Abstract:The definition of Suzuki groups over rings is given by means of an explicit description as a difference-algebraic group. For a (not necessarily perfect) field with more than two elements this construction produces a simple group.

Abstract:We obtain structural results about group ring codes over F[G], where F is a finite field of characteristic p > 0 and the Sylow p-subgroup of the Abelian group G is cyclic. As a special case, we characterize cyclic codes over finite fields in the case the length of the code is divisible by the characteristic of the field. By the same approach we study cyclic codes of length m over the ring R = F (q) [u], u (r) = 0 with r > 0, gcd(m, q) = 1. Finally, we give a construction of quasi-cyclic codes over finite fields.

Abstract:Schur rings are a type of subrings of group rings afforded by a partition of the underlined group. In this paper, Schur rings over free abelian group of rank two are classified under the assumption that one of the direct factor is a union of some basic sets. There are eight different types, and all but one type of which are traditional.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the definition of groupoid graded rings. Group graded rings, (skew) groupoid rings, artinian semisimple rings, matrix rings and others can be regarded as special kinds of groupoid graded rings. Our main task is to classify strongly groupoid graded rings by cohomology of groupoids. Some classical results about group graded rings are generalized to groupoid graded rings. In particular, the Clifford Theorem for a strongly groupoid graded ring is given.

Abstract:Among the infinite classes of finite simple groups, the most exotic classes are probably the Suzuki groups and the Ree groups. They are "twisted versions" of groups of Lie type, but they cannot be directly obtained as groups of rational points of a suitable linear algebraic group. We provide a framework in which these groups do arise as groups of rational points of algebraic groups over a "twisted field"; in the finite case, such a twisted field can be interpreted as a "field with $\sqrt{\smash[b]p}$ elements". Our framework at once allows for other, perhaps less known, exotic families of groups. Most notably, there is a class of "mixed groups", introduced by J. Tits but also apparent in the work of Steinberg, and we show that they can be obtained as groups of rational points of algebraic groups over a "mixed field". We show that a base change from $\mathbb{F}_{\sqrt{\smash[b]p}}$ to $\mathbb{F}_p$ transforms twisted groups into mixed groups, and we formulate a notion of "twisted descent" that allows to detect which mixed groups arise in this fashion.

Blocks whose defect groups are Suzuki $2$-groups

Abstract:We classify up to Morita equivalence all blocks whose defect groups are Suzuki $2$-groups. The classification holds for blocks over a suitable discrete valuation ring as well as for those over an algebraically closed field, and in fact holds up to basic Morita equivalence. As a consequence Donovan's conjecture holds for Suzuki $2$-groups. A corollary of the proof is that Suzuki Sylow $2$-subgroups of finite groups with no nontrivial odd order normal subgroup are trivial intersection.

Universally defining subrings in function fields

Abstract:We establish that all rings of $S$-integers are universally definable in function fields in one variable over certain ground fields including global and non-archimedean local fields. That is, we show that the complement of such a ring of $S$-integers is always a diophantine set. As a technical tool, we use a reciprocity exact sequence for quadratic Witt groups in function fields over almost arbitrary base fields (of any characteristic), which is new and of potentially independent interest.

Abstract:The following representation theorem is proven: A partially ordered commutative ring $R$ is a subring of a ring of almost everywhere defined continuous real-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff space $X$ if and only if $R$ is archimedean and localizable. Here we assume that the positive cone of $R$ is closed under multiplication and stable under multiplication with squares, but actually one of these assumptions implies the other. An almost everywhere defined function on $X$ is one that is defined on a dense open subset of $X$. A partially ordered commutative ring $R$ is archimedean if the underlying additive partially ordered abelian group is archimedean, and $R$ is localizable essentially if its order is compatible with the construction of a localization with sufficiently large, positive denominators. As applications we discuss the $\sigma$-bounded case, lattice-ordered commutative rings ($f$-rings), partially ordered fields, and commutative operator algebras.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a ring and $S$ a multiplicative subset of $R$. We introduce and study the notions of ($u$-)$S$-$w$-Noetherian modules and ($u$-)$S$-$w$-principal ideal modules. Some characterizations of these new concepts are given. In particular, we positively answer two open questions proposed by Kim and Lim [12, Question 14] and Lim [8, Question 8].

Abstract:We develop the theory of groupoid graded semisimple rings. Our rings are neither unital nor one-sided artinian. Instead, they exhibit a strong version of having local units and being locally artinian, and we call them $\Gamma_0$-artinian. One of our main results is a groupoid graded version of the Wedderburn-Artin Theorem, where we characterize groupoid graded semisimple rings as direct sums of graded simple $\Gamma_0$-artinian rings and we exhibit the structure of this latter class of rings. In this direction, we also prove a groupoid graded version of Jacobson-Chevalley density theorem. We need to define and study properties of groupoid gradings on matrix rings (possibly of infinite size) over groupoid graded rings, and specially over groupoid graded division rings. Because of that, we study groupoid graded division rings and their graded modules. We consider a natural notion of freeness for groupoid graded modules that, when specialized to group graded rings, gives the usual one, and show that for a groupoid graded division ring all graded modules are free (in this sense). Contrary to the group graded case, there are groupoid graded rings for which all graded modules are free according to our definition, but they are not graded division rings. We exhibit an easy example of this kind of rings and characterize such class among groupoid graded semisimple rings. We also relate groupoid graded semisimple rings with the notion of semisimple category defined by B. Mitchell. For that, we show the link between functors from a preadditive category to abelian groups and graded modules over the groupoid graded ring associated to this category, generalizing a result of P. Gabriel. We characterize simple artinian categories and categories for which every functor from them to abelian groups is free in the sense of B. Mitchell.

Abstract:The three famous problems concerning units, zero-divisors and idempotents in group rings of torsion-free groups, commonly attributed to Kaplansky, have been around for more than 60 years and still remain open in characteristic zero. In this article, we introduce the corresponding problems in the considerably more general context of arbitrary rings graded by torsion-free groups. For natural reasons, we will restrict our attention to rings without non-trivial homogeneous zero-divisors with respect to the given grading. We provide a partial solution to the extended problems by solving them for rings graded by unique product groups. We also show that the extended problems exhibit the same (potential) hierarchy as the classical problems for group rings. Furthermore, a ring which is graded by an arbitrary torsion-free group is shown to be indecomposable, and to have no non-trivial central zero-divisor and no non-homogeneous central unit. We also present generalizations of the classical group ring conjectures.

On the genera of semisimple groups defined over an integral domain of a global function field

Abstract:Let $K=\mathbb{F}_q(C)$ be the global function field of rational functions over a smooth and projective curve $C$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The ring of regular functions on $C-S$ where $S \neq \emptyset$ is any finite set of closed points on $C$ is a Dedekind domain $\mathcal{O}_S$ of $K$. For a semisimple $\mathcal{O}_S$-group $\underline{G}$ with a smooth fundamental group $\underline{F}$, we aim to describe both the set of genera of $\underline{G}$ and its principal genus (the latter if $\underline{G} \otimes_{\mathcal{O}_S} K$ is isotropic at $S$) in terms of abelian groups depending on $\mathcal{O}_S$ and $\underline{F}$ only. This leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse local-global principle to hold for certain $\underline{G}$. We also use it to express the Tamagawa number $\tau(G)$ of a semisimple $K$-group $G$ by the Euler Poincaré invariant. This facilitates the computation of $\tau(G)$ for twisted $K$-groups.

Abstract:We consider first-order definability and decidability questions over rings of integers of algebraic extensions of $\Q$, paying attention to the uniformity of definitions. The uniformity follows from the simplicity of our first-order definition of $\Z$. Namely, we prove that for a large collection of algebraic extensions $K/\Q$, $$ \{x \in \oo_K : \text{$\forall \e \in \oo_K^\times \;\exists \delta \in \oo_K^\times$ such that $\delta-1 \equiv (\e-1)x \pmod{(\e-1)^2}$}\} = \Z $$ where $\oo_K$ denotes the ring of integers of $K$. One of the corollaries of our results is undecidability of the field of constructible numbers, a question posed by Tarski in 1948.

We introduce the notion of a generalized Schur group, i.e., a finite group such that all central S -rings over this group are Schurian. It generalizes the notion of a Schur group in a natural way, and for Abelian groups, the two notions are equivalent. We prove basic properties and present infinite families of non-Abelian generalized Schur groups.

Abstract:For any ring $R$, we introduce an invariant in the form of a partially ordered abelian semigroup $\mathrm{S}(R)$ built from an equivalence relation on the class of countably generated projective modules. We call $\mathrm{S}(R)$ the Cuntz semigroup of the ring $R$. This construction is akin to the manufacture of the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra using countably generated Hilbert modules. To circumvent the lack of a topology in a general ring $R$, we deepen our understanding of countably projective modules over $R$, thus uncovering new features in their direct limit decompositions, which in turn yields two equivalent descriptions of $\mathrm{S}(R)$. The Cuntz semigroup of $R$ is part of a new invariant $\mathrm{SCu}(R)$ which includes an ambient semigroup in the category of abstract Cuntz semigroups that provides additional information. We provide computations for both $\mathrm{S}(R)$ and $\mathrm{SCu}(R)$ in a number of interesting situations, such as unit-regular rings, semilocal rings, and in the context of nearly simple domains. We also relate our construcion to the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra.
