Abstract:In this paper we study some determinants and permanents. In particular, we investigate the new type determinants $$\det[(i^2+cij+dj^2)^{p-2}]_{1\le i,j\le p-1}\ \text{and} \ \det[(i^2+cij+dj^2)^{p-2}]_{0\le i,j\le p-1}$$ modulo an odd prime $p$, where $c$ and $d$ are integers. We also pose some conjectures for further research.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly focus on some determinants with Legendre symbol entries. Let p be an odd prime and let (./p) be the Legendre symbol. We show that (-S(d,p)/p) = 1 for any d is an element of Z with (d/p) = 1, and that (W-p/p) = {(-1) (left perpendicular) ({0<k<p/4; (k/p)=-1}) (right perpendicular) if p equivalent to 1 (mod 4), (-1) (left perpendicular) ((p+1)/8) (right perpendicular) if p equivalent to 3 (mod 4), where S(d,p) = det [(i(2)+j(2)/p)](1 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2) and W-p = det[(i(2) - ((p-1)/2)!j/p](0 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2) We also pose some conjectures on determinants, one of which states that (-1) (left perpendicular) ((p+1)/8) (right perpendicular) W-p is a square when p equivalent to 3 (mod 4). On certain determinants and the square root of some determinants involving Legendre Symbols

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime and $(\frac{.}{p})$ be the Legendre symbol. For any integer $d$ with $p\nmid d$ and any positive integer $m$, Sun introduced the determinants $$T_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2+dj^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2},$$ and $$D_p^{(m)}= \det\left[(i^2-j^2)^m\left(\frac{i^2-j^2}{p}\right)\right]_{1\leq i,j\leq (p-1)/2} .$$ In this paper, we obtain some properties of $T_m (d,p)$ and $ \sqrt{D_p^{(m)}}$ for some $m$. We also confirm some related conjectures posed by Zhi-Wei Sun.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $d\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid d$. For the determinants $$S_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^{m}\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2}\ \ \left(\frac{p-1}2\leqslant m\leqslant p-1\right),$$ Sun recently determined $S_m(d,p)$ modulo $p$ when $m\in\{p-2,p-3\}$ and $(\frac {-d}p)=-1$. In this paper, we obtain $S_{p-2}(d,p)$ modulo $p$ in the remaining case $(\frac{-d}p)=1$, and determine the Legendre symbols $(\frac{S_{p-3}\,(d,p)}p)$ and $(\frac{S_{p-4}\,(d,p)}p)$ in some special cases.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ be the Legendre symbol. In this paper, we study the determinant $$\det\left[\left(\frac{j^2-k^2}p\right)+\left(\frac{jk}p\right)w\right]_{\delta\le j,k\le (p-1)/2}$$ with $\delta\in\{0,1\}$. For example, we prove that the determinant does not depend on $w$ if $p\equiv3\pmod4$ and $\delta=0$.

Abstract:Let p=2n+1 be an odd prime. In this paper, we mainly evaluate determinants involving (j+k/p)±(j-k/p), where (·/p) denotes the Legendre symbol. When p≡14, we determine the characteristic polynomials of the matrices [(j+k/p)+(j-k/p)]_1≤ j,k≤ n and [(j+k/p)-(j-k/p)]_1≤ j,k≤ n, and also prove that |x+(j+k/p)+(j-k/p)+(j/p)y+(k/p)z+(jk/p)w|_1≤ j,k≤ n = (-p)^(p-5)/4((p-1/2)^2wx-(p-1/2y-1)(p-1/2z-1)), which was previously conjectured by the second author.

Abstract:In this paper we study some conjectures on determinants with Jacobi symbol entries posed by Z.-W. Sun. For any positive integer n≡3(mod4), we show that(6,1)n=[6,1]n=(3,2)n=[3,2]n=0 and(4,2)n=(8,8)n=(3,3)n=(21,112)n=0 as conjectured by Sun, where(c,d)n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|1≤i,j≤n−1 and[c,d]n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|0≤i,j≤n−1 with (⋅n) the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that (10,9)p=0 for any prime p≡5(mod12), and [5,5]p=0 for any prime p≡13,17(mod20), which were also conjectured by Sun. Our proofs involve character sums over finite fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we study arithmetic properties of certain determinants involving powers of $i^2+cij+dj^2$, where $c$ and $d$ are integers. For example, for any odd integer $n>1$ with $(\frac dn)=-1$ we prove that $\det [ (\frac{i^2+cij+dj^2}{n})]_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$ is divisible by $\varphi(n)^2$, where $(\frac{\cdot}{n})$ is the Jacobi symbol and $\varphi$ is Euler's totient function. This confirms a previous conjecture of the second author.

Abstract:For an odd prime $p$ and integers $d, k, m$ with gcd$(p,d)=1$ and $2\leq k\leq \frac{p-1}{2}$, we consider the determinant \begin{equation*} S_{m,k}(d,p) = \left|(\alpha_i - \alpha_j)^m\right|_{1 \leq i,j \leq \frac{p-1}{k}}, \end{equation*} where $\alpha_i$ are distinct $k$-th power residues modulo $p$. In this paper, we deduce some residue properties for the determinant $S_{m,k}(d,p)$ as a generalization of certain results of Sun. Using these, we further prove some conjectures of Sun related to $$\left(\frac{\sqrt{S_{1+\frac{p-1}{2},2}(-1,p)}}{p}\right) \text{ and } \left(\frac{\sqrt{S_{3+\frac{p-1}{2},2}(-1,p)}}{p}\right).$$ In addition, we investigate the number of primes $p$ such that $p\ |\ S_{m+\frac{p-1}{k},k}(-1,p)$, and confirm another conjecture of Sun related to $S_{m+\frac{p-1}{2},2}(-1,p)$.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate determinants whose entries are linear combinations of Legendre symbols. After a review of known results, we present some new results and pose many conjectures for further research. For example, for any prime $p>3$ we conjecture that \begin{align*}&\ \det\left[\left(\frac{j+k}p\right)+\left(\frac{j-k}p\right)+\left(\frac{jk}p\right)\right]_{1\le j,k\le(p-1)/2} \\=&\ \begin{cases}(\frac 2p)p^{(p-5)/4}&\text{if}\ p\equiv1\pmod4, \\(-1)^{(h(-p)-1)/2}(1-(2-(\frac 2p))h(-p))p^{(p-3)/4}&\text{if}\ p\equiv3\pmod4, \end{cases}\end{align*} where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol, and $h(-p)$ stands for the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-p})$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a,b\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid ab$. In this paper we mainly evaluate $$T_p^{(\delta)}(a,b,x):=\det\left[x+\tan\pi\frac{aj^2+bk^2}p\right]_{\delta\le j,k\le (p-1)/2}\ \ (\delta=0,1).$$ For example, in the case $p\equiv3\pmod4$ we show that $T_p^{(1)}(a,b,0)=0$ and $$T_p^{(0)}(a,b,x)=\begin{cases} 2^{(p-1)/2}p^{(p+1)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=1, \\p^{(p+1)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=-1,\end{cases}$$ where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ is the Legendre symbol. When $(\frac{-ab}p)=-1$, we also evaluate the determinant $\det[x+\cot\pi\frac{aj^2+bk^2}p]_{1\le j,k\le(p-1)/2}.$ In addition, we pose several conjectures one of which states that for any prime $p\equiv3\pmod4$ there is an integer $x_p\equiv1\pmod p$ such that $$\det\left[\sec2\pi\frac{(j-k)^2}p\right]_{0\le j,k\le p-1}=-p^{(p+3)/2}x_p^2.$$

Abstract:In this paper we evaluate several determinants involving quadratic residues modulo primes. Abstract: In this paper we study arithmetic properties of some permanents, most of which involve trigonometric functions. For example, we prove that for any odd integer $n>1$ we have $$t_n:=\frac1{\sqrt n}\mathrm{per}\left[\tan\pi\frac{jk}n\right]_{1\le j,k\le (n-1)/2}\in\mathbb Z,$$ and that $t_p\equiv(-1)^{(p+1)/2}\pmod p$ for any odd prime $p$. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that for any positive odd integer $n$ we have the identity $$\mathrm{per}\left[\frac1{1+\zeta^{j+k}}\right]_{1\le j,k\le n}=(-1)^{(n-1)/2}\frac{(n!!)^2}{n2^n},$$ where $\zeta$ is any primitive $n$-th root of unity.

Abstract:In this paper we confirm three conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on determinants. We first show that any odd integer n> 3 divides the determinant vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2)) (i(2) + dj(2)/n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <=(n-1)/2), where d is any integer and (center dot/n) is the Jacobi symbol. Then we prove some divisibility results concerning vertical bar(i + dj)(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1) and vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2))(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1), where d not equal 0 and n> 2 are integers. Finally, for any odd prime p and integers c and d with p inverted iota cd, we determine completely the Legendre symbol (S-c(d,p)/p), where S-c(d, p) := vertical bar(i(2)+dj(2)+c/p)vertical bar(1 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2).

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. For b,c∈ℤ , Sun introduced the determinant D_p(b,c)=| (i^2+bij+cj^2)^p-2| _1⩽ i,j ⩽ p-1 and investigated the Legendre symbol (D_p(b,c)/p) . Recently Wu, She and Ni proved that (D_p(1,1)/p)=(-2/p) if p≡ 2 (mod 3) , which confirms a previous conjecture of Sun. In this paper, we determine (D_p(1,1)/p) in the case p≡ 1 (mod 3) . Sun proved that D_p(2,2)≡ 0 (mod p) if p≡ 3 (mod 4) ; in contrast, we prove that (D_p(2,2)/p)=1 if p≡ 1 (mod 8) , and (D_p(2,2)/p)=0 if p≡ 5 (mod 8) . Our tools include generalized trinomial coefficients and Lucas sequences.

Abstract:In this paper, we study certain determinants involving tangent functions. We prove that for any odd number n >= 3 and s is an element of Z(+), the determinant D(n,s) = det(tan(s)pi j+k/n)(1 <= j,k <= n-1) is an element of n(n-2)Z. In the special case s = 2, we confirm a conjecture raised by Zhi-Wei Sun in 2019.
