We prove that if $\mathcal{C}$ is factorial and has maximal orbits of codimension one, then ${\rm SI}(Q, \mathcal{C})$ is a complete intersection and is not multiplicity free. If $\mathcal{C}$ is not factorial, then this conclusion does not necessarily hold. We present examples showing that the codimension of the complete intersection can be arbitrarily large. Finally, we interpret our results in the case of hereditary algebras.

Abstract:We study finiteness conditions on large tilting modules over arbitrary rings. We then turn to a hereditary artin algebra R and apply our results to the (infinite dimensional) tilting module L that generates all modules without preprojective direct summands. We show that the behaviour of L over its endomorphism ring determines the representation type of R. A similar result holds true for the (infinite dimensional) tilting module W that generates the divisible modules. Finally, we extend to the wild case some results on Baer modules and torsion-free modules proven in [AHT] for tame hereditary algebras.

Abstract:We give a number of constructions where inverse limits seriously degrade properties of regular rings, such as unit-regularity, diagonalisation of matrices, and finite stable rank. This raises the possibility of using inverse limits to answer the long standing Separativity Problem (in the negative).

Abstract:We obtain a Lie theoretic intrinsic characterization of the connected and simply connected solvable Lie groups whose regular representation is a factor representation. When this is the case, the corresponding von Neumann algebras are isomorphic to the hyperfinite II$_\infty$ factor, and every Casimir function is constant. We thus obtain a family of geometric models for the standard representation of that factor. Finally, we show that the regular representation of any connected and simply connected solvable Lie group with open coadjoint orbits is always of type I, though the group needs not be of type I, and include some relevant examples.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper, we provide a fairly complete description of a 2-torsion free simple ring R with involution f such that the skew traces relative to f of all elements of R form a commutative subset. In the remaining part, the results carried out earlier are put to work to delineate the structure of a simple Artinian ring R with involution f, which is equipped with a given non central submonoid M (= multiplicatively closed subset containing 1) preserved under f and under all inner automorphisms of R, and M is such that the skew traces of all elements of M form a commutative subset.

Abstract:For a ring $A$, we consider the question whether every bounded above cochain complex of injective $A$-modules which is acyclic is null-homotopic. We show that if $A$ is left and right noetherian and has a dualizing complex, then this implies that the finitistic dimension of $A$ is finite. In the appendix, Nakamura and Thompson show that the opposite holds over any ring. Our results give several new necessary and sufficient conditions for a ring to have finite finitistic dimension in a very general setting. Applications include a generalization of a recent result of Rickard about relations between unbounded derived categories and finitistic dimension, as well as several new characterizations of noetherian rings which satisfy the Gorenstein symmetry conjecture.

Abstract:Let R be a left coherent ring, (R)omega a Wakamatsu tilting module and S = End((R)omega) a right coherent ring. It is shown that the FP-injective dimensions of (R)omega and omega(S) are identical provided both of them are finite. It is also shown that in this case all finitely presented left R-modules (right S-modules) have special (perpendicular to)omega-precovers and special ((perpendicular to)omega)(perpendicular to)-preenvelopes.

Abstract:The rigidity degree of a generator-cogenerator determines the dominant dimension of its endomorphism algebra, and is closely related to a recently introduced homological dimension — rigidity dimension. In this paper, we give explicit formulae for the rigidity degrees of all indecomposable modules over representation-finite self-injective algebras by developing combinatorial methods from the Euclidean algorithm. As an application, the rigidity dimensions of some algebras of types A and E are given.

Abstract:In this paper we consider representations of certain combinatorial categories, including the poset $\D$ of positive integers and division, the Young lattice $\mathscr{Y}$ of partitions of finite sets, the opposite category of the orbit category $\mathscr{Z}$ of $(\mathbb{Z}, +)$ with respect to nontrivial subgroups, and the category $\mathscr{CI}$ of finite cyclic groups and injective homomorphisms. We describe explicit upper bounds for homological degrees of their representations, and deduce that finitely presented representations (resp., representations presented in finite degrees) over a field form abelian subcategories of the representation categories. We also give an explicit description for the category of sheaves over the ringed atomic site $(\mathscr{Z}, \, J_{at}, \, \underline{\mathbb{C}})$, and show that irreducible sheaves are parameterized by primitive roots of the unit.

Abstract:We consider the category of linear relations over an arbitrary commutative ring, and identify it as a subcategory of the category of Kronecker representations. We observe that this subcategory forms a definable torsion-free class in a canonical torsion pair whose torsion class consists of representations supported only at the tail vertex. In the complete local case we also generalise results used in the functorial filtrations method, known before only in case the ground ring is a field. In particular, our results strictly generalise what is usually called the `splitting lemma' linear relations. Our generalisation of a `covering lemma' involves the notion of a linearly compact module in the sense introduced by Zelinski.

Abstract:Let $\A$ be a $\k$-algebra where $\k$ a field of arbitrary characteristic, and let $\mathscr{A}_\k$ be a full subcategory of $\A$-Mod, the abelian category of left $\A$-modules.Following M. Kleiner and I. Reiten, $\mathscr{A}_\k$ is {\it Hom-finite} if the hom-space between any two objects in $\mathscr{A}_\k$ is finite-dimensional over $\k$. We further say that $\mathscr{A}_\k$ is {\it Ext-finite} if $\dim_\k\Ext^i_\A(X,Y)<\infty$ for all objects $X$ and $Y$ in $\mathscr{A}_\k$. Let $V$ be an object in $\mathscr{A}_\k$. In this note we prove that if $\End_\A(V)$ is isomorphic to $\k$, then $V$ has a universal deformation ring $R(\A,V)$, which is a local complete Noetherian commutative $\k$-algebra whose residue field is also isomorphic to $\k$. We use this result to prove that if $\A$ is a local two-point infinite dimensional gentle $\k$-algebra (in the sense of V. Bekkert et al), then $R(\A,V)$ is isomorphic either to $\k$, to $\k[\![t]\!]/(t^2)$ or to $\k[\![t]\!]$.

Abstract:Let $R$ be an integral domain, $Star(R)$ the set of all star operations on $R$ and $StarFC(R)$ the set of all star operations of finite type on $R$. Then $R$ is said to be star regular if $|Star(T)|\leq |Star(R)|$ for every overring $T$ of $R$. In this paper we introduce the notion of finitely star regular domain as an integral domain $R$ such that $|StarFC(T)|\leq |StarFC(R)|$ for each overring $T$ of $R$. First, we show that the notions of star regular and finitely star regular domains are completely different and do not imply each other. Next, we extend/generalize well-known results on star regularity in Noetherian and Prüfer contexts to finitely star regularity. Also we handle the finite star regular domains issued from classical pullback constructions to construct finitely star regular domains that are not star regular and enriches the literature with a such class of domains.
