Abstract:The evolution of altruistic traits is a Darwinian puzzle that has not yet been satisfactorily solved. Using cost-benefit analyses and multi-agent simulations, I show here that there is a clear fitness advantage for the altruists in a mixed population of altruists and egoists if the following conditions are met: (i) The population is segregated into groups that persist over time or several generations. (ii) The benefit achieved by altruists is only shared among the members of their own group. (iii) There is selection pressure on each individual, which is reduced by the benefit provided by altruists. (iv) The costs for an altruist are smaller than the total benefit achieved by him for all members of his group together. (v) There is already a high proportion of altruists in the population and/or the proportion of altruists varies greatly between groups. I refer this kind of population dynamics as the grouping effect, or G-effect for short. This effect is made up of two biases, which basically come about through simple individual selection: the tendency to increase the variance among the groups ( ) and the tendency to increase fitness for altruistic traits when this variance is high ( ). In this context, selection only happens at the individual level. It does not require relationships between the group members, nor does it require competition among the groups. Extended multi-agent simulations with reproduction, mutation and migration also show that altruism can exist stably in a wide range of conditions due to this G-effect.

Abstract:Evolutionary biologists have developed a powerful theory of the evolutionary foundations of altruism between relatives. The theory is based on the idea that individuals who are related by blood share genes. Consider a gene that governs a particular behaviour. The likelihood that the gene will be replicated is higher when the gene takes into account not only the extra reproductive opportunities that the behaviour confers on the host who carries the gene, but also the extra reproductive opportunities that the behaviour confers on relatives of the host who also carry the gene. William Hamilton, the pioneer of this theory, describes it as follows: The social behaviour of a species evolves in such a way that in each distinct behavior-evoking situation the individual will seem to value his neighbor's fitness against his own according to the coefficients of relationship appropriate to that situation. (Hamilton, 1964: 19) The coefficient of relationship between to individuals is the probability that a randomly selected gene in one of these individuals will have an exact copy located in the other individual as a result of descent from a common ancestor. In the case of a haploid population in which each parent has a single gene for being altruistic or selfish and matting is monogamous, the coefficient of relationship between to siblings is ½. 'Hamiltons's rule' is that altruism will spread in a population if the benefit obtained from giving multiplied by the coefficient of relationship exceeds the cost of giving. Abstract:Humans are an intensely social species, frequently performing costly behaviors that benefit others. Efforts to solve the evolutionary puzzle of altruism have a lengthy history, and recent years have seen many important advances across a range of disciplines. Here we bring together this interdisciplinary body of research and review the main theories that have been proposed to explain human prosociality, with an emphasis on kinship, reciprocity, indirect reciprocity, punishment, and morality. We highlight recent methodological advances that are stimulating research and point to some areas that either remain controversial or merit more attention.

Abstract:Arguably the most influential force in human history is the formation of social coalitions and alliances (i.e., long-lasting coalitions) and their impact on individual power. In most great ape species, coalitions occur at individual and group levels and among both kin and non-kin. Nonetheless, ape societies remain essentially hierarchical, and coalitions rarely weaken social inequality. In contrast, human hunter-gatherers show a remarkable tendency to egalitarianism, and human coalitions and alliances occur not only among individuals and groups, but also among groups of groups. Here, we develop a stochastic model describing the emergence of networks of allies resulting from within-group competition for status or mates between individuals utilizing dyadic information. The model shows that alliances often emerge in a phase transition-like fashion if the group size, awareness, aggressiveness, and persuasiveness of individuals are large and the decay rate of individual affinities is small. With cultural inheritance of social networks, a single leveling alliance including all group members can emerge in several generations. Our results suggest that a rapid transition from a hierarchical society of great apes to an egalitarian society of hunter-gatherers (often referred to as "egalitarian revolution") could indeed follow an increase in human cognitive abilities. The establishment of stable group-wide egalitarian alliances creates conditions promoting the origin of cultural norms favoring the group interests over those of individuals.

Abstract:This paper presents an evolutionary model in which altruists and egoists simultaneously survive natural selection. Successive generations of randomly paired agents play a two-stage game consisting first of a choice of technology and second a choice of effort level. This setting induces a form of cooperation if at least one of the pair is an altruist but not when both are egoists. As a result, in the population steady state there is a positive fraction of both types of agent that is a function of the technology and of the altruists’ degree of regard for their opponents.

Abstract:Recent computing-oriented FPGAs feature DSP blocks including small embedded multipliers. A large integer multiplier, for instance for a double-precision floating-point multiplier, consumes many of these DSP blocks. This article studies three non-standard implementation techniques of large multipliers: the Karatsuba-Ofman algorithm, non-standard multiplier tiling, and specialized squarers. They allow for large multipliers working at the peak frequency of the DSP blocks while reducing the DSP block usage. Their overhead in term of logic resources, if any, is much lower than that of emulating embedded multipliers. Their latency overhead, if any, is very small. Complete algorithmic descriptions are provided, carefully mapped on recent Xilinx and Altera devices, and validated by synthesis results.

Abstract:In this study, we develop a novel evolutionary model that incorporates Mendelian genetics, continuous strategies, and the potential for multiple genes to contribute to a single phenotypic trait. The evolution of altruistic behavior, which confers benefits to others at a cost to the individual, remains a fundamental question in evolutionary biology. While previous models have investigated the conditions favoring the emergence and stability of altruism, they have often employed simplifying assumptions, such as single-gene inheritance and discrete strategies. We employ a modified dictator game as the framework for evolutionary interactions and explore the stability of altruistic behavior under various conditions. Our primary result demonstrates that when considering heterozygous genes, altruism can be evolutionarily stable at cost-to-benefit ratios exceeding unity, even with initially low frequencies of altruists in the population. This finding contrasts with the case of homozygous genes, where altruism is only stable at cost-to-benefit ratios greater than 2. The generality of our approach allows for its application to a diverse range of evolutionary games and interactions, providing a powerful tool for investigating the emergence and maintenance of social behaviors and personality traits. Our results contribute to the understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms underlying altruism and underscore the importance of incorporating genetic complexity in evolutionary models. This work has implications for the study of social evolution and the genetic architecture of complex behavioral phenotypes.

Exploring the Evolution of Altruistic Punishment with a PDE Model of Cultural Multilevel Selection

Abstract:Two mechanisms that have been used to study the evolution of cooperative behavior are altruistic punishment, in which cooperative individuals pay additional costs to punish defection, and multilevel selection, in which competition between groups can help to counteract individual-level incentives to cheat. Boyd, Gintis, Bowles, and Richerson have used simulation models of cultural evolution to suggest that altruistic punishment and pairwise group-level competition can work in concert to promote cooperation, even when neither mechanism can do so on its own. In this paper, we formulate a PDE model for multilevel selection motivated by the approach of Boyd and coauthors, modeling individual-level birth-death competition with a replicator equation based on individual payoffs and describing group-level competition with pairwise conflicts based on differences in the average payoffs of the competing groups. Building off of existing PDE models for multilevel selection with frequency-independent group-level competition, we use analytical and numerical techniques to understand how the forms of individual and average payoffs can impact the long-time ability to sustain altruistic punishment in group-structured populations. We find several interesting differences between the behavior of our new PDE model with pairwise group-level competition and existing multilevel PDE models, including the observation that our new model can feature a non-monotonic dependence of the long-time collective payoff on the strength of altruistic punishment. Going forward, our PDE framework can serve as a way to connect and compare disparate approaches for understanding multilevel selection across the literature in evolutionary biology and anthropology.

Abstract:Individuals are predicted to behave more altruistically and less competitively toward their relatives, because they share a relatively high proportion of their genes (e.g., one-half for siblings and one-eighth for cousins). Consequently, by helping a relative reproduce, an individual passes its genes to the next generation, increasing their Darwinian fitness. This idea, termed kin selection, has been applied to a wide range of phenomena in systems ranging from replicating molecules to humans. Nevertheless, competition between relatives can reduce, and even totally negate, the kin-selected benefits of altruism toward relatives. Recent theoretical work has clarified the processes and selective forces underlying this effect and has demonstrated the generality of the effect of competition between relatives.

Abstract:Very few studies have explored how linked selection, or selection at loci neighboring an altruism locus, impacts the evolution of altruism. We used population genetic simulations to study how negative selection at linked loci, or background selection, affects the evolution of altruism. When altruism occurs between full siblings, we found that background selection has the same effect on altruistic genes in family‐structured populations as it does on other, nonsocial, genes. Much research on the evolution of altruism via kin selection, group selection, and reciprocity focuses on the role of a single locus or quantitative trait. Very few studies have explored how linked selection, or selection at loci neighboring an altruism locus, impacts the evolution of altruism. While linked selection can decrease the efficacy of selection at neighboring loci, it might have other effects including promoting selection for altruism by increasing relatedness in regions of low recombination. Here, we used population genetic simulations to study how negative selection at linked loci, or background selection, affects the evolution of altruism. When altruism occurs between full siblings, we found that background selection interfered with selection on the altruistic allele, increasing its fixation probability when the altruistic allele was disfavored and reducing its fixation when the allele was favored. In other words, background selection has the same effect on altruistic genes in family‐structured populations as it does on other, nonsocial, genes. This contrasts with prior research showing that linked selective sweeps can favor the evolution of cooperation, and we discuss possibilities for resolving these contrasting results.

Abstract:The ubiquity of cooperation has motivated a major research program over the last 50 years to discover ever more minimal conditions for the evolution of altruism. One important line of work is based on favoritism toward those who appear to be close relatives. Another important line is based on continuing interactions, whether between individuals (e.g., reciprocity) or between lines of descent in a viscous population. Here, we use an agent-based model to demonstrate a new mechanism that combines both lines of work to show when and how favoritism toward apparently similar others can evolve in the first place. The mechanism is the joint operation of viscosity and of tags (heritable, observable, and initially arbitrary characteristics), which serve as weak and potentially deceptive indicators of relatedness. Although tags are insufficient to support cooperation alone, we show that this joint mechanism vastly increases the range of environments in which contingent altruism can evolve in viscous populations. Even though our model is quite simple, the subtle dynamics underlying our results are not tractable using formal analytic tools (such as analysis of evolutionarily stable strategies), but are amenable to agent-based simulation.

Abstract:Situations involving cooperative behaviour are widespread among animals and humans alike. Game theory and evolutionary dynamics have provided the theoretical and computational grounds to understand what are the mechanisms that allow for such cooperation. Studies in this area usually take into consideration different behavioural strategies and investigate how they can be fixed in the population under evolving rules. However, how those strategies emerged from basic evolutionary mechanisms continues to be not fully understood. To address this issue, here we study the emergence of cooperative strategies through a model of heuristics selection based on evolutionary algorithms. In the proposed model, agents interact with other players according to a heuristic specified by their genetic code and reproduce -- at a longer time scale -- proportionally to their fitness. We show that the system can evolve to cooperative regimes for low mutation rates through heuristics selection while increasing the mutation decreases the level of cooperation. Our analysis of possible strategies shows that reciprocity and punishment are the main ingredients for cooperation to emerge, being conditional cooperation the more frequent strategy. Additionally, we show that if in addition to behavioural rules, genetic relatedness is included, then kinship plays a relevant role. Our results illustrate that our evolutionary heuristics model is a generic and powerful tool to study the evolution of cooperative behaviour.

Abstract:This paper discusses spontaneous communication and its implications for understanding empathy and altruism. The question of the possibility of “true” altruism—giving up one’s genetic potential in favor of the genetic potential of another—is a fundamental issue common to the biological, behavioral, and social sciences. Darwin regarded “social instincts and sympathies” to be critical to the social order, but the possibility of biologically-based prosocial motives and emotions was questioned when selection was interpreted as operating at the level of the gene. In the selfish gene hypothesis, Dawkins argued that the unit of evolutionary selection must be an active, germ-line replicator: a unit whose activities determine whether copies of it are made across evolutionary timescales. He argued that the only active replicator existing across evolutionary timescales is the gene, so that the “selfish gene” is a replicator motivated only to make copies of itself. The communicative gene hypothesis notes that genes function by communicating, and the phenotype communication involves not only the individual sending and receiving abilities of the individual genes involved, but also the relationship between them relative to other genes. Therefore the selection of communication as phenotype involves the selection of individual genes and also their relationship. Relationships become replicators, and are selected across evolutionary timescales including social relationships (e.g., sex, nurturance, dominance-submission). An interesting implication of this view: apparent altruism has been interpreted by selfish gene theorists as due to kin selection and reciprocity, in which the survival of kin and comrade indirectly favor the genetic potential of the altruist. From the viewpoint of the communicative gene hypothesis, rather than underlying altruism, kin selection and reciprocity are ways of restricting altruism to kin and comrade: they are mechanisms not of altruism but of xenophobia.

Abstract:Membrane potential was changed uniformly in segments, 0.7–1.0 mm long, of guinea pig papillary muscles exdsed from the right ventricle by using extracellular polarizing current pulses applied across two electrically insulated compartments. Rhythmic automatic depolarizations (RAD) occurred in 90% of preparations superfused with Tyrode's solution at maximum dlastolic membrane potentials ranging from -35.2 ± 7.5 (threshold) to + 4.0 ± 9.2 mV. The average maximum dV/dt of RAD ranged from 17.1 to 18.0 V/sec within a membrane potential range of -40 to + 20 mV. Raising extracellular Ca'+ concentration [Ca2+]n from 1.8 to 6.8 itim, or application of isoprotere-nol (10-5 g/ml) enhanced the rate of RAD, but lowering [CaJ+]0 to 0.4 mM or exposure to MnCl2 (6 mix) abolished RAD. RAD were enhanced by lowering extracellular K+ concentration [K+]0 from 5.4 to 1.5 mm. RAD were suppressed in 40% of fibers by raising [K+]0 to 15.4 ram, and in all fibers by raising [K+]o to 40.4 him. This suppression was dne to increased |K+]0 and not to K-induced depolarization because it persisted when membrane potential was held by means of a conditioning hyperpolarizing pulse at the level of control resting potential. The slope resistance increased gradually after maximum re polarization. These observations suggest that the development of RAD in depolarized myocardium is associated with a time-dependent decrease in outward current (probably K current) and with increase in the background inward current, presumably flowing through the stow channel carrying Ca or Na ions, or both.

Abstract:Significance Humans have a remarkable, but not ubiquitous, tendency toward altruism. This behavior reflects a classic enigma in evolutionary theory: When and why would individuals forgo selfish interests to help strangers? Population structure is known to catalyze cooperation because it enables local reciprocity—I help you, and you help me. But this explanation assumes bidirectional social interactions, whereas human interactions are often unidirectional: One individual has the opportunity to contribute altruistically to another, but not conversely. Here we uncover a surprising result, that directionality can actually facilitate cooperation. We study this effect theoretically and also in empirical social networks. We suggest several practical implications, including how to modify the directions of social interactions to promote cooperation.

Abstract:We revisit in this paper the relation between evolution of species and the mathematical tool of evolutionary games, which has been used to model and predict it. We indicate known shortcoming of this model that restricts the capacity of evolutionary games to model groups of individuals that share a common gene or a common fitness function. In this paper we provide a new concept to remedy this shortcoming in the standard evolutionary games in order to cover this kind of behavior. Further, we explore the relationship between this new concept and Nash equilibrium or ESS. We indicate through the study of some example in the biology as Hawk and Dove game, Stag Hunt Game and Prisoner Dilemma, that when taking into account a utility that is common to a group of individuals, the equilibrium structure may change dramatically. We also study the multiple access control in slotted Aloha based wireless networks. We analyze the impact of the altruism behavior on the performance at the equilibrium.

Abstract:В статье рассматривается ряд вопросов, связанных с эволюцией и биологией поведения человека. В свете синтеза теорий антропогенеза Клода Оуэна Лавджоя и Сэмюэля Боулза в качестве одного из ключевых вопросов антропологии выделяется неустойчивое динамическое равновесие между парохиально-альтруистическими стратегиями репродуктивного успеха, толкающими человечество к разделению на репродуктивно замкнутые, изолированные и генетически однородные внутри себя суперорганизмы, и эгоистическими стратегиями, ограничивающими развитие эусоциальности и способствующими социальной атомизации, размыванию границ между сообществами и межпопуляционному генетическому смешению. Особое внимание в статье уделяется важному фактору, «играющему на стороне» парохиального альтруизма - репродуктивной и социальной ассортативности, то есть стремлению к формированию семейных и дружеских пар с генетическими родственниками. В заключение отмечаются факторы, которые могут оказывать существенное влияние на направление дальнейшей продолжающейся биологической эволюции человека как вида. The article deals with a number of issues related to the evolution and biology of human behavior. In the light of the synthesis of the theories of anthropogenesis by Claude Owen Lovejoy and Samuel Bowles, one of the key issues of anthropology is an unstable dynamic balance between the parochial-altruistic strategies of reproductive success, pushing humanity to division into reproductively closed, isolated and genetically homogeneous superorganisms, and egoistic strategies, limiting the development of eusociality and contributing to social atomization, blurring of boundaries between communities and interpopulation genetic mixing. Particular attention is paid to an important factor that "plays on the side" of parochial altruism reproductive and social assortativeness, that is, the desire to form family and friendly couples with genetic relatives. In conclusion, factors are noted that can have a significant impact on the direction of further ongoing biological evolution of man as a species.
