Abstract:This note presents a calculus proof of the famous Pythagorean theorem, which has been proved in more than 350 different ways by using geometric arguments since the first proof given by Pythagoras (565-495 BC). The proof presented here also involves function concepts in such a way that it provides a rather straightforward argument.

Abstract:We provide an alternative unified approach for proving the Pythagorean theorem (in dimension $2$ and higher), the law of sines and the law of cosines, based on the concept of shape derivative. The idea behind the proofs is very simple: we translate a triangle along a specific direction and compute the resulting change in area. Equating the change in area to zero yields the statements of the three aforementioned theorems.

Abstract:The heating of magnetized plasma by propagation of Alfven waves is calculated as a function of the magnetic field spectral density. The results can be applied to evaluate the heating power of the solar corona at known data from satellites' magnetometers. This heating rate can be incorporated in global models for heating of the solar corona and creation of the solar wind. The final formula for the heating power is illustrated with a model spectral density of the magnetic field obtained by analysis of the Voyager 1 mission results. The influence of high frequency dissipative modes is also taken into account and it is concluded that for evaluation of the total coronal heating it is necessary to know the spectral density of the fluctuating component of the magnetic field up to the frequency of electron-proton collisions.

A Non-Existence Property of Pythagorean Triangles with a 3-D Application

Abstract:After the introduction, in section 2 we state the well known parametric formulas that describe the entire family of Pythagorean triples. In section 3, we list four well known results from number theory, used later in the paper. in section 2, we prove two propositions. Proposition 1 says that the diophantine equation z^2=x^4+4y^4, has no solutions in positive integers x,y, and z. We then use Proposition 1, to prove the insolvability of a certain four-variable diophantine system, which is Proposition 2. In Section 5, we present some examplesof pairs of Pythagorean triangles with a common hypotenuse. In Section 6, we use Proposition 2 to prove Theorem 1: There exists no pair of Pythagorean triangles such that the leg of largest length in the first triangle is the hypotenuse of the second triangle; and in addition, with the leg of smallest length in the first triangle; having the same length as a leg in the second triangle. in Section 7, we present information on Pythagorean boxes, and we describe how to generate infinitely many Pythagorean boxes with a face diagonal of integral length. Finally, in Section 8, we apply Proposition 2 to prove Theorem 2: There exists no Pythagorean box with a pair of congruent (or opposite) faces being squares. And with the four diagonals of equal length in another pair of opposite faces, also having integral length.

Abstract:In a recent paper Vinay, Shweta, and Harshitha use Ramanujan's theta functions to prove several trigonometric equalities. Elementary proofs for some of these equalities were given by the author and Zeilberger, then for all but one by Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu. The remaining equality was proved in the same paper of Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu in a non-totally elementary way, in that it uses a result of Gauss in cyclotomy: here we give an elementary proof of the same equality. Also we show how to use automated tools to discover and prove some generalizations.

Abstract:A proof of several identities of Ramanujan involving theta functions of level $7$ is given which uses a specific modular function for $\Gamma_1(7)$ and Klein's projective representation of $PSL(2,7)$ into $PSL(3, \mathbb{C})$. Four identities of Berndt and Zhang are derived as algebraic corollaries of the main proof.

Abstract:The authors present a method that can produce traditional proofs for a class of geometry statements whose hypotheses can be described constructively and whose conclusions can be represented by polynomial equations of three kinds of geometry quantities: ratios of lengths, areas of triangles, and Pythagoras differences of triangles. This class covers a large portion of the geometry theorems about straight lines and circles. The method involves the elimination of the constructed points from the conclusion using a few basic geometry propositions. The authors' program, Euclid, implements this method and can produce traditional proofs of many hard geometry theorems. Currently, it has produced proofs of 400 nontrivial theorems entirely automatically, and the proofs produced are generally short and readable. This method seems to be the first one to produce traditional proofs for hard geometry theorems efficiently

Abstract:This paper presents a method of producing readable proofs for theorems in solid geometry. The method is for a class of constructive geometry statements about straight lines, planes, circles, and spheres. The key idea of the method is to eliminate points from the conclusion of a geometric statement using several (fixed) high-level basic propositions about the signed volumes of tetrahedrons and Pythagorean differences of triangles. We have implemented the algorithm, and more than 80 examples from solid geometry have been used to test the program. Our program is efficient and the proofs produced by it are generally short and readable.

Abstract:In this paper, we point out that there are at lest six theorems in physics sharing common virtue of Pythagoras theorem, so that it is possible to string these theorems together with the Pythagoras theorem for physics teaching, the six theorems are Newton's three laws of motion, universal gravitational force, Coulomb's law, and the formula of relativistic dynamics. Knowing the internal relationships between them, which have never been clearly revealed by other author, will benefit the logic of physics teaching.

Abstract:How to automatically generate short and easy-to-understand proofs for geometric theorems has long been an issue of concern in mathematics education. A novel automated geometric theorem proving method based on complex number identities is proposed in this paper, which acts as a bridge between geometry and algebra. According to the proposed method, the geometric relations in the given proposition are first transformed into a complex number expression, then the complex number identity is generated by the elimination method; finally, the closure property under all four operations of real numbers is employed to prove the proposition. A test on more than 300 geometric problems shows that the proposed method is highly effective, and the corresponding proofs are short, with obvious geometric meaning.

Abstract:We examine a class of geometric theorems on cyclic 2n-gons. We prove that if we take n disjoint pairs of sides, each pair separated by an even number of polygon sides, then there is a linear combination of the angles between those sides which is constant. We present a formula for the linear combination, which provides a theorem statement in terms of those angles. We describe a program which uses this result to generate new geometry proof problems and their solutions.

Abstract:We present a method which can produce traditional proofs for a class of constructive geometry statements in Euclidean geometry. The method is a mechanization of the traditional area method used by many geometers. The key idea of our method is to eliminate dependent (constructed) points in a geometry statement using a few basic geometry propositions about the area of triangles. The method has been implemented. Our program, calledEuclid, can produce traditional proofs of many hard geometry theorems such as Pappus' theorem, Pascal's theorem, Gauss point theorem, and the Pascal conic theorem. Currently, it has produced proofs of 110 nontrivial theoremsentirely automatically. The proofs produced byEuclid are elegant, short (often shorter than the proofs given by geometers) and understandable even to high school students. This method seems to be the first that can produce traditional proofs for hard geometry theorems automatically.
