Abstract:We use variational methods to derive Hadamard-type formulae for the eigenvalues of a class of elliptic operators on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$. We then apply the latter in the following context. Consider a family of elliptic operators which is parametrized by either the set of all $\mathcal{C}^r$--Riemannian metrics on $M$ or the set of all $\mathcal{C}^r$--diffeomorphisms on a domain into $M$. In either case we prove that if a subset of the parametrizations set yields a simple spectrum of the operator, then it is necessarily a generic subset. We also analyse the behavior of the eigenvalues when the metric evolves along the Ricci flow on a closed Riemannian manifold, and we prove, under a suitable hypothesis, that they increase

On notions of $p$-parabolic capacity and applications

Abstract:We consider different notions of capacity related to the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation. Our focus is on a variational notion, which is consistent in the full range $1<p<\infty$. For such a notion we show some basic properties as well as its connection to other notions of capacity presented in the literature, and to a certain parabolic version of the Hausdorff measure. As applications, we use the introduced variational notion of capacity to study polar sets and removability results for supersolutions.

Abstract:We provide a full series expansion of a generalization of the so-called $u$-capacity related to the Dirichlet-Laplacian in dimension three and higher, extending previous results of the authors, and of the authors together with Virginie Bonnaillie-Noël, dealing with the planar case. We apply the result in order to study the asymptotic behavior of perturbed eigenvalues when Dirichlet conditions are imposed on a small regular subset of the domain of the eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:We consider a conformally invariant functional of the space of Riemannian metrics, compute its first variational formula and obtain some examples of its critical point. Then we compute the second variation of the conformally invariant functional about the above examples and get some stability results. These results extend theorems of Kobayashi (J Math Soc Jpn 37:373–389, 1985).

Abstract:In this paper, our focus lies on a fundamental geometric invariant known as Riesz capacity, which holds an essential position in potential theory. We establish the Hadamard variational formula for Riesz capacity of convex bodies. As a meaningful application, we derive a Serrin-type symmetry result for an overdetermined problem.

Abstract:This is the final part of a series of papers where we study perturbations of divergence form second order elliptic operators by first and zero order terms, whose complex coefficients lie in critical spaces, via the method of layer potentials. In particular, we show that the well-posedness (with natural non-tangential maximal function estimates) of the Dirichlet, Neumann and regularity problems for complex Hermitian, block form, or constant-coefficient divergence form elliptic operators in the upper half-space are all stable under such perturbations. Due to the lack of the classical De Giorgi–Nash–Moser theory in our setting, our method to prove the non-tangential maximal function estimates relies on a completely new argument: We obtain a certain weak- " $N<s$ " estimate, which we eventually couple with square function bounds, weighted extrapolation theory, and a bootstrapping argument to recover the full bound. Finally, we show the existence and uniqueness of solutions in a relatively broad class. As a corollary, we claim the first results in an unbounded domain concerning the -solvability of boundary value problems for the magnetic Schrödinger operator when the magnetic potential and the electric potential V are accordingly small in the norm of a scale-invariant Lebesgue space.</s\)<>

Variational principles for metric mean dimension with potential of level sets

Abstract:We establish three variational principles for the upper metric mean dimension with potential of level sets of continuous maps in terms of the entropy of partitions and Katok's entropy of the underlying system. Our results hold for dynamical systems exhibiting the specification property. Moreover, we apply our results to study the metric mean dimension of suspension flows.

Abstract:Analogues of Hadamard's classical variational formula are presented for the Dirichlet integral of a normalized harmonic function under deformations of its domain of definition. Variational formulae for quadratic forms with coefficients depending on the inner radii, Robin radii, Green's functions and Robin functions of the domains under consideration are also presented. Variational methods for scaled functionals with applications to the Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equation

Abstract:We develop novel variational methods for solving scaled equations that do not have the mountain pass geometry, classical linking geometry based on linear subspaces, or $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, and therefore cannot be solved using classical variational arguments. Our contributions here include new critical group estimates for scaled functionals, nonlinear saddle point and linking geometries based on scaling, a notion of local linking based on scaling, and scaling-based multiplicity results for symmetric functionals. We develop these methods in an abstract setting involving scaled operators and scaled eigenvalue problems. Applications to subcritical and critical Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equations are given.

Abstract:For a family of vector-valued bifunctions, we introduce the notion of sequentially lower monotonity, which is strictly weaker than the lower semi-continuity of the second variables of the bifunctions. Then, we give a general version of vectorial Ekeland variational principle (briefly, denoted by EVP) for a system of equilibrium problems, where the sequentially lower monotone objective bifunction family is defined on products of sequentially lower complete spaces (concerning sequentially lower complete spaces, see Zhu et al. (2013)), and taking values in a quasi-ordered locally convex space. Besides, the perturbation consists of a subset of the ordering cone and a family { p i } i ∈ I of negative functions satisfying for each i ∈ I , p i ( x i , y i ) = 0 if and only if x i = y i . From the general version, we can deduce several particular equilibrium versions of EVP, which can be applied to show the existence of solutions for countable systems of equilibrium problems. In particular, we obtain a general existence result of solutions for countable systems of equilibrium problems in the setting of sequentially lower complete spaces. By weakening the compactness of domains and the lower semi-continuity of objective bifunctions, we extend and improve some known existence results of solutions for countable system of equilibrium problems in the setting of complete metric spaces (or Fréchet spaces). When the domains are non-compact, by using the theory of angelic spaces (see Floret (1980)), we generalize some existence results on solutions for countable systems of equilibrium problems by extending the framework from reflexive Banach spaces to the strong duals of weakly compactly generated spaces.

Abstract:In this work we explain the relevance of the Differential Galois Theory in the semiclassical (or WKB) quantification of some two degree of freedom potentials. The key point is that the semiclassical path integral quantification around a particular solution depends on the variational equation around that solution: a very well-known object in dynamical systems and variational calculus. Then, as the variational equation is a linear ordinary differential system, it is possible to apply the Differential Galois Theory to study its solvability in closed form. We obtain closed form solutions for the semiclassical quantum fluctuations around constant velocity solutions for some systems like the classical Hermite/Verhulst, Bessel, Legendre, and Lamé potentials. We remark that some of the systems studied are not integrable, in the Liouville–Arnold sense.

Abstract:Let be a second-order homogeneous elliptic differential operator in , , with constant complex coefficients. Removable singularities of -bounded solutions of the equation are described in terms of the capacities , where is the classical harmonic capacity from potential theory. It is shown for the corresponding values of that and are commensurable for all . Some ideas due to Tolsa are used in the proof. Various consequences of this commensurability are presented; in particular, criteria for the uniform approximation of functions by solutions of the equation are stated in terms of harmonic capacities. In the present paper, we focus on two applications of the variational principle: 1. We provide a representation formula for the solution semigroup of the evolutionary equation w(t)(x, t) + H(x, w(x, t), w(x)(x, t)) = 0; 2. We study the ergodic problem of the stationary equation via the solution semigroup. More precisely, we find pairs (u, c) with u is an element of C(M, R) and c is an element of R which, in the viscosity sense, satisfy the stationary partial differential equation H(x, u(x), u(x)(x)) = c. A note on the capacity estimate in metastability for generic configurations

Abstract:In this paper we further develop the ideas from Geometric Function Theory initially introduced in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.13206" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.13206">arXiv:2206.13206</a>], to derive capacity estimate in metastability for arbitrary configurations. The novelty of this paper is twofold. First, the graph theoretical connection enables us to exactly compute the pre-factor in the capacity. Second, we complete the method from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.13206" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.13206">arXiv:2206.13206</a>] by providing an upper bound using Geometric Function Theory together with Thompson's principle, avoiding explicit constructions of test functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore various equivalences of Ekeland's variational principle within the framework of group-invariant mappings. We introduce and analyze several key theorems, including the Drop theorem, the Petal theorem, Caristi-Kirk fxed-point theorem, and Takahashi's theorem, all of them within this context. Moreover, we extend the classical Drop theorem and Petal theorem to a more generalized setting. We also demonstrate the practical signifcance of these findings through numerous applications to diverse areas of mathematics. In particular, in the context of partial differential equations, we explore their implications on the solution of the Plateau problem, and in control theory. We also extend the classical Pontyargin maximum principle.

Abstract:In this article we study convex non-autonomous variational problems with differential forms and corresponding function spaces. We introduce a general framework for constructing counterexamples to the Lavrentiev gap, which we apply to several models, including the double phase, borderline case of double phase potential, and variable exponent. The results for the borderline case of double phase potential provide new insights even for the scalar case, i.e., variational problems with 0-forms.

Abstract:We propose a metriplectic reformulation of the Lagrangian variational formulation for non-equilibrium thermodynamics. We prove that solutions to these constrained variational principles can be generated by the sum of a classic Poisson bracket and a metriplectic 4-bracket, that takes the Hamiltonian and the entropy as generators. We study different cases: simple systems, discrete systems, Euler-Poincaré reduced systems and systems with no symplectic part. Several example are shown, including infinite dimensional problems arising from continuum mechanics.
