Abstract:We show that the higher rank lamplighter groups, or Diestel-Leader groups $\Gamma_d(q)$ for $d \geq 3$, are graph automatic. This introduces a new family of graph automatic groups which are not automatic.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the concept of a Cayley graph automatic group (CGA group or graph automatic group, for short) which generalizes the standard notion of an automatic group. Like the usual automatic groups graph automatic ones enjoy many nice properties: these group are invariant under the change of generators, they are closed under direct and free products, certain types of amalgamated products, and finite extensions. Furthermore, the Word Problem in graph automatic groups is decidable in quadratic time. However, the class of graph automatic groups is much wider then the class of automatic groups. For example, we prove that all finitely generated 2-nilpotent groups and Baumslag-Solitar groups B(1,n) are graph automatic, as well as many other metabelian groups.

Abstract:For any nontrivial abelian group $\mathbb{X}$ we construct a reversible (bireversible in case the order of $\mathbb{X}$ is odd) automaton such that its set of states and alphabet are identified with $\mathbb{X}$, transition and output functions are defined via the left and the right regular actions correspondingly and its group splits into the restricted wreath product $\mathbb{X} \wr \mathbb{Z}$, i.e. is a lamplighter group.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the interplay between aspects of the geometry and algebra of three families of groups of the form B semidirect the integers Z, namely Lamplighter groups, solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups and lattices in SOL. In particular we examine what kind of maps are induced on B by quasi-isometries that coarsely permute cosets of the Z subgroup. By the results of Schwartz(1996) and Taback(2000) in the lattice in SOL and solvable Baumslag-Solitar cases respectively such quasi-isometries induce affine maps of B. We show that this is no longer true in the lamplighter case but the induced maps do share some features with affine maps.

Remarks on discrete subgroups with full limit sets in higher rank Lie groups

Abstract:We show that real semi-simple Lie groups of higher rank contain (infinitely generated) discrete subgroups with full limit sets in the corresponding Furstenberg boundaries. Additionally, we provide criteria under which discrete subgroups of $G = \operatorname{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ must have a full limit set in the Furstenberg boundary of $G$. In the appendix, we show the the existence of Zariski-dense discrete subgroups $\Gamma$ of $\operatorname{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})$, where $n\ge 3$, such that the Jordan projection of some loxodromic element $\gamma \in\Gamma$ lies on the boundary of the limit cone of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:In this paper, we initiate the study of higher rank Baumslag-Solitar semigroups and their related C*-algebras. We focus on two extreme, but interesting, classes - one is related to products of odometers and the other is related to Furstenberg's $\times p,, \times q$ conjecture. For the former class, whose C*-algebras are studied by H. Li and the second author, we here characterize the factoriality of the associated von Neumann algebras and further determine their types; for the latter, we obtain their canonical Cartan subalgebras. In the rank 1 case, we study a more general setting which encompasses (single-vertex) generalized Baumslag-Solitar semigroups. One of our main tools is from self-similar higher rank graphs and their C*-algebras.

Abstract:We study infinite automatic transitive graphs. In particular we investigate automaticity of certain Cayley graphs. We provide examples of infinite automatic transitive graphs that are not Cayley graphs. We prove that Cayley graphs of Baumslag–Solitar groups and the restricted wreath products of automatic transitive graphs with ℤ are automatic.

Abstract:We define a new strict and computable hierarchy for the family of automaton semigroups, which reflects the various asymptotic behaviors of the state-activity growth. This hierarchy extends that given by Sidki for automaton groups, and also gives new insights into the latter. Its exponential part coincides with a notion of entropy for some associated automata. We prove that the Order Problem is decidable when the state-activity is bounded. The Order Problem remains open for the next level of this hierarchy, that is, when the state-activity is linear. Gillibert showed that it is undecidable in the whole family. The former results are implemented and will be available in the GAP package FR developed by the first author.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce halo products as a natural generalisation of wreath products. They also encompass lampshuffler groups $\mathrm{FSym}(H) \rtimes H$ and lampcloner groups $\mathrm{FGL}(H) \rtimes H$, as well as many possible variations based for instance on braid groups, Thompson's groups, mapping class groups, automorphisms of free groups. We build a geometric framework that allows us to study the large-scale geometry of halo groups, providing refined invariants distinguishing various halo groups up to quasi-isometry.

On the Descriptive Complexity of Groups without Abelian Normal Subgroups (Extended Abstract)

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the descriptive complexity theory of finite groups by examining the power of the second Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse bijective pebble game in Hella's (Ann. Pure Appl. Log., 1989) hierarchy. This is a Spoiler-Duplicator game in which Spoiler can place up to two pebbles each round. While it trivially solves graph isomorphism, it may be nontrivial for finite groups, and other ternary relational structures. We first provide a novel generalization of Weisfeiler-Leman (WL) coloring, which we call 2-ary WL. We then show that the 2-ary WL is equivalent to the second Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse bijective pebble game in Hella's hierarchy. Our main result is that, in the pebble game characterization, only O(1) pebbles and O(1) rounds are sufficient to identify all groups without Abelian normal subgroups (a class of groups for which isomorphism testing is known to be in P; Babai, Codenotti, & Qiao, ICALP 2012). In particular, we show that within the first few rounds, Spoiler can force Duplicator to select an isomorphism between two such groups at each subsequent round. By Hella's results (ibid.), this is equivalent to saying that these groups are identified by formulas in first-order logic with generalized 2-ary quantifiers, using only O(1) variables and O(1) quantifier depth.

Quadratic equations in the lamplighter group

Abstract:In this paper we study complexity of solving quadratic equations in the lamplighter group. We give a complete classification of cases (depending on genus and other characteristics of a given equation) when the problem is $\mathbf{NP}$-complete or polynomial-time decidable. We notice that the conjugacy problem can be solved in linear time. Finally, we prove that the problem belongs to the class $\mathbf{XP}$.

Abstract:The existing algorithm to compute and verify the automata associated with an automatic group deals only with the subclass of shortlex automatic groups. This paper describes the extension of the algorithm to deal with automatic groups associated with other word orders (the algorithm has now been implemented ) and reports on the use of the algorithm for specific examples; in particular a very natural automatic (or asynchonously automatic) structure for the Baumslag-Solitar and related classes of groups (closely related to one described for some of those groups by Epstein et al. is found from a wreath product order over shortlex.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group and $\Gamma<G$ be its Zariski dense discrete subgroup. We prove that if $\Gamma\backslash G$ admits any finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure, then $\Gamma$ is virtually a product of higher rank lattices and discrete subgroups of rank one factors of $G$. This may be viewed as a measure-theoretic analogue of classification of convex cocompact actions by Kleiner-Leeb and Quint, which was conjectured by Corlette in 1994. The key ingredients in our proof are the product structure of leafwise measures and the high entropy method of Einsiedler-Katok-Lindenstrauss. In a companion paper jointly with Edwards and Oh, we use this result to show that the bottom of the $L^2$ spectrum has no atom in any infinite volume quotient of a higher rank simple algebraic group.

Abstract:The weak-cop number of a graph, a variation of the cop number, is an invariant suitable for infinite graphs and is a quasi-isometric invariant. While for any $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+\cup\{\infty\}$ there exist locally finite infinite graphs with weak-cop number $m$, it is an open question whether there exists locally finite vertex transitive graphs whose weak-cop number is different than $1$ and $\infty$. We test this question on Cayley graphs of wreath products, these are objects known for their exotic geometries. We prove that Cayley graphs of wreath products of nontrivial groups by infinite groups have infinite weak-cop number. The result is proved by defining a new pursuit and evasion game and proving the existence of strategies for the evader. We also include a short argument that Cayley graphs of Thompson's group $F$ have infinite weak cop number.

Abstract:We consider the two generalizations of lamplighter groups: automata groups generated by Cayley machine and cross-wired lamplighter groups. For a finite step two nilpotent group with central squares, we study its associated Cayley machine and give a presentation of the corresponding automata group. We show the automata group is a cross-wired lamplighter group and does not embed in the wreath product of a finite group with a torsion free group. For a subfamily of such finite step two nilpotent groups, we prove that their associated automata groups are linear.

We investigate their algebraic properties and invariants, count their isomorphism classes, and study their realization as absolute Galois group. At the end, we compute their profinite completion and conclude with some results on profinite completion of absolute Galois groups.

Abstract:The present paper investigates the limit $G$-space $\mathcal{J}_{G}$ generated by the self-similar action of automatic groups on a regular rooted tree. The limit space $\mathcal{J}_{G}$ is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the family of Schreier graphs $\Gamma_{n}$; therefore, $\mathcal{J}_{G}$ can be approximated by Schreier graphs on level $n$-th when $n$ tends to infinity. We propose a computer program whose code is written in Wolfram language computes the adjacency matrix of Schreier graph $\Gamma_{n}$ at each specified level of the regular rooted tree. In this paper, the Schreier graphs corresponding to each automatic group is computed by applying the program to some collection of automata groups, including classic automatic groups.

Abstract:Discrete subgroups of SL(2,R) are well understood, and classified by the geometry of the corresponding hyperbolic surfaces. Discrete subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups, such as SL(n,R) for n>2, remain more mysterious. While lattices in this setting are rigid, there also exist more flexible, "thinner" discrete subgroups, which may have large and interesting deformation spaces, giving rise in particular to so-called higher Teichm\"uller theory. We survey recent progress in constructing and understanding such discrete subgroups from a geometric and dynamical viewpoint.

Abstract:For any finite group $A$ and any finitely generated group $B$, we prove that the corresponding lamplighter group $A\wr B$ admits a standard generating set with unbounded depth, and that if $B$ is abelian then the above is true for every standard generating set. This generalizes the case where $B=\mathbb{Z}$ together with its cyclic generator due to Cleary and Taback. When $B=H*K$ is the free product of two finite groups $H$ and $K$, we characterize which standard generators of the associated lamplighter group have unbounded depth in terms of a geometrical constant related to the Cayley graphs of $H$ and $K$. In particular, we find differences with the one-dimensional case: the lamplighter group over the free product of two sufficiently large finite cyclic groups has uniformly bounded depth with respect to some standard generating set.
