Abstract:We establish the exact moduli of non-differentiability of Gaussian random fields with stationary increments. As an application of the result, we prove that the uniform Holder condition for the maximum local times of Gaussian random fields with stationary increments obtained in Xiao (1997) is optimal. These results are applicable to fractional Riesz-Bessel processes and stationary Gaussian random fields in the Matern and Cauchy classes.

Abstract:A classical result in the study of Ginzburg-Landau equations is that, for Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, if a sequence of functions has energy uniformly bounded on a logarithmic scale then we can find a subsequence whose Jacobians are convergent in suitable dual spaces and whose renormalized energy is at least the sum of absolute degrees of vortices. However, the corresponding question for the case of tangential or normal boundary conditions has not been considered. In addition, the question of convergence of up to the boundary is not very well understood. Here, we consider these questions for a bounded, connected, open set of $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with $C^{2,1}$ boundary.

Abstract:We investigate the maximal violations for both sides of the d-dimensional CGLMP inequality by using the Bell operator method. It turns out that the maximal violations have a decelerating increase as the dimension increases and tend to a finite value at infinity. The numerical values are given out up to d = 10(6) for positively maximal violations and d = 2 x 10(5) for negatively maximal violations. Counterintuitively, the negatively maximal violations tend to be a little stronger than the positively maximal violations. Further we show the states corresponding to these maximal violations and compare them with the maximally entangled states by utilizing entangled degree defined by von Neumann entropy. It shows that their entangled degree tends to some nonmaximal value as the dimension increases.

Abstract:We compute the second inner variation of the Abelian Yang--Mills--Higgs and Ginzburg--Landau energies. Given a sequence of critical points with energy measures converging to a codimension $2$ minimal submanifold, we use the second inner variation formula to bound the morse index of the submanifold by the index of the critical points. The key tools are the convergence of the energy measures and the stress-energy tensors of solutions to Abelian Yang--Mills--Higgs and Ginzburg--Landau equations.

On Multiple Peaks and Moderate Deviations for the Supremum of A Gaussian Field

Abstract:We prove two theorems concerning extreme values of general Gaussian fields. Our first theorem concerns with the concept of multiple peaks. A theorem of Chatterjee states that when a centered Gaussian field admits the so-called superconcentration property, it typically attains values near its maximum on multiple near-orthogonal sites, known as multiple peaks. We improve his theorem in two aspects: (i) the number of peaks attained by our bound is of the order $\exp(c / \sigma^2)$ (as opposed to Chatterjee's polynomial bound in $1/\sigma$), where $\sigma$ is the standard deviation of the supremum of the Gaussian field, which is assumed to have variance at most $1$ and (ii) our bound need not assume that the correlations are non-negative. We also prove a similar result based on the superconcentration of the free energy. As primary applications, we infer that for the S-K spin glass model on the $n$-hypercube and directed polymers on $\mathbb{Z}_n^2$, there are polynomially (in $n$) many near-orthogonal sites that achieve values near their respective maxima. Our second theorem gives an upper bound on moderate deviation for the supremum of a general Gaussian field. While the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality implies a sub-Gaussian concentration bound for the supremum, we show that the exponent in that bound can be improved under the assumption that the expectation of the supremum is of the same order as that of the independent case.
Tightness of exponential metrics for log-correlated Gaussian fields in arbitrary dimension

Abstract:We prove the tightness of a natural approximation scheme for an analog of the Liouville quantum gravity metric on $\mathbb R^d$ for arbitrary $d\geq 2$. More precisely, let $\{h_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ be a suitable sequence of Gaussian random functions which approximates a log-correlated Gaussian field on $\mathbb R^d$. Consider the family of random metrics on $\mathbb R^d$ obtained by weighting the lengths of paths by $e^{\xi h_n}$, where $\xi > 0$ is a parameter. We prove that if $\xi$ belongs to the subcritical phase (which is defined by the condition that the distance exponent $Q(\xi)$ is greater than $\sqrt{2d}$), then after appropriate re-scaling, these metrics are tight and that every subsequential limit is a metric on $\mathbb R^d$ which induces the Euclidean topology. We include a substantial list of open problems.

Abstract:We consider the Discrete Gaussian Free Field (DGFF) in domains $D_N\subseteq\mathbb Z^2$ arising, via scaling by $N$, from nice domains $D\subseteq\mathbb R^2$. We study the statistics of the values order $\sqrt{\log N}$ below the absolute maximum. Encoded as a point process on $D\times\mathbb R$, the scaled spatial distribution of these near-extremal level sets in $D_N$ and the field values (in units of $\sqrt{\log N}$ below the absolute maximum) tends, as $N\to\infty$, in law to the product of the critical Liouville Quantum Gravity (cLQG) $Z^D$ and the Rayleigh law. The convergence holds jointly with the extremal process, for which $Z^D$ enters as the intensity measure of the limiting Poisson point process, and that of the DGFF itself; the cLQG defined by the limit field then coincides with $Z^D$. While the limit near-extremal process is measurable with respect to the limit continuum GFF, the limit extremal process is not. Our results explain why the various ways to "norm" the lattice cLQG measure lead to the same limit object, modulo overall normalization.

Abstract:We study Liouville first passage percolation metrics associated to a Gaussian free field h mollified by the two-dimensional heat kernel p_t in the bulk, and related star-scale invariant metrics. For γ∈ (0,2) and ξ = γ/d_γ , where d_γ is the Liouville quantum gravity dimension defined in Ding and Gwynne (Commun. Math. Phys. 374:1877–1934, 2020 ), we show that renormalized metrics (λ _t^-1 e^ξ p_t * h ds)_t ∈ (0,1) are tight with respect to the uniform topology. We also show that subsequential limits are bi-Hölder with respect to the Euclidean metric, obtain tail estimates for side-to-side distances, and derive error bounds for the normalizing constants λ _t .

Abstract:It is a folklore result in arithmetic quantum chaos that quantum unique ergodicity on the modular surface with an effective rate of convergence follows from subconvex bounds for certain triple product $L$-functions. The physical space manifestation of this result, namely the equidistribution of mass of Hecke-Maass cusp forms, was proven to follow from subconvexity by Watson, whereas the phase space manifestation of quantum unique ergodicity has only previously appeared in the literature for Eisenstein series via work of Jakobson. We detail the analogous phase space result for Hecke-Maass cusp forms. The proof relies on the Watson-Ichino triple product formula together with a careful analysis of certain archimedean integrals of Whittaker functions.

Stability conditions for mean-field limiting vorticities of the Ginzburg-Landau equations in 2D

Abstract:We analyse the limit of stable solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equations when $\varepsilon$, the inverse of the GL parameter, goes to zero and in a regime where the applied magnetic field is of order $|\log \varepsilon |$ whereas the total energy is of order $|\log \varepsilon|^2$. In order to do that we pass to the limit in the second inner variation of the GL energy. The main difficulty is to understand the convergence of quadratic terms involving derivatives of functions converging only weakly in $H^1$. We use an assumption of convergence of energies, the limiting criticality conditions obtained by Sandier-Serfaty by passing to the limit in the first inner variation and properties of limiting vorticities to find the limit of all the desired quadratic terms. At last we investigate the limiting stability condition we have obtained. In the case with magnetic field we study an example of an admissible limiting vorticity supported on a line in a square $\Omega=(-L,L)^2$ and show that if $L$ is small enough this vorticiy satisfies the limiting stability condition whereas when $L$ is large enough it stops verifying that condition. In the case without magnetic field we use a result of Iwaniec-Onninen to prove that every measure in $H^{-1}(\Omega)$ satisfying the first order limiting criticality condition also verifies the second order limiting stability condition.

We provide a rough description of the geometry of the set of near maxima, estimates on the gap between the two largest maxima, and an estimate for the right tail up to a multiplicative constant on the law of the centered maximum.

Abstract:We study the tail behavior for the maximum of discrete Gaussian free field on a 2D box with Dirichlet boundary condition after centering by its expectation. We show that it exhibits an exponential decay for the right tail and a double exponential decay for the left tail. In particular, our result implies that the variance of the maximum is of order 1, improving an $o(\log n)$ bound by Chatterjee (Chaos, concentration, and multiple valleys, 2008) and confirming a folklore conjecture. An important ingredient for our proof is a result of Bramson and Zeitouni (Commun. Pure Appl. Math, 2010), who proved the tightness of the centered maximum together with an evaluation of the expectation up to an additive constant.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate partial regularity results for the so-called solutions to the "liquid crystals inequalities". These solutions essentially satisfy the incompressible condition as well as the local and global energy inequalities and the pressure equation which may be derived formally from the momentum conservation equations, but are not required to satisfy the simplified Ericksen–Leslie system (for the liquid crystal flows) itself. We prove that under an additional assumption on the orientation for any fixed value of a certain parameter , the solutions to the corresponding "liquid crystals inequalities", which may lack the maximum principle for , satisfy . Here, is the parabolic fractal dimension, is any compact set, and is the set of forward-sigular space-time points near which the solution blows-up forwards in time.

An Extreme Limit with Nonnegative Scalar Curvature

Abstract:In 2014, Gromov vaguely conjectured that a sequence of manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature should have a subsequence which converges in some weak sense to a limit space with some generalized notion of nonnegative scalar curvature. The conjecture has been made precise at an IAS Emerging Topics meeting: requiring that the sequence be three dimensional with uniform upper bounds on diameter and volume, and a positive uniform lower bound on MinA, which is the minimum area of a closed minimal surface in the manifold. Here we present a sequence of warped product manifolds with warped circles over standard spheres, that have circular fibres over the poles whose length diverges to infinity, that satisfy the hypotheses of this IAS conjecture. We prove this sequence converges in the $W^{1,p}$ sense for $p<2$ to an extreme limit space that has nonnegative scalar curvature in the distributional sense as defined by Lee-LeFloch and that the total distributional scalar curvature converges. This paper only requires expertise in smooth Riemannian Geometry, smooth minimal surfaces, and Sobolev Spaces. In a second paper, requiring expertise in metric geometry, the first two authors prove intrinsic flat and Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of our sequence to this extreme limit space and investigate its geometric properties.

Anti-Concentration Inequalities for the Difference of Maxima of Gaussian Random Vectors

Abstract:We derive novel anti-concentration bounds for the difference between the maximal values of two Gaussian random vectors across various settings. Our bounds are dimension-free, scaling with the dimension of the Gaussian vectors only through the smaller expected maximum of the Gaussian subvectors. In addition, our bounds hold under the degenerate covariance structures, which previous results do not cover. In addition, we show that our conditions are sharp under the homogeneous component-wise variance setting, while we only impose some mild assumptions on the covariance structures under the heterogeneous variance setting. We apply the new anti-concentration bounds to derive the central limit theorem for the maximizers of discrete empirical processes. Finally, we back up our theoretical findings with comprehensive numerical studies.
