Abstract:Different solution treatments were carried out on the semi-continuously cast Mg-9.55Gd-2.27Y-1.28Zn-0.55Zr-0.11Nd (wt.%) alloy at temperatures of 480 °C, 500 °C, and 520 °C. It was found that the different solution treatment temperatures led to different phase constitutions of the alloy. The Mg3RE-type eutectic phases transform into long period stacking order (LPSO) phases with various morphologies after solution treatment. Increasing the solution temperature resulted in larger grain size, greater number of lamellar LPSO phases, and segregation of Zr element. Block LPSO phases also shifted to rod LPSO phase. After ageing treatment, the special spatial structure consisting of prismatic β′ precipitates, basal γ′ precipitates, and lamellar LPSO phases hindered dislocation movement effectively, leading to high strength. However, the accumulation of massive dislocations promoted the premature formation of cracks at the grain boundary and LPSO/Mg matrix interface, resulting in a rapid decrease in ductility of the alloy. After solution treatment at 480 °C for 12 h and aged at 200 °C for 48 h, the Mg-9.55Gd-2.27Y-1.28Zn-0.55Zr-0.11Nd alloy exhibited favorable comprehensive mechanical properties at room temperature: ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 383 MPa, tensile yield strength (TYS) of 269 MPa, and fracture elongation (EL) of 5.1%.

Abstract:Age hardening, microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-xY-1.5MM-0.4Zr (x=0, 2, 4, 6 wt.%) alloys (MM represents Ce-based misch-metal) were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the formed precipitates being responsible for age hardening changed from fine hexagonal-shaped equilibrium Mg12MM phase to metastable β′ phase with bco crystal structure when Y was added into Mg-1.5MM-0.4Zr alloy, and the volume fraction of precipitate phases also increased. With the increase of Y content in Mg-Y-1.5MM- 0.4Zr alloys, it was found that the age hardening was enhanced, the grain sizes became finer and the tensile strength was improved. The cubic-shaped β-Mg24Y5 precipitate phases were observed at grain boundaries in Mg-6Y-1.5MM-0.4Zr alloy. It was suggested that the distribution of prismatic shaped β′ phases and cubic shaped β-Mg24Y5 precipitate phases in Mg matrix might account for the remarkable enhancement of tensile strength of Mg-Y-MM-Zr alloy. It was shown that the Mg-6Y-1.5MM-0.4Zr alloy was with maximum tensile strength at aged-peak hardness, UTS of 280 MPa at room temperature and 223 MPa at 250°C, respectively.
The Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of As-cast Mg-10Gd-3Y-xZn-0.6Zr (x=0, 0.5, 1 and 2 Wt%) Alloys

Abstract:The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of as-cast Mg-10Gd-3Y-xZn-0.6Zr (x = 0, 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%) alloys have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile tests. The experimental results reveal that the microstructure of the alloy without Zn contains α-Mg and Mg24(Gd,Y)5 phase, the microstructure of the alloy with 0.5% Zn contained of α-Mg, (Mg,Zn)3(Gd,Y) and Mg24(Gd,Y,Zn)5 phase, whereas when Zn content was 1% and 2%, the Mg12(Gd,Y)Zn phase and some needle-shaped stacking faults notably appear and the Mg24(Gd,Y,Zn)5 phases completely disappear. Moreover, a new 18R long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase is observed in grain boundaries with increasing Zn content up to 2%. The tensile tests indicate that the alloy containing 0.5% Zn shows the optimal mechanical properties and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation are 228MPa, 172MPa and 5.1%, respectively. As indicated by fracture analyses, the fracture modes of the alloys with 0%, 1% and 2% Zn are brittleness transcrystalline fracture, and the tensile fracture mode of 0.5% Zn alloy is typical tough transgranular fracture.
Study on Microstructural Evolution and GP Zone Strengthening Mechanism by Solution and Aging Treatment in Non-dendritic Mg-6Zn-5Al Magnesium Alloy

Abstract:The Guinier–Preston (GP) zones have an important influence on the improvement of the age-hardening level of alloy. We here prepare six kinds of Mg-6Zn-5Al (ZA65) magnesium alloy samples to investigate the microstructural evolution, precipitation behavior, and strengthening mechanism using an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and micro-hardness tests. The finding reveals that the GP zones are observed in non-dendritic alloys experiencing pre-aging at 80°C for 24 h, whose formation creates more nucleation sites and accelerate kinetics for precipitated phases. Consequently, the introduced pre-aging has been successful in promoting the increase of the age-hardening level of non-dendritic alloys. The double-aged non-dendritic alloys show a significantly changed microstructure with a high density of long rod-shaped β 1 ′ precipitations, making the age-hardening level of double-aging much better than that of single-aging, and the peak value 90 HV was obtained 4 h in advance, which is an increase of 4 HV compared with that of the direct aged non-dendritic alloy. The strengthening mechanism of non-dendritic alloys is mainly summarized as grain boundary strengthening, GP zone strengthening, and the shearing strengthening of β 1 ′ and β 2 ′ precipitations. Among these, the GP zone strengthening is a fundamental contributor to improving the age-hardening level.

Abstract:As reported in our previous works, a Mg-7Gd-5Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy recently developed exhibited remarkable age-hardening responses and excellent mechanical properties at both room and elevated temperatures. In Mg-7Gd-5Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy, the β precipitate phase was assumed to be one of the main strengthening phases in peak-aged samples. This study aimed to determine the crystal structure and orientation relationship of the β precipitate phase in Mg-7Gd-5Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy using transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy. The results indicated that the β precipitate had a face-centered cubic structure with a lattice parameter of a=2.22 nm. The orientation relationship between the β precipitate phase and the α-Mg matrix was (1¯12)β//(1¯100)α,[110]β/[0001]α. The β plates formed on prismatic planes could play an important role in alloy strengthening by proving effective barriers to gliding dislocations. A single β plate often contained several domains of (11¯1)β twin-related variants. A composition of Mg5(Y0.4Gd0.4Nd0.2) was suggested for the β phase in Mg-7Gd-5Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy.

Abstract:The precipitates in a Mg-7Gd-5Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy aged to peak-ageing plateau (aged at 210 degrees C from 18 h to 180 h) were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and high-angle annular detector dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). Precipitation at the peak-ageing plateau involves the formation of the beta' phase and a new type of plate-shaped phase precipitated along the (0 0 0 1)(alpha) habit plane. The ellipsoid morphology of beta' was illustrated according to [0 0 0 1](alpha) and [1 0 (1) over bar 0](alpha) zone axes observations. The orientation relationship between the beta' precipitates and matrix satisfies [0 0 1](beta')//[0 0 0 1](alpha) and (1 0 0)(beta')//(1 1 (2) over bar 0)(alpha), respectively. The TEM and HRTEM results indicate that the beta' precipitates have a base-centred orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters a = 0.64 nm, b = 2.22 nm and c = 0.52 nm. Further, atomic-scaled HAADF-STEM observations suggest a Mg7RE-type and not a Mg15RE-type structure for the beta' phase. The positive thermal stability of the alloy at 210 degrees C ageing is attributed to the coherent relationship with the matrix and the formation of an interlaced network of the beta' precipitates. Aside from the beta' phase, a large amount of precipitate particles were observed to form on the (0 0 0 1)(alpha) habit plane in the peak-aged samples. The new type of precipitates have a plate shape, of approximately 5 nm wide along the [1 0 (1) over bar 0](alpha) direction of the matrix and approximately 5 nm long along the [(2) over bar 1 1 0](alpha) direction. Abstract:The structures of atomic clusters and GP-zones preceding precipitation in an Al-0.70Mg-0.85Si-0.15Fe-0.25Mn (wt.%) alloy have been investigated by annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging and density functional theory calculations. One analysed condition consisted of one-month natural aging, and another was in a pre-baked state after 24 h aging at 90°C. To quantify the effect of clusters and GP-zones on microstructure development during a subsequent isothermal artificial aging at 185°C, hardness evolution was measured, and precipitate statistics was performed at the peak hardness corresponding to 5 h aging. Several types of clusters and GP-zones have been observed and based on structure and visual appearance named 'Disordered Frank-Kasper', 'Square', 'Binocular', and 1β", 2β", 3β", 4β". The first four are most common in the natural aged condition and are associated with a well-known influence on the initial hardness evolution. The last three are fractions of the hardening β" phase and refer to the number of structural units they contain. These GP-zones have an increased density in the pre-baked condition, leading to a rapid increase in hardness during artificial aging and to a finer microstructure of high-density small needle precipitates at peak hardness.

Abstract:Abstract The morphology and crystal structure of the precipitates in Mg−7Gd−3Y−1Nd−1Zn−0.5Zr (wt.%) alloy with fine plate-like 14H-LPSO structures aged at 240 °C were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). Fine plate-like 14H-LPSO structures precipitate after heat treatment at 500 °C for 2 h, and β-type phases precipitate after the alloy is aged at 240 °C. The long-period atomic stacking sequence of 14H-LPSO structures along the [0001]α direction is ABABCACACACBABA. After being aged at 240 °C for 2 h, the β-type phases are the ordered solution clusters, zig-zag GP zones, and a small number of β′ phases. The peak hardness is obtained at 240 °C for 18 h with a Brinell hardness of 112, the β-type phases are β’ phases and local RE-rich structures. After being aged at 240 °C for 100 h, the β-type phases are β’, β1 and β’F phases. β′ phases nucleate from the zig-zag GP zones directly without β″ phases, and then transform into β1 phase by β’→β’F→β1 transformations. The Zn not only can form LPSO structure, but also is the constituent element of β1 phases. LPSO structures have a certain hindrance to the coarsening of β’ and β1 along 〈0001〉α.
The Aging Behaviour of a Mg-10Gd-3Y-1.0Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) Alloy with Long-Period Stacking Ordered Phase at 275°C

Abstract:We investigated the aging behaviour of a Mg-10Gd-3Y-1.0Zn0.5Zr (wt.%) alloy with long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase at 275 degrees C. Its peak hardness is about 116.4 HV after aging for 25 h. We unravelled the evolution of prismatic precipitates through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation process is 0 ' (10h)- 0 ' + 01 (15 h)- 0 ' + 01 + 0 (>= 20 h), where nano-scale b ' F phase benefits the transformation from 0 ' phase to 01 phase. In addition to the stable basal LPSO structures, the coexistence and competition balance between the prismatic 0 ', 01 and 0 phases synergistically contribute to the high hardness of the aged alloy. The number density of the prismatic precipitates is at the magnitude of 1020/m3. These prismatic precipitates during aging largely determine the hardness of the Mg alloys. The interaction between precipitates and stacking faults brings good compression property.

Abstract:Microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg–7Y–4Gd–xZn–0.4Zr (x = 0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5 wt.%) alloys in the as-cast, as-extruded, and peak-aged conditions have been investigated by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the peak-aged Mg–7Y–4Gd–1.5Zn–0.4Zr alloys have the highest strength after aging at 220 °C. The highest ultimate tensile strength and yield tensile strength are 418 and 320 MPa, respectively. The addition of 1.5 wt.% Zn to the based alloys results in a greater aging effect and better mechanical properties at both room and elevated temperatures. The improved mechanical properties are mainly ascribed to both a fine β′ phase and a long periodic stacking-ordered structure, which coexist together in the peak-aged alloys.

Abstract:The precipitation phases play a critical role in affecting the properties of age-hardenable Mg alloys. The structure and morphology of the intragranular and intergranular precipitates in aged Mg-4 wt%Zn alloy were investigated by using transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM). The peak hardness of 62 HV was obtained after the alloy was aged at 150 °C for 200 h. The precipitates were composed of a large amount of <math>β1′</math> and very low amount of <math>β2′</math> and β. The diameter and length of <math>β1′</math> rods were in the range of 15−20 nm and over 1.3 μm, respectively. The structure of <math>β1′</math> was hexagonal close-packed (HCP) MgZn2 instead of Mg7Zn4. The orientation relationship between <math>β1′</math> and Mg matrix was <math>21¯1¯0β1'//0002Mg</math> and <math>0001β1'//21¯1¯0Mg</math>. The oval shaped precipitate with triclinic Mg3Zn2 structure appeared preferentially at the grain boundary. Its size and morphology did not show much difference with an increase in the aging time. The thin and long <math>β1′</math> rods dominated the strengthening effect of Mg-Zn alloy.

Abstract:Microstructures of an as-cast and heat-treated Mg-6Zn-5Al (wt.%) alloy have been studied using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The second phase of the as-cast alloy is phi-Mg-21(Zn, Al)(17). After solution heat-treatment, the alloy exhibits a prominent hardening effect when aged at 180 degrees C. This is attributed to nanosized tau-Mg-32(Al, Zn)(49) precipitates finely distributed in Mg matrix. A new orientation relationship between tau precipitates and Mg matrix has been identified, i.e., (1 0 0)(tau) //(0 1 - 10)(alpha), (02 - 1) (tau) //(-21 12)(alpha), [012](tau) //[2 - 1 - 1 3](alpha). MgZn2 precipitates are found in over-aged samples.

Abstract:The morphology and crystal structure of the precipitates in Mg−7Gd−3Y−1Nd−1Zn−0.5Zr alloy during isothermal ageing at 240 °C were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). After under-ageing for 2 h, the precipitates in the alloy are ordered solute clusters with rare earth atomic columns exhibiting hexagonal ring structure, zigzag GP zones and β' in its early formation. After peak-ageing for 18 h, the precipitates are mainly β' and new rod-like β'p accompanied with β'. After over-ageing for 100 h, the precipitates are β', β1, long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) building block known as γ′ and 14H-LPSO. β' has the three-dimensional shape of convex lens with smaller length-to-width ratio viewed along 〈0001〉α than that in the EW75 alloy. The excellent thermal stability of this alloy can be attributed to the γ' and 14H-LPSO retarding the growth of β' and β1, low diffusion rate of rare earth atoms and physical character of β' and β1.
Effects of Mg/Zn ratio and pre-aging on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al–Mg–Zn–Cu alloys

Abstract:The alloy composition and aging process are significant factors determining the type of precipitates in Al alloys. In this work, the effects of Mg/Zn ratio and pre-aging process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al–Mg–Zn–Cu alloys were systematically investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), hardness measurements and tensile tests. The results show that reducing the Mg/Zn ratio significantly increases the density of T′-Mg 32 (AlZnCu) 49 precipitates, thereby enhancing and accelerating the aging response. A detailed comparison has been made between Al–Mg–Zn–Cu alloys aged by single-step and two-step artificial aging processes. With the same composition, the alloy exhibits a higher yield strength under the two-stage aging process, resulting from the higher precipitation strengthening effect (Orowan dislocation bypassing mechanism) due to the smaller size and higher density of precipitates. Furthermore, it is particularly interesting that there may be two evolution paths for GPII zones with (111) Al habit plane: one is that the GPII zones are dissolved into the matrix, and the other is that the GPII zones gradually evolve into the T′ precipitates. This work sheds some light on the precipitation sequence in Al–Mg–Zn–Cu alloys and is greatly helpful for designing age-hardening Al–Mg based alloys.

Abstract:The effect of morphology of the long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase on mechanical properties of the Mg-7Gd-3Y-1Nd-1Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) alloy have been studied. The results reveal that the block-like 14H-LPSO phases in and near grain boundaries can be formed during heat treatment at high temperature, but low temperatures is conducive to form the needle-like 14H-LPSO phases within α-Mg grains. During heat treatment at fixed temperature for different time, the preferential nucleation sites of the 14H-LPSO phases are located in grain boundaries, then the14H-LPSO phases grow into the α-Mg matrix in the form of needle-like, the needle-like 14H-LPSO phases gradually decrease its length after growing a certain stage, at last the needle-like 14H-LPSO phases disappear completely. The decomposition of the block-like 14H-LPSO phases is found during furnace cooling after homogenization. After decomposition of the block-like 14H-LPSO phases, the rapid diffusion of Zn atoms into α-Mg matrix leads to form the needle-like 14H-LPSO phases within α-Mg matrix, but the retention of RE atoms in grain boundaries results in forming the Mg-RE particles. After extrusion and subsequent ageing, it is found that the alloy with the needle-like 14H-LPSO phases exhibit superior elongation than the alloy without the needle-like 14H-LPSO phase. The precipitates of peak-aged alloys are studied by TEM. The <112−0>α demonstrates that the stacking faults can be observed, the serious lattice distortion appears near the stacking fault. The [0001] zone axis shows that the β′ and a new rod phase are found, and the enrichment of RE atoms are detected in the two phase by HADDF-STEM. It seems to be that the rod phase can be subdivided into a plurality of mutually parallel structure unit.

Abstract:A new Mg-Sn-Zn based alloy modified with a small amount of Ag exhibits a significantly higher aging peak than that of the base alloy and at a considerably shorter aging time. The enhanced aging response of the Ag-modified alloy is ascribed to the precipitation of densely distributed MgZn2 needles and Mg2Sn plates stimulated by the Ag. A wide and low plateau behind the hardness peak could be associated with rod-shaped precipitates of the orthorhombic Mg54Ag17 phase, aligned with the hexagonal axis of the Mg matrix.

Abstract:This paper describes the crystallographic features of a platelet-shaped precipitate that forms in the early stage of age hardening of Mg alloys containing rare-earth elements in the Ce subgroup. Transmission electron microscopy combined with computer simulation revealed that the precipitate, the habit plane of which is a {1100} matrix prism plane, is morphologically analogous to Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Cu alloys, that is two dimensional, but possesses an ordered structure based on the D019 superlattice. The precipitate also contains periodically arranged atomic steps that are similar to antiphase boundaries in ordered alloys. These periodic steps result in a split of superlattice reflections similar to that observed in diffraction patterns obtained from a long-period superlattice such as CuAu II.

Abstract:A high strength and ductile Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy was designed and fabricated. The local strain evolution of the alloys during plastic deformation was analyzed using high-resolution digital image correlation (DIC). The results showed that the β particles, nano-sized γ' phases, and LPSO phases were distributed in the as-extruded alloy and a bimodal microstructure was exhibited, including elongated un-dynamic recrystallized grains and fine dynamic recrystallized grains. With increasing extrusion ratio, the grain size remained, with the volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization of the as-extruded alloy increasing from 30% to 75%, and the as-extruded alloy exhibited a high strength-ductility synergy, which is attributed to the grain refinement, extensive β particles, and elongated block-shaped LPSO phases. The strain evolution analysis showed that a strain-transfer from un-DRXed regions to adjacent DRXed regions and LPSO phases can promote uniform plastic deformation, which tends to improve the ductility of the alloy.

Abstract:The intermetallic phases of as-cast and annealed Mg-5Gd-3.5Ga (at.%) alloys were characterized by means of electron microscopies. Coherent and incoherent 18R long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases with α-Mg were observed in the alloys and the high diffusion coefficient of Ga was the key factor for the appearance of incoherent LPSO phases. Segregation and <math>βF'</math> phases were observed in the peak-aged samples, which contributed to the large improvements of microhardness and compression properties after heat treatment. In addition, the GdMgGa phase with a hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The incoherent LPSO phases provided a new way of strengthening the mechanical properties of Mg alloys instead of introducing dispersive LPSO phases only.
