Abstract:We obtain a complete description of the integer group determinants for SmallGroup(16,13), the central product of the dihedral group of order eight and cyclic group of order four. These values are the same as the integer group determinants for SmallGroup(16,11), the direct product of the dihedral group of order eight and cyclic group of order two. It was not previously known that the integer group determinants do not determine the group.

Abstract:We obtain a complete description of the integer group determinants for SmallGroup(16,8), the semidihedral group of order 16. While this paper was in preparation, a complete descriptions for this group was independently obtained by Yuka Yamaguchi and Naoya Yamaguchi in [21] (and the other remaining group of order 16 in [20]). We offer our version here for anyone interested in a slightly different approach.

Abstract:In this paper we study some conjectures on determinants with Jacobi symbol entries posed by Z.-W. Sun. For any positive integer n≡3(mod4), we show that(6,1)n=[6,1]n=(3,2)n=[3,2]n=0 and(4,2)n=(8,8)n=(3,3)n=(21,112)n=0 as conjectured by Sun, where(c,d)n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|1≤i,j≤n−1 and[c,d]n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|0≤i,j≤n−1 with (⋅n) the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that (10,9)p=0 for any prime p≡5(mod12), and [5,5]p=0 for any prime p≡13,17(mod20), which were also conjectured by Sun. Our proofs involve character sums over finite fields.

Abstract:In previous paper, the author applied the permanent-determinant method of Kasteleyn and its non-bipartite generalization, the Hafnian-Pfaffian method, to obtain a determinant or a Pfaffian that enumerates each of the ten symmetry classes of plane partitions. After a cosmetic generalization of the Kasteleyn method, we identify the matrices in the four determinantal cases (plain plane partitions, cyclically symmetric plane partitions, transpose-complement plane partitions, and the intersection of the last two types) in the representation theory of sl(2,C). The result is a unified proof of the four enumerations.

Abstract:Let $H$ and $K$ be groups. In this paper we introduce a concept of determinant for automorphisms of $H\times K$ and some concepts of incompatibility for group pairs as a measure of how much $H$ and $K$ are fare from being isomorphic. With the aid of the tools developed from these definitions, we give a characterisation of invertible automorphisms of $H\times K$ by means of their determinants and an explicit description of Aut($H\times K$) as a group of $2$-by-$2$ matrices, in case $H$ or $K$ belong to some relevant classes of groups. Many theoretical and practical applications of the determinants will be presented, together with examples and an analysis on some computational advantages of the determinants.

Abstract:The integral of a function $f$ defined on a symmetric space $M \simeq G/K$ may be expressed in the form of a determinant (or Pfaffian), when $f$ is $K$-invariant and, in a certain sense, a tensor power of a positive function of a single variable. The paper presents a few examples of this idea and discusses future extensions. Specifically, the examples involve symmetric cones, Grassmann manifolds, and classical domains.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly focus on some determinants with Legendre symbol entries. Let p be an odd prime and let (./p) be the Legendre symbol. We show that (-S(d,p)/p) = 1 for any d is an element of Z with (d/p) = 1, and that (W-p/p) = {(-1) (left perpendicular) ({0<k<p/4; (k/p)=-1}) (right perpendicular) if p equivalent to 1 (mod 4), (-1) (left perpendicular) ((p+1)/8) (right perpendicular) if p equivalent to 3 (mod 4), where S(d,p) = det [(i(2)+j(2)/p)](1 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2) and W-p = det[(i(2) - ((p-1)/2)!j/p](0 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2) We also pose some conjectures on determinants, one of which states that (-1) (left perpendicular) ((p+1)/8) (right perpendicular) W-p is a square when p equivalent to 3 (mod 4). Abstract:A finite group $R$ is a DCI-group if, whenever $S$ and $T$ are subsets of $R$ with the Cayley graphs ${\rm Cay}(R,S)$ and ${\rm Cay}(R,T)$ isomorphic, there exists an automorphism $\varphi$ of $R$ with $S^\varphi=T$. Elementary abelian groups of order $p^4$ or smaller are known to be DCI-groups, while those of sufficiently large rank are known not to be DCI-groups. The only published proof that elementary abelian groups of order $p^4$ are DCI-groups uses Schur rings and does not work for $p=2$ (which has been separately proven using computers). This paper provides a simpler proof that works for all primes. Some of the results in this paper also apply to elementary abelian groups of higher rank, so may be useful for completing our determination of which elementary abelian groups are DCI-groups.

Abstract:We consider problems concerning the largest degrees of irreducible characters of symmetric groups, and the multiplicities of character degrees of symmetric groups. Using evidence from computer experiments, we posit several new conjectures or extensions of previous conjectures, and prove a number of results. One of these is that, if $n\geq 21$, then there are at least eight irreducible characters of $S_n$, all of which have the same degree, and which have irreducible restriction to $A_n$. We explore similar questions about unipotent degrees of $\GL_n(q)$. We also make some remarks about how the experiments here shed light on posited algorithms for finding the largest irreducible character degree of $S_n$.
