Abstract:Available data on insulating, semiconducting, and metallic solids verify our new model that incorporates steady-state heat flow into a macroscopic, thermodynamic description of solids, with agreement being best for isotropic examples. Our model is based on: (1) mass and energy conservation; (2) Fourier's law; (3) Stefan-Boltzmann's law; and (4) rigidity, which is a large, yet heretofore neglected, energy reservoir with no counterpart in gases. To account for rigidity while neglecting dissipation, we consider the ideal, limiting case of a perfectly frictionless elastic solid (PFES) which does not generate heat from stress. Its equation-of-state is independent of the energetics, as in the historic model. We show that pressure-volume work (PdV) in a PFES arises from internal interatomic forces, which are linked to Young's modulus (Ξ) and a constant (n) accounting for cation coordination. Steady-state conditions are adiabatic since heat content (Q) is constant. Because average temperature is also constant and the thermal gradient is fixed in space, conditions are simultaneously isothermal: Under these dual restrictions, thermal transport properties do not enter into our analysis. We find that adiabatic and isothermal bulk moduli (B) are equal. Moreover, Q/V depends on temperature only. Distinguishing deformation from volume changes elucidates how solids thermally expand. These findings lead to simple descriptions of the two specific heats in solids: ∂ln(cP)/∂P = -1/B; cP = nΞ times thermal expansivity divided by density; cP = cVnΞ/B. Implications of our validated formulae are briefly covered.

Abstract:We present new general relationships among the material properties of an isotropic material kept in homogeneous stress conditions with hydrostatic pressure and plane shear. The derivation is not limited to the proximity of the zero shear-stress and -strain condition, which allows us to identify the relationship between adiabatic and isothermal shear compliances (inverse of the moduli of rigidity) along with new links, among others, between isobaric and isochoric shear thermal expansion coefficients, heat capacities at constant stress and constant shear strain. Such relationships are important for a variety of applications, including characterization of nanomaterials as well as identification of properties related to earthquakes precursors and complex media (e.g., soil) behaviors. The results may be useful to investigate the behavior of materials during phase transitions involving shear or in non-homogeneous conditions within a local thermodynamic equilibrium framework.

Abstract:We use the internal-variable, effective-temperature thermodynamics developed in two preceding papers to reformulate the shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of amorphous plasticity. As required by the preceding analysis, we make explicit approximations for the energy and entropy of the STZ internal degrees of freedom. We then show that the second law of thermodynamics constrains the STZ transition rates to have an Eyring form as a function of the effective temperature. Finally, we derive an equation of motion for the effective temperature for the case of STZ dynamics.

Abstract:Dislocations are the main carriers of plastic deformation in crystalline materials. Physically based constitutive equations of crystal plasticity typically incorporate dislocation mechanisms, using a dislocation density based description of dislocation microstructure evolution and plastic flow. Typically, such constitutive models are not formulated in a thermodynamic framework. Nevertheless, fundamental considerations of thermodynamic consistency impose constraints on the admissible range of model parameters and/or on the range of application of such models. In particular, it is mandatory to ensure that the internal energy increase associated with dislocation accumulation is properly accounted for in the local energy balance. We demonstrate on some examples taken from the literature how failure to do so can lead to constitutive equations that violate the first and second laws of thermodynamics either generally or in some particular limit cases, and we discuss how to formulate constraints that recover thermodynamic consistency.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the time–temperature correlation of amorphous thermoplastics at large strains based on coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. This correlation behavior is characterized by the strain hardening modulus in uniaxial tension simulations at different strain rates across the glass transition region. The temperature regime is divided into a melt zone, a glassy zone, and a transition zone between them, according to the storage modulus calculated from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) at small strains. In the melt zone, the existence of time–temperature superposition (TTS) at large strains is verified by constructing a master curve of the hardening modulus. The obtained shift factors are then compared to those from DMA at small strains, showing that the TTS behavior is transferable between small and large strains. In the glassy zone, the effects of time and temperature are not superposable at large strains but still can be correlated. To demonstrate this correlation behavior, we introduce a level set of the hardening modulus with a variable pair of strain rate and temperature. Pairs lying in the same level result in coincident stress–strain curves at large strains. The transferability of the correlation behavior between large and small strains is validated by comparing these stress–strain curves at small strains in the pre-yield region. In the transition zone, the correlation behavior is studied with both aforementioned methods, showing that TTS is applicable to large strains but not transferable to small strains. Finally, we propose a phenomenological constitutive model for uniaxial tension to demonstrate the time–temperature correlation at large strains, considering different constant strain rates and temperatures.

Abstract:A new constitutive equation of thermoelasticity for crystals is presented based on the interatomic potential and solid mechanics at finite temperature. Using the new constitutive equation, the calculations for crystal copper and graphene are carried out under different loading paths at different temperatures. The calculated results are in good agreement with those of the previous thermoelasticity constitutive equation based on quantum mechanics, which clearly indicates that our new constitutive equation of thermoelasticity is correct. A lot of comparisons also show that the present theory is more concise and efficient than the previous thermal stress theory in the practical application.

Abstract:The thermodynamic potentials and Clausius–Clapeyron equation are generalized to the solids with arbitrary homogeneous elastic deformations accompanied by change of the solid volume, in particular, to the solids strained by a uniaxial, biaxial, or triaxial pressure. The concept of an ‘effective’ volume V* = AV of the strained solid is introduced. The proportionality coefficient A does not depend on the strain value and is determined by the elastic compliances of the solid and by the stresses ratios. For hydrostatic pressure A = 1. The thermodynamic potentials, the Clausius–Clapeyron equation, and other thermodynamic equations for the strained solids are obtained from the usual ones only by replacing V with V*.

Two situations are studied: the case of an amorphous solid in a stress-strain test, and the case of a lubricant in tribology test. Varying parameters, strain softening, shear thinning, and stick-slip motion can be observed.

Abstract:In the fields of engineering and sciences, materials in non-crystalline solid phases are used for a variety of wide applications. An accurate constitutive model is required in order to understand the stress–strain behavior of these solid materials. In this work, an effort is given to develop an intermolecular interaction-based constitutive model for non-crystalline phase of solid materials. The strain energy density is derived by integrating thermodynamic equation of state of hard sphere solid phase of the materials and represented in terms of packing fraction (volume occupied by the molecules per unit volume of the materials). Radial distribution function in the equation of state is chosen from the Scaled particle theory (SPT). The packing fraction is written in terms of strain invariants of the right Cauchy-Green deformation tensor. A connectivity constant is introduced to connect packing fraction with the strain invariants. Current constitutive model is applied for understanding stress–strain behavior of the materials for uniaxial extension, equibiaxial extension, and pure dilation. Increasing connectivity constant increases principal stress components for the deformations. Results obtained from the current theoretical model are compared with the other theoretical and experimental data available in the literature. We obtain very good agreements with the experimental results of flexible polyurethane foam, soft poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) gel, and amorphous poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) materials. The current model can be extended for any other intermolecular potential considered for non-crystalline solid phase of the materials.

Generic elasticity of thermal, under-constrained systems

Abstract:Athermal (i.e. zero-temperature) under-constrained systems are typically floppy, but they can be rigidified by the application of external strain, which is theoretically well understood. Here and in the companion paper, we extend this theory to finite temperatures for a very broad class of under-constrained systems. In the vicinity of the athermal transition point, we derive from first principles expressions for elastic properties such as isotropic tension $t$ and shear modulus $G$ on temperature $T$, isotropic strain $\varepsilon$, and shear strain $\gamma$, which we confirm numerically. These expressions contain only three parameters, entropic rigidity $\kappa_S$, energetic rigidity $\kappa_E$, and a parameter $b_\varepsilon$ describing the interaction between isotropic and shear strain, which can be determined from the microstructure of the system. Our results imply that in under-constrained systems, entropic and energetic rigidity interact like two springs in series. This also allows for a simple explanation of the previously numerically observed scaling relation $t\sim G\sim T^{1/2}$ at $\varepsilon=\gamma=0$. Our work unifies the physics of systems as diverse as polymer fibers & networks, membranes, and vertex models for biological tissues.

Abstract:We develop an irreversible thermodynamics framework for the description of creep deformation in crystalline solids by mechanisms that involve vacancy diffusion and lattice site generation and annihilation. The material undergoing the creep deformation is treated as a nonhydrostatically stressed multicomponent solid medium with nonconserved lattice sites and inhomogeneities handled by employing gradient thermodynamics. Phase fields describe microstructure evolution, which gives rise to redistribution of vacancy sinks and sources in the material during the creep process. We derive a general expression for the entropy production rate and use it to identify of the relevant fluxes and driving forces and to formulate phenomenological relations among them taking into account symmetry properties of the material. As a simple application, we analyze a one-dimensional model of a bicrystal in which the grain boundary acts as a sink and source of vacancies. The kinetic equations of the model describe a creep deformation process accompanied by grain boundary migration and relative rigid translations of the grains. They also demonstrate the effect of grain boundary migration induced by a vacancy concentration gradient across the boundary.

Abstract:New theoretical relations in linear viscoelasticity are derived by combining two different points of view. On the one hand, the general thermodynamic framework makes it possible to define the energy stored and the energy dissipated in linearly viscoelastic composites. On the other hand, the correspondence principle permits to express the macroscopic strain-stress relation as ordinary differential equations for a set of effective internal variables. A finite and small number of internal variables is rigorously sufficient in several cases of interest, including in particular particulate composites. Interpreting the macroscopic response as a rheological generalized Maxwell model allows us to compute the macroscopic free and dissipated energy of the composite. This interpretation is proved to be exact in several cases of interest. Coupled with Hashin–Shtrikman estimates, these thermodynamic functions provide additional information on the statistics of the field within each individual phase of the composite.

Abstract:Implicit rate-type constitutive relations utilizing discontinuous functions provide a novel approach to the purely phenomenological description of the inelastic response of solids undergoing finite deformation. However, this type of constitutive relations has been so far considered only in the purely mechanical setting, and the complete thermodynamic basis is largely missing. We address this issue, and we develop a thermodynamic basis for such constitutive relations. In particular, we focus on the thermodynamic basis for the classical elastic--perfectly plastic response, but the framework is flexible enough to describe another types of inelastic response as well.

Abstract:Elastic moduli are among the most fundamental and important properties of solid materials, which is why they are routinely characterized in both experiments and simulations. While conceptually simple, the treatment of elastic coefficients is complicated by two factors not yet having been concurrently discussed: finite-strain and nonaffine, internal displacements. Here, we revisit the theory behind zero-temperature, finite-strain elastic moduli and extend it to explicitly consider nonaffine displacements. We further present analytical expressions for second-order derivatives of the potential energy for two-body and generic many-body interatomic potentials, such as cluster and empirical bond-order potentials. Specifically, we revisit the elastic constants of silicon, silicon carbide, and silicon dioxide under hydrostatic compression and dilatation. Abstract:The problem addressed in this study is the full coupling between three different contributions to the strain in thermoviscoelastic composites, elasticity, viscosity and temperature changes. It shows that even in simple situations, the coupling with temperature may lead to counter-intuitive effects which are not accounted for through the sole overall stress–strain relations. The correspondence principle permits to express the macroscopic strain-stress relation and the macroscopic entropy as a set of ordinary differential equations for two types of effective internal variables, mechanical variables on the one hand and thermal variables on the other hand. Interpreting the macroscopic response as a rheological generalized Maxwell model allows us to compute the macroscopic free energy and the dissipated energy of the composite in terms of these internal variables. Coupled with Hashin–Shtrikman estimates, these thermodynamic functions provide additional information on the statistics of the stress field when the composite is subjected to a mixed loading combining mechanical and thermal effects.

Abstract:Solid-solid phase transitions often exhibt hysteresis and to describe the hysteretic behavior we need internal variables. For shape memory single crystal under uni-axial tensile loading, the internal variable has been identified experimentally as the number of interfaces between the austenitic and the martensitic phase regions. Experimental evidences are discussed here. Thermodynamical modelling based on the internal variable is presented.

Abstract:A model is developed for elasticity, plasticity and twinning in anisotropic single crystals subjected to large deformations. Dislocation glide and deformation twinning are dissipative, while energy storage mechanisms associated with dislocation lines and twin boundaries are described via scalar internal state variables. Concepts from continuum crystal plasticity are invoked, with shearing rates on discrete glide and twinning systems modelled explicitly. The model describes aspects of thermomechanical behaviour of single crystals of alumina over a range of loading conditions. Resolved shear stresses necessary for glide or twin nucleation at low to moderate temperatures are estimated from nonlinear elastic calculations, theoretical considerations of Peierls barriers and stacking fault energies and observations from shock physics experiments. These estimates are combined with the existing data from high-temperature experiments to provide initial yield conditions spanning a wide range of temperatures. The model reflects hardening of glide and twin systems from dislocations accumulated during basal slip. Residual elastic volume changes, predicted from nonlinear elastic considerations and approximated dislocation line energies, are positive and proportional to the dislocation line density. While the model suggests that generation of very large dislocation densities could influence the pressure–volume response, volume increases from defects are predicted to be small in crystals deformed via basal glide on a single system.
