Abstract:Fluoroelastomer/clay composites were prepared by melt mixing in an internal mixer using Cloisite(R) Nanoclays: NA, 15A, 20A, 30B, and 93A at three different concentrations viz. 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 phr. Rheology, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the composites prepared. Dynamic rheological measurements showed significant increase in storage moduli (G) in the terminal frequency region for the uncured composites prepared from Cloisite(R) 15A and 20A. At higher frequencies, organically modified nanoclays plasticize the polymer matrix leading to lower modulus values. Using all three characterization techniques, Cloisite(R) 15A and 20A were shown to have intercalated structure in the fluoroelastomer matrix, whereas other nanoclays were shown to have inferior dispersion. The storage modulus increases proportionally with increase in the clay loading and no clay aggregation was observed at higher loadings. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The polyurethane/C16C18-MMT (the montmorillonite modified with cetyloctadecyldimethyl ammonium bromide) nanocomposites were synthesized by intercalative polymerization and cured under room temperature. The d-spacing and the dispersion of the C16C18-MMT in the nanocomposites were measured by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites were measured by Universal Testing System, Electric Anti-fold Instrument, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). It was found out that introducing C16C18-montmorillonite (MMT) in the polyurethane (PU) displayed good mechanical properties and thermal stability. Rheology behavior in liquid state showed that the addition of the C16C18-MMT to PU resulted in low gel time and high viscosity.

Abstract:The evolution of morphology during the melt compounding of polypropylene (PP), maleated ethylene–propylene rubber (EPR-g-MAn) and onium-ion exchanged montmorillonite clay (NR4+-MM) is described. Irrespective of the ratio of components, clay partitions into the EPR-g-MAn phase exclusively, with significant amounts of mineral exfoliation occurring in the very early stages of compounding. These changes in filler distribution and dispersion are accompanied by reductions in the size of the dispersed PP phase, as the rate of droplet coalescence falls in response to an elevated EPR-g-MAn matrix viscosity. However, when NR4+-MM is localized in a dispersed EPR-g-MAn phase, coalescence increases as a result of hindered particle break-up.
Effect of Polyethylene Glycol-Intercalated Organoclay on Vulcanization Characteristics and Reinforcement of Natural Rubber Nanocomposites

Abstract:Organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) clay was intercalated with low-molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) oligomer at melt stage. The intercalation behaviour of PEG into the OMMT clay galleries and its interaction with clay platelets were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetric techniques. A natural rubber (NR)–organoclay nanocomposite (NROCN) was prepared by melt-compounding of NR with PEG-treated organoclay (P-OMMT) and other compounding chemicals using a laboratory-scale internal mixer. XRD analysis of the nanocomposites revealed the intercalation of NR molecules into the P-OMMT clay galleries and subsequent exfoliation during the melt-compounding process. Vulcanization characteristics of the NROCN, especially processing safety and optimum curing time, have been interpreted with reference to the organic modifier of the montmorillonite clay, PEG modification and the degree of exfoliation. Solid-state mechanical properties of P-OMMT clay-filled NROCN vulcanizates have shown a significant enhancement in stiffness and strength characteristics whilst without scarifying the elasticity of the nanocomposites. Results have been explained in terms of the degree of exfoliation, dispersibility of the organoclay and strain-induced crystallization of the natural rubber.
TOUGHENING OF ETHYLENE-PROPYLENE RANDOM COPOLYMER/CLAY NANOCOMPOSITES： COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT COMPATIBILIZERS

Abstract:Ethylene/propylene-random-copolymer (PPR)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by two-stage melt blending. Four types of compatibilizers, including an ethylene-octene copolymer grafted maleic anhydride (POE-g-MA) and three maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylenes (PP-g-MA) with different melt flow indexes (MFI), were used to improve the dispersion of organic clay in matrix. On the other hand, the effects of organic montmorillonite (OMMT) content on the nanocomposite structure in terms of clay dispersion in PPR matrix, thermal behavior and tensile properties were also studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that the organic clay layers are mainly intercalated and partially exfoliated in the nanocomposites. Moreover, a PP-g-MA compatibilizer (compatibilizer B) having high MFI can greatly increase the interlayer spacing of the clay as compared with other compatibilizers. With the introduction of compatibilizer D (POE-g-MA), most of the clays are dispersed into the POE phase, and the shape of the dispersed OMMT appears elliptic, which differs from the strip of PP-g-MA. Compared with virgin PPR, the Young’s modulus of the nanocomposite evidently increases when a compatibilizer C (PP-g-MA) with medium MFI is used. For the nanocomposites with compatibilizer B and C, their crystallinities (X c) increase as compared with that of the virgin PPR. Furthermore, the increase of OMMT loadings presents little effect on the melt temperature (T m) of the PPR/OMMT nanocomposites, and slight effect on their crystallization temperature (T c). Only compatibilizer B can lead to a marked increases in crystallinity and T c of the nanocomposite when the OMMT content is 2 wt%.

Abstract:Polymer/clay nanocomposites consisting of epoxy matrix filled with silicate clay particles were investigated. These particles consist of 1 nm thick platelets or layers with an aspect ratio in the range of 100–1000. Recent and ongoing research has shown that dramatic enhancements can be achieved in stiffness and thermal properties in these nanocomposites with small amounts of particle concentration. The resulting nanocomposite properties are intimately related to the microstructure achieved in processing these materials. The ideal situation of full exfoliation, dispersion and orientation is not usually achieved. A more common case is partial exfoliation and intercalation. The latter is a process whereby the polymer penetrates the interlayer spaces of the clay particles, causing an increase in layer spacing (d-spacing). A three-phase model, including the epoxy matrix, the exfoliated clay nanolayers and the nanolayer clusters was developed. The region consisting of matrix with exfoliated clay nanolayers or platelets was analyzed by assuming near uniform dispersion and random orientation. The properties of intercalated clusters of clay platelets were calculated by a rule of mixtures based on a parallel platelet system. The Mori–Tanaka method was applied to calculate the modulus of the nanocomposite as a function of various parameters, including the exfoliation ratio, clay layer and cluster aspect ratios, d-spacing, intragallery modulus, matrix modulus and matrix Poisson's ratio. With appropriate parameters obtained from experiments, model predictions were in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:A novel method was used to prepare poly(propylene)/montmorillonite/calcium carbonate nanocomposites by melt-mixing, using pristine montmorillonite (MMT), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16), calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and a matrix in a twin-screw extruder. Two different sizes of calcium carbonate were used (nanosized CaCO3 and micron-sized CaCO3, the average sizes being 60 nm and 12 pm respectively). The nanocomposite structure was evidenced using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution electronic microscopy (HREM). Tensile tests and Izod notch impact tests suggested that the incorporation of nanosized CaCO3 into PP/ montmorillonite nanocomposites increased the mechanical properties of the composites, but the improvement in the microsized CaCO3-filled PP/montmorillonite nanocomposites was found to be minimal. The thermal stability and flammability properties were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a cone calorimeter respectively.

Abstract:Rubber blends and their nanocomposites based on clay layers were developed. Two different mass ratio of styrene butadiene–nitrile butadiene rubber blend (SBR–NBR) were prepared. Montmorillonite clay modified with methyl dihydroxyethyl hydrogenated tallow ammonium and trimethyl stearyl ammoniums individually were dispersed in SBR–NBR rubber producing different nanocomposites. The mass ratio of organoclay was varied and optimized; also, the dispersion of organoclay sheets was investigated. The mechanical and thermal properties of the developed rubber nanocomposites were studied and improved. The tensile strength of the new nanocomposites was improved recording 16% improvement compared to blank rubber blend. Thermal stability of the developed rubber nanocomposites was enhanced achieving higher 40 °C in decomposition temperature compared to blank rubber blend. Furthermore, the flammability properties of the developed rubber nanocomposites were evaluated and rate of burning achieved 45% reduction compared to blank rubber blend. The chemical structure of organic modifier played an important role in the final nanocomposites performance. The intercalation of dispersed organoclay sheets with rubber blend was elucidated using X-ray diffraction and dispersion was confirmed using SEM.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Nanocomposites were prepared with different grades of nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) [with nitrile (CN) contents of 26, 35, and 42%] with organoclay (OC) by a melt-compounding process. The rubber/clay nanocomposites were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). An increase in the polarity of NBR affected the XRD results significantly. The dispersion level of the nanofiller in the nanocomposites was determined by a function of the polarity of the rubber, the structure of the clay, and their mutual interaction. The intercalated structure and unintercalated structure coexisted in the lower polar of NBR. In addition, a relatively uniformly dispersed state corresponded to a more intercalated structure, which existed in the higher polar of NBR matrix. Furthermore, high-pressure vulcanization changed the extent of intercalation. The mechanical properties and gas barrier properties were studied for all of the compositions. As a result, an improvement in the mechanical properties was observed along with the higher polarity of NBR. This improvement was attributed to a strong interaction of hydrogen bonding between the CN of NBR and the OH of the clay. Changes in the gas barrier properties, together with changes in the polarity of the rubbers, were explained with the help of the XRD and TEM results. The higher the CN content of the rubber was, the more easily the OC approached to the nanoscale, and the higher the gas barrier properties were. (c) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Poly(propylene)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation, using pristine montmorillonite (MMT), hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (C16), poly(propylene) (PP) and maleic acid (MA) modified PP (MAPP), The nanocomposites structure is demonstrated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution electronic microscopy (HREM). Our purpose is to provide a general concept for manufacturing polymer nanocomposites by melt intercalation starting from the pristine MMT. We found different kneaders (twin-screw extruder or twin-roll mill) have influence on the morphology of the PP/clay nanocomposites. Abstract:In this paper, a new type of organophilic montmorillonite, co-treated with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and 4,4'-diphenymethylate diisocyanate (MDI), was modified and applied to prepare polyurethane/montmorillonite nanocomposites via in situ polymerization. The nanoscale montmorillonite layers were exfoliated and dispersed relatively homogeneously in the polyurethane matrix, and characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal degradation temperature of the nanocomposites increased, as compared with pristine polyurethane. Dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed the constraining effect of exfoliated montmorillonite layers on polyurethane chains, which benefited the increased storage modulus and increased glass transition temperature. Tensile tests showed that the exfoliated nanocomposites were reinforced and toughened by the addition of nanometer-size montmorillonite layers. (C) 2006 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:This article reports on a novel route to develop ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM)/montmorillonite nanocomposites Modification of the MMT was carried out with maleic anhydride (MA), which acts as the intercalation agent for MMT and the vulcanizing agent for EPDM matrix, as well as the compatibilizer for the EPDM and MMT phases. The effect of MA-modified MMT in nanocomposites was investigated by focusing on three major aspects: structural analysis, thermal properties, and material properties. The d-spacings of both the MA modified MMT and exfoliated nanocomposites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the morphology of these nanocomposites was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Dynamic mechanical analysis confirms the constraint effect of exfoliated MMT layers on EPDM chains, which benefited the increased storage modulus, increased glass transition temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that there is some enhancement in degradation behavior between the nanocomposites and EPDM matrix. The nanocomposites exhibit great improvement in tensile strength and modulus, as well as elongation-at-break. The effects of MA addition on the formation of nano-metric reinforcement and on the mechanical properties of nanocomposites are discussed. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Effect of Multi-Monomer Grafted Polyolefin Elastomer/Polypropylene on the Structure and Properties of Polypropylene/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP)/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites with a β nucleating agent (β-NA) were prepared via melt-extrusion using polypropylene/polyolefin elastomer-g-maleic anhydride/2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (PPMH), as a compatibilizer. The effects of the PPMH content on the structure and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. It was revealed that the PPMH enhanced the interfacial interactions between the OMMT surface and the PP matrix, and the extent of intercalation and exfoliation of the OMMT as well as the crystallization properties of the nanocomposites depended significantly on the PPMH content. The impact strength and melt strength of the β-nucleated PP/OMMT blend with 60 wt% PPMH, 40 wt% PP and 3 wt% of OMMT, were about 4 and 6 times higher than that of neat PP, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal stabilities of the composites were better than that of pure PP.

Abstract:Two different methods were used to prepare polypropylene/clay nanocomposites. One was from pristine montmorillonite and a reactive compatibilizer hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (C6); the other is from different organophilic montmorillonites (OMT). The nanocomposites structures are demonstrated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); The thermal properties of the nanocomposites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It is shown that different methods and organophilic montmorillonites influence the morphology and thermal stability of polypropylene/clay nanocomposites.

Abstract:Polyurethane/organophilic montmorillonite (PU/OMT) nanocomposites based on polyether, organophilic montmorillonite, phenylmethane diisocyante, diglycol, and glycerine were synthesized and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Delaminated or intercalated structures in polyurethane/OMT nanocomposites with different OMT content were found. The mechanical, thermal, and inflammability properties of PU/OMT nanocomposites were investigated through tensile, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, and cone calorimetry experiments. It is shown that polyurethane/OMT nanocomposites have enhanced tensile strength, improved thermal stability, and flame retardant properties relative to bulk polyurethane. The tensile strength of PU/OMT with 4.7 wt% OMT content was double compared to that of bulk PU. The thermal and flame retardant properties of PU/OMT were enhanced compared to that of bulk PU. The thermal and flame retardant properties of PU/OMT increased with increasing OMT content.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of non-vulcanized natural rubber and dialyzed natural rubber-clay nanocomposites have been studied by uniaxial deformations to evaluate the reinforcement efficiency of the clay. We show that while non-rubber molecules contribute to auto-reinforcement, removal of these molecules improves significantly the performance of clay as reinforcement agent. These mechanical properties are discussed in relation to morphological aspects of the clay characterized by TEM and SANS. The nanocomposites prepared by “latex-mixing” with aqueous dispersions of clay are found to contain completely exfoliated clay lamellae in co-existence with tactoids. Improved mechanical properties of the nanocomposites can be modeled by the high aspect ratio of exfoliated clay platelets coupled with immobilized rubber matrix. Interestingly, presence of tactoids does not appear to compromise the excellent reinforcement properties of the exfoliated platelets. At high deformations, strain-induced alignment of the clay exhibits anisotropic scattering, with anisotropy increasing with clay concentration and stretching.

Abstract:In this work, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and methacryloyloxyethyhrimethyl ammonium chloride were used to prepare organophilic montmorillonite (O-MMT). Then, polypropylene (PP)clay nanocomposites were prepared by the in situ grafting polymerization of styrene (St)-containing O-MMT onto PP with tert-butyl perbenzoate as an initiator in the solid state. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were applied to study the structure of the layered silicate and modified PP. The surfaces of the composites and, thus, the distribution of the clay in the PP matrix were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The rheology and mechanical properties were studied and are discussed. According to the characterization results, OMMT and St were already grafted onto the PP main chain. Also, the intercalated structure of montmorillonite could be stabilized, and a stable exfoliated structure could be attained. Namely, intercalated PP/OMMT nanocomposites were obtained. The rheological results clearly show that these PP/OMMT nanocomposites had long-chain-branched structures. The peroxide modification of PP had minor effects on the tensile and bending strengths of the modified PP; however, this modification resulted in a significant reduction in the impact strength. Abstract:Blends of silicone rubber (SR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) are immiscible due to different polarity and poor interfacial surface tension between their rubber chains. In this study, compatibilizing effect of a nanoclay addition in SR/EPDM blends was investigated. Viscoelasticity and morphology of nanocomposites based on SR and EPDM, containing 10, 20 and 30 wt% of EPDM and 3, 6 and 9 phr of nanoclay (Cloisite 15A), were studied. The curing behavior of the samples showed that the vulcanization rate and cross-link density of the blends increased with increases in SR content. Morphological study was conducted by XRD, SEM and EDX analyses and they indicated that the nanoparticles tended to disperse in the EPDM phase and consequently caused hardness and the elasticity of this phase in nanocomposites increased. Tensile properties of the samples showed a good fitting between that of experiments and the Maxwell model at initial time of testing (1.5 s) for all the blends. Sample parameters including modulus (E), viscosity (η) and relaxation time (τ) calculated by the Maxwell model revealed that those samples with higher content of nanoparticles exhibit higher modulus and lower relaxation time. The good match in tensile properties based on Maxwell model and those of the experimental data was attributed to good dispersion of nanoclay in the blends.

Abstract:Given the advantages of the latex compounding method, clay was nanodispersed into a styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix, and butadiene–styrene–vinyl pyridine rubber (VPR) latex was introduced to in situ-modified clay to support strong interfacial interaction between clay layers and SBR matrix. The strong interfacial interaction was investigated through Fourier-transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical properties. The structure and properties of SBR/VPR/clay nanocomposites were studied through X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, and mechanical and abrasion testing. The aspect ratio of clay layers was calculated using Halpin–Tsai model. The largely improved mechanical properties and abrasion resistance was adequate evidence that the exfoliated structures with large aspect ratios and strong interfacial interaction play critical roles in nano-reinforcement.
