Abstract:We study the tail behavior for the maximum of discrete Gaussian free field on a 2D box with Dirichlet boundary condition after centering by its expectation. We show that it exhibits an exponential decay for the right tail and a double exponential decay for the left tail. In particular, our result implies that the variance of the maximum is of order 1, improving an $o(\log n)$ bound by Chatterjee (Chaos, concentration, and multiple valleys, 2008) and confirming a folklore conjecture. An important ingredient for our proof is a result of Bramson and Zeitouni (Commun. Pure Appl. Math, 2010), who proved the tightness of the centered maximum together with an evaluation of the expectation up to an additive constant.

Abstract:We consider the Discrete Gaussian Free Field (DGFF) in domains $D_N\subseteq\mathbb Z^2$ arising, via scaling by $N$, from nice domains $D\subseteq\mathbb R^2$. We study the statistics of the values order $\sqrt{\log N}$ below the absolute maximum. Encoded as a point process on $D\times\mathbb R$, the scaled spatial distribution of these near-extremal level sets in $D_N$ and the field values (in units of $\sqrt{\log N}$ below the absolute maximum) tends, as $N\to\infty$, in law to the product of the critical Liouville Quantum Gravity (cLQG) $Z^D$ and the Rayleigh law. The convergence holds jointly with the extremal process, for which $Z^D$ enters as the intensity measure of the limiting Poisson point process, and that of the DGFF itself; the cLQG defined by the limit field then coincides with $Z^D$. While the limit near-extremal process is measurable with respect to the limit continuum GFF, the limit extremal process is not. Our results explain why the various ways to "norm" the lattice cLQG measure lead to the same limit object, modulo overall normalization.

Abstract:We compute the leading asymptotics for the maximum of the (centered) logarithm of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial, denoted (Psi _N), of the Ginibre ensemble as the dimension of the random matrix N tends to (infty ). The method relies on the log-correlated structure of the field (Psi _N) and we obtain the lower-bound for the maximum by constructing a family of Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures associated with certain regularization of (Psi _N) at small mesoscopic scales. We also obtain the leading asymptotics for the dimensions of the sets of thick points and verify that they are consistent with the predictions coming from the Gaussian Free Field. A key technical input is the approach from Ameur et al. (Ann Probab 43(3):1157–1201, 2015) to derive the necessary asymptotics, as well as the results from Webb and Wong (Proc Lond Math Soc (3) 118(5):1017–1056, 2019).

One-arm exponent of critical level-set for metric graph Gaussian free field in high dimensions

Abstract:In this paper, we study the critical level-set of Gaussian free field (GFF) on the metric graph $\widetilde{\mathbb{Z}}^d,d>6$. We prove that the one-arm probability (i.e. the probability of the event that the origin is connected to the boundary of the box $B(N)$) is proportional to $N^{-2}$, where $B(N)$ is centered at the origin and has side length $2\lfloor N \rfloor$. Our proof is hugely inspired by Kozma and Nachmias [29] which proves the analogous result of the critical bond percolation for $d\geq 11$, and by Werner [51] which conjectures the similarity between the GFF level-set and the bond percolation in general and proves this connection for various geometric aspects.

Abstract:A classical result in the study of Ginzburg-Landau equations is that, for Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, if a sequence of functions has energy uniformly bounded on a logarithmic scale then we can find a subsequence whose Jacobians are convergent in suitable dual spaces and whose renormalized energy is at least the sum of absolute degrees of vortices. However, the corresponding question for the case of tangential or normal boundary conditions has not been considered. In addition, the question of convergence of up to the boundary is not very well understood. Here, we consider these questions for a bounded, connected, open set of $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with $C^{2,1}$ boundary.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 1313-1343, June 2024. In this work, we study discrete minimizers of the Ginzburg–Landau energy in finite element spaces. Special focus is given to the influence of the Ginzburg–Landau parameter [math]. This parameter is of physical interest as large values can trigger the appearance of vortex lattices. Since the vortices have to be resolved on sufficiently fine computational meshes, it is important to translate the size of [math] into a mesh resolution condition, which can be done through error estimates that are explicit with respect to [math] and the spatial mesh width [math]. For that, we first work in an abstract framework for a general class of discrete spaces, where we present convergence results in a problem-adapted [math]-weighted norm. Afterward we apply our findings to Lagrangian finite elements and a particular generalized finite element construction. In numerical experiments we confirm that our derived [math]- and [math]-error estimates are indeed optimal in [math] and [math].

Abstract:This paper addresses the statistical problem of estimating the infinite-norm deviation from the empirical mean to the distribution mean for high-dimensional distributions on $\{0,1\}^d$, potentially with $d=\infty$. Unlike traditional bounds as in the classical Glivenko-Cantelli theorem, we explore the instance-dependent convergence behavior. For product distributions, we provide the exact non-asymptotic behavior of the expected maximum deviation, revealing various regimes of decay. In particular, these tight bounds demonstrate the necessity of a previously proposed factor for an upper bound, answering a corresponding COLT 2023 open problem. We also consider general distributions on $\{0,1\}^d$ and provide the tightest possible bounds for the maximum deviation of the empirical mean given only the mean statistic. Along the way, we prove a localized version of the Dvoretzky-Kiefer-Wolfowitz inequality. Additionally, we present some results for two other cases, one where the deviation is measured in some $q$-norm, and the other where the distribution is supported on a continuous domain $[0,1]^d$, and also provide some high-probability bounds for the maximum deviation in the independent Bernoulli case.

On Multiple Peaks and Moderate Deviations for the Supremum of A Gaussian Field

Abstract:We prove two theorems concerning extreme values of general Gaussian fields. Our first theorem concerns with the concept of multiple peaks. A theorem of Chatterjee states that when a centered Gaussian field admits the so-called superconcentration property, it typically attains values near its maximum on multiple near-orthogonal sites, known as multiple peaks. We improve his theorem in two aspects: (i) the number of peaks attained by our bound is of the order $\exp(c / \sigma^2)$ (as opposed to Chatterjee's polynomial bound in $1/\sigma$), where $\sigma$ is the standard deviation of the supremum of the Gaussian field, which is assumed to have variance at most $1$ and (ii) our bound need not assume that the correlations are non-negative. We also prove a similar result based on the superconcentration of the free energy. As primary applications, we infer that for the S-K spin glass model on the $n$-hypercube and directed polymers on $\mathbb{Z}_n^2$, there are polynomially (in $n$) many near-orthogonal sites that achieve values near their respective maxima. Our second theorem gives an upper bound on moderate deviation for the supremum of a general Gaussian field. While the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality implies a sub-Gaussian concentration bound for the supremum, we show that the exponent in that bound can be improved under the assumption that the expectation of the supremum is of the same order as that of the independent case.
Area law for the maximally mixed ground state in degenerate 1D gapped systems

Abstract:We show an area law with logarithmic correction for the maximally mixed state $\Omega$ in the (degenerate) ground space of a 1D gapped local Hamiltonian $H$, which is independent of the underlying ground space degeneracy. Formally, for $\varepsilon>0$ and a bi-partition $L\cup L^c$ of the 1D lattice, we show that $$\mathrm{I}^{\varepsilon}_{\max}(L:L^c)_{\Omega} \leq O(\log(|L|)+\log(1/\varepsilon)),$$ where $|L|$ represents the number of qudits in $L$ and $\mathrm{I}^{\epsilon}_{\max}(L:L^c)_{\Omega}$ represents the $\varepsilon$- 'smoothed maximum mutual information' with respect to the $L:L^c$ partition in $\Omega$. As a corollary, we get an area law for the mutual information of the form $\mathrm{I}(L:R)_\Omega \leq O(\log |L|)$. In addition, we show that $\Omega$ can be approximated up to an $\varepsilon$ in trace norm with a state of Schmidt rank of at most $\mathrm{poly}(|L|/\varepsilon)$.

Abstract:We consider minimizers $u_\varepsilon$ of the Ginzburg-Landau energy with quadratic divergence penalization on a simply-connected two-dimensional domain $\Omega$. On the boundary, strong tangential anchoring is imposed. We prove that minimizers satisfy a $L^\infty$-bound uniform in $\varepsilon$ when $\Omega$ has $C^{2,1}-$boundary and that the Lipschitz constant blows up like $\varepsilon^{-1}$ when $\Omega$ has $C^{3,1}-$boundary. Our theorem extends to $W^{2,p}-$regularity result for our elliptic system with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary condition.

Abstract:We show that the centered maximum of a sequence of log-correlated Gaussian fields in any dimension converges in distribution, under the assumption that the covariances of the fields converge in a suitable sense. We identify the limit as a randomly shifted Gumbel distribution, and characterize the random shift as the limit in distribution of a sequence of random variables, reminiscent of the derivative martingale in the theory of Branching Random Walk and Gaussian Chaos. We also discuss applications of the main convergence theorem and discuss examples that show that for logarithmically correlated fields, some additional structural assumptions of the type we make are needed for convergence of the centered maximum.
Localization of Random Surfaces with Monotone Potentials and an FKG-Gaussian Correlation Inequality

Abstract:The seminal 1975 work of Brascamp-Lieb-Lebowitz initiated the rigorous study of Ginzberg-Landau random surface models. It was conjectured therein that fluctuations are localized on $\mathbb Z^d$ when $d\geq 3$ for very general potentials, matching the behavior of the Gaussian free field. We confirm this behavior for all even potentials $U:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R$ satisfying $U'(x)\geq \min(\varepsilon x,\frac{1+\varepsilon}{x})$ on $x\in \mathbb R^+$. Given correspondingly stronger growth conditions on $U$, we show power or stretched exponential tail bounds on all transient graphs, which determine the maximum field value up to constants in many cases. Further extensions include non-wired boundary conditions and iterated Laplacian analogs such as the membrane model. Our main tool is an FKG-based generalization of the Gaussian correlation inequality, which is used to dominate the finite-volume Gibbs measures by mixtures of centered Gaussian fields.

One-arm Probabilities for Metric Graph Gaussian Free Fields below and at the Critical Dimension

Abstract:For the critical level-set of the Gaussian free field on the metric graph of $\mathbb Z^d$, we consider the one-arm probability $\theta_d(N)$, i.e., the probability that the boundary of a box of side length $2N$ is connected to the center. We prove that $\theta_d(N)$ is $O(N^{-\frac{d}{2}+1})$ for $3\le d\le 5$, and is $N^{-2+o(1)}$ for $d=6$. Our upper bounds match the lower bounds in a previous work by Ding and Wirth up to a constant factor for $3\le d\le 5$, and match the exponent therein for $d=6$. Combined with our previous result that $\theta_d(N) \asymp N^{-2}$ for $d>6$, this seems to present the first percolation model whose one-arm probabilities are essentially completely understood in all dimensions. In particular, these results fully confirm Werner's conjectures (2021) on the one-arm exponents: \begin{equation*} \text{(1) for}\ 3\le d<d_c=6,\ \theta_d(N)=N^{-\frac{d}{2}+o(1)};\ \text{(2) for}\ d>d_c,\ \theta_d(N)=N^{-2+o(1)}. \end{equation*} Prior to our work, Drewitz, Prévost and Rodriguez obtained upper bounds for $d\in \{3, 4\}$, which are very sharp although lose some diverging factors. In the same work, they conjectured that $\theta_{d_c}(N) = N^{-2+o(1)}$, which is now established. In addition, in a recent concurrent work, Drewitz, Prévost and Rodriguez independently obtained the up-to-constant upper bound for $d=3$.

Fractal behavior for nodal lines of smooth planar Gaussian fields at criticality

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of the large scale geometry of the excursion set and nodal set of a planar smooth Gaussian field at criticality $\ell=\ell_c=0$. We prove that there exists $s_1>1$ such that with high probability, macroscopic nodal lines in a box of size $\lambda$ are of length at least $\lambda^{s_1}$. As an application, on the event that a box is crossed by a nodal line, then the shortest crossing is of length at least $\lambda^{s_1}$. We also prove that there exists $s_2<2$ such that with high probability, the shortest crossing is non degenerated, that is, its length is at most $\lambda^{s_2}$. The argument for the lower bound is based on a celebrated paper of Aizenman and Burchard [1] that provides a general argument to show that random curves present a fractal behavior. For the upper bound, our proof relies on the polynomial decay of the probability of one-arm events which was proven in [4].

Abstract:We consider the Gaussian interface model in the presence of random external fields, that is the finite volume (random) Gibbs measure on $\mathbb{R}^{\Lambda_N}$, $\Lambda_N=[-N, N]^d\cap \mathbb{Z}^d$ with Hamiltonian $H_N(\phi)= \frac{1}{4d}\sum\limits_{x\sim y}(\phi(x)-\phi(y))^2-\sum\limits_{x\in \Lambda_N}\eta(x)\phi(x)$ and $0$-boundary conditions. $\{\eta(x)\}_{x\in \mathbb{Z}^d}$ is a family of i.i.d. symmetric random variables. We study how the typical maximal height of a random interface is modified by the addition of quenched bulk disorder. We show that the asymptotic behavior of the maximum changes depending on the tail behavior of the random variable $\eta(x)$ when $d\geq 5$. In particular, we identify the leading order asymptotics of the maximum.

Abstract:We study Liouville first passage percolation metrics associated to a Gaussian free field h mollified by the two-dimensional heat kernel p_t in the bulk, and related star-scale invariant metrics. For γ∈ (0,2) and ξ = γ/d_γ , where d_γ is the Liouville quantum gravity dimension defined in Ding and Gwynne (Commun. Math. Phys. 374:1877–1934, 2020 ), we show that renormalized metrics (λ _t^-1 e^ξ p_t * h ds)_t ∈ (0,1) are tight with respect to the uniform topology. We also show that subsequential limits are bi-Hölder with respect to the Euclidean metric, obtain tail estimates for side-to-side distances, and derive error bounds for the normalizing constants λ _t .
