Abstract:We introduce the notion of a family of convolution operators associated with a given elliptic partial differential operator. Such a convolution structure is shown to exist for a general class of Laplace-Beltrami operators on two-dimensional manifolds endowed with cone-like metrics. This structure gives rise to a convolution semigroup representation for the Markovian semigroup generated by the Laplace-Beltrami operator. In the particular case of the operator $\mathcal{L} = \partial_x^2 + {1 \over 2x} \partial_x + {1 \over x} \partial_\theta^2$ on $\mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{T}$, we deduce the existence of a convolution structure for a two-dimensional integral transform whose kernel and inversion formula can be written in closed form in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions. The results of this paper can be interpreted as a natural extension of the theory of one-dimensional generalized convolutions to the framework of multiparameter eigenvalue problems.

Abstract:In this note, we obtain uniqueness results for Beltrami flow in both bounded and unbounded domain with nonempty boundary by establishing an elementary but useful formula involving operators $\divg$ and $\curl$. We also use this formula to deal with Maxwell and Stokes eigenvalue problems.

Abstract:The Laplace-Beltrami problem on closed surfaces embedded in three dimensions arises in many areas of physics, including molecular dynamics (surface diffusion), electromagnetics (harmonic vector fields), and fluid dynamics (vesicle deformation). In particular, the Hodge decomposition of vector fields tangent to a surface can be computed by solving a sequence of Laplace-Beltrami problems. Such decompositions are very important in magnetostatic calculations and in various plasma and fluid flow problems. In this work we develop $L^2$-invertibility theory for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on piecewise smooth surfaces, extending earlier weak formulations and integral equation approaches on smooth surfaces. Furthermore, we reformulate the weak form of the problem as an interface problem with continuity conditions across edges of adjacent piecewise smooth panels of the surface. We then provide high-order numerical examples along surfaces of revolution to support our analysis, and discuss numerical extensions to general surfaces embedded in three dimensions.

Abstract:The Laplace-Beltrami operator on (the surface of) a triaxial ellipsoid admits a sequence of real eigenvalues diverging to plus infinity. By introducing ellipsoidal coordinates, this eigenvalue problem for a partial differential operator is reduced to a two-parameter regular Sturm-Liouville problem involving ordinary differential operators. This two-parameter eigenvalue problem has two families of eigencurves whose intersection points determine the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Eigenvalues are approximated numerically through eigenvalues of generalized matrix eigenvalue problems. Ellipsoids close to spheres are studied employing Lamé polynomials.

Abstract:Two identities on ellipsoidal harmonics, which appear naturally in the theory of boundary value problems, are stated and proved. The first involves the ellipsoidal analogue of the Beltrami operator in spherical coordinates (also known as surface Laplacian). The second identity includes the tangential surface gradient operator defined as the cross product of the unit normal with the gradient operator on an ellipsoidal surface. In both cases, the basic spectral properties of these two operators, as they act on the surface ellipsoidal harmonics, are provided.

Abstract:The conjugate function method is an algorithm for numerical computation of conformal mappings for simply and multiply connected domains. In this paper, the conjugate function method is extended to cover conformal mappings between Riemannian surfaces. The main challenge addressed here is the connection between Laplace--Beltrami equations on surfaces and the computation of the conformal modulus of a quadrilateral. We consider mappings of simply, doubly, and multiply connected domains. The numerical computation is based on an $hp$-adaptive finite element method. The key advantage of our approach is that it allows highly accurate computations of mappings on surfaces, including domains of complex boundary geometry involving strong singularities and cusps. The efficacy of the proposed method is illustrated via an extensive set of numerical experiments including error estimates.

Abstract:Using the embedded gradient vector field method (see P. Birtea, D. Comanescu, Hessian operators on constraint manifolds, J. Nonlinear Science 25, 2015), we present a general formula for the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on a constraint manifold, written in the ambient coordinates. Regarding the orthogonal group as a constraint submanifold of the Euclidean space of $n\times n$ matrices, we give an explicit formula for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the orthogonal group using the ambient Euclidean coordinates. We apply this new formula for some relevant functions.

Abstract:Cauchy's surface area formula says that for a convex body K in n -dimensional Euclidean space, the mean value of the -dimensional volumes of the orthogonal projections of K to hyperplanes is a constant multiple of the surface area of K . We prove an analogous formula, with the volumes of the projections replaced by their moment vectors. This requires to introduce a new vector-valued valuation on convex bodies.

Abstract:The Gauss-Bonnet Formula is a significant achievement in 19th century differential geometry for the case of surfaces and the 20th century cumulative work of H. Hopf, W. Fenchel, C. B. Allendoerfer, A. Weil and S.S. Chern for higher-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. It relates the Euler characteristic of a Riemannian manifold to a curvature integral over the manifold plus a somewhat enigmatic boundary term. In this paper, we revisit the formula using the formalism of double forms, a tool introduced by de Rham, and further developed by Kulkarni, Thorpe, and Gray. We explore the geometric nature of the boundary term and provide some examples and applications.

Abstract:Digital geometry processing focus on 2-dimensional surfaces in 3-dimentional space. Laplace-Beltrami operator is a differential operator defined on Riemannian manifolds. Discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator is a use-ful tool in applications such as 3-dimentional model analysis. Diverse methods of discretization lead to distinct mathematical properties related to the applications they aim at respectively. This paper provides a survey on theory and application of discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator. We hope this paper can provide some help for re-searchers to learn how Laplace-Beltrami operator works in digital geometry processing with in-depth under-standing and identify possible directions for further research and new applications.

Abstract:The convergence problem of the Laplace-Beltrami operators plays an essential role in the convergence analysis of the numerical simulations of some important geometric partial differential equations which involve the operator. In this note we present a new effective and convergent algorithm to compute discrete Laplace-Beltrami operators acting on functions over surfaces. We prove a convergence theorem for our discretization. To our knowledge, this is the first convergent algorithm of discrete Laplace-Beltrami operators over surfaces for functions on general surfaces. Our algorithm is conceptually simple and easy to compute. Indeed, the convergence rate of our new algorithm of discrete Laplace-Beltrami operators over surfaces is $O(r)$ where r represents the size of the mesh of discretization of the surface.

Abstract:We present a boundary integral method, and an accompanying boundary element discretization, for solving boundary-value problems for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the surface of the unit sphere $§$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We consider a closed curve ${\cal C}$ on ${\cal S}$ which divides ${\cal S}$ into two parts ${\cal S}_1$ and ${\cal S}_2$. In particular, ${\cal C} = \partial {\cal S}_1$ is the boundary curve of ${\cal S}_1$. We are interested in solving a boundary value problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator in $§_2$, with boundary data prescribed on $\C$.

Abstract:The paper establishes the Krein and Koplienko trace formulas for multivariable operator functions on symmetrically normed ideals of bounded operators. This partially answers the question of Aleksandrov, Peller and Potapov on the existence of spectral shift measures for tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators. Results are proved for self-adjoint and maximal dissipative operators. They cover both ideals with normal and singular traces. The admissible function classes considered in the trace formulas include both analytic and non-analytic scalar functions. Results are illustrated with examples.

Abstract:In recent studies on the G-convergence of Beltrami operators, a number of issues arouse concerning injectivity properties of families of quasiconformal mappings. Bojarski, D'Onofrio, Iwaniec and Sbordone formulated a conjecture based on the existence of a so-called primary pair. Very recently, Bojarski proved the existence of one such pair. We provide a general, constructive, procedure for obtaining a new rich class of such primary pairs. This proof is obtained as a slight adaptation of previous work by the authors concerning the nonvanishing of the Jacobian of pairs of solutions of elliptic equations in divergence form in the plane. It is proven here that the results previously obtained when the coefficient matrix is symmetric also extend to the non-symmetric case. We also prove a much stronger result giving a quantitative bound for the Jacobian determinant of the so-called \emph{periodic} $\sigma$-harmonic sense preserving homeomorphisms of $\mathbb C$ onto itself.

Abstract:It was conjectured by the first author and Peetre that the higher Laplace–Beltrami operators generate the whole ring of invariant operators on bounded symmetric domains. We give a proof of the conjecture for domains of rank ≤ 6 by using a graph manipulation of Kähler curvature tensor. We also compute higher order terms in the asymptotic expansions of the Bergman kernels and the Berezin transform on bounded symmetric domain.

Abstract:We introduce a concept of bi-conformal transformation, as a generalization of conformal ones, by allowing two orthogonal parts of a manifold with metric g to be scaled by different conformal factors. In particular, we study their infinitesimal version, called bi-conformal vector fields. We show that these are characterized by the differential conditions and , where P and Π are orthogonal projectors (P + Π = g). Keeping P and Π fixed, the set of bi-conformal vector fields is a Lie algebra which can be finite or infinite dimensional according to the dimensionality of the projectors. We determine (i) when an infinite-dimensional case is feasible and its properties, and (ii) a normal system for the generators in the finite-dimensional case. Its integrability conditions are also analysed, which in particular provides the maximum number of linearly independent solutions. We identify the corresponding maximal spaces, and show a necessary geometric condition for a metric tensor to be a double-twisted product. More general 'breakable' spaces are briefly considered. Many known symmetries are included, such as conformal Killing vectors, Kerr–Schild vector fields, kinematic self-similarity, causal symmetries and rigid motions.

Abstract:We look at curvatures that are supported on k-dimensional parts of a simplicial complex G. These curvature all satisfy the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, provided that the k-dimensional simplices cover $G$. Each of these curvatures can be written as an expectation of Poincare-Hopf indices. Linear or non-linear wave dynamics with discrete or continuous time allow to deform these curvatures while keeping the Gauss-Bonnet property.

Abstract:We investigate 1/2 BPS conformal surface operators in the Klebanov-Witten theory. These surface operators preserve certain parts of the conformal symmetry and R-symmetry as well as half of the supersymmetry. We propose the gravity dual of the surface operator as a configuration of a D3-brane in AdS_5 x T^{1,1}. This D3-brane preserves the same amount of the supersymmetry as the surface operator. We also compute the correlation function of the surface operator and a chiral primary operator.

On Gauss-Bonnet type formulas for mappings between surfaces with boundary and their applications

Abstract:We define singular points of the first kind and singular points of the second kind as singular points of mappings between surfaces. Typical examples of these singular points are fold singular points and cusp singular points, respectively. We can construct coherent tangent bundles, which are natural intrinsic formulations of wave fronts, by using mappings between surfaces. It is known that two types of Gauss-Bonnet type formulas hold for coherent tangent bundles over surfaces (possibly with boundary). Hence, we obtain two Gauss-Bonnet type formulas for mappings between surfaces (possibly with boundary). By applying these Gauss-Bonnet type formulas, we prove the Levine formula that relates the rotation indices to the Euler characteristic, and the Quine-Fukuda-Ishikawa formula that relates the mapping degree to the Euler characteristic and the number of singular points.
