Abstract:Interconnection and damping assignment is a controller design methodology that regulates the behaviour of dynamical systems assigning a desired port-Hamiltonian structure to the closed-loop. A key step for the application of the method is the solution of the so-called matching equation that, in the case of nonlinear systems, is a partial differential equation. It has recently been shown that for linear systems the problem boils down to the solution of a linear matrix inequality that, moreover, is feasible if and only if the system is stabilisable – making the method universally applicable. It has also been shown that if we narrow the class of assignable structures – e.g. to mechanical instead of the larger port-Hamiltonian – the problem is still translated to a linear matrix inequality, but now stabilisability is not sufficient to ensure its feasibility. It is additionally required that the uncontrolled modes are simple and lie on the jω axis, which is consistent with the considered scenario of mechanical systems without friction. The purpose of this article is to present these important results in a tutorial, self-contained form – invoking only basic linear algebra methods.
Two-degree-of-freedom Controller Design for MIMO Systems with Multiple Time Delays Based on Inversing Decoupling

Abstract:In this paper, a two-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) controller design method for multi-inputs multi-outputs (MIMO) system with multiple time delays based on inversing decoupling is proposed. Firstly, an inversing decoupling method based on the factorization of the plant is developed. Secondly, the H2 optimal controller design method is applied to the decoupled single-input/single-output (SISO) system after the system has been decoupled. Finally, a TDOF controller is designed for the decoupled closed-loop system. Compared with other developed methods, the proposed design method has two main advantages. One is that the design procedure is simple and the obtained controllers are given in analytical form. The other is that better performance can be achieved since the TDOF control structure can isolate the disturbance from the reference. Simulations are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design approach.

Abstract:A solution for designing the controllers in the case of systems with uncertainty is offered by the robust control theory, which can be generalized to MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems. Some principles of the design methodologies of the robust controllers based on H2 and H-infinity synthesis are presented in this paper and applied on a multiple-input multiple-output system to achieve good performances and stability in the presence of modeling errors. For this purpose, the SISO (single-input single-output) closed-loop control diagrams are first adapted to MIMO systems. The study case used in the paper consists of the typical example of two-coupled tanks process which has two inputs and two outputs. The plant mathematical model includes also the possible additive uncertainty of the hydraulic resistances of the outlet and cross-coupling valves. The design of the H2 and H-infinity controllers and the study of the behaviors of the global systems were made in the Matlab environment using the Robust Control Toolbox.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new analytical method for multivariable control design for a class of stable linear multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) processes. By using the unity feedback structure, a multivariable controller with full matrix form is derived based on Internal Model Control (IMC) theory. The proposed design approach provides a single adjustable parameter for each control loop. Two analytical computation methods are developed to obtain the control parameters according to the robust stability condition and nominal performance. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control and tuning scheme.

Abstract:The stabilization of the system with multiple time delays is much more difficult than that of the rational system since the delay multiplicity complicates the system analysis. For an arbitrarily-given linear time-invariant (LTI) multiple time-delay plant, the stabilization problems of the PID controllers are solved in this paper. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of general single-input and single-output (SISO) systems and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems with multiple time delays are presented by considering the argument transformation of closed-loop characteristic function and real and imaginary roots of related quasipolynomial in a sufficiently large frequency range. Based on such the conditions, analytical algorithms are then proposed to compute the complete stabilizing sets of low-order controllers. For the MIMO system with multiple time delays, firstly, MIMO systems are decomposed into several independent single loop subsystems with multiple time delays by the method of equivalent transfer function (ETF). Then, the stabilizing PID controllers for all independent single-loop subsystems are presented on the basic of the stabilizing result of the PID controller for SISO systems with multiple time delays, from which the stabilizing regions of the PID controllers for MIMO system with multiple time delays can be derived. More importantly, the results accomplished here provide a strong theoretical basic and technical guidance for the low-order controller design and tuning of the system with multiple time delays. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:In this study, an inversion-based robust feedforward-feedback two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) control approach is proposed to improve the tracking performance and robustness for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with uncertainty. The proposed approach enhances trajectory tracking precision by robust-inversion feedforward control and combats the adverse effects caused by system uncertainty, coupling and disturbance by H-infinity mixed sensitivity robust MIMO feedback control. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: (i) a combination of robust diagonal dominance-based static pre-compensation and inversion-based robust feedforword-feedback 2DOF control, (ii) extending the single-input single-output (SISO) robust-inversion-based feedforward control to MIMO system by introducing the optimal coefficients which not only consider the uncertainties of diagonal transfer functions, but also take the non-diagonal elements in MIMO transfer function matrix into account, (iii) a systematic integration of H-infinity mixed sensitivity robust feedback control and inversion feedforward control. A numerical example and simulation results illustrate a better performance obtained by the proposed control approach compared with H-infinity mixed sensitivity robust feedback control and 2DOF control approach combined with the regular SISO robust-inversion-based feedforward control and robust feedback control.

Abstract:A two-degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) decoupling control scheme is proposed for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) processes with time delays. The set-point response and load-disturbance response of each process output can be separately regulated and optimized online. The two respective controller matrices for set-point tracking and load-disturbance rejection are analytically derived based on the H-2 optimal performance specification and rational transfer function approximation. A simplified stability condition is given to check the resulting control system stability, together with a graphical approach, in terms of the multivariable spectral radius stability criterion, to evaluate the robust stability of the control system in the presence of the process additive and multiplicative uncertainties. Correspondingly, an on-line tuning rule for the adjustable parameters of the two controller matrices is given to accommodate the unmodeled process dynamics. Finally, illustrative examples are given to demonstrate the merits of the proposed 2-DOF decoupling control scheme.

Abstract:For linear multivariable discrete-time control systems, a new design approach to robust optimal controllers is developed in this paper. By presenting a new design concept to select row characteristic functions for a multi-variable system, a robust decomposition method is built up to guarantee the normalization of the closed-loop transfer function matrix. The H-infinity robust stability and the optimal time domain indices for the closed-loop system are then achieved simultaneously by utilizing the 1-infinity optimal control approach in its decoupling equivalent system. Finally, optimization and robustness of this digital controller are verified by an on-line application in a paper-making control system for three different indices of quantity and moisture.

Abstract:The problem of designing a robust controller for a multivariable system with significant uncertainty is considered. In particular, the class of uncertainty is represented by a set of finite demensional linear time-invariant models of the system. A physically realizable, finite demensional linear time-invariant controller in unit feedback configuration is designed such that the resulting feedback system simultaneously satisfies performance objectives for all models in the set. The performance objectives considered include not only stability but also regulation, tracking, weak interaction and desirable transcient behaviour. A new approach to a robust controller design which reaches the above objectives is developed in a frequency domain setting, and its effectiveness of this approach is verified by the design and simulation of a papermachine control system. The result exhibits quite satisfactory performances and strong robustness.

Abstract:In this paper, the simultaneous stabilization problem for a set of MIMO plants is discussed and the necessary and sufficient condition for this problem is derived. It is shown that strong stabilization is equivalent to the existence of state feedback matrix F and state observation matrix H such that A + BF + HC + HDF is stable and that the simultaneous stabilizability of two plants is equivalent to finding two compatible state feedback matrix F s and observation matrix H s which is easily realized with computer and that simultaneous stabilizability of r + 1 (r �� 2) plants is equivalent to simultaneous strong stabilizability r - 1 associated plants together with a common stable subplant.

Abstract:A novel MIMO Super-Twisting Algorithm is proposed in this paper for nonlinear systems with relative degree one, having a time and state-varying uncertain control matrix. The uncertainty is represented by a time and state-varying but unknown left matrix factor. Sufficient conditions for stability with full-matrix control gains are established, in contrast to the usual scalar gains. For this a smooth Lyapunov function, based on a passivity interpretation, is used. Moreover, continuous and homogeneous approximations of the classical discontinuous Super-Twisting algorithm are obtained, using a unified analysis method. Moreover, the proposed Super-Twisting algorithm is of the discontinuous type, in contrast to the usual unitary type.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) control scheme for multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) systems with multiple time delays is proposed. First, a novel inversing decoupler design method based on the ideal decoupling is proposed for decoupling the MIMO system with multiple time delays into several same independent single-input/single output (SISO) systems. Then the H2 proportion-integral-derivative (PID) controller based on the internal model control (IMC) is applied to the obtained SISO systems. Finally, the second controller is developed according to the decoupled closed-loop transfer function. Since the decoupled SISO systems are the same, only one PID controller should be designed for the independent SISO systems. The proposed method can simplify the design task significantly. Moreover, because the TDOF control structure can isolate the disturbance from the reference, the controller of the reference loop can be used to improve the reference response independently. Simulations are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design approach.

Abstract:Stability is a critical feature of distributed linear multi-input-multi-output systems. Global asymptotic stability usually can be guaranteed when using decentralised or distributed control architectures, if: (i) conservative controllers are designed, (ii) collective stability conditions are satisfied, or (iii) interaction terms are neutral. This paper extends the collective stability method to incorporate adaptive controllers, and shows that this method is insufficient for systems with large-gain interconnections. Subsequently, we show that global asymptotic stability can be systematically ensured by exploiting vector Lyapunov functions and algebraic Riccati equations. This leads to a scalable distributed architecture where local controllers require information from corresponding subsystems and neighbouring controllers. Conveniently, the communication flow has the same topology as the interconnection graph. Theoretical results are validated through application of the proposed architecture to voltage control of a DC power network.

Abstract:In this paper, we study networked stabilization of a multi-input linear time-invariant (LTI) system closed over a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication system modeled as a MIMO transceiver. The controller and encoder/decoder pair are jointly designed subject to a total power constraint. We obtain an analytic solution to the minimum transmission power required for networked stabilization under coding/control co-design given in terms of the topological entropies of cyclic subsystems of the open-loop plant and the quality of service (QoS) of channel eigenmodes of the MIMO channel. Also, an optimal coding/control co-design procedure is proposed. The results generalize the understandings in the literature concerning parallel additive white noise (AWN) channels. A numerical example is provided to verify the results.

Abstract:Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) processes with time delays commonly appear in chemical and industrial practice. For MIMO processes, a PID decoupling controller is devised based on unity feedback closed-loop control structure and combined with the characteristics of strong robustness of the Desired Dynamic Equation (DDE) method for two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) PID controllers. The design of the PID controller is achieved through setting a static decoupling controller on the input of the controlled process. And for additive and multiplicative uncertainty disturbance usually encountered in practice, the sufficient and necessary condition of guaranteeing robust stability of the control system is analyzed and a determination method is provided based on the spectral radius criterion. This controller can not only achieve a significant decoupling among the nominal responses of system outputs, but also realize the online tuning of adjustable parameter. Comparing with the deficiency of numerical calculation method, this design is simple and widely applicable. Finally, some simulation examples are supplied to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a new control, namely additive-state-decomposition dynamic inversion stabilized control, that is used to stabilize a class of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems subject to nonparametric time-varying uncertainties with respect to both state and input. By additive state decomposition and a new definition of output, the considered uncertain system is transformed into a minimum-phase uncertainty-free system with relative degree one, in which all uncertainties are lumped into a new disturbance at the output. Subsequently, dynamic inversion control is applied to reject the lumped disturbance. Performance analysis of the resulting closed-loop dynamics shows that the stability can be ensured. Finally, to demonstrate its effectiveness, the proposed control is applied to two existing problems by numerical simulation. Furthermore, in order to show its practicability, the proposed control is also performed on a real quadrotor to stabilize its attitude when its inertia moment matrix is subject to a large uncertainty.

Abstract:In this work, we propose the design and analysis of a novel continuous robust controller for a class of multi--input multi--output (MIMO) nonlinear uncertain systems. The systems under consideration contains unstructured uncertainties in their drift and input matrices. The proposed controller compensates the overall system uncertainties and achieves asymptotic tracking where only the sign of the leading minors of the input gain matrix is assumed to be known. A Lyapunov based argument backed up with an integral inequality is applied to prove stability of the proposed controller and asymptotic convergence of the error signals. Simulation results are presented in order to illustrate the viability of the proposed method.
