Abstract:We develop novel variational methods for solving scaled equations that do not have the mountain pass geometry, classical linking geometry based on linear subspaces, or $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, and therefore cannot be solved using classical variational arguments. Our contributions here include new critical group estimates for scaled functionals, nonlinear saddle point and linking geometries based on scaling, a notion of local linking based on scaling, and scaling-based multiplicity results for symmetric functionals. We develop these methods in an abstract setting involving scaled operators and scaled eigenvalue problems. Applications to subcritical and critical Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equations are given.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop new variational methods in specific types of nonlinear partial differential equations. These equations do not have the traditional mountain - pass geometry, the linking geometry based on linear subspaces or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, so they cannot be solved using classical variational methods. Specifically, the author focuses on equations with scaling properties, such as the Schrödinger - Poisson - Slater equation. ### The main contributions of the paper include: 1. **New critical group estimates**: For functional functionals with scaling properties, a new method of critical group estimation is proposed. 2. **Nonlinear saddle points and linking geometries**: Based on the scaling properties, new nonlinear saddle point and linking geometric structures are proposed. 3. **The concept of local linking**: The concept of local linking based on scaling is introduced. 4. **Multiplicity results of symmetric functional functionals**: Multiplicity results of symmetric functional functionals based on scaling are proposed. ### Application examples: - **Sub - critical case**: The existence and multiplicity results of the sub - critical Schrödinger - Poisson - Slater equation are studied. - **Critical case**: The existence and multiplicity results of the critical Schrödinger - Poisson - Slater equation are studied. - **Sub - scaling equations close to zero**: The existence and multiplicity results of sub - scaling equations close to zero are studied. ### Specific equation forms: Consider the following type of Schrödinger - Poisson - Slater equation: \[-\Delta u+\left(\frac{1}{4\pi|x|}\star u^{2}\right)u = f(|x|, u)\quad\text{in}\ \mathbb{R}^{3}\] where $f$ is a Carathéodory function that satisfies the growth condition: \[|f(|x|, t)|\leq a_{1}|t|^{q_{1}-1}+a_{2}|t|^{q_{2}-1}+a(x)\] for some constants $a_{1}, a_{2}>0$, $18/7 < q_{1}<q_{2}\leq6$, and $a\in L^{r}(\mathbb{R}^{3})$ and $r\in[6/5, 18/11)$. ### Research methods: - **Variational framework**: By defining an appropriate variational framework, the problem is transformed into finding the critical points of the functional. - **Scaling operator**: The scaling operator and the corresponding variational principle are introduced to deal with equations with scaling properties. - **Critical point theorems**: A series of abstract critical point theorems based on scaling are proved for dealing with nonlinear equations. ### Main conclusions: - **Sub - critical case**: When $\lambda$ is not an eigenvalue, the existence of a non - trivial solution is proved. - **Critical case**: When $\lambda$ is greater than the first eigenvalue, the existence of two non - trivial solutions is proved. - **Super - scaling case**: Under certain conditions, the existence of a non - trivial solution at a positive energy level is proved. Through these methods, the author provides a unified variational method that can deal with different types of nonlinear equations, thus expanding the application range of the classical variational theory.
