Abstract:For p=1 (mod 4), we prove the formula (conjectured by R. Chapman) for the determinant of the matrix C with C(i,j)=LegendreSymbol(j-i,p), i,j=0,...,(p-1)/2.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime and $x$ be an indeterminate. Recently, Z.-W. Sun proposed the following conjecture: $$\det\left[x+\left(\frac{j-i}{p}\right)\right]_{0\le i,j\le \frac{p-1}{2}}=\begin{cases} (\frac{2}{p})pb_px-a_p & \mbox{if}\ p\equiv 1\pmod4, 1 & \mbox{if}\ p\equiv 3\pmod4, \end{cases}$$ where $a_p$ and $b_p$ are rational numbers related to the fundamental unit and class number of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$. In this paper, we confirm the above conjecture of Sun based on Vsemirnov's decomposition of Chapman's "evil determinant".

Abstract:In this paper we mainly focus on some determinants with Legendre symbol entries. Let p be an odd prime and let (./p) be the Legendre symbol. We show that (-S(d,p)/p) = 1 for any d is an element of Z with (d/p) = 1, and that (W-p/p) = {(-1) (left perpendicular) ({0<k<p/4; (k/p)=-1}) (right perpendicular) if p equivalent to 1 (mod 4), (-1) (left perpendicular) ((p+1)/8) (right perpendicular) if p equivalent to 3 (mod 4), where S(d,p) = det [(i(2)+j(2)/p)](1 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2) and W-p = det[(i(2) - ((p-1)/2)!j/p](0 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2) We also pose some conjectures on determinants, one of which states that (-1) (left perpendicular) ((p+1)/8) (right perpendicular) W-p is a square when p equivalent to 3 (mod 4). Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. For b,c∈ℤ , Sun introduced the determinant D_p(b,c)=| (i^2+bij+cj^2)^p-2| _1⩽ i,j ⩽ p-1 and investigated the Legendre symbol (D_p(b,c)/p) . Recently Wu, She and Ni proved that (D_p(1,1)/p)=(-2/p) if p≡ 2 (mod 3) , which confirms a previous conjecture of Sun. In this paper, we determine (D_p(1,1)/p) in the case p≡ 1 (mod 3) . Sun proved that D_p(2,2)≡ 0 (mod p) if p≡ 3 (mod 4) ; in contrast, we prove that (D_p(2,2)/p)=1 if p≡ 1 (mod 8) , and (D_p(2,2)/p)=0 if p≡ 5 (mod 8) . Our tools include generalized trinomial coefficients and Lucas sequences.

Abstract:Let $p=2n+1$ be an odd prime. In this paper, we mainly evaluate determinants involving $(\frac {j+k}p)\pm(\frac{j-k}p)$, where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ be the Legendre symbol. In this paper, we study the determinant $$\det\left[\left(\frac{j^2-k^2}p\right)+\left(\frac{jk}p\right)w\right]_{\delta\le j,k\le (p-1)/2}$$ with $\delta\in\{0,1\}$. For example, we prove that the determinant does not depend on $w$ if $p\equiv3\pmod4$ and $\delta=0$.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate determinants whose entries are linear combinations of Legendre symbols. After a review of known results, we present some new results and pose many conjectures for further research. For example, for any prime $p>3$ we conjecture that \begin{align*}&\ \det\left[\left(\frac{j+k}p\right)+\left(\frac{j-k}p\right)+\left(\frac{jk}p\right)\right]_{1\le j,k\le(p-1)/2} \\=&\ \begin{cases}(\frac 2p)p^{(p-5)/4}&\text{if}\ p\equiv1\pmod4, \\(-1)^{(h(-p)-1)/2}(1-(2-(\frac 2p))h(-p))p^{(p-3)/4}&\text{if}\ p\equiv3\pmod4, \end{cases}\end{align*} where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol, and $h(-p)$ stands for the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-p})$.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime and $(\frac{.}{p})$ be the Legendre symbol. For any integer $d$ with $p\nmid d$ and any positive integer $m$, Sun introduced the determinants $$T_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2+dj^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2},$$ and $$D_p^{(m)}= \det\left[(i^2-j^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2-j^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leq i,j\leq (p-1)/2} .$$ In this paper, we obtain some properties of $T_m (d,p)$ and $ \sqrt{D_p^{(m)}}$ for some $m$. We also confirm some related conjectures posed by Zhi-Wei Sun.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. For any $b,c\in\mathbb{Z}$, Z.-W. Sun introduced the new-type determinant $$D_p(b,c)=|(i^2+bij+cj^2)^{p-2}|_{1\leqslant i,j\leqslant p-1},$$ and studied its arithmetic properties. In this paper we mainly prove that $$\left(\frac{D_p(b,1)}{p}\right)=\left(\frac{2b}{p}\right)$$ when $(\frac{b^2-4}{p})=-1$ and $p\equiv1\pmod 4$. As an application of our result, we confirm several conjectures of Sun.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $d\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid d$. For the determinants $$S_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^{m}\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2}\ \ \left(\frac{p-1}2\leqslant m\leqslant p-1\right),$$ Sun recently determined $S_m(d,p)$ modulo $p$ when $m\in\{p-2,p-3\}$ and $(\frac {-d}p)=-1$. In this paper, we obtain $S_{p-2}(d,p)$ modulo $p$ in the remaining case $(\frac{-d}p)=1$, and determine the Legendre symbols $(\frac{S_{p-3}\,(d,p)}p)$ and $(\frac{S_{p-4}\,(d,p)}p)$ in some special cases.

Abstract:In this paper we study some determinants and permanents. Abstract:In this paper we study some conjectures on determinants with Jacobi symbol entries posed by Z.-W. Sun. For any positive integer n≡3(mod4), we show that(6,1)n=[6,1]n=(3,2)n=[3,2]n=0 and(4,2)n=(8,8)n=(3,3)n=(21,112)n=0 as conjectured by Sun, where(c,d)n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|1≤i,j≤n−1 and[c,d]n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|0≤i,j≤n−1 with (⋅n) the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that (10,9)p=0 for any prime p≡5(mod12), and [5,5]p=0 for any prime p≡13,17(mod20), which were also conjectured by Sun. Our proofs involve character sums over finite fields.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime. We investigate Legendre symbol of $\displaystyle \prod_{0<i<j<p/2 \atop p\nmid f(i,j) } f(i,j) \ $, where $i,j\in \Bbb Z, f(i,j)$ is a linear or quadratic form with integer coefficients. When $f=ai^2+bij+cj^2$ and $p\nmid c(a+b+c)$ , we prove that to evaluate the product is equivalent to determine $ \displaystyle \sum_{y=1}^{p-1} \bigg(\frac{y(y+1)(y+k)}{p}\bigg) \pmod{16}$ , where $4c(a+b+c)k \equiv (4ac-b^2)\pmod{p}.$ Parallel results are given for $\displaystyle \prod_{i,j=1 \atop p\nmid f(i,j) }^{(p-1)/2} \bigg(\frac{ f(i,j) }{p}\bigg).$ Then we show that $ \displaystyle \sum_{y=1}^{p-1} \bigg(\frac{y(y+1)(y+k)}{p}\bigg) \pmod{16}$ can be evaluated explicitly when k=2,4,5,9,10 or k is a square. And for several classes of f(i,j) these two kinds of products can be evaluated explicitly. Finally when f is a linear form we give unified identities for these products. Thus we prove these kind of problems raised in Sun's paper.

Abstract:We prove some results conjectured by Zhi-Hong Sun regarding the value $\mod p$ of $\varepsilon_d^{\frac{p-1}4}$, where $\varepsilon_d$ is a unit of norm $-1$ in some fields $\mathbb Q(\sqrt d)$, with $\left(\frac{-1}p\right) =\left(\frac dp\right) =1$. The answer is given in terms of how $p$ writes as $p=f(x,y)=u^2+v^2$, with $x,y,u,v\in\mathbb Z$, where $f$ is a certain quadratic form of determinant $-4d$.

Under the assumptions [(ℤ/mℤ)* : 〈p〉] = 4 and −1 ∉ 〈p〉, the decomposition field of p in thecyclotomic field ℚ(ζ m ) is an imaginary quartic (abelian) field. And G (χ) is an integer in K. We dealwith the case where K is cyclic in this paper and leave the non–cyclic case to the next paper.
