Abstract:In this note, we obtain uniqueness results for Beltrami flow in both bounded and unbounded domain with nonempty boundary by establishing an elementary but useful formula involving operators $\divg$ and $\curl$. We also use this formula to deal with Maxwell and Stokes eigenvalue problems.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract:In this note, we improved the Liouville type theorem for the Beltrami flows. Two different methods are used to prove it, one is the monotonicity method, and another is proof by contradiction. The conditions that we proposed on Beltrami flows are significantly weaker than previously known conditions.

Abstract:Leveraging techniques from the literature on geometric numerical integration, we propose a new general method to compute exact expressions for the BCH formula. In its utmost generality, the method consists in embedding the Lie algebra of interest into a subalgebra of the algebra of vector fields on some manifold by means of an isomorphism, so that the BCH formula for two elements of the original algebra can be recovered from the composition of the flows of the corresponding vector fields. For this reason we call our method the flow method. Clearly, this method has great advantage in cases where the flows can be computed analytically. We illustrate its usefulness on some benchmark examples where it can be applied directly, and discuss some possible extensions for cases where an exact expression cannot be obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the initial boundary value problem of arbitrarily high-dimensional Klein-Gordon equations, posed on a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝd for d ≥ 1 and equipped with the requirement of boundary conditions. We derive and analyze an integral formula which is proved to be adapted to different boundary conditions for general Klein-Gordon equations in arbitrarily high-dimensional spaces. The formula gives a closed-form solution to arbitrarily high-dimensional homogeneous linear Klein-Gordon equations, which is totally different from the well-known D’Alembert, Poisson, and Kirchhoff formulas. Some applications are included as well.
Analytical Study of a generalised Dirichlet-Neumann operator and application to three-dimensional water waves on Beltrami flows

Abstract:In this paper we consider three-dimensional steady water waves with vorticity, under the action of gravity and surface tension; in particular we consider so-called Beltrami flows, for which the velocity field and the vorticity are collinear. We discuss a recent variational formulation of the problem which involves a generalisation of the classical Dirichlet-Neumann operator. We study this operator in detail, extending some well-known results for the classical Dirichlet-Neumann operator, such as the Taylor expansion in homogeneous powers of the wave profile, the computation of its differential and the asymptotic expansion of its associated symbol. A new formulation of the problem as a single equation for the wave profile is also presented and discussed in a similar vein. As an application of these results we rigorously prove existence of doubly periodic gravity-capillary steady waves and construct approximate doubly periodic gravity steady waves.

Abstract:The author studies a family of nonlinear integral flows that involve Riesz potentials on Riemannian manifolds. In the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS for short) subcritical regime, he presents a precise blow-up profile exhibited by the flows. In the HLS critical regime, by introducing a dual Q curvature he demonstrates the concentration-compactness phenomenon. If, in addition, the integral kernel matches with the Green's function of a conformally invariant elliptic operator, this critical flow can be considered as a dual Yamabe flow. Convergence is then established on the unit spheres, which is also valid on certain locally conformally flat manifolds.

Energy conservation for 3D Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain. Applications to Beltrami flows

Abstract:In this paper we consider the incompressible 3D Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in a smooth bounded domain. First, we study the 3D Euler equations endowed with slip boundary conditions and we prove the same criteria for energy conservation involving the gradient, already known for the Navier-Stokes equations. Subsequently, we utilise this finding, which is based on a proper approximation of the velocity (and doesn't require estimates or additional assumptions on the pressure), to explore energy conservation for Beltrami flows. Finally, we explore Beltrami solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and demonstrate that conditions leading to energy conservation are significantly distinct from those implying regularity. This remains true even when making use of the bootstrap regularity improvement, stemming from the solution being a Beltrami vector field.

A Calderón Problem for Beltrami Fields

Abstract:On a $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary, we define an analogue of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for Beltrami fields, which are the eigenvectors of the curl operator and play a major role in fluid mechanics. This map sends the normal component of a Beltrami field to its tangential component on the boundary. In this paper we establish two results showing how this normal-to-tangential map encodes geometric information on the underlying manifold. First, we show that the normal-to-tangential map is a pseudodifferential operator of order zero on the boundary whose total symbol determines the Taylor series of the metric at the boundary. Second, we go on to show that a real-analytic simply connected $3$-manifold can be reconstructed from its normal-to-tangential map. Interestingly, since Green's functions do not exist for the Beltrami field equation, a key idea of the proof is to find an appropriate substitute, which turn out to have a natural physical interpretation as the magnetic fields generated by small current loops.

Abstract:We introduce a fractional Yamabe flow involving nonlocal conformally invariant operators on the conformal infinity of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, and show that on the conformal spheres $(\Sn, [g_{\Sn}])$, it converges to the standard sphere up to a Möbius diffeomorphism. This result allows us to obtain extinction profiles of solutions of some fractional porous medium equations. In the end, we use this fractional fast diffusion equation, together with its extinction profile and some estimates of its extinction time, to improve a Sobolev inequality via a quantitative estimate of the remainder term.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of classical solutions to the Dirichlet problem of a class of quasi-linear elliptic equations on an unbounded cone and a U-type domain in Rn (n⩾2). This problem comes from the study of mean curvature flow or its generalization, the flow by powers of mean curvature. Our approach is a modified version of the classical Perron method, where the solutions to the minimal surface equation are used as sub-solutions and a family auxiliary functions are constructed as super-solutions.

Abstract:We prove the equivariant divergence formula for the axiom A flow attractors, which is a recursive formula for perturbation of transfer operators of physical measures along center-unstable manifolds. Hence the linear response acquires an `ergodic theorem', which means that it can be sampled by recursively computing only $2u$ many vectors on one orbit, where $u$ is the unstable dimension.

Abstract:Using extrapolation theory, we develop a new framework to prove the uniqueness of solutions for transport equations. We apply our methodology to unify and extend the classical results of Yudovich and Vishik for 2D Euler equations. In particular, we establish the uniqueness for the Euler flow whose vorticity belongs to new scales of function spaces that contain both Yudovich spaces and BMO. We give a self contained presentation.

Abstract:We provide an Itô's formula for $C^1$-functionals of flows of conditional marginal distributions of continuous semimartingales. This is based on the notion of weak Dirichlet process, and extends the $C^1$-Itô's formula in Gozzi and Russo (2006) to this context. As the first application, we study a class of McKean-Vlasov optimal control problems, and establish a verification theorem which only requires $C^1$-regularity of its value function, which is equivalently the (viscosity) solution of the associated HJB master equation. It goes together with a novel duality result.

Abstract:We establish stochastic functional integral representations for solutions of Oberbeck-Boussinesq equations in the form of McKean-Vlasov-type mean field equations, which can be used to design numerical schemes for calculating solutions and for implementing Monte-Carlo simulations of Oberbeck-Boussinesq flows. Our approach is based on the duality of conditional laws for a class of diffusion processes associated with solenoidal vector fields, which allows us to obtain a novel integral representation theorem for solutions of some linear parabolic equations in terms of the Green function and the pinned measure of the associated diffusion. We demonstrate via numerical experiments the efficiency of the numerical schemes, which are capable of revealing numerically the details of Oberbeck-Boussinesq flows within their thin boundary layer, including B{é}nard's convection feature.

Remarks on singular solutions of the Euler equations

Abstract:We examine the blow-up claims of the incompressible Euler equations for several specific flow-fields, (1) the columnar eddies in the vicinity of stagnation; (2) a quasi-three-dimensional structure for illustrating oscillations and concentrations in shears; (3) a 2-and-1/2D flow. We assert that these claimed finite-time singularities are not genuine. Over the whole space, the potential or the velocity coincides with singularities of harmonic functions. We show that the existence of the potential for unique velocity is necessary but insufficient, as the velocity fields are merely specified up to multiples of the curl of a vector potential, which satisfies a system of degenerated Laplace's equations. We have derived several closed-form formulas in simply-connected domains, as well as orthogonal curvilinear co-ordinates. It follows that steady solutions of Euler's equations are indeterminate. Hence, use of singular potential flow in expounding fluid motions is inept. The formulation of the primitive variables (velocity and pressure) gives rise to non-unique flow fields. In essence, the notion of a finite-time singularity is an ill-defined proposition. In Appendix A, we show that the well-posedness claim (Yudovich, 1995) of planar vorticity in Lebesgue's class has been made on the basis of flawed technicalities. Certain inequalities of functional analysis play key roles in the regularity study. In Appendix B, we assert that their derivations have not been rigorously formulated. Concretely, applications of Sobolev's inequality (as well as Ladyzhenskaya's inequalities) to non-trivial solenoidal velocity fields are unattainable. There have been claims of singular flow solutions in the technical literature. However, a large majority of the deductions rely on these imprecise functional inequalities and hence suffer from logical inconsistency.

Abstract:A formulation of the boundary integral method for solving partial differential equations has been developed whereby the usual weakly singular integral and the Cauchy principal value integral can be removed analytically. The broad applicability of the approach is illustrated with a number of problems of practical interest to fluid and continuum mechanics including the solution of the Laplace equation for potential flow, the Helmholtz equation as well as the equations for Stokes flow and linear elasticity.

Remarks on the separation of Navier-Stokes flows

Abstract:Recently, strong evidence has accumulated that some solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in physically meaningful classes are not unique. The primary purpose of this paper is to establish necessary properties for the error of hypothetical non-unique Navier-Stokes flows under conditions motivated by the scaling of the equations. Our first set of results show that some scales are necessarily active -- comparable in norm to the full error -- as solutions separate. `Scale' is interpreted in several ways, namely via algebraic bounds, the Fourier transform and discrete volume elements. These results include a new type of uniqueness criteria which is stated in terms of the error. The second result is a conditional predictability criteria for the separation of small perturbations. An implication is that the error necessarily activates at larger scales as flows de-correlate. The last result says that the error of the hypothetical non-unique Leray-Hopf solutions of Jia and Sverak locally grows in a self-similar fashion. Consequently, within the Leray-Hopf class, energy can de-correlate at a rate which is faster than linear. This contrasts numerical work on predictability which identifies a linear rate. This discrepancy can likely be explained by the fact that non-uniqueness can be viewed as a perturbation of a singular flow.
