Abstract:Providing a possible worlds semantics for a logic involves choosing a class of possible worlds models, and setting up a truth definition connecting formulas of the logic with statements about these models. This scheme is so flexible that a danger arises: perhaps, any (reasonable) logic whatsoever can be modelled in this way. Thus, the enterprise would lose its essential ‘tension’. Fortunately, it may be shown that the so-called ‘incompleteness-examples’ from modal logic resist possible worlds modelling, even in the above wider sense. More systematically, we investigate the interplay of truth definitions and model conditions, proving a preservation theorem characterizing those types of truth definition which generate the minimal modal logic.

Abstract:Incompleteness and undecidedness are pervasively present in human reasoning activities and make the definition of the relevant computational models challenging. In this discussion paper we focus on one such model, namely abstract argumentation frameworks, and examine several flavours of incompleteness and undecidedness thereof, by providing a conceptual analysis, a critical literature review, and some new ideas with pointers to future research.

Abstract:Goedel's explicit thesis was that his undecidable formula GUS is a well-formed, well-defined formal sentence in any formalisation of Intuitive Arithmetic IA in which the axioms and rules of inference are recursively definable. His implicit thesis was that GUS is not formally inconsistent in any such system. I argue in a constructive, intuitionistically unobjectionable, and recursively definable formalisation PP of IA that GUS is a well-formed formula but an ill-defined formal sentence reflecting the "Liar" paradox in PP. Further, introducing "formal truth" and "provability" values to selected propositions of IA through PP leads to the collapse of Lucas' Goedelian argument.

Abstract:We give a reframing of Godel's first and second incompleteness theorems that applies even to some undefinable theories of arithmetic. The usual Hilbert-Bernays provability conditions and the diagonal lemma are replaced by a more direct diagonalization argument, from first principles, based in category theory and in a sense analogous to Cantor's original argument. To this end, we categorify the theory Gödel encodings, which might be of independent interest. In our setup, the Gödel sentence is computable explicitly by construction even for $\Sigma ^{0} _{2}$ theories (likely extending to $\Sigma ^{0} _{n}$). In an appendix, we study the relationship of our reframed second incompleteness theorem with arguments of Penrose.

Abstract:According to Chaitin, G\"odel once told him "it doesn't matter which paradox you use [to prove the First Incompleteness Theorem]". In this paper I will present a few infinitary paradoxes and show how to "translate" them to some undecidable sentences in Peano arithmetic, like what G\"odel did to the Liar paradox. The results partly verify G\"odel's claim.

Abstract:In this short paper, I present a few theorems on sentences of arithmetic which are related to Yablo's Paradox as Gödel's first undecidable sentence was related to the Liar paradox. In particular, I consider two different arithemetizations of Yablo's sentences: one resembling Gödel's arithmetization of the Liar, with the negation outside of the provability predicate, one resembling Jeroslow's undecidable sentence, with negation inside. Both kinds of arithmetized Yablo sentence are undecidable, and connected to the consistency sentence for the ambient formal system in roughly the same manner as Gödel and Jeroslow's sentences. Finally, I consider a sentence which is related to the Henkin sentence "I am provable" in the same way that first two arithmetizations are related to Gödel and Jeroslow's sentences. I show that this sentence is provable, using Löb's theorem, as in the standard proof of the Henkin sentence.

Abstract:Incompleteness theorems of Godel, Turing, Chaitin, and Algorithmic Information Theory have profound epistemological implications. Incompleteness limits our ability to ever understand every observable phenomenon in the universe. Incompleteness limits the ability of evolutionary processes from finding optimal solutions. Incompleteness limits the detectability of machine consciousness. This is an effort to convey these thoughts and results in a somewhat entertaining manner.

Abstract:Counterfactuals have become an important area of interdisciplinary interest, especially in logic, philosophy of language, epistemology, metaphysics, psychology, decision theory, and even artificial intelligence. In this study, we propose a new form of analysis for counterfactuals: analysis by algorithmic complexity. Inspired by Lewis-Stalnaker's Nicholas Corrêa 2 Manuscrito-Rev. Int. Fil. Campinas, 2022. Possible Worlds Semantics, the proposed method allows for a new interpretation of the debate between David Lewis and Robert Stalnaker regarding the Limit and Singularity assumptions. Besides other results, we offer a new way to answer the problems raised by Goodman and Quine regarding vagueness, context-dependence, and the non-monotonicity of counterfactuals. Engaging in a dialogue with literature, this study will seek to bring new insights and tools to this debate. We hope our method of analysis can make counterfactuals more understandable in an intuitively plausible way, and a philosophically justifiable manner, aligned with the way we usually think about counterfactual propositions and our imaginative reasoning.

Abstract:This paper gives a counterexample to the impossibility, by G\"odel's second incompleteness theorem, of proving a formula expressing the consistency of arithmetic in a fragment of arithmetic on the assumption that the latter is consistent. This counterexample gives rise to a new type of metamathematical paradox, to be called the G\"odel-Wette paradox, which E. Wette claims to have established since some time ago (see [Wette, 1971], [Wette, 1974]). Nevertheless, our work is independent of Wette's since we have failed to understand the details of his work although we recognize the possibility of the correctness of the latter. Furthermore, the G\"odel-Wette paradox is not the only foundational anomaly which the framework of our approach has uncovered but new questions concerning the decision problem, completeness problem, truth definitions and the status of Richard's paradox in arithmetic and set theory (including type theory) have arisen as well. This work will, eventually be unified into a single monograph.

Abstract:The overarching theme of the following pages is that mathematical logic -- centered around the incompleteness theorems -- is first and foremost an investigation of $\textit{computation}$, not arithmetic. Guided by this intuition we will show the following. * First, we'll all but eliminate the need for Gödel numbers. * Next, we'll introduce a novel notational device for representable functions and walk through a condensed demonstration that Peano Arithmetic can represent every computable function. It has achieved Turing completeness. * Continuing, we'll derive the Diagonal Lemma and First Incompleteness Theorem using significantly simplified proofs. * Approaching the Second Incompleteness Theorem, we'll be able to use some self-referential trickery to avoid much of the technical morass surrounding it; arriving at three separate versions. * Extending the analogy between the First Incompleteness Theorem and the Unsolvability of the Halting Problem produces an equivalent of the Nondeterministic Time Hierarchy Theorem from the field of computational complexity. * Lastly, we'll briefly peer into the realm of the uncomputable by connecting our ideas to oracles.

Abstract:The Turing Machine Halting Problem is a major problem in computer theory, Russell’s Paradox is the root of the Third Mathematical Crisis, and the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is a major discovery in modern logic. The three have had a profound impact on the development of science and have attracted the attention of scientific and philosophical circles. However, since the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem was put forward, the scientific and philosophical significance of its proof has been questioned; in particular, Wittgenstein regards it as a certain logical paradox, and Russell’s Paradox has not yet been settled. This paper makes a detailed analysis of the three based on the view of dialectical infinity. The author notes that the Principle of Comprehension based on the view of actual infinity is the root of Russell’s Paradox. The Turing Machine Halting Problem shows that it is impossible to make an actual-infinite ultimate judgment of the constantly generated infinite world, but the philosophical significance of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is that our understanding of the world is essentially potentially infinite. At the end of the article, the author raises several questions about the proof of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem, finds out the specific paradox form in the proof, points out the high consistency of its proof method and Russell’s Paradox, which strongly supports Wittgenstein’s view. The author points out that the philosophical basis of the proof of the Gödel Incompleteness Theorem is the idea of actual infinity, the proof of the theorem is based on a logically invalid circular formula, the contradiction of the proof originates from the Gödel formula itself, and cannot be attributed to the incompleteness of the system, so the proof is wrong. Therefore, the conclusion of this paper is that the world is constantly developing and changing, and our human understanding of the world is essentially a potential infinite, that is, the world is Aristotelian, not Platonic.

Abstract:We first partly develop a mathematical notion of stable consistency intended to reflect the actual consistency property of human beings. Then we give a generalization of the first and second Gödel incompleteness theorem to stably $1,2$-consistent formal systems. Our argument in particular re-proves the original incompleteness theorems from first principles, using Turing machine language to (computably) construct our "Gödel sentence" directly, in particular we do not use the diagonal lemma, nor any meta-logic, with the proof naturally formalizable in set theory. In practice such a stably consistent formal system could be meant to represent the mathematical output of humanity evolving in time, so that the above gives a formalization of a famous disjunction of Gödel, obstructing computability of intelligence.

Abstract:After highlighting the cases in which the semantics of a language cannot be mechanically reproduced (in which case it is called inherent), the main epistemological consequences of the first incompleteness Theorem for the two fundamental arithmetical theories are shown: the non-mechanizability for the truths of the first-order arithmetic and the peculiarities for the model of the second-order arithmetic. Finally, the common epistemological interpretation of the second incompleteness Theorem is corrected, proposing the new "Metatheorem of undemonstrability of internal consistency".

Mathematical Foundations for Joining Only Knowing and Common Knowledge (Extended Version)

Abstract:Common knowledge and only knowing capture two intuitive and natural notions that have proven to be useful in a variety of settings, for example to reason about coordination or agreement between agents, or to analyse the knowledge of knowledge-based agents. While these two epistemic operators have been extensively studied in isolation, the approaches made to encode their complex interplay failed to capture some essential properties of only knowing. We propose a novel solution by defining a notion of $\mu$-biworld for countable ordinals $\mu$, which approximates not only the worlds that an agent deems possible, but also those deemed impossible. This approach allows us to define a multi-agent epistemic logic with common knowledge and only knowing operators, and a three-valued model semantics for it. Moreover, we show that we only really need biworlds of depth at most $\omega^2+1$. Based on this observation, we define a Kripke semantics on a canonical Kripke structure and show that this semantics coincides with the model semantics. Finally, we discuss issues arising when combining negative introspection or truthfulness with only knowing and show how positive introspection can be integrated into our logic.

Abstract:Gödel proved in the 1930s in his famous Incompleteness Theorems that not all statements in mathematics can be proven or disproven from the accepted ZFC axioms. A few years later he showed the celebrated result that Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis is consistent. Afterwards, Gödel raised the question whether, despite the fact that there is no reasonable axiomatic framework for all mathematical statements, natural statements, such as Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis, can be decided via extending ZFC by large cardinal axioms. While this question has been answered negatively, the problem of finding good axioms that decide natural mathematical statements remains open. There is a compelling candidate for an axiom that could solve Gödel's problem: V = Ultimate-L. In addition, due to recent results the Sealing scenario has gained a lot of attention. We describe these candidates as well as their impact and relationship.

Abstract:It is a widespread belief that results like Gödel's incompleteness theorems or the intrinsic randomness of quantum mechanics represent fundamental limitations to humanity's strive for scientific knowledge. As the argument goes, there are truths that we can never uncover with our scientific methods, hence we should be humble and acknowledge a reality beyond our scientific grasp. Here, I argue that this view is wrong. It originates in a naive form of metaphysics that sees the physical and Platonic worlds as a collection of things with definite properties such that all answers to all possible questions exist ontologically somehow, but are epistemically inaccessible. This view is not only a priori philosophically questionable, but also at odds with modern physics. Hence, I argue to replace this perspective by a worldview in which a structural notion of `real patterns', not `things' are regarded as fundamental. Instead of a limitation of what we can know, undecidability and unpredictability then become mere statements of undifferentiation of structure. This gives us a notion of realism that is better informed by modern physics, and an optimistic outlook on what we can achieve: we can know what there is to know, despite the apparent barriers of undecidability results.

Abstract:What if the paradoxical nature of quantum theory could find its source in some undecidability analog to that of Gödel's incompleteness theorem ? This essay aims at arguing for such Gödelian hunch via two case studies. Firstly, using a narrative based on the Newcomb problem, the theological motivational origin of quantum contextuality is introduced in order to show how this result might be related to a Liar-like undecidability. A topological generalization of contextuality by Abramsky et al. in which the logical structure of quantum contextuality is compared with "Liar cycles" is also presented. Secondly, the measurement problem is analyzed as emerging from a logical error. A personal analysis of the related Wigner's friend thought experiment and and a recent paradox by Frauchiger and Renner is presented, by introducing the notion of "meta-contextuality" as a Liar-like feature underlying the neo-Copenhagen interpretations of quantum theory. Finally, this quantum Gödelian hunch opens a discussion of the paradoxical nature of quantum physics and the emergence of time itself from self-contradiction.

Quantum collapse as undecidable proposition in an Everettian multiverse

Abstract:Our representation of the Universe is built with sequences of symbols, numbers, operators, rules and undecidable propositions defining our mathematical truths, represented either by classical, quantum and probabilistic Turing Machines containing intrinsic randomness. Each representation is at all effects a physical subset of the Universe, a metastructure of events in space and time, which actively participate to the evolution of the Universe as we are internal observers. The evolution is a deterministic sequence of local events, quantum measurements, originated from the local wavefunction collapse of the complementary set of the observers that generate the local events in the Universe. With these assumptions, the Universe and its evolution are described in terms of a semantically closed structure without a global object-environment loss of decoherence as a von Neumann's universal constructor with a semantical abstract whose structure cannot be decided deterministically a-priori from an internal observer. In a semantically closed structure the realization of a specific event writing the semantical abstract of the constructor is a problem that finds a "which way" for the evolution of the Universe in terms of a choice of the constructor's state in a metastructure, the many-world Everett scenario from the specific result of a quantum measurement, a classical Gödel undecidable proposition for an internal observer, exposing the limits of our description and possible simulation of the Universe.
