Abstract:Kristiansen and Murwanashyaka recently proved that Robinson arithmetic Q is interpretable in an elementary theory of full binary trees, T. We prove that, conversely, T is interpretable in Q by producing a formal interpretation of T in an elementary concatenation theory, thereby also establishing mutual interpretability of T with several well-known weak essentially undecidable theories of numbers, strings and sets. We also in introduce a "hybrid" elementary theory of strings and trees and establish its mutual interpretability with Robinson's weak arithmetic R, the weak theory of binary trees WT of Kristiansen and Murwanashyaka and a weak concatenation theory of Higuchi and Hirohata.

Abstract:We introduce a first-order theory $\mathsf{Seq}$ which is mutually interpretable with Robinson's $\mathsf{Q}$. The universe of a standard model for $\mathsf{Seq}$ consists of sequences. We prove that $\mathsf{Seq}$ directly interprets the adjuctive set theory $\mathsf{AST}$, and we prove that $\mathsf{Seq}$ interprets the tree theory $\mathsf{T}$ and the set theory $\mathsf{AST + EXT}$.

Abstract:We investigate subsystems $COM_{fcn}$, $COMI_{fcn}$ and $PRA_{fcn}$ of the elementary theory of functions $ETF$, the base theory for countable strict reverse mathematics. We show that inductions on any variable for unary, binary and ternary functions are pairwise equivalent over $COM_{fcn}$. We prove that weakened primitive recursion axiom $WPRA$ is equivalent to primitive recursion axiom $PRA$ over $COMI_{fcn}$. We show that permutation axiom and minimization axioms $MIN^1$, $MIN^2$, $MIN^3$ are pairwise equivalent over $PRA_{fcn}$. Thus, we present several equivalent axiomatizations of $ETF$.
Minimal signatures with undecidability of representability by binary relations

Abstract:A semigroup of binary relations (under composition) on a set $X$ is \emph{complemented} if it is closed under the taking of complements within $X\times X$. We resolve a 1991 problem of Boris Schein by showing that the class of finite unary semigroups that are representable as complemented semigroups of binary relations is undecidable, so composition with complementation forms a minimal subsignature of Tarski's relation algebra signature that has undecidability of representability. In addition we prove similar results for semigroups of binary relations endowed with unary operations returning the kernel and cokernel of a relation. We generalise to signatures which may include arbitrary, definable operations and provide a chain of weaker and weaker signatures, each definable in the previous signature, each having undecidability of representability, but whose limit signature includes composition only, which corresponds to the well known, decidable and finitely axiomatised variety of semigroups. All these results are also proved for representability as binary relations over a finite set.

Abstract:In this paper we study admissible extensions of several theories T of reverse mathematics. The idea is that in such an extension the structure M=(N,S,∈) of the natural numbers and collection of sets of natural numbers S has to obey the axioms of T while simultaneously one also has a set-theoretic world with transfinite levels erected on top of M governed by the axioms of Kripke-Platek set theory, KP . In some respects, the admissible extension of T can be viewed as a proof-theoretic analog of Barwise's admissible cover of an arbitrary model of set theory; see [2] . However, by contrast, the admissible extension of T is usually not a conservative extension of T . Owing to the interplay of T and KP , either theory's axioms may force new sets of natural to exists which in turn may engender yet new sets of naturals on account of the axioms of the other. The paper discerns a general pattern though. It turns out that for many familiar theories T , the second order part of the admissible cover of T equates to T augmented by transfinite induction over all initial segments of the Bachmann-Howard ordinal. Technically, the paper uses a novel type of ordinal analysis, expanding that for KP to the higher set-theoretic universe while at the same time treating the world of subsets of N as an unanalyzed class-sized urelement structure. Among the systems of reverse mathematics, for which we determine the admissible extension, are Π11-CA0 and ATR0 as well as the theory of bar induction, BI .

Abstract:The family of relevant logics can be faceted by a hierarchy of increasingly fine-grained variable sharing properties -- requiring that in valid entailments $A\to B$, some atom must appear in both $A$ and $B$ with some additional condition (e.g., with the same sign or nested within the same number of conditionals). In this paper, we consider an incredibly strong variable sharing property of lericone relevance that takes into account the path of negations and conditionals in which an atom appears in the parse trees of the antecedent and consequent. We show that this property of lericone relevance holds of the relevant logic $\mathbf{BM}$ (and that a related property of faithful lericone relevance holds of $\mathbf{B}$) and characterize the largest fragments of classical logic with these properties. Along the way, we consider the consequences for lericone relevance for the theory of subject-matter, for Logan's notion of hyperformalism, and for the very definition of a relevant logic itself.

Abstract:We consider a simple modal logic whose non-modal part has conjunction and disjunction as connectives and whose modalities come in adjoint pairs, but are not in general closure operators. Despite absence of negation and implication, and of axioms corresponding to the characteristic axioms of (e.g.) T, S4 and S5, such logics are useful, as shown in previous work by Baltag, Coecke and the first author, for encoding and reasoning about information and misinformation in multi-agent systems. For such a logic we present an algebraic semantics, using lattices with agent-indexed families of adjoint pairs of operators, and a cut-free sequent calculus. The calculus exploits operators on sequents, in the style of "nested" or "tree-sequent" calculi; cut-admissibility is shown by constructive syntactic methods. The applicability of the logic is illustrated by reasoning about the muddy children puzzle, for which the calculus is augmented with extra rules to express the facts of the muddy children scenario.

Finite models for positive combinatorial and exponential algebra

Abstract:We use high girth, high chromatic number hypergraphs to show that there are finite models of the equational theory of the semiring of nonnegative integers whose equational theory has no finite axiomatisation, and show this also holds if factorial, fixed base exponentiation and operations for binomial coefficients are adjoined. We also derive the decidability of the equational logical entailment operator $\vdash$ for antecedents true on $\mathbb{N}$ by way of a form of the finite model property. Two appendices contain additional basic development of combinatorial operations. Amongst the observations are an eventual dominance well-ordering of combinatorial functions and consequent representation of the ordinal $\epsilon_0$ in terms of factorial functions; the equivalence of the equational logic of combinatorial algebra over the natural numbers and over the positive reals; and a candidate list of elementary axioms.

Abstract:We formulate a definition of the existence property that works with "structural" set theories, in the mode of ETCS (the elementary theory of the category of sets). We show that a range of structural set theories, when formulated using constructive logic, satisfy the disjunction, numerical existence, and existence properties; in particular, intuitionist ETCS, formulated with separation and Shulman's replacement of contexts axiom, satisfies these properties. As a consequence of this, we show that, working constructively, replacement of contexts is strictly weaker than collection.

Enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities

Abstract:Lawvere's algebraic theories, or Lawvere theories, underpin a categorical approach to general algebra, and Lawvere's adjunction between semantics and algebraic structure leads to an equivalence between Lawvere theories and finitary monads on the category of sets. Several authors have transported these ideas to a variety of settings, including contexts of category theory enriched in a symmetric monoidal closed category. In this paper, we develop a general axiomatic framework for enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities. Not only do we establish a simultaneous generalization of the monad-theory equivalences previously developed in the settings of Lawvere (1963), Linton (1966), Dubuc (1970), Borceux-Day (1980), Power (1999), Nishizawa-Power (2009), Lack-Rosický (2011), Lucyshyn-Wright (2016), and Bourke-Garner (2019), but also we establish a structure-semantics theorem that generalizes those given in the first four of these works while applying also to the remaining five, for which such a result has not previously been developed. Furthermore, we employ our axiomatic framework to establish broad new classes of examples of enriched monad-theory equivalences and structure-semantics adjunctions for subcategories of arities enriched in locally bounded closed categories, including various convenient closed categories that are relevant in topology and analysis and need not be locally presentable.

Algebraic Reasoning over Relational Structures

Abstract:Many important computational structures involve an intricate interplay between algebraic features (given by operations on the underlying set) and relational features (taking account of notions such as order or distance). This paper investigates algebras over relational structures axiomatized by an infinitary Horn theory, which subsume, for example, partial algebras, various incarnations of ordered algebras, quantitative algebras introduced by Mardare, Panangaden, and Plotkin, and their recent extension to generalized metric spaces and lifted algebraic signatures by Mio, Sarkis, and Vignudelli. To this end, we develop the notion of clustered equation, which is inspired by Mardare et al.'s basic conditional equations in the theory of quantitative algebras, at the level of generality of arbitrary relational structures, and we prove that it is equivalent to an abstract categorical form of equation earlier introduced by Milius and Urbat. Our main results are a family of Birkhoff-type variety theorems (classifying the expressive power of clustered equations) and an exactness theorem (classifying abstract equations by a congruence property).

Abstract:It has long been known that (classical) Peano arithmetic is, in some strong sense, "equivalent" to the variant of (classical) Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (including choice) in which the axiom of infinity is replaced by its negation. The intended model of the latter is the set of hereditarily finite sets. The connection between the theories is so tight that they may be taken as notational variants of each other. Our purpose here is to develop and establish a constructive version of this. We present an intuitionistic theory of the hereditarily finite sets, and show that it is definitionally equivalent to Heyting Arithmetic HA , in a sense to be made precise. Our main target theory, the intuitionistic small set theory SST is remarkably simple, and intuitive. It has just one non-logical primitive, for membership, and three straightforward axioms plus one axiom scheme. We locate our theory within intuitionistic mathematics generally.

Finitely accessible arboreal adjunctions and Hintikka formulae

Abstract:Arboreal categories provide an axiomatic framework in which abstract notions of bisimilarity and back-and-forth games can be defined. They act on extensional categories, typically consisting of relational structures, via arboreal adjunctions. In the examples, equivalence of structures in various fragments of infinitary first-order logic (with finitely many variables) can be captured by transferring bisimilarity along the adjunction. In most applications, the categories involved are locally finitely presentable and the adjunctions finitely accessible. Drawing on this insight, we identify the expressive power of this class of adjunctions. We show that the ranks of back-and-forth games in the arboreal category are definable by formulae à la Hintikka. Thus, the relation between extensional objects induced by bisimilarity is always coarser than equivalence in infinitary first-order logic. Our approach relies on Gabriel-Ulmer duality for locally finitely presentable categories, and Hodges' word-constructions.

An isomorphism theorem for models of weak König’s lemma without primitive recursion

Abstract:We prove that if (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are countable models of the theory \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} such that \mathrm{I}\Sigma_{1}(A) fails for some A \in \mathcal{X}\cap \mathcal{Y} , then (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are isomorphic. As a consequence, the analytic hierarchy collapses to \Delta^{1}_{1} provably in \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} , and \mathrm{WKL} is the strongest \Pi^{1}_{2} statement that is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} . Applying our results to the \Delta^{0}_{n} -definable sets in models of \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} that also satisfy an appropriate relativization of weak König’s lemma, we prove that for each n \ge 1 , the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is computably enumerable. In contrast, we prove that the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is \Pi_{2} -complete. This answers a question of Towsner. We also show that \mathrm{RCA}_{0} + \mathrm{RT}^{2}_{2} is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} if and only if it is conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} with respect to \forall \Pi^{0}_{5} sentences.

Abstract:It is well known that ZFC, despite its usefulness as a foundational theory for mathematics, has two unwanted features: it cannot be written down explicitly due to its infinitely many axioms, and it has a countable model due to the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem. This paper presents the axioms one has to accept to get rid of these two features. For that matter, some twenty axioms are formulated in a nonstandard first-order language with countable many constants: to this collection of axioms is associated a universe of discourse consisting of a class of objects, each of which is a set, and a class of arrows, each of which is a function. The axioms of ZF are derived from this finite axiom scheme, and it is shown that it does not have a countable model--if it has a model at all, that is. Furthermore, the axioms of category theory are proven to hold: the present universe may therefore serve as an ontological basis for category theory. However, it has not been investigated whether any of the soundness and completeness properties hold for the present theory: the inevitable conclusion is therefore that only further research can establish whether the present results indeed constitute an advancement in the foundations of mathematics.

Rich doctrines and Henkin's Theorem

Abstract:We find a possible interpretation of Henkin's Theorem in the language of existential implicational doctrines. Under some smallness assumption, starting from an implicational existential doctrine, with non-trivial fibers, we construct a new doctrine which is rich -- meaning that for every formula $\varphi(x)$ there is a constant $c$ such that $\exists x\varphi(x)$ has the same truth-value of $\varphi(c)$ -- and consistent. To obtain this result, we add a suitable amount of constants and axioms to the starting doctrine. We then show that a rich consistent doctrine admits an appropriate morphism towards the doctrine of subsets -- a model. Henkin's Theorem for doctrines follows from these two results, modeling our proof on the main lines of the original theorem.

Abstract:We present a new fragment of axiomatic set theory for pure sets and for the iteration of power sets within given transitive sets. It turns out that this formal system admits an interesting hierarchy of models with true membership relation and with only finite or countably infinite ordinals.
