Abstract:Due to their ability to confine light, optical resonators are of great importance to science and technology, yet their performances are often limited by out-of-plane scattering losses from inevitable fabrication imperfections. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a class of guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs, where out-of-plane scattering losses are strongly suppressed due to their topological nature. Specifically, these resonances arise when multiple bound states in the continuum - each carrying a topological charge - merge in the momentum space and enhance the quality factors of all resonances nearby. We experimentally achieve quality factors as high as $4.9\times 10^5$ based on these resonances in the telecommunication regime, which is 12-times higher than ordinary designs. We further show this enhancement is robust across the samples we this http URL work paves the way for future explorations of topological photonics in systems with open boundary condition and their applications in improving optoelectronic devices in photonic integrated circuits.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the out - of - plane scattering loss problem in optical resonators. Specifically, the out - of - plane scattering loss caused by manufacturing defects or disorder limits the performance of optical resonators in photonic crystal slabs, especially in high - Q (i.e., high - quality factor) applications. This loss can significantly reduce the quality factor of the resonator, thereby affecting its performance in optical communication, nonlinear optics, and laser applications. To overcome this challenge, the paper proposes a new design method to enhance the guided - mode resonance in photonic crystal slabs by utilizing topological properties. Specifically, when multiple bound states carrying topological charges merge in momentum space, the out - of - plane scattering loss can be significantly suppressed, thereby increasing the quality factor of all nearby modes. Experimental results show that samples based on this method achieve a quality factor as high as \(4.9\times10^{5}\) in the telecom band, which is 12 times higher than that of traditional designs, and this enhancement effect shows good robustness in different samples. In this way, the paper paves the way for future exploration of topological photonics under open - boundary conditions and its applications in photonic integrated circuits.
